I had a hen that was the lowest and she was picked on trying to eat and roost at night. I checked all the boxes. She had one friend. I had a smaller coop and put her a d her friend in there for a few months. I then would put her in a separated section of the big run. She was then accepted and they were all back together and during the separation she had a friend.

I think sometimes the bully chicken is jealous. When I see them getting upset with my doctoring another hen , I catch up the bully or head hen or rooster and give them a snuggle and check up. At the least they are so freaked out they forget to be mean

I had a hen that had to get up early to eat first and stay out late to eat after others were in bed. I gave her treats in a hiding place for her. We had it all worked out. But, when I introduced 4 new ones in the correct stages, this one became a danger to the new younger ones. I rehomed her to a larger flock that was a fully free range farm. I receive videos where she has friends and is very happy.

My favorite chicken just passed away last night. I was treating them all for coccidiosis when one of our new 1.5 month old chicken got sick and died suddenly. I thought after about a week we were in the clear. When I let them out of the coop today, she was already gone to Chickeaven. She always tried to fly in the food container when I came out to fill it, always greeted me at the door of the coop like a dog when you come home. Man, I'm sad. I miss her.
Your video is a nice distraction. You're just so upbeat and happy in them. I appreciate your channel so much. I told my daughter today "remember what the president of chickenlandia says? Shelbys life was great while she was here and a lot better than if she was raised by a factory. She died but she got a lot of love while she was here."
Thank you for your previous words to help me and my kiddos with loss. ❤️

Then, to twist my arm, most of the chicks were a dollar! And they weren't very old! Well what was a chicken addict to do? I brought home 4 chicks and 4 keets❤.

A couple months ago, i messaged you about my ameraucana baby chicken being bullied or so I thought, I temporarily removed my new hampshire red thinking she was the one because she was the only chicken deemed aggresive of the 5, I have a small hobby flock, well fast forward to today they are doing great and it turns out the Ameraucana is the bully and New Hampsire red is the law enforcer , the ameraucana does not mess with the NHR but she picks on the Silver laced and copper marans which is in my view are at the bottom of the totem pole. I have seen times when the Ameraucana tries to bully the others but the NHR stops her quick. well that is my story love the channel and the teaching.

I think that chicken that you can't identify , Pidge is a blue or lavender orpington. Orpingtons are very gentle and are usually at the bottom of the pecking order despite their large size.

We had one that was a bully when we had to get rid of our rooster. We separated her for a few weeks and slowly reintegrated her. Suddenly a few months later (and once our new boy got to a certain age) she became the one bullied. I hurt my foot and couldn’t be out for two weeks and my hubby didn’t notice she had not come out of the coop.
She was skin and bones. The new guy and flock would not let her out to eat or drink. I ended up separating her again for about a month to help her get better. We tried again and she was back in but eventually they again wouldn’t let her out of the coop. So we fed and watered her in the coop. She was always so excited to see me in the morning because I’d be in the coop with her and she got to the point she would eat out of my hand and letting me pet her. I think she was just lonely. Not a good life for her.
So she has now gone to my neighbor and free ranges and has made new friends. It makes me happy that she’s doing well.
I’ve tried chicken toys and hanging lettuce things etc. mine could care less. They get scratch blocks and get scratch and such.

I had a Silver Laced Wyandotte who was on he bottom of the pecking order. I witnessed the first encounter with two other flock mates. One was in the nest box. Two including her were outside of it trying to get into it. She was chattering in a very loud voice. I did not think much about it but from that day other 4 hens attacked her continuously. I tried separating her for about 2 weeks. That did not work all four attracted her at every turn. There were 3 nest boxes and should have been enough. They did allow her some latitude to free range with my supervision, but every time she tried to go into their run she was attacked by all. I had to build her her own house and run. She seamed happy, but after 10 months I rehouse her to a farm. They were a new farm and there was only one rooster and a hen that looked like her. All were very happy. Living in a subdivision I could not establish a flock for her.

This video helped me to understand my alpha chicken, Thelma (a Sapphire Gem). Rose was the smallest of my 4 Australorp pullets (all the same age). Thelma is still a bully to Rose, but nothing like it used to be. I have 2 prefab TS coops with runs inside a 10x10 dog kennel. (Attached runs now removed) Australorp pullets in 1, Sapphire Gems hens in the other until the pullets were close in size to the hens, about 20 weeks old. I only have the 6 birds. I separated Thelma in 1 coop twice for bullying Rose but it didn't help. I would also use a squirt bottle and squirt Thelma when she would peck Rose for no reason, but it didn't help in the long term when I wasn't there. Thelma would go up and peck Rose in the head when she was sun bathing, or just because Rose walked by (actually Rose would run past Thelma, not walk). I was at a loss. So on a nice day I was working in the yard next to the coop and heard terror in the coop. I went into the coop had my squirt bottle ready. When I caught Thelma peck at Rose simply because Rose walked by I squirted Thelma and for 5 minutes I terrorized Thelma - every time she walked by me or came around a corner I squirted her for no reason. It had 95% worked, I was happy! The pullets have all started to lay this week, Rose being the last, they are 24-25wks, and I'd say niw it's 99% better. Thelma even allowed Rose and Blanch (the 2nd at the bottom of the pecking order) sleep in the popular girls coop with her and the others last night (Rose & Blanch had slept by themselves in the other coop by themselves. Maybe when you lay an egg you are finally cool enough to sleep with the popular girls. I also wonder if Thelma sensed this windstorm and wanted everyone together to protect her flock (?). Now, everyone is together. Funny story, my largest Australorp pullet, Dorothy,😢 stood up to Thelma a couple days after I integrated them. So glad I got to witness it. Dorothy was my largest pullet yet was at the bottom of the pecking order. Thelma (Sapphire Gem hen) would force the 4 Australorp pullets to stay on a perch, she terrorized them. One day Dorothy had enough, she jumped down off the perch in front of Thelma, all puffed up and standing tall appearing as large or larger than Thelma. Then Dorothy jumped up and pointed her claws at Thelma. Thelma jumped up pointing her claws at Dorothy - this banter continued 3 times, a brief tussle broke out and that was it. Dorothy went from the bottom of the pecking order to #2. It was pretty cool to witness.

Being new to chicken psychology- I guess you can call it that.... I did feel some type of way by the pecking order. Us humans (for the most) do think we should all have the same resources, but that isn't the case in chickendom. To them this is about survival of the species.

I got a new hen who spent all day every day chasing my other three timid hens, I tried the quarantine trick twice but it didnt work and my hens were getting so stressed. I ended up taking her back to the breeder and getting a different hen, and now i have a harmonious happy relaxed group of hens. I feel a bit sad about the one hen not working out, but like you say, she was better off in a different flock.

Hi Dalia. I used to be a bit smug about my girls, thinking they had the perfect life with lots of enrichment. Other than the usual pecking order issues they lived in harmony. Well that has now changed. I got three new girls last Autumn. They integrated into the flock well but gradually I noticed feathers missing from the necks of the two other newbies. It got so bad that they looked like naked necks. Most of the feather pecking took place overnight in the coop. The culprit - Hattie is eating the feathers. During the day she would wander around plucking feathers from pretty much all the girls and eating them right up. Their run is bigger than it has ever been and full of enrichment. They get high end feed and healthy treats like cabbage, meal worms and broccoli. She would be out free ranging and come into the run to grab a tasty feather from one of the others as they dust bathed or whatever. I’m at a loss. I have tried putting a bump a bit on her for 6 weeks. I think I was more traumatised doing this then she was but when it came off she still has the habit albeit reduced. At the moment I am putting her and a much more dominant girl in a different coop at night so the other two can regrow their feathers. I think it is going to be a management thing rather than a resolution thing for a while. Maybe she will mature out of it, I don’t know. What a nightmare 🥴

My cat likes my chickens and comes with me in the morning to let them out and will often hang out with them while they free range. She is an Honorary Flock Member to the point where even my rooster pays her no mind when she's in the middle of his ladies. But I have one mid-level hen, a petite ISA Brown named Minnie, who will make a bee line for the cat and peck/bully her whenever she feels like it. It's to the point my cat reconizes her and will proactively move away before she's noticed. It's bizarre and also a bit comical. Minnie bullies the cat for sure!

Awe, my late cat Jess who passed away a couple of summer's ago at age of 16 used to protect all our pets over year's, first it was the bunny's n guinea pigs, then our little budgie who they both had a special bond together and every time I left any of them outside in summer warm weather (either in a run or cage/budgie) she would protect them from any other cats, then when we moved house and got chickens and ducks she would do same thing protect them from other cats, sounds like your cat has a special place in your flock ♥️😊

Dogs are kinda like chickens. I fostered dogs and when i got a new foster, i would take my pacck on a pack walk. We would walk in a place that was neutral so there is no territory and we walks as a group. In a dog pack the dogs have an order in the pack. The leaders are in the front, neutral dogs in the middle and fearful in the back. Being fearful they let the rest of the pack know danger is coming from behind.

This is very helpful. I only have 5 chickens. Two of them are turkens and usually super lovable at least to me. But over time one turken was picking on the other a lot and even chased her away from the food. I've separated them out and the one picked on does have a friend she could hang out with. It's now got better but I still put the one turken with her friend in a separate place for awhile in the early evening so I make sure she gets her share of the food. I do it more often if seems like she isn't getting her share of food. She's gotten better about getting in there and getting her food and gets chased away less. I'm going to keep in mind some of what you've shared if need to use it. Thank you!

We just lost our sweet Juliet (black bearded USA bantam Silkie hen ) we've had her since she was a few days old along with her sisters and around 21 weeks (after a long winter inside our house 😊)we introduced them to our polish and gold top bantam hens (7 weeks older but they were transitioned outside in time before winter) they didn't fight as such and soon established a pecking order where our little Juliet was always at the bottom (they were all sweet to her as if they knew she was kinda special) she was often on her own staring into space bless, chickens are truly special little souls ❤RIP 💔 Juliet she was 2 1/2 years old my 16 yr old son was heartbroken we can't be certain but I think she was born with some sort of deficiency and possibly going blind as she always acted a little odd compared to her sisters, when she came into lay around 21 wks just before we introduced them to the other chickens she used to cry for me to bring her back into house so she could lay her egg in house bless, I don't regret getting them at beginning of winter as it was a lovely experience like having 5 little Fluffy (silkies)dogs running around ❤ 🐓

Thank you for your entertaining and educational videos.
This of all your videos I have questions on specially after you said it could be me that's the problem. So here goes. My routine has been getting their food to them by 7:30-8am. I would throw raw feed before learning about fermenting it first. I would try to spread it around and whenever the smaller chickens came near it the bigger ones would chase them off. I am just throwing the feed on the ground avoiding the grass as much as possible to allow them to get it. I have big brown chickens, smaller white ones and then pigeon size smallest birds that were born into the flock. They all were kind of born into the flock. The brown ones take over, then the white ones and the smallest I sometimes have to grab up and feed them aside from the rest just to give them a chance to eat. I feed them more than once a day to allow the ones laying to come out and feed. I can't baby sit 24/7. I have tried to keep an I on who is the meanest but it's all the brown ones that won't let the little guys eat. I now feed them fermented grains and pellets. I have been trying to feed them all are scraps and eggs, but they seem to be picky. They are free range and only go into the barn to roost and they lay in other places besides their boxes. Some chickens have moved into the boxes and don't share. But I find eggs in my front yard as well as the pastures.
Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to read this.
I will keep watching all your vids and have subscribed.
Oh! Sorry to get needy for your knowledge but I have more... Just a bit. I keep the new babies inside a cage or trough indoors until they are about 5 weeks old. Then I feed them first before I let them outside. They let me know when it's time to come in. They have tried to feed with the big girls but just end up staying close together away from the rest of the flock. I will do this until they make their way into the flock and barn on their own.
Can you help me evaluate what I could be doing to encourage the bullying?

Love your channel. I have probably missed your video on your fence height. Your fence looks to be about 6 feet. Will that deter them from flying out of the run? My fence is 4 feet and I cannot keep them in. My biggest predator is dogs during the day. So my birds are stressed out because they cannot free-range long enough.

@@RobertaHoyle yes, they lay brown. I believe the mix includes a barred rock which to me, besides the color, is another thing that makes them great. Barred rocks are one of my fave breeds. All that I have had over the years have all been friendly and docile, good layers. I really want a Sapphire Splash but there are none around here. =-( I saw some at a hatchery online but one unlike MyPetChicken where you can order a total of 3..they have limits and you have to get like a minimum 10 of each breed....

I have one hen (a Wyandotte) suddenly pecking the tail end of three other hens but not two.
She goes after one hen especially who used to be the (gentle) leader until her back end is bare!
I’m going to try separating her but because it’s winter, I have to put her back in the hen house at night or move her inside the shop.
I know they’re all getting enough food, protein, supplements, treats and enrichment. But, the bully won’t let the one hen near anything!
I’m so angry with her! I’ve tried spraying the other hens’ hind ends with tea tree spray but she doesn’t care.

I have 5 chickens, I got three more from my dad. Didn’t know much but we just throw them in with the flock. The youngest one is being bullied by my chickens.
I have separated my bully chicken for four days. Returned her and both of them continue to bully the young one. Do I separate both my bully chickens from the flock or do I separate the bully one by herself?
My last resort is to give my dad back the one that is being bullied.

My rooster is horrible to one of my hens. Keeps her from exciting the coop and chases her down and pecks her hard.
I put her in with my 10 week old chicks to give her a break.
He attacks me, too. The only thing keeping my buff Orpington rooster from the stew pot is the fact that he is an excellent lookout…

I have five hens and they've had some issues here and there with being not so nice to one another. My vet suggested that having an even number of hens is better for overall flock harmony. I think because then everyone has a buddy that they hang out with. Has it been your experience that this matters? Or any other thoughts on it?
It does seem like my girls don't have the most stable pecking order and there will be times that their places in it shift considerably. Not sure if that's normal or if that is a sign of some kind of imbalance. Or just that chicken social structure is more nuanced than I realize.
Do you have any advice for integrating chickens who have drastically different feathering from the flock (i.e. feathered feet, faces, heads, etc.)? I know that those can inspire bullying sometimes.

I hatch about a hundred chicks every year and keep them for meat for about eight months before they are culled at the end of autumn (I don't keep through winter and eggs are not a priority on my list, as I do not have appropriate conditions to take them through the cold. They're not next to me and water freezes and I cannot take care of them more than three-four times a week for a few hours). Moreover, they are kept in a confined space in a basement under artificial LED and UVB lighting, in a space a bit better than chicken farms provide but certainly not the optimal, not free roaming... The reason for this is not fear of predators but neighbours, if you get what I mean...😉 Understandably, since I keep every chick I hatch, a lot of them are roosters, and keeping such a mix in a crowded space, one would expect a lot of pecking and fights... But apart from some subtle pecking I have never observed severe bullying or harming each other... Is it because they are young and never reach even 9-10 months of age? Or is it because they get food as much as they want and really there's no competition in that respect? Besides cereals in various types and shapes they get a lot of vegetables and fruits (I mean a lot, I've got a large supply of waste from a grocer and most of it goes into a compost, simply too much to feed it all to the chicken). I vaccinate them all for Newcastle, Gumboro and bronchitis, they get Coccidiosis prevention from time to time and no antibiotics without a serious reason... The coops are always clean with plenty of sawdust (which later goes to the compost) and sand for them to peck and take baths (their beloved pastime especially when freshly changed).

My 3 older hens are divas and are ssuch bullies to my newest 5. One of my newest was going in the coop to lay and my older hen ran throught the run, up to the coop and chased her out. I then saw 2 of my older ones peck at her and had her on the ground.
Do i need to seperate the 3 from the rest and separate the 3 older from each other?

Im watching because I have a young flock of 4 only, 1 is possibly a rooster but the breed is bantam and her his comb is larger, but what I think is the top hen and the suspect roo, since I put up the new enclosure and coop they have been running up to each other and jumping, no kicking - no real fights just like bluff runs.

Unrelated to this video, but I have started fermenting a homemade feed recipe so I can get organic ingredients and mix myself. When I ferment this I get a white slightly fuzzy film on the top. I threw out the first batch thinking it was mold but now I am reading that it is a normal yeast and part of fermenting. I have been only fermenting for 24 hour to avoid this happening versus the 2 to 3 days I have done in the past. Is it normal and how can I tell the difference between safe fuzzies and moldy fuzzies.
