It’s always better if you have local friends to bring you around small cities/ towns in Malaysia
Kuantan is famous for its salted fish and dried fish product, such as anchovies- which some are used for nasi lemak, some are used for stir fried dish and some are used for making soup broth. The shop owner can tell you what items to buy for what style of cooking…
Kuantan is basically a sleepy city, whereby you can stay and explore other places within 1-2 hrs drive. Do try nasi dagang and sata ikan

I went to high school here from 1979-1984 (Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Hj Ahmad Shah) which is 8 mile away from Kuantan toward the west. Near the airport.
Back then, there was a boat jetty near the foodcourt (closed for renovation) near the Kuantan 188 tower to ferry people across the river before the Tanjung Lumpur bridge was built in 1994.
Please try to look for restaurant serving patin fish (silver catfish) cooked in tempoyak (fermented durian) broth. Pahang is well known for this dish especially in Temerloh town which is 129km away towards the west.

Even " no spicy" can be a bit spicy. Spiciness is such a subjective taste to locals. In general most Malaysians favor some level of spiciness and many prefer extreme spiciness. Have fun exploring 👍😅
