Great review of the metallic product line. Lots of talk about the glossiness. If you want gloss over a matte, just shoot clear over it. if I have a choice in matte or gloss for a certain color (Krylon) I always pick the matte version and will spray gloss over it if needed. Couple of other notes: 1. It appears you need to shake the cans more, several times you barely shook the can and then talk about coverage! Maybe coverage would be better if the paint was mixed better? 2. Warm up the can before spraying by soaking them in a small bucket of warm water for 10-15 minutes before spraying (be sure to use a towel off the can before spraying to avoid water dripping). This works especially well for the gloss colors, they will lay out much flatter (glossier).
In response to your comment about how he barely shook the can prior to demonstration, I guess you missed it at the beginning when he mentioned how he did in fact give each can a good shake prior to filming the demonstration followed by how that actually was a pain however it's necessary. The small shake before each demo was him simply giving each can a quick shake beforehand.
Very nice, real-world comparison. Thank you for taking the time to do this and share it. Those are some great colors to consider when I refurb my next Baldor. My take is if you’re going to take the time to strip and repaint something, you might as well make it interesting to look at. I will be choosing one of the nice colors you’ve demo’d here.
Key point; there is a reason model paint comes in smaller cans. I can’t imagine trying to paint models with huge cans like that, but I did repaint the hand rail on my stairway with their hammered metal finish (pewter) and it came out pretty nice. I had to leave it outside for 2 days to out-gas though.
Really enjoyed your video. Your description of all the colors was great and exact. Thank you for doing this . getting to diy some things around my home so this was very helpful.
As someone who just bought all the lights for my new house build I can tell you every “antique brass” is a different shade. Every “oil rubbed bronze” is a different shade. I think I may do a project… I could create the antique brass effect by spraying on gold first, then spray on the aged brass on top. Then use a paint thinner to removed most of the aged brass but leave it in the crevasses. Might be really cool! But need a piece of crap to test that on! I saw a guy online do that trick for oil rubbed bronze with copper layer first, then the black on top. Used paint thinner to remove just a hint of black to show the copper underneath
If you let the cans sit and settle a couple of days you can poke a hole in the top of the cans and let out the pressure. cut the top off and pour the paint into a jar for airbrush use. Good for any spray can!
You could also dispense with the cutting the top off and just put a hole near the bottom edge and it will pour out nicely just make sure you have a big enough bottle to hold it all.
I bought the rose and another color, can't remember which one and also got some clear coat as well from Walmart for the same price. Tyvm for sharing the info with us.
Came here for aged copper, saw on amazon and they are quite different from the picture they have on amazon, they are more dark bronze but in this video they more like what it says, aged copper thanks for the video!
Brilliant! Thank you for taking the time to do this and share. I bought an expensive mirror from West Elm but unfortunately the frame color looked so cheap in real life and I'm trying to find that saturated antique brass spray color. I was quite disappointed given that they call their mirror "Antique Brass". This was not antique and far from brass. Just a cheap metal frame that was sprayed in China and selling for $499 plus tax. What is happening to the world?
Krylon chrome... I love it.. bought it from hobby lobby. Goes on so smooth, quick, great coverage and dries super quick. I used rustoleum sprays to paint my daughters vanity. It was OK. Not as great of a coverage but it was fast and it'll do. I ended up painting the other dresser the regular way.
Awesome video comparative review of these Rust-Oleum metallic spray paints! I bought 4 cans of the satin black color of this brand. I plan to use it to extra anti-rust and color paint a DIY galvanized iron steel clothing rack that I want to build. But until I found your review, no other YT videos do such an indepth and superb comparative color review of Rust-Oleum metalic spray paints. Bravo sir! Thank you so much for making this review.
Six years ago (funny that I just seen my FB memory now,I painted my cabinets 6 years exactly today 😆) I painted some kitchen cabinet doors with their silver hammered finish. They still look the same as they did from day one. Slab and frame doors particle board doors from the 80's,just cleaned them and some light sanding and two coats of paint. Their stuff is great for almost anything. Even did some doors with the roll on chalkboard paint. People used to ask me who did it, I'm like sprayed them outside and let them dry in my garage for a few days. Personally like the hammered metal finish they have, cause it can minor defects.
I like that you compare them to the Tamiya paint because most of us are here because we're painting models or cars and we all know the price of paint in China but in our case Japan lol
Thanks for another great video........A couple of things. I've used this before and it's pretty good but, if painting small stuff like a spoon or small Bandai, Gumpla, or other small stuff there is a lot of over spray probably over 50%. So it's like wasting half. Second, I also airbrush canned Rust-Oleum enamel thinned with acetone. it works great....................................
I used the Satin Nickel for some plastic parts in our old car. The interior was originally 100% black but adding painted accents made it look a lot better. I used a matte UV clear coat over top to help prevent scratches. I do think this is a great paint line but have seen many people complain of nozzle drips which I've encountered too, so if possible you need to keep whatever you're painting vertical or angled enough to not allow the can over the surface or you might drip paint on it. Lastly, I've always thought Rustoleum makes great "general purpose" paints. I want to try their newer automotive enamel too.
Thank you for producing this comparison video. This is my favorite line of name brand spray paints. I have been using them for 10+ years. Carbon Mist is my favorite but they are all superb. I have been having a difficult time finding any recently at my local stores.
I know this video is 3 yrs old, but right now I’m my local DIY store in Ireland, these 400ml can of spray paint cost €26.99! That’s 27 US dollars. 🤪 compared to $7! that’s just crazy! Cans of spray paint have always had a high price point here in rip off Ireland. 🙄
Thanks. I am looking for a good spray paint to refinish a lamp. I looked on line and saw these available at Lowes and I read the reviews after watching your video I.m defiantly going to buy this paint.
I use these and have few months now and you should try the hammered grey and all colors are beautiful the pearlescent White is stunning they're beautiful colors I use them on a lot of metal that are covered in a ugly Chrome serving trays and they turn out beautifully with all these colors.
Thank you for this video.. I was searching for a metallic paint for a 3d printed plastic to match brushed nickel Faucet. The satin nickel or dull steel looks close.
That carbon mist is beautiful. I have a skull (a Halloween prop) that I bought to use as a headphone stand and have been looking for a paint I could use to make it look like a black sparkle chrome look and I think this carbon mist is the one. I should probably sand the crap out of it first and do 2 coats? I want it to look like that spoon :)
Now you should be able to rip off the caps (there on there good!) & drill out a rusto spray cap slightly (forgot the bit size) so you can spray it heavier, or a use a cap adapter setup. Because you can. You missed or failed to find rusto pearl.
Love the video! I think there may be one that is not included in this video tho! Maybe it came out after. It’s The pearl mist! It’s metallic white. It’s beautiful! I used it on these foam flowers and it made them so glossy , they almost looked like plastic or something. It’s not really shimmery or sparkly, just really shiny and glossy. Just in case you are in the market for something like that!

And I asked that about the gold my friend because the color pixels on cell phones don't really show if the goals have more yellow or not they all look the same but since you are there you can tell between the gold spray-paint if one has more yellow in it or if one looks more brass..
Carbon is the winner here, but i've been in a never ending search of a perfect carburetor color and champagne mist looks ok-ish, from the video but i would have to spray it to see it up close- great testing tho, keep'em coming.

These cans are primarily made for painting metal. When I tested them on straight plastic with no primer it looked awful and started to eat into the plastic. The primer helped big time with that
