- Just a friendly reminder that even with 4x4 you will loose traction easily going downhill on icy roads. The car is superconfident on winter roads and it is easy to forget and adjust speed to the conditions.

Not an EV problem, its an ALL vehicle problem. Unless you put on studded tires, your sliding down that hill every single time.
My intention posting this was not to say that this is an EV problem. More a friendly reminder that even with 4x4 you will loose traction easily going downhill on icy roads. The car is superconfident on winter roads and it is easy to forget and adjust speed to the conditions.
did you have winter tyres? it doesn’t look like
Using studless winter tires, nordic edition. Works fine 99% of the time, but in wet ice conditions like in the video it is definitely wiser to park the car 👍
@@Vegard-Driving-Somewhere ah ok yes indeed on thick ice only chains, tyre socks or studded tires really work indeed.
Is not a big problem with subaru
That was actuallly good performance
It’s climbed up and could break when going backwards
Most cars would slide right back down
That’s a beast of a vehicle
a right point - no 4x4 is safe per se in winter :) for ice, use studded tires .. for snow, just avoid too much (I once landed my 4x4 on a pile of snow because I thought naively it could do anything magically) ..
wow it cooped pretty well! I'm impressed
My grandma has one it’s so cool I love it
That thing is so better looking than the teslas.
"it's 4 wheel drive, not 4 wheel brake"
It's a car that is great going on winter roads on flat and great going uphill, but as any other car going downhill you need to take care 👍just a friendly reminder 😊
It is 4 wheel brake. What modern vehicles aren’t?
@@JasonEisenberg81 yeah i know that i was just ironic.
Should come standard with "4 wheel reverse" 😂😂
It’s AWD not 4 wheel drive
EV's make the best winter cars. The infinitesimal control over the power makes for great traction and control.
Couldn't agree more!
@@Vegard-Driving-Somewhere it was revelation driving my first EV in the first snowfall of the year! Would love a four wheel drive EV though 😁
Unless it’s dead in the cold. 🥶🥶🥶🥶
Well, they are heavy as hell and have more instant torque so no, not exactly.
Tesla's crappy truck proves you completely wrong.
Its so much fun to watch 😅😂
Mainly the weight of EV is the problem harder to slow down or to track up vs a normal car but it can also be the case for other cars too. Heavier the more the struggle
Fantastisk vinterbil denne Polarstjerna vår. Den kommer virkelig frem. Digger den.
Ja den kommer seg frem! Skikkelig gøy på utfordrende vinterføre 👍
On thick ice you need studded tires!
Impressive 👏🏼
All the tech wouldn’t matter with bad tires lol
I can't believe that anyone living in an area with such weather would chose to not use studded tires, if allowed by law of course.
99% of the grip comes from the tires. Doesn't matter what car or powertrain the car uses.
The reason I got studless winter tires is because they are less noisy, they provides equal or better grip on snow covered roads, they have shorter breaking distance on dry/wet roads and I would not be surprised if consumption is lower too.
Studs are better when there is wet ice, but 98% of the winter we do not have those conditions.
Studless are also better for the environment and in the big cities here in Norway drivers with studs have to pay a fee to drive into cities like Oslo.
Depending on the drivers experience level, studs would probably feel like the safer choice for some, but it's not obviously the better choice.
@@Vegard-Driving-Somewhere Nope, studded tires are better in every winter condition. Period.
Their only downsides are that they are a bit noisy and expensive.
As I wrote earlier, the tires do 99% of the work. Your experience will not do shit when you panic in a crazy situation where you need to stop quickly to avoid hitting a car/object in front of you.
The environment excuse is not valid when the alternative is that you risk injury to yourself and your passengers, sometimes even death.
Lets not forget that in an accident, that could have been avoided with a studded tires, you risk damaging your car beyond repair, which is an even worse crime against the environment.
The real reasons why people don't buy studded tires are because they (the people) are cheap and/or lack knowledge of how vital studded tires are in winter conditions. They feel that they'd rather risk their lives, and the lives of their passengers, just so they can "spare" themselves of a slightly more noisy cabin...
And after the accident has arrived, they all regret not buying studded tires.
I`m not sure where in the world you are located, but here in Norway we use non-studded winter tires with nordic compound which is different from non-studded winter tires with european compound or american/european all weather/season tires. In Oslo (the biggest city in Norway) in 2022 91% of all car owners used non-studded winter tires. Yes, studded tires are better on wet ice and spots where snow is packed (typically in crossroads where cars often stop and start), but the difference is not that big and it is definitely safe to drive with nordic compound non studded winter tires in most winter conditions.
@@Vegard-Driving-SomewhereI live in Sweden so I'm familiar with the climate.
Nordic winter tires are just as useless in snowy/icy conditions.
The only time it makes sense to use Nordic winter tires is if you only drive in the city and it is fairly flat.
Even the best Nordic winter tires will be outperformed by a low quality studded tire. It is basic physics.
@@tricky86 Lets agree to disagree then ;) I`m happy we both can choose tires that we feel safe driving.
I drive both in the city and to the cabin in the mountains regularly and have no issues with the non-studded tires except from the rare occasions when its freezing rain or wet ice, in which you just have to wait until the road service has saltet or put sand on the road. This happens maybe once or twice every winter.. We have a steep hill to where we live and to the cabin, never had any issues. We even have non-studded tires on our 2018 Nissan Leaf.
On pure ice that’s actually not too bad.
Good job! Does the Polestar have a 'creep forwards' function that could help avoid wheelspin going forwards?
It does have a "creep mode". I haven't tested it much, but prefer driving with it off. The car does have a very good ESC and together with AWD does wonders for traction in difficult winter conditions.
Why do people continue trying to drive on ice? This is not specific to an EV or Polestar. They actually should handle better than a typical vehicle in winter conditions, but stay off the ice regardless.
This is how most of us in Norway have to get home. Winter is always like this when it rains. Can't abstain from work or life in situations like these.
Separated technology can enable the rear engine alone to decrease energy assume even though it is the AWD model. Perhaps the AWD is not enabled.
Its chains time man. No 4 X4 Full Gas Non AWD or AWD can just roll down they slide down buddy!!
It’s still doing better than even some trucks
Actually trucks have more problems than cars do when not loaded! At least tractor+semi-trailer vehicles do.
This is why you get studded tires. I am in Sweden and I always get studded tires on my daily cars. Always. All seasons are horrible, absolute trash. What are you using in this video?
Using studless winter tires in this video. I've been using studless for the last 10 years. Works great 99% of the time for my use. doesn't work great on wet ice though..
❤❤Thats why ppl invented chains on wheels❤❤
Use opposite gears for up down
"Your mother eats kitty litter" should have saved some.
I don't think people are getting the idea of the video. Haha
I think it did great on pure ice lol
this car was slipping like wet ice 😅
Land Rover Discovery with terrain control. 😅 Cheers 🍻 🇬🇧
🍻
4x4's and SUV's were invented for a reason, you know. At least you should, if you live in a snowy area.
So what is better, AWD or 4x4? (The car in the video is AWD and works great in snowy area 👍)
For me downhill does not look scary it look cool and 10/10. You should just park up quick and instead of hit the brake let it roll and turn quickly
PARK AT THE TOP OF THE HILL.
Kids‼️
2183 kg of car + instant torque = bar of soap
better with studded winter tires in this weather condition
dude ur driving on straight up ice what did you expect. get winter tires
Expected it to be slippery 😅 the car was fitted with winter tires. Video was just meant as a friendly reminder that even though these new cars are awesome on winter roads, taking care especially going downhill is smart 👍
You’ve put the wrong gear in. The car is on reverse 😂
It’s literally digging
Can we still improve on traction control and abs? Zero wheel spin?
A sensor could monitor the ground how slippery and calculate max power before slip.
If the ground is THAT slippery, any power would be too much power
In any car you'll have this problem
Laughs in studded tires on my Civic as I fly around you.
😅
Studded tires are for pussies
You were going ok why stop??
It annoys me as it feels like the government hasnt «salta og strødd» as much as they should this year, for the matter any of the last few years.
Yeah, but also weather has been all over so probably not easy task for them. When they salt and the salt is washed away by rain in the next hour before it then starts to snow again 😅
Wow! Scary. Winter tyres?
Yes, using studless winter tires. Was very scary. At one point I actually lost complete control going down a hill, but was lucky enough to escape without damage 👍
Im getting studies tires for my Polestar 2
Studded *
Summer tyres?😅
Nope, Nordic studless winter tyres. Very slippery wet ice.
IONIQ 5 has a snow mode, "ICE mode" Never for an EV.
AWD is different to 4x4.
På med dubbdäck så gåre
Same config but with Hakkapelita 10, problem solve...
Those tires are unidirectional. If the car was facing downhill the braking would likely be better.
Nope, at least not in this case. Traction was equally bad in both directions.(I tried)
I probably use a tractor if I live in that house.
This just show how out of touch some rich folks are
The Performance P2 variant is also on SUMMER tires from the factory so not a safe move here
The P2 in the video is on studless winter tires made for the Nordic countries.
Why does he stop when he begins to make progress up the hill. You need a running start. If all else fails, get a tire sock. They work on snow or ice. fact.
My intention posting this was just as a friendly reminder that even with 4x4 you will loose traction easily going downhill on icy roads. The car is superconfident on winter roads and it is easy to forget and adjust speed to the conditions.
I've driven on these Norwegian winter roads for the last 26 years, so I got some experience getting around relatively safely 😅
Snow tires or no?
Car was fitted with studless winter tires. Nothing new that cars slide downhill on wet ice, but these new cars are so good going uphill even on wet ice it is sometimes easy to forget it is not the same case going downhill 😅
Bro your literally in reverse 😂
Thought it was only me that saw that 😂
It was doing great until you put it in reverse.
Get better tires. And no one is stupid enough to drive on that road like that
Tesla would have been on top already 😆
Ignorant drivers looking for lame blames...
My intention for posting this was just a friendly reminder that even though the car gives you super confidence on winter roads due to its great 4x4, it is easy to forget that it does not help much with great 4x4 when going downhill on very slippery roads. Goes for any car, and I saw loads of them in the ditches on the steep road from our cabin last winter.
#ev #lesson #slow #failure
😅 what do you mean is failure in the video? The car is amazing on ice. Evs like this one are brilliant in though winter conditions. My point with the video was just to show that you need to take extra care going downhill.. I posted it because every winter I see quite a few cars in the ditch, both evs and fossil and very often heavy AWDs, so it seems people tend to forget to take care going downhill. maybe because the car is so great going up ?
Do we really need a video showing a vehicle struggling on ice? Its ice.
Every winter we see a lot more cars going off the road by accident, so I guess yes 🤷♂️
Tyres too wide, too low profile , no good for snow / ice
Your experience is very different from mine. I find them pretty good for most snow/ice conditions I've met here in Norway. Driving to the cabin in the mountains regularly, so I get to experience pretty much all kinds of winter conditions.
Wet ice like in the video, is really challenging for any tire, even studded ones. With conditions like in the video I rather park the car and stay at home 👍😅
La den trille på reversen og ikke brems, bror. Newb.
You have wrong tires dude
Yes studded winter tires would have been better on wet ice like that, but I use studless winter tires as most of the time the roads we drive on doesn't have wet ice.
Vegard driving nowhere 👻 gjør som meg med Ford rangeren og henger, full pupp 😂#joke
😅
Scary is the stupidness of driver. 🤦🏻♂️
Is that a Ford Taurus? FEVs and FJB. 🥶🔥🖕🇨🇳
Learn to drive in the snow and ice. Jeez
😂
this video implies that you can drive on ice with standard tires - that’s not the case - what a bad video
The car is fitted with Michelin x-ice Snow. Video was just meant as a friendly reminder that even though these new cars are awesome on winter roads, taking care especially going downhill is smart, shown on wet ice which is probably the worst case scenario 👍
工業垃圾😂
I'd rather watch paint dry This is very boring
Yea literally any vehicle would do the same thing in these conditions. Terrible video
Yep, you are totally right any vehicle would do the same. I just made this video as a friendly reminder that everyone should take care and remember that any vehicle would slide when going downhill on icy roads, even 4*4`s. Last winter I saw a lot of cars going off the road, most likely due to drivers not adapting the speed to the conditions.
On the road to hour cabin there is a 10 km stretch of steep roads, and I saw Porsche`s, Tesla`s, Mercedes`s and even a big cement truck in the ditch. The Polestar 2 is so good on winter roads and it is easy to get too confident and forget to take it slow going downhill, the same is probably true to a lot of other cars.
Lower the tire pressure
You’d be screwed in any car
Hopefully not while driving!!!
