Honestly, she still isn't too different from the OVA version, as far as her personality goes. In the OVA, she and her sisters created the universe multiple times.

And also Kiyone is a foil for Mihoshi in Universe, where in the OVA, Mihoshi doesn't really have a foil until much later. And that's only what I remember. There is likely way more than that. Oh yeah, also Sasami goes to a universe where she's a Magical Girl for a backdoor pilot.

To be Fair washu the scientist is so brilliant she was banished to another dimension and lives in another dimension she constructed. Esentially she is a damn timelord.
Can we all take a moment to appreciate the genuinely incredible animation in this movie? That scene where Kain explodes into a supernova simply by screaming is downright fucking chilling.
Just gonna put it out there that one of the reasons I enjoy Tenchi as a harem anime is because the leading ladies aren't causing bodily harm to our leading male should he happen to see them in a state of undress or complete nakkie, unlike so many nowadays that need it for a joke or the main vein of the anime in question.

I actually like it as a Harem, mainly because the female characters act like actual human beings, and not just sentient fuck-dolls. 9/10 harem animes female characters arent individual beings, they usually have zero personality or at best one personality trait, and peoples favorite character boils down to either your ideal cup size or favorite hair color. get a box of wigs and a box of push up bras and you'd never be able to tell them apart. With Tenchi though the characters each have their own motivation and their own personalities.
To summarize the harem genre; woe es me! I’m a teenager surrounded by drop dead gorgeous women with super powers who want nothing more than to get in my pants-but I can’t do anything about it because I’m a shy geek who gets nosebleeds all the time. And I’ll also end up marrying the one who physically and emotionally abuses me the most.
She's 20 000 years old. She probably worked with Time Paradoxes before once or twice so that warranted creation of a shield. Not to mention that she is also a literall goddess-creator of the universe, even if that's from the subsequent OVAs.
Except for Sol, who is one of the most metal characters in creation, who straight up murders his past self and says fuck you to reality by pretty much stating he gives no fucks about the rules of space and time before stomping the bitch that brought him to the past to begin with.
Some physics theories state that time and space are the same dimension, so if Kain could screw around with a prison that is in subspace then he could also screw around with time as well. A little bit of science they could have dropped into this 90 minute episode but chose to skip.
I'm a big Tenchi fan I like all the various universes and spinoffs to one degree or another and this is my favorite of the movies. That said, it's certainly not perfect and this was a very entertaining review as is your review of Daughter of Darkness. I do have an explanation for one of the plot holes you mentioned... Washu's lab and the time machine in it exist in a pocket dimension so it seem's feasible that it would have been isolated form changes to the time line in what is effectively a whole other universe.
Come to think of it, Pirates of the Caribbean's alternate title would be Jack Sparrow Muyo, 'cause when you get right down to it, Jack is unimportant. I'm not harping on him, I'm just making mention that while he's fun and popular, he's not the driving force of the stories; the other characters are. He's just along for the ride like Tenchi. Unlike Tenchi, however, Jack has a personality.
If it wasn't for jack's constant scheming there wouldn't have been a plot. So I'd have to disagree. the first movie Will and Elizabeth probably would have just been killed if jack hadn't been trying so hard to kill barbosa and get the pearl. In the first movie the focus is still kinda spread out however, so I'll agree to disagree with you . The second movie was all about him running from the kraken and using whatever he could to do so. The third movie is even more jack focused. He plans his own escape from death and then the defeat of the soldiers. So honestly I'd say Jack had alot more purpose than tenchi, who typically is reactive not proactive.
Why does Washu have a galaxy destroying cannon just lying around? Because she's a mad scientist. It's in her job description. When she gets bored, she builds doomsday devices. She probably has a cross dimensional competition going with Professor Farnsworth. Who can design the most over the top doomsday devices? And with the Dimensional Cannon, Washu is way ahead.
The moment Tenchi begins to disappear, but wills himself into existence, reminds me of a similar instance in the Negima manga where a character named Jack Rakan was erased from existence by some kinda ultimate magic and willed himself back into existence to beat some sense into Negi who was mourning the loss of one of his teachers.
I hate the trope of overcoming impossibility with willpower but in this case it actually makes sense. The thing that makes Tenchi relevant is that he is a human who can alter and transcend reality. The power the three ultimate goddesses wanted to create so they could better understand their own origins. So yeah, Tenchi willing himself into continued existence actually makes sense in the context of the show.
Washu is my favorite character too and if you don't want to think too hard on how she knew to prepare all this, just chalk it up to her being a goddess. Okay seriously, it kinda sorta explains how she knew, but her timing is so conveluted. Still, it's Washu so I'll allow it!
Washu isn't a goddess here, that's only on the original OVA series. But this version isn't too far off, as she is smart enough to make all-types of reality bending devices and doomsday machines for fun.
As someone who never watched any of these shows with any regularity, it's fun to watch you tear into them Sage! I'm always surprised, enlightened and entertained- rock on sir!
I loved this movie when I first saw it and have a soft spot for it now. I saw it when SciFi used to air anime movies on Saturday mornings and it was one of my first anime that wasn't Sailor Moon or DBZ. It was nicely animated, the soundtrack was interesting, and even though the story was meandering, it held my attention.

I remember watching both the dubbed and subbed versions of Tenchi Muyo in Love many years ago, and loving both versions. This film IS a little confusing, even for people who know the mythos, but the soundtrack is one of the greatest anime film soundtracks ever, composed by Christopher Franke of Tangerine Dream. I bought the soundtrack CD and used to listen to it often. Unfortunately, a few tracks aren't available on TH-cam, which is odd. But the soundtrack alone makes Tenchi Muyo in Love an excellent film.
How is Washu having a galaxy destroying canon in any way a surprise or difficult to believe? This is Washu we're talking about. She is absolutely the kind of glorious crazy that would build something like that. Probably out of boredom. Or just to prove she could. The woman creates pocket dimensions to just casually chill in, put baths in, or just for funsies. That being said, I do wish Kain had been explored a bit better. In both design and concept he's kinda terrifying, and it would have been nice to see him expanded on a bit.
it might be because I am a fan, but I never saw one piece as being nearly as prevelent as naruto or bleach. I never remember seeing people or kids running around with apparel or yelling "gum-gum *incert attack here*" meanwhile tons of people ran around with naruto headbands and memorized and learned the had gestures and would yell "bankai!" fucking constantly.
I like that tenchi remtaining his existence by sheer will is the closest this movie gets to the ryo'oki characters. That is something straight out of ova continuity, in fact kenshi basically does the same thing in war on geminar, albeit to a lesser degree.

In the manga she is stated to be around 10,000 years old (however it's revealed in one of the OVAs that she is actually one of the three goddesses that created the universe but that's not important right now). I was watching that Techi GXP Galaxy Police anime on Netflix and one of the later episodes that started showing characters that the main characters were completely familiar with and I was like, "Who the hell are these people? They seem familiar." And then I realized, "I saw them on Anime Abandon!"
to be fair to answer why mihoshi and kyone aren't erased from meeting tenchi and ending up on earth washu specifically says the field "protects tenchi from the shift and so you are all protected" therefore tenchi is the only one directly protected from the temporal shift, and therefore they are proteced by proxy, thus so are the police girls

I'm guessing Canadian fans have forced him to try Timmies at ConBravo or some such. I've noticed that at Cons, whenever a group of Canadians discovers an American guest at a convention hasn't had Tim Horton's, it becomes a priority to make them try it. I've been guilty of it myself, honestly.

There's actually some solid plausibility behind why Washu's tech can surpass the boundaries and laws of Time, because as ludicrously smart as Washu is, she's always had a very unique specialty on a certain type of type of science field, which is technically Fringe Science by our standards. Washu always uses _"Dimensional Manipulation"_ it's always one of the primary bullshit reasons she can open doors out of thin air that physically lead to literally anywhere she wants. It's how she has access to her Lab, how the girls have a huge Bathroom inside such a condensed house. These doors don't follow the same rule of Time, kinda similar to how the Hyperbolic Time-Chamber in Dragon Ball Z works, wide open seemingly infinite space where time inside is sped up, while in the real world it runs normally. Also following similar rules to how an old game _(Blinx the Time Sweeper 2)_ portrays it, where Time is only affected in a given set of a dimensional limits, and yet in a separate dimension, Time is either unaffected, or non-existent. So to put it bluntly, Dimensional Manipulation can overcome, and literally bend or even break the Laws of Time. So the fact that Washu can pull off this type of Time Paradox Technology is totally plausible to me, I mean even the Mini-Black Hole Filler Arc for the TV series helps supports theory as well.
You take that back Sage! Naruto and One Piece aren't bad because there are so many fans everyone wants to be hipster about it. Naruto is sh*t because no other anime, in the middle of a tournament, in the middle of a fight, can have an entire episode that goes like this. Ahem. 'So and so is going to do something!' 'Omg she is going to do a thing!' 'A thing is going to happen!' 'Kakashi sensei, what's going on?' 'Well you see Naruto, so and so is going to do something' 'If I do something, something will happen!' 'She is going to do something and something is going to happen!' 'Omg, something will happen if she does something!' 'A thing is going to happen!' 'Kakashi sensei, what's going on!?' 'Well you see Naruto, something will happen if she does something!' 'I'm doing something!' 'She's doing something, but something may happen!' 'Something may happen if she does what she is doing!' 'Omg, she's doing something that may cause something!' 'She's doing something!' 'KAKASHI SENSEI! WHAT'S GOING ON!?!?!!' 'Well you see Naruto, maybe if you weren't squinting to make your eyes look like Brook from Pokémon, you would notice the same thing that EVERYONE WATCHING THE FIGHT WENT OVER TEN TIMES!' One punch was thrown that episode, in the middle of a god damn fight, in a god damn tournament. And I can't possibly go into the One Piece train. Because then all the main characters will be stuck on it for ten episodes and have flashbacks of the previous episode. If I could compile all the senses with Nami and company sitting on a train trying to look badass before they do a damn thing, it would outlast the five minute explosion of planet Namek.
Oh, how could I forget the sh*t female characters in Naruto have to go through. When I first saw Naruto, I thought that each squad was made up of two people who actually did something, and the female was their cheerleader, because Ten Ten is as useless as that one sound ninja chick, who was as useless as Hinata, who was as useless as Ino, who was less useless than Sakura, because no one can be that useless.
Coec_15324 One piece is great. The ONLY thing I hate about it are the flashbacks and having to skip like...5 minutes to get to the new stuff. I know that this is mostly due to them being so close to the manga and trying to buy "time" but that's never a good sign. The manga on the other hand is great. And Naruto...can't argue with that. The other, bigger one I have issues with is fairy tail and many people give it a pass. Great story but that fanservice....god is that fanservice annoying at times to the point where I have to cringe...HARD.
TherrusD Yeah, I just can't look past the crap in the One Piece anime, especially when it comes out one episode a week, The Water Seven Train took months, and I got sick of it, when I could read the manga. The Fairy Tail manga is great, but I never got into the anime, again due to time wasting padding, but it was in the middle of the fight scenes, so I never got invested.
Coec_15324 That's the general rule of thumb with these types: READ THE MANGA! That's what I'm doing with One Piece for example because I kind of can't stand the time wasting with 5min intro+what happened in the last episode + 2-3 minutes outro+what'll happen next week. And THEN add 2-3 minutes of still shots or scenerical shots as well as 2-3 minutes explaing stuff->around 10minutes of REAL episode. Fairy Tail I might add didn't have that padding like One Piece does. I dunno how annoying it might've gotten because I only watched till after the Edolas arc. Dragonball Z was worse in that regard though. 2 episodes of screaming at each other then throw a punch, see Kirllin getting owned and more yelling at each other or reactionshots to stuff said by everyone nearby. This is why I prefer shorter anime in general.
TherrusD The padding in the fairy tail anime is the magic circles that were at least in the first episode for each time they used any spell, it dragged out the fights with time spent doing the equivalent of saying the names of your attack, except in ancient greek.
I have seen little to no actual Tenchi, but I find myself imagining that they chalk up the destruction of Tokyo Tower there to another Godzilla attack! She's only a goddess in the OVA canon story arc. But in Universe she's the greatest scientific genius in the universe, so I just assume she has equipment that keeps track of time fluxes or something.
My biggest question about this movie is why did Kane go back in time in the first place? In the movie, they say he was drawn to wiping out those who has the Jurian power to be a threat to him again. Well, Achika was already dead in the present, so why didn't he stay in the present where no one had the proper power level?

You do realize there aren't many situations she can use such a powerful weapon, right? Using them in any of the OTHER fights you mentioned would have ended not only the enemy, but the *entire galaxy.* It was used here in an alternate space, where the only one hurt would be the enemy.
Now I agree with a lot of the points that Sage is making in this review - and that's speaking as a gigantic fan of the franchise - but he still got a lot of details wrong. And a lot of them are actually easily explainable - granted, the characters don't really do that themselves, but still! Like, subspace is an adjacent pocket dimension with it's own timeline that runs parallel to ours, so changes in the universe's timeline wouldn't affect that of subspace, and thus; that is why Washu's equipment wasn't affected. The biggest plot hole of the whole movie is why did Kane go back in time in the first place?! They said it was so that he could snuff out those with the Jurai power strong enough to defeat him again, but Lady Achika was already dead in the present! And they made it clear that Lord Yosho or Tenchi weren't strong enough to do it themselves, so why go back in time?! Granted, they say at the end that it was possibly her fight with Kane that had actually resulted in her early death in the first place, but if that's true, how would Kane have known that he needed to do that in the first place when Lady Achika was already dead in the present?! And oh, no; I've gone crosseyed!

Thank God, that I'm more of a fan of the second installment of the Tenchi saga, Tenchi Universe, than I am of this fucked up movie. At least with Tenchi Universe, it actually did felt more a reboot to the first installment of the Tenchi saga.

That's not a compliment...I'm serious, in Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki (the sequel series to the original OVA series) Washu is revealed to be an intergalactic, multi-dimensional, omnipotent goddess and is the sister of the other 2 goddesses introduced in the OVA series, Tsunami and Tokimi

I actually liked this movie, and yeah some of it's time paradox logic makes no damn sense but really has there ever been a movie that EFFECTIVELY handled time travel while addressing the issues of it? Not really. Personally I feel you should do the movie (3 or 4 I think) where Tenchi is imprisoned in a dream reality with a woman who forces him to love her. You would have fun with it.

I remember this series used to be aired unedited on afternoons around here, on a kids block, I seriously think the people responsable for it didn't even watch before airing it, or maybe it was done on purpose for the lulz. If it wasn't for jack's constant scheming there wouldn't have been a plot. So I'd have to disagree. the first movie Will and Elizabeth probably would have just been killed if jack hadn't been trying so hard to kill barbosa and get the pearl. In the first movie the focus is still kinda spread out however, so I'll agree to disagree with you . The second movie was all about him running from the kraken and using whatever he could to do so. The third movie is even more jack focused. He plans his own escape from death and then the defeat of the soldiers. So honestly I'd say Jack had alot more purpose than tenchi, who typically is reactive not proactive.
Tenchi can pretty much do whatever he wants. It's a rarely used latent power of being "the key".
Why does Washu have a galaxy destroying cannon just lying around? Because she's a mad scientist. It's in her job description. When she gets bored, she builds doomsday devices. She probably has a cross dimensional competition going with Professor Farnsworth. Who can design the most over the top doomsday devices? And with the Dimensional Cannon, Washu is way ahead.
The moment Tenchi begins to disappear, but wills himself into existence, reminds me of a similar instance in the Negima manga where a character named Jack Rakan was erased from existence by some kinda ultimate magic and willed himself back into existence to beat some sense into Negi who was mourning the loss of one of his teachers.

I hate the trope of overcoming impossibility with willpower but in this case it actually makes sense. The thing that makes Tenchi relevant is that he is a human who can alter and transcend reality. The power the three ultimate goddesses wanted to create so they could better understand their own origins.
So yeah, Tenchi willing himself into continued existence actually makes sense in the context of the show.

Washu is my favorite character too and if you don't want to think too hard on how she knew to prepare all this, just chalk it up to her being a goddess. Okay seriously, it kinda sorta explains how she knew, but her timing is so conveluted. Still, it's Washu so I'll allow it!
Washu isn't a goddess here, that's only on the original OVA series. But this version isn't too far off, as she is smart enough to make all-types of reality bending devices and doomsday machines for fun.

The movie was an excellent follow up to Tenchi Universe
I loved this movie when I first saw it and have a soft spot for it now. I saw it when SciFi used to air anime movies on Saturday mornings and it was one of my first anime that wasn't Sailor Moon or DBZ. It was nicely animated, the soundtrack was interesting, and even though the story was meandering, it held my attention.
Also yeah, in OVA 3 he literally wills himself into existence twice. Even though the OVA isn't related to this movie, it's still a power Tenchi has.
This movie shot me right in the feels when i was younger.

I remember watching both the dubbed and subbed versions of Tenchi Muyo in Love many years ago, and loving both versions. This film IS a little confusing, even for people who know the mythos, but the soundtrack is one of the greatest anime film soundtracks ever, composed by Christopher Franke of Tangerine Dream. I bought the soundtrack CD and used to listen to it often. Unfortunately, a few tracks aren't available on TH-cam, which is odd. But the soundtrack alone makes Tenchi Muyo in Love an excellent film.
How is Washu having a galaxy destroying canon in any way a surprise or difficult to believe? This is Washu we're talking about. She is absolutely the kind of glorious crazy that would build something like that. Probably out of boredom. Or just to prove she could. The woman creates pocket dimensions to just casually chill in, put baths in, or just for funsies. That being said, I do wish Kain had been explored a bit better. In both design and concept he's kinda terrifying, and it would have been nice to see him expanded on a bit.
it might be because I am a fan, but I never saw one piece as being nearly as prevelent as naruto or bleach. I never remember seeing people or kids running around with apparel or yelling "gum-gum *incert attack here*" meanwhile tons of people ran around with naruto headbands and memorized and learned the had gestures and would yell "bankai!" fucking constantly.
I like that tenchi remtaining his existence by sheer will is the closest this movie gets to the ryo'oki characters. That is something straight out of ova continuity, in fact kenshi basically does the same thing in war on geminar, albeit to a lesser degree.
Y'know maybe the reason Washu has an invention for nearly every single situation might have to do with her age. In the manga she is stated to be around 10,000 years old (however it's revealed in one of the OVAs that she is actually one of the three goddesses that created the universe but that's not important right now). to be fair to answer why mihoshi and kyone aren't erased from meeting tenchi and ending up on earth washu specifically says the field "protects tenchi from the shift and so you are all protected" therefore tenchi is the only one directly protected from the temporal shift, and therefore they are proteced by proxy, thus so are the police girls

There's actually some solid plausibility behind why Washu's tech can surpass the boundaries and laws of Time, because as ludicrously smart as Washu is, she's always had a very unique specialty on a certain type of type of science field, which is technically Fringe Science by our standards.
Washu always uses _"Dimensional Manipulation"_ it's always one of the primary bullshit reasons she can open doors out of thin air that physically lead to literally anywhere she wants. It's how she has access to her Lab, how the girls have a huge Bathroom inside such a condensed house. These doors don't follow the same rule of Time, kinda similar to how the Hyperbolic Time-Chamber in Dragon Ball Z works, wide open seemingly infinite space where time inside is sped up, while in the real world it runs normally.
Also following similar rules to how an old game _(Blinx the Time Sweeper 2)_ portrays it, where Time is only affected in a given set of a dimensional limits, and yet in a separate dimension, Time is either unaffected, or non-existent. So to put it bluntly, Dimensional Manipulation can overcome, and literally bend or even break the Laws of Time.
So the fact that Washu can pull off this type of Time Paradox Technology is totally plausible to me, I mean even the Mini-Black Hole Filler Arc for the TV series helps supports theory as well.
Dude Washu's lab is on multiple planets. Be afraid when Washu doesn't have an invention for any given situation.

One punch was thrown that episode, in the middle of a god damn fight, in a god damn tournament.
And I can't possibly go into the One Piece train. Because then all the main characters will be stuck on it for ten episodes and have flashbacks of the previous episode. If I could compile all the senses with Nami and company sitting on a train trying to look badass before they do a damn thing, it would outlast the five minute explosion of planet Namek.
Oh, how could I forget the sh*t female characters in Naruto have to go through. When I first saw Naruto, I thought that each squad was made up of two people who actually did something, and the female was their cheerleader, because Ten Ten is as useless as that one sound ninja chick, who was as useless as Hinata, who was as useless as Ino, who was less useless than Sakura, because no one can be that useless.
Coec_15324 One piece is great. The ONLY thing I hate about it are the flashbacks and having to skip like...5 minutes to get to the new stuff. I know that this is mostly due to them being so close to the manga and trying to buy "time" but that's never a good sign.
The manga on the other hand is great.

The other, bigger one I have issues with is fairy tail and many people give it a pass. Great story but that fanservice....god is that fanservice annoying at times to the point where I have to cringe...HARD.

The Fairy Tail manga is great, but I never got into the anime, again due to time wasting padding, but it was in the middle of the fight scenes, so I never got invested.
Coec_15324 That's the general rule of thumb with these types: READ THE MANGA! That's what I'm doing with One Piece for example because I kind of can't stand the time wasting with 5min intro+what happened in the last episode + 2-3 minutes outro+what'll happen next week. And THEN add 2-3 minutes of still shots or scenerical shots as well as 2-3 minutes explaing stuff->around 10minutes of REAL episode.
Fairy Tail I might add didn't have that padding like One Piece does. I dunno how annoying it might've gotten because I only watched till after the Edolas arc.
Dragonball Z was worse in that regard though. 2 episodes of screaming at each other then throw a punch, see Kirllin getting owned and more yelling at each other or reactionshots to stuff said by everyone nearby.
This is why I prefer shorter anime in general.
TherrusD The padding in the fairy tail anime is the magic circles that were at least in the first episode for each time they used any spell, it dragged out the fights with time spent doing the equivalent of saying the names of your attack, except in ancient greek.
I have seen little to no actual Tenchi, but I find myself imagining that they chalk up the destruction of Tokyo Tower there to another Godzilla attack! Poor guy, I wouldn't mind but he was chilling out... somewhere... at the time! It couldn't have been him! Does anyone else hear high-pitched screeching and crackling...?
Washu is one of the three goddesses that created the entire universe, how could she not know if someone had messed with time before?
She's only a goddess in the OVA canon story arc. But in Universe she's the greatest scientific genius in the universe, so I just assume she has equipment that keeps track of time fluxes or something.

My biggest question about this movie is why did Kane go back in time in the first place? In the movie, they say he was drawn to wiping out those who has the Jurian power to be a threat to him again. Well, Achika was already dead in the present, so why didn't he stay in the present where no one had the proper power level?

Now I agree with a lot of the points that Sage is making in this review - and that's speaking as a gigantic fan of the franchise - but he still got a lot of details wrong. And a lot of them are actually easily explainable - granted, the characters don't really do that themselves, but still! Like, subspace is an adjacent pocket dimension with it's own timeline that runs parallel to ours, so changes in the universe's timeline wouldn't affect that of subspace, and thus; that is why Washu's equipment wasn't affected.
The biggest plot hole of the whole movie is why did Kane go back in time in the first place?! They said it was so that he could snuff out those with the Jurai power strong enough to defeat him again, but Lady Achika was already dead in the present! And they made it clear that Lord Yosho or Tenchi weren't strong enough to do it themselves, so why go back in time?!
Granted, they say at the end that it was possibly her fight with Kane that had actually resulted in her early death in the first place, but if that's true, how would Kane have known that he needed to do that in the first place when Lady Achika was already dead in the present?! And oh, no; I've gone crosseyed!

Thank God, that I'm more of a fan of the second installment of the Tenchi saga, Tenchi Universe, than I am of this fucked up movie. At least with Tenchi Universe, it actually did felt more a reboot to the first installment of the Tenchi saga.

Time travel is a fairly amusing media gimmick, at first... as soon as it comes under analysis, you will see why it won't work every single time.
I actually liked this movie, and yeah some of it's time paradox logic makes no damn sense but really has there ever been a movie that EFFECTIVELY handled time travel while addressing the issues of it? Not really. Personally I feel you should do the movie (3 or 4 I think) where Tenchi is imprisoned in a dream reality with a woman who forces him to love her. You would have fun with it.
