Hell, they can even make liquor and beer out of dairy. I dunno if I had a point to this, but there you go.
Actually, the tortoise and the hare story makes a lot of sense here. Both the sister and the hare were arrogant enough to willingly sabotage their own success, thinking they'd win regardless, while the brother and the tortoise just kept on going and doing what they did best. It's probably a bit of a stretch, but it makes sense.

Series like Vagabond, Demon Slayer, Monster and Fullmetal Alchemist have all won awards. And Apocalypse Zero was a finalist in the FIRST ever one. As an artist, I find that admirable, and it's even sparked a few ideas of my own. Personally, I like the art style and the off-brand-post-apocalyptic-Kamen-Rider hero. yeah. A film can be as shit as possible, but if it's a grown adult producing something really mad or creative, then it is just as enjoyable as a good product, to me. EmpLemon has a good video on adults who retain creativity and use it well. I think this is a good example of that.
I know I've said this before, but I'll say it again. As batshit, stupid, and generally insane this Anime is, I can't help but love the MC of this. Also, the reason why you never see any of the people the movie name-drops is because this was 2 episodes of a planned 10 episode series. The rest of the series was canceled before any of the other elements of the story could be introduced.
Apocalypse Zero is great - some creative character designs, it doesn't take itself too seriously, and has many wtf moments. The OAV clearly wasn't intended to be a single release, so complaints about piecemeal plot are a bit inapposite. Certainly worth a watch.
If there is something positive that can be taken from "Kakugo no Susume" is that Zero inspired Jin Saotome. The one Capcom character that deserved to appear in more crossovers than just Marvel vs Capcom 1&2. And also, Tsumiko Horie is named after and played by singer Mitsuko Horie, who usually performed intro songs for *tons* of mecha anime back in the day (70s-80s). Horie's singing segment in this OVA sounds beautiful in the Japanese version, by the way.
Sage. Bro. I know this anime may have melted your brain by this point, but by 25:45 there's no reason that your common sense would have bailed on that. The reason that Headdad is mentioning the whole Tortoise and the Hare thing is meant to be a hint to victory. More rigor sets into the body, the easier the fight will be, so if he delays he just basically has to punch a statue. The thing that's confusing ME about this scene is the Tortoise and the Hare is more of a western thing. Admittedly it's a rather common fable of Aesop's, but I would have figured they'd have used a japanese analogy of similar message for this.
You know thats interesting, the sage said at the end that the Story about the rabbit and the turtle is totally pointless, but weiredly enough thats probably the very same story they are telling in thia anime. Look, in the fairytale the rabbit is so overly confident in his victory over the turtle that he willingly sabotaged his race by taking a nap. The "siter" here is supossed to be so strong that she could flatten her brother in seconds but she decided not to but instead reduces her chances to win up to the point where she looses, just like the rabbit. Sounds strange but after this review i clearly see this connection.
I was more surprised about the fact that this was not only based on a manga but the manga itself got a reboot by the same artist and took on a more serious tone without the completely insane bullshit. Makes me wonder what happend in between development of the concept...
My favorite thing about this episode has to be the use of a cover of Funimation's "SSJ3 Goku Power Up" from Dragonball Z over CensorKaiser's rebirth. You can barely hear it until he starts shouting, but damn is it a treat for someone like me =)
1:50 Nowadays, citric acid and alikes are mainly used. ... And it's not actually spoiled milk, since cheese isn't technically milk, since the milk fat and most of the proteins have been separated from the whey (the liquid). And when a cheese is aged, it's to allow certain chemicals to add flavor.
"If you knew how cheese was made, you'd probably never touch the stuff." Ohoho, no, Sage. I've eaten haggis and blood sausage. I've gutted salmon and butchered pigs. I know perfectly well how my food is made, and it don't bother me one whit. Cheese? Cheese's process of coming into being is a relief to hear about compared to other kinds of food.
I got done reading the entire manga and, once it cuts it out with the psycho-sexual stuff, it actually gets really good halfway through. Still ultraviolent and gruesome but it has a lot of Hokuto No Ken to it where it's ultimately a story of hope. Now it's nowhere close to as good as HNK but it ends up a pretty good read all up especially once you get past the first two volumes where this OVA is mostly made up of.
Thank god: it's the weekend, and I just lost my job. I'm not gonna be sleeping for a few days just seeing what I've seen. Excuse me while I take a nice hot shower and then find the most disgustingly cute character I can to burn into my retinas.
I watched this review several times now, but yesterday I decided that I'd watch the OVA for the first time. Aaaand...It's kinda fun. Some things are obviously better explained when you get the full context, others get even weirder. (Like how he bonds with his armor for the first time, making friends with it by warming it with his naked body while locked in some kind of walk-in freezer by his dad) It's just two movies a 40 min, so I'd reccomend giving it a watch. You can actually find the un-censorkaiser'd version on youtube.
I'd have been interested to see you review this after either reading the entire manga or the Wikipedia article talking about the manga and the anime. When this was made, the creators thought they were gonna get budgeted for 10 episodes but unfortunately the project got shelved after only 2. That's why there are so many seemingly unnecessary characters that don't have anything to do with the plot because they come up much later in the storyline. Sadly, this anime suffers from the same fate that a lot of anime in the 90's did because of the recession in Japan. There just simply wasn't enough money to finish a lot of these projects so they ended up incomplete and were abandoned.
Note that the scene where he's using 'sleeping gas'? That ain't sleeping gas. He's using chemical weaponry - i.e. sarin gas. In the manga, he uses it to wipe out an entire army of demons.

I recently got done watching the entire first half of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and that show's not nearly as bat shit insane as Apocalypse Zero is. I love that in Ghost in the Shell, you get the tinge of sitting down and thinking to yourself about the theme of a given episode, this... Is pure insanity at it's best. Not even a anime like anything on Crunchyroll is like this at all..
No; I was watching on my tablet and I accidentally hit the "reply" button. It wouldn't go away until I typed something, so I just pressed the space key.
Personally, I think anyone who is thinking about trying anime for the first time should check out Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet. Yeah, it's a bit of a mind fuck, but in the way we Westerners are used to, a bit like Leviathan meets Water World. Plus, the main character being an outsider on Earth is a good introduction to the medium, since he thinks this is all a bit weird, too. My only issue... A water covered planet is by definition definitely not verdurous.
I quite enjoyed the apocalypse zero manga, then anime. Only outrage I feel is that the localization of the manga was left unfinished, and that there isn't more of the anime produced.
I feel like now that I understand Bennett was characterizing himself as an overly cringy critic who focuses too hard on the negatives (him being inspired by the rest of channel awesome), I can appreciate his work on a deeper level.
It was the style at the time. A style some of us miss and enjoy. I mean his new stuff is good and it's nice to get a actual review of the series but sometimes i miss the riff views where they do review the stuff but make jokes about it too. I get why he doesn't want to do them anymore they can be exhausting to make just it would be nice to have him do these riffview style once in awhile for fun while also going deep with the creation of the series.
My brother bought this anime back when I was younger without knowing what it was. He was disgusted by it and handed to me. Once I watched it I gave it to a friend and told him to give it away after he was done with it. The cycle continues...
I dont even know if you will see this, but still. Do you remember a strange little anime that you could see some scenes of it in the "malkom in the midle opening"? That anime actually has a name! Nazca. And guess what, it has to do with the recarnation of spandex wearing aztecs in present day japan. Think that this sounds like your cup of tea for a review? ;)
I just realized, I think this anime basically took its plot more or less from Devilman, perhaps the latter half or whatever(except the main character is a sentai hero)
Having finally watched this anime I don't agree with some of the criticism in this review: Was Harara stupid for taking over the old geezer's body to fight in? From a rational standpoint, yes. But in an earlier scene he stated how boring it is being the strongest alive. Even shortly before he dies he tells his advisor he doesn't care about the rigor mortis taking effect, as he's too bored with life. He didn't fight with the sole intention to crush his brother, but rather as a way to get a good adrenaline rush. The father's pep talk actually did make sense. The hare lost the race for being over confident that he'd win anyway. Harara shows that same arrogance and confidence; thanks to his father's pep talk Kakugo realises just that may give him the chance to still win, and gives him the courage to finish the fight with a killing blow. How you come to the conclusion of this anime being the worst ever, I have no idea. I've seen way, way worse than this. It's not a masterpiece, no. It's not even great for that matter. But at least it was an hour of good, dumb fun with over-the-top gore and fighting scenes.
***** actually, based in the manga, even though he was in a woman's body he still viewed himself and preferred male pronouns and the other characters didn't really mind and saw him as a man even with breasts and vagina.
Just a note: "Whoria" is actually "Horie", which is a relatively common Japanese last name. Actually, I believe she's specifically voiced by Yui Horie in the Japanese dub.
Now let's all agree to never fight creatively again.

But like....I don't think I'd last too long in the first episode
I recently got done watching the entire first half of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and that show's not nearly as bat shit insane as Apocalypse Zero is. I love that in Ghost in the Shell, you get the tinge of sitting down and thinking to yourself about the theme of a given episode, this... Is pure insanity at it's best. Not even a anime like anything on Crunchyroll is like this at all..
7:11
OMG WE GOTTA GET BOB ROSS OUT OF THERE, HE NEEDS AIR...….
……….and a LONG shower, do they even make water hot enough for that?
Fill a tub with hand sanitizer, it's the only way!
4:32 was that the T-rex roar from Jurassic Park?
okay why is nobodies comments showing up?
No; I was watching on my tablet and I accidentally hit the "reply" button. It wouldn't go away until I typed something, so I just pressed the space key.
isn't there a cancel button?
Nope. Not one I've found, anyways.
Dear God! I remember this now! I accidentally downloaded it as part of an anime collection.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Jin Saotome being based off of the main protagonist in Apocalypse Zero.
I quite enjoyed the apocalypse zero manga, then anime. Only outrage I feel is that the localization of the manga was left unfinished, and that there isn't more of the anime produced.
This is like a Japanese version of Adult Swim except in this case they would blink.
I’m gonna write a shitty fanfiction where Kasuyo gets together with the nurse while Horia tries to be a cheerleader.
I just gotta watch this purely to see how crazy this shit can get.
I'm just glad to know ppl involved in this like Mona Marshall, Lex Lang, and Melissa Fahn went on to bigger and better things.
+adoranymphlupin At least Mona sounds hot! ////^^////
***** lol
I love her as Wolfram Bennett should really watch Kyo Kara Moah!
+Rayman Fangirl Well she's playing a guy though.
Yah! The Mezumi Ogata fans hate her though...
I love these reviews. I can't believe I never heard of this one. I wonder if he'll review Iria Zeiram some day.
he did actually. Go to his website
If only I hadn't lost it a long time ago.
Springtrap, you've gotta hold onto life! You'll be alright, everyone... everyone's right here by your side!
That Brave Little Toaster reference was GENIUS.
Finally, someone mentions those stupid zippers from KH
Everybody mentions those stupid zippers from Kingdom Hears.
Apparently Zippers are the new pouches.
@@schwarzerritter5724 Or belts, just ask Arc System Works.
I agree not to fight creativity, but I’ll fight to the death about eating spoiled milk laced with stomach enzymes. Cheese is just plane good!
I’ve recently came across Apocalypse Zero and I actually like it.
My brother bought this anime back when I was younger without knowing what it was. He was disgusted by it and handed to me. Once I watched it I gave it to a friend and told him to give it away after he was done with it. The cycle continues...
This is the anime equivalent of a Blaxploitation movie.
He can review this yet he cant review something similarly as grotesque as violence jack ?
I need to ask how is it worse? I personally never watched Violence Jack, so you know why I ask.
I think Violence Jack is a giant animated middle finger to all things good and innocent.
But will Censor Kaiser ever ascend to Super Censor Kaiser 2?
Having finally watched this anime I don't agree with some of the criticism in this review:
Was Harara stupid for taking over the old geezer's body to fight in?
I pause these half way to look for it and watch it, then I came back.
