Thank you for this video, it is very helpful. I bought an Outback and don't recall being told the fuel and heat lights were out before I learned the hard way. I am lucky I didn't blow my engine on the highway yesterday for being used to having light sensors!
Glad I found this. I failed my emissions again. It appears my CEL is not on at all. I don't know what else it could be other than a burned out cluster bulb. I have not removed the cluster for a while, so this video was really helpful!!
Thanks! Appreciate the video. Was able to change my own dash lights with it. Saved myself $300 as I was quoted from a couple mechanics to do it for me. Thanks again!
Nobody can say that you are the dim bulb out of the box. Nicely done! Time to break out the plastic cleaner and an old toothbrush to scrub down all of the plastic parts; you will never get to those again. (hi from Tishers on the forum)
Replacing the dash lights and dome lights with brand new LEDs goes a long towards breathing new life into an older car. You could redo the whole interior for like $25 and it makes a huge difference. Pair that with a thorough cleaning and installing an Android Auto/Apple Car Play head unit and for around $200 you can make your early 2000s car feel so much more modern. It's not that difficult to do it all yourself either.
If I use the replacement lights without the blue sleeve will it still be green after installing it? Like is there a green filter that it passes through before the gauges? I’m trying to replace them this week!!
Thanks @bruceyyyyy My daughter's '00 OB Wagon needs these replaced. Regarding the banner hanging from the rear view mirror, my wife has a window decal on the back of her '08 OB that has that same saying. "Not All Wander Are Lost". :-)
Awesome, just got a 2000 outback and the tac light went out, a little important with a standard trans. I realize this is a year late One suggestion is put the years in the video so more people can find this easily.
I would do all the bulbs that you can get to while doing this because it's enough of a pain and you know as soon as it's all back together again you know another one will go and die and its all apart again.
2003 Baja owner here, thanks for this video! I currently have two bulbs out and will be doing it myself thanks to your video!! One question though, what is the yellow tool you're using? Kinda looks like a spork???
It's a plastic trim removal tool. Pretty handy piece when working with trim since it's a lot harder to leave marks. You can also use a plastic knife but they aren't as strong.
That is a trim lever. Made to pop plastic parts off. They are tapered to slid into tight spaces and bend without causing much damage. You can find them at any auto parts store.
If you wanted to replace all bulbs in the dash, how many of each type ( 74 & 194 (?) ) would you need to order ? Does anybody know of a good aftermarket brand to use ??
What a pita!...THanks....only the right side of my dash is out...think Ill wait til its all dark,,,,any tips on determining which bulbs are bad or are they so cheap you do all?
Great video!! I noticed at 7:32m the clock and trip meter debris inside the cluster, same as my 2002 Liberty (Australian version of Legacy). Does anyone know if there is any way to access/clean these? Vacuuming from outside is no help at all!)
I replaced with standard bulbs and they are brighter but still show green. The illumination knob fixes the brightness issue as I can simply turn down the brightness but have it brighter than factory if desired.
@@bruceyyyyy I think so, but every gear light is working except one of them is gear light in D and I don’t know how to find or take the D light bulb out from the cluster
Creo que debe desmontar aún más la placa de lo que se muestra aquí, ya que están soldados a la placa base. Sin embargo, he oído hablar de personas que arruinan su clúster al abrirlo más de lo que se muestra aquí. Con precaución.
@@MrRustyB100 Correct. However I believe that each model, trim, etc will have a different number of bulbs. Not VDC cars won't have the VDC and Trac light. Non Baja won't have the pass through icon. Etc. They're likely all the same bulb though so buying a couple extra won't be much issue.

Me tooo!! The only thing wrong with her
Are you saying that if I remove an 02 sensor it won't throw a CEL?
I could pull the engine faster than replacing a light bulb.

I just fixed the dim dash lights in our Outback, thanks so much!
Okay then...now I know. And I may just give this an attempt. Thanks for an easy to follow DYI video
A very good video on a rather lengthy process. Thanks!!!
A professional mechanik told me recently that it takes 1.5 hour to replace this bulb in Subary dealer center. Of course I believe him.
Whats the shop rate?
I just got an estimate of about $600 to replace these bulbs.

The blue sleeve paired with the yellow light makes the dash light up green you would need the sleeve if you want it to stay green
Great video! Thank you for the easy istructions

I thought I did but looks like I missed it! Thanks for the suggestion!
Hazzard button looked most tedious. I'll use Saws-all for that part. ; )
Thank made the job of swapping a faulty temp sensor under 15 minutes

Your local Harbor Freight Tools has a 4- or 5-pack for $3-$5
Hmm.. Ya know I do believe it's not bothering me that much anymore having that light out, yeup..
I know the bigger bulbs are #194 what are the smaller bulbs number? (2002 Sub Outback limited)
74

The replacement bulbs I got don't fit in the tiny bulb slots. There's also a large light I can't find a replacement for either
Update: the tiny bulbs are not replaceable but I didn't really need to replace them. The large one is a T10 size
What a pita!...THanks....only the right side of my dash is out...think Ill wait til its all dark,,,,any tips on determining which bulbs are bad or are they so cheap you do all?
I got all 4 for less than $5
Perfect! Thank you!
After replacing the instrument cluster bulbs, none are working as well as the RPM needle not working- Any tips?

would be helpful if you mention what YR your car is, as they are not all the same lol
00-04 Legacy/Outback. 03-06 Baja. All the same I believe.
Should I disconnect the battery?
Does this access the LCD display lighting? Im assuming so.
Do you know off hand what the size of the small bulbs for the check engine, oil, and etc?
I believe they're automotive type 74 bulbs. You'll need 14 I think.
Thanks more doing this video. :)
Thanks for watching! I have several how to guides from the VDC Baja project coming.
Which part of the cluster is the gear light?
I don’t know where it is?
The center stack. Is yours burned out? I'm not sure if that is replaceable.
@@bruceyyyyy I think so, but every gear light is working except one of them is gear light in D and I don’t know how to find or take the D light bulb out from the cluster
Two screws and you are looking at the cluster four screws cluster is out
does the position of those bulbs matter for polarity?
I don't believe so unless using LED
Hola, soy de chile, no he encontrado mucha ayuda.
Sabes como cambiar las luces que seleccionan PRND?

Does anyone know if this would help for an 05 legacy?
Thanks for the simple video bud. Do you know how to fix the heated seats for an 03 outback. I can't find the fuse for it. Thanks
I would guess the Element is burned up in the seat. It's the only time I've seen it fail.
You should put in the title what years this applies to.
Done. (:
Thanks
What if I don’t have metal stucco lath?
Is there an LED option so I never have to attempt this ever again
I believe so.
Do the 4 main bulbs illuminate the clock and odometer area as well or is that a separate bulb??
How many bulbs total does it take to change all of the bulbs?
I believe 4.
4 of the "big" bulbs, yes. But you pulled out a smaller bulb also.
It looks like there are more of the smaller bulbs, yes?

All of mine went out at the same time. I think it's my dimmer switch. No dash, trans heating or radio.
Fuse?
Thanks but I'll use my flashlight at night...
Lmaooo glad I’m not the only one doing this
thanks !
That’s a lot of work😢
It’s crazy to me that people pay for stuff like this… so many things are easy to fix on a car.
2000-2004? it doesnt need green bulbs?
No it doesn't. The dash is green.

Not sure. The edit there?
Cruise set bulb tho
What huh?
