The Dealer wanted $200 to change four #74 bulbs!! After watching your video it only took me 30 minutes to do. Can't thank you enough for taking the time to demonstrate this procedure.
Brian...this is the best Subaru Impreza how to I've ever seen. I have a 2002 Impreza Outback Sport and its sitting in the driveway. Started taking the instrument cluster out and have done it before. Realizing I couldn't remember what I did, I came inside and hit youtube to take a shot at an instructional video. Watching you is like having a buddy come by and do this for you while you lean against the driver's side door with the window down watching. Good one! Thanks.
This is an awesome video and saved me a lot of money! The dealer wanted $200 to fix some dash lights on my 2006 Impreza 2.5i. For about 8 dollars, I replaced all the bulbs myself and it took about 20 minutes. The dash on my car is exactly the same as the one in this video. I'm not very good with fixing cars but this was VERY simple, thanks to Brian's video. I bought the E74 bulbs online after reading that they fit into the sockets slightly easier than the stock 74 bulbs. Also, I read that the dashboard gauges have their own colored tint on them so it's best to stick with the white bulbs, rather than some other color. But the bulbs are super cheap so you could get creative. Thanks Brian. Look for a shiny new STi in your driveway (as soon as I win the lottery)!
good video. Just did my 2003 wrx. couple things i'll add for everyone. My green covers were dry as a bone and basically disintegrated when i touched them. Most places I have looked for them are fairly expensive or no longer exist. The main dash area is still green without the green covers, so not a huge deal for me.. I have the OEM boost gauge as well that went out. That needs a cover because without one its super bright white and distracting at night, not sure what im going to do about it at this point.. The boost gauge made the pod hard to get out. had to really squeeze things to get it to come out. The middle plug was much harder to get out and does not have the same exact way of coming out. my car is around 17 years old and the plastic face was kinda scratched up and beat. I used some rubbing compound and my torq DA polisher to buff it out. It worked AMAZING. cleaned up all the marks and it super clean. it looks brand new. Also, couldn't believe all the dirt behind my dash. was pretty surprising how dirty it was.
Power is a function available in some markets for the automatic transmissions. It holds the gears longer before shifting. I don't think it was ever available USDM. The High & Low lights were for a dual range transmission that only Australia ever seems to get.
Hey you did it again, i just replaced my bulbs on my Mazda protoge dash but it was a little more difficult, I used a bike tire tool (plastic one) to remove bezels. But when I put it all back together , my dimmer switch light quit working, as well as defrost switch light and cruise control switch light. Keep making videos buddy and I'll keep watching and maybe even keep doing some of the same things you do.
I just did this a month ago for my bosses 2006 Impreza. That top middle connecter on the back of the speedo is a bugger to get free. The only working bulb she had left in there was for the odometer. The bulbs lasted over 200K miles lol. She would like me to replace the burned-out bulb in the center consul for the automatic shift pattern does anyone know if it's the same bulb as the speedometer or are they the tiny tiny heater bulb? Thanks for the awesome videos Brian.
Can you kindly tell me the numbers of all the other bulbs? I already have 74, but can't seem to find the number of the others. the far right of my speedometer is out and between. Thank you so much. P.s. My dash is a bit different from yours. I have a 2005 WRX
+50 for the 5th Element Reference: Aziz Light! I've got my cluster pulled out of the car and checked which bulbs are bad. Now its off to see if I can find them online or at a store. This really helped.
Very well done instructional video. I realize this video is already 6 years old but, can you tell me what years Subaru it is in the video please? I'm hoping that my 93 comes apart just as easily.
Off the top of your head... the mister on the front windshield wipers works but turns on the rear wiper. On an 05 Outback. Bought the car for my girlyfriend, and she never told me till I drove it the other day. If you know fine if not don't worry about it. Great vid Brian.
Hi Good Video! did you happen to notice if the warning lights also come out with just a turn or are they attached differently? I have some that are out on my Subaru. Thanks.
Awesome video brian. The same happens to me in my 2002 wrx when I turn my lights on. But then I just tap the top of the dash that's right over the cluster and the lights turn on hahaha. I'm sure it just a loose connection on mine. I'll pull it out today. Thank you for the video
Hey, so I am hoping you can help me out. i love your vids btw, your really thorough and have a lot of tricks to save a little time and money. I have a 99 legacy outback. So my dash lights were really dim like yours, I pulled the panel and replaced the 4 big lights. Then i went to Napa and had them match the small light and replaced it. It seemed pretty bright when I replaced the 4 big ones, but as soon as I did the smaller one, it was back to being dim. I did leave it connected when I did the second bulb, could that have done it? Or could it be a fuse?
Love the Subie videos! Keep 'em coming! PS, I've got a '06 WRX wagon I'm gonna be parting out soon and all your Subie videos are great - FSM's good, but just can't beat a video of some stuff.
Hey Brian I'm having the dreaded p0171 on my Mazdaspeed 3. And as of last night I'm unable to find any leaks, made my own smoke checker and nothing. I have a Cobb accessport tuner that reads live data could you do a video possibly explaining how to read fuel trims if you have a vacuum leak and what else I could check. Possibly o2 sensor?
Check your purge solenoid valve for leaks. You can remove it from the car, then simply attempt to blow through it. If you can it's bad and is causing a vacuum leak at idle.
briansmobile1 What a Champ! haha Thanks Brian good info to know. Honda's are about the same for instrument cluster lighting. Thanks again for a great video!
Warning from experience (as in, ask me how I know!): Changing bulbs in any socket while it's on, particularly if you're switching to LEDs, is a VERY bad idea. I was changing my map lights on my old Corolla, and left the switch on, and when I connected one of the LED bulbs, it lit up briefly and then went super dim. Somehow I blew the wiring or something in it, because the fuses were good - tried swapping them anyway, but no dice - and tried a new mirror, and it failed to work properly. What I'm saying here is to always pull the cluster wiring just to be safe.
Hahahaha Aziz Light! You legend! Also your vids are very useful dude. I have a 01 Wrx Sti that i bought as a bit of a project and a couple of your vids have been really helpful. Thanks from Australia :}
the 74 bulbs from sylvannia do not fit, they're slightly too large in diameter, large enough to split apart the little plastic housing of the original bulb.
Okay, but I find three different sizes of bulbs in my 2000 Impreza cluster. I ordered some 74 bulbs from Rock Auto but I don't know what else I've got.
Please don't use Armorall. The stuff is horrible. It will destroy everything it touches over a period of time. I don't know what causes it but the material almost becomes dependent on the stuff or it dries out and discolor the material it is used on.
Found this one on a forum... Power Light... The power light basically makes the transmission computer change its shift points, so when you gun it, that power button comes on, and it'll shift at higher RPM's than the norm. The Manual button is a very primitive version of traction control. When the shift lever is either 3 or 2, and the manual button is depressed, it will keep the transmission from going into first gear. By doing this, you have less torque, more evenly distributed power, and a less chance the car will slip. So, when the shift lever is in the 2 position the transmission stays in 2nd gear. When the shift lever is in the 3 position the transmission chooses between 2nd and 3rd gear. If the shift lever is any other position then the two above, the manual button does absolutely positively nothing. You're welcome, don't be a stranger!
Don't call them stealerships for nothing. 74 bulbs were like 30 cents each off rockauto
Hey Brian - just wanted to say I appreciate the small little details and techniques you put into these videos like the steering wheel hat trick, etc.

Thank you so very much! This is very empowering to learn how to fix my car. They wanted $150 at the shop to do this.
Whaaat 150.. I did it myself, took literally 10 minutes😂

It would help to know the year and model. Some Subarus have soldered in LED lights.
Lol i love the custom labels on them buttons at the end :)

I have an instrument cluster that is Illuminated in RED
does that mean it has RED BULBS , or it’s the DECAL INSIDE the Bezal
You are the 3rd video that I have watched that had the power light missing. Maybe it's only put in when that option is on the car?
Love the Subie videos! Keep 'em coming! PS, I've got a '06 WRX wagon I'm gonna be parting out soon and all your Subie videos are great - FSM's good, but just can't beat a video of some stuff.
Thanks very much brother!
I got the same isue with my 04 impreza.
I'll be working on it very soon!
Your video really helps!💪👍
Big thanks!
Thanks man! The flashlight trick, I can't believe i didn't think of that!

Thank you a fellow Mazdaspeed owner just told me about that this morning. I'll be checking that today! Thanks for the help guys
I'm guessing the PWR bulb is for the models with VVT? They may have a PWR switch to dump more fuel or what not.
What brand and model is that flashlight?
thank you for sharing
You bet!
briansmobile1 What a Champ! haha Thanks Brian good info to know. Honda's are about the same for instrument cluster lighting. Thanks again for a great video!
You're inspirational Brian - Thanks for the videos.
Hey Brian, is there a good way to remove the clock bezel on top of the dash?
just rip it out. seriously, just has some plastic press on tabs.

***** Oh, I failed to note I tested the LEDs, they're fine.
thanks very much!
I just replaced the entire cluster from a junkyard car and now my car won’t start, is there anything i have to reset or something like that?
Love the 5th element reference
If you pull the cluster can you still drive the car??
The odometer back light never came on. Does that car have to be running for it to light up?
Thank you. Made job very easy.
BTW Brian, nice reference to Fifth Element. :D
Nice sunglasses.lol just chilling there the whole video
Great video, thanks!
Thanks so much for this video

Welcome Al! My parents live in Adelaide S.A.
Hello from Adelaide
Currently watching this from Adelaide 👍

74 and 194
How to do 2012 dash diodes 😭 I want blue not red 😑 but it’s not bulbs like this in the back

Sounds like chap stick.... I call everything armor all. I use Mequiar's and Formula1. I've noticed it does tend to dry things out.
Use the Meguiar's low gloss stuff. It doesn't discolor anything, just darkens it a little.

thanks!!!!
You need a head mounted flashlight!!!!!! I have 1 and they are very nice!!!!!
Good vid
The picture at the end of the video shows your car has a manual transmission, but the instrument cluster has P R N D so on and so on...I'm confusied.
"Too close for rockets. Switching to guns."
legend
Hi. Do you know where can I find those tall bulbs for HVAC you mentioned? Mine all have burned, except one. Can't find them anywhere.
74s can be found in junkyard or ebay or super bright leds. For switches it is 7219 bulbs
Is it just me, or when you turned on the dash lights, I didn't see the multi-function display backlight come on at all.
Anyone know what size i need for my 2005 wrx gauge cluster?
I believe is 74 did you find them after one year lol
Why would the dealer want to charge nearly $200 to change the lightbulb on the clock on my 2003 Acura 3.2TL/S?
Cuz you hafta disassemble the whole dash to get at it, that's why. What a brilliant piece of engineering that was, Honda!
Forgot the odometer. :-)
nice! now take off that ricer paint off the headlights 😬
I work for subaru and toyota only owns 16% of fuji heavy industries!!
Your fuel gauge has no light now!
Your odometer bulb is still burnt out!
lol. a little 5th element there.
An automatic in a Subaru? Talk about lack of fun factor...
Yeap, even a girl can do it ;-)
I'm first. Just wanted to say that.
WINNER!
