  • A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician explains how do Toyota Safety Sensor work behind the scenes. How it ACTUALLY works.
In this brand new series on my channel I go over the often misunderstood and misused Toyota Safety Sense system.
I broke this series in multi parts following various components that this system uses. Starting with the Radar sensor then followed by the Front recognition camera and how the two work together to get you Radar cruise control, Pre collision, Lane keep assist, Lane tracing assist and more.
Believe it or not this system dates back Its origins to the 2004 Toyota Sienna of all Toyota models.

Fascinating...no matter how sophisticated the system, it cannot think outside its programing. Only a human can handle unanticipated situations--like the chaos of a construction zone.

I love LTA together with Full Speed Radar Cruise Control on a highway! Especially on long trips at the summer time. Some weekends I was driving close to 1000 killometers on my 19 Corolla Hatch XSE and I wasn't tired too much, I just was driving, relaxing and enjoying the view! Also I noticed it's a better gas milage when you use the full speed radar cruise control. By the way LTA and full speed cruise cotrol works perfectly even at night!

I must say that the Lane Departure warning helped me to improve my driving. When I first got my Prius with Toyota Safety Sense, the lane departure would beep left and right. After driving the vehicle for months, I was able to hone my lane-centering skills, and now the system rarely beeps.

Another great video. Thoroughly loved this series. Thank you for doing this one for us. In this video I liked that you talked about situations when you may want to turn the lane departure/ lane keep system off. Your right about lane keep assist. It is very sensitive in my Camry. It keeps me on my toes. The only time I don't like it is when going over a small bridge near my home. The system reads the reflector on he side of the bridge. It thinks I'm over the line and beeps at me everytime I cross it. I love the auto high beams as I live in a rural area. I love that it turns down the lights when a car coming the other way is approaching.

This series is the most informative series I’ve ever seen. Where it fails is I don’t know when it is talking about my specific model or level within a model. It would perfect if at the start I could enter my car info and it would tailor the info to my car. But I know that would be very expensive to do. However, it is leagues beyond every other company I have found. I love my 2023 escape hybrid, but I didn’t even get an owner’s manual. I don’t even know what systems I have in my escape. I have an escape because ford had one available when Toyotas were on a year waiting list.

Courtesy of a young lady who did not realise you have to look behind you when backing up I got to try a fancy new Corolla while my Aqua got fixed.
It was pretty cool that I started watching your videos about a month ago so I already knew all about it, so thank you for that.
My verdict is that it is absolutely fantastic. I love the way it slows down for cars in front and keeps a constant distance. I don't love so much the lane assist. Most of the time it worked well but when it didn't if I had not been paying attention it would have looked like my Aqua. So I think it is technology that should not be allowed right now because I can see it killing people.
The really cool thing is the fuel consumption. For the entire week I had it the average was 16k per litre which is not far off my Aqua's economy average of 20k per litre. I am putting this down to driving the whole time using cruise control.
It was with regret I returned the corolla today and picked up my Aqua.

LTA reminds me of years ago driving the tractor on the farm. The steering would pull toward any furrows or tire ruts to follow old paths. It feels like a bit of a tug of war when you need to be a few inches to one side or the other of that. On some of the roads of south and west Chicago burbs, LTA favors a bit too far left or right. So the steering wheel keeps nudging me back the direction of the "furrowed" path it favors. At least with LTA, I can turn it off as necessary.

recently drove 800 mile trip in my new 2021 Rav4 hybrid prime. On straightaways with clear road lines and nobody around, the hands on wheels sensor was downright infuriating! Every 15-20 sec., whether or not hands were on wheel, the warning illuminated, then beeped, sometimes was downright HARD to get rid of it, gripping and shaking the wheel. Turning LDA off is not a practical option. The best workaround i found is to quickly toggle Off-On the LDA button on the steering wheel, and you get another 15-20 seconds of harassment-free driving, and if you press fast enough never lose steering assistance. And don't worry--having to repeatedly hit the button keeps one from falling asleep. At the very least it gives you and passengers a break from motion sickness from the wheel jerks.

I find that the auto high beam works very well. I live in Wyoming and do quite a bit of highway driving at night. The camera on my 2021 Tacoma actually sees an oncoming vehicle faster than I can. This is probably due to the fact that the camera is at the top of my windshield and it sees the oncoming lights before they come into my vision. Sometimes the tail lights on the vehicle ahead are dim from dirt or some such and my high beams don’t deactivate as soon as I would like. It’s easy to dim them and the advantages far outweigh the negatives with this system. Especially since I have the LED headlight package I don’t want the auto system to malfunction and blind other drivers.

Drive a 2021 Venza. Safety Sense 2.0 still has a way to go before it is great. For example, the lane trace can turn off unexpectedly. Likewise, the adaptive cruise control can lose the vehicle in front at awkward moments. In sum, Safety Sense requires a lot of supervision, and won’t let you relax as much as you might wish, or even expect.

I also have a 2021 venza, the hybrid, I've never experienced the problems you're talking about.
I also thought people behind would think I might be drunk going from one side of the lane to the other with the trace on. Fun fact with that lane Trace is when you're on the highway and that solid white line follows the exit to get off the highway my car would try to exit the highway as well.
One day my wife told me about 3 months after we had the car she had the adaptive cruise control on and she said the car will actually stop by itself she didn't have to hit the brake pedal at all, that could hardly believe her. So one day I decided to try it myself, of course always keeping my foot hovering above the brake pedal just in case, and lo and behold it followed the car to save distance and that's that car came to a stop so did ours, shocker I was really surprised and now I have to believe her. Interesting thing is the car will keep track of the one in front and if the one in front starts to move within a certain time frame so does the venza it activates the acceleration by itself and keeps it at a certain Pace with the car in front. but if you sit there too long without holding the brake pedal which of course the car is now holding the car in a stock position there's a light on the dash that says waiting eventually it'll go off and then you have to actually push the gas pedal to get it going and the adaptive cruise control will take over it notices that the car is in motion.
It's been a real kick only this car with all these safety features and warnings, and almost self-driving. The thing I noticed about cruise control and having your hand on the steering wheel you can't just lightly rested on the steering wheel you actually have to put a little bit of pressure or you get the big warning sign on your dash that I don't remember what it says but it lets you know that you don't have your hand on it even though you had slightly have it touching the steering wheel.

Great video. I find it interesting though, I have a 2017 RAV4 with LDA and steering assist. I don't find it bad at all. The trick is to keep your entire hand on the wheel so it can sense it. I've never felt like it was fighting against me at all. I also love the auto high-beams, though I admit you need to take over manual control on roads with lots of turns. Unfortunately the camera cannot see headlights coming around a corner and pre-dim them like we can. Not yet! But these features make a 3 hour road-trip on the highway feel like an hour long trip. At least for me.

Hi, I've got that 2nd flavor of LKA in my gen 4 GS and it operates exactly as you described. What I find so strange is that the system wants to keep you on the left part of side of the road (when you're on the right hand lane). Which is kinda annoying because of the other passing traffic getting to close for comfort. I put al sensitivity on low so the 'drunken driving swerving' is kept to a minimum.

I like the LTA on highway driving. We own a 21 Sienna and a 22 Prius L Eco and it works well on both. You just have to get used to it nudging you around and know that you still have to maintain control at all times. The only time it's gotten a little hairy for me is when a highway splits in two and you may lose lane markings. In that case, you've got to absolutely take control and "fight" the LTA for a few seconds. Take the Nut's advice... It's not an auto pilot!

My wife bought a 2020 Camry LE one week ago and LDA has helped a few times. First time on standard she almost drove off in to the ditch or muddy/rocky sholder. She crossed the line but still had 1ft of payment. I moved it high cause most of the road she drives just drop off suddenly after the line. I know a few people who have gotten in bad wrecks or killed cause they over correct after going on the shoulder. We both find the system is gental and easy to overcome if needed. You forget to talk about the away alert system that help with looking like a idiot. My wife is very short so systems like rear view camera, blind spot, RCTA help a lot. Head rest in the way, rear glass up higher and smaller it can be almost impossible for her to see. Be nice if had bird's eye view so she can pull to parking spots easier.

New 2022 Corolla Hybrid Sedan with TSS 2.0 (Australia - We drive on left) I have driven 200 miles so far . LTA with Dynamic Cruise keeps VERY CLOSE (6-8 inches) to the right of the lane on a multi-lane highway, and VERY CLOSE (6-8 inches) to center line on a two lane road. (center is on the right because we drive on the left here) Both roads have very clear white lane markings which show up well in the display. QUESTION: Can the distance LTA keeps to the right or left of a lane be set or adjusted by dealer? If so, I will mention to dealer when I take it back for its 2 month check. Hi chad! You bring a very interesting question which I’m dreading making a video about. I agree that Japanese built cars were made better in the 1990s and early to mid 2000s but today they’re all the same. And people go the extra length to get that Japanese build car today and it really makes no difference. I invite everyone when the pandemic is over to go to a close by Toyota factory and take a tour which they offer in most factories so you can see the level of precision and dedication put into making these cars. I personally have been and know folks who work at the Kentucky and Indiana plants and they take pride in what they do to produce the highest quality Toyota’s possible.

What is your opinion on using the adaptive cruise when towing. I really used to dislike the old cruise control but on a trip the adaptive cruise is really a game changer. I haven't towed with my Tacoma yet but not sure how safe it would be when towing. Maybe if the road was open and not many cars it might be ok. I'm thinking not good on a more filled freeway due to needing more time to slow or stop.

Lane departure assist in Europe is absolutely useless.
Most highways have 3 lanes in Europe 2 lanes you drive in and a half lane each side so that people who want to pass you can straddle the middle and pass easily. I'm sure you can see the issues with this.

I drive on back roads a lot where I have cyclists and pedestrians on the side of the road and I like to give them a wide berth as a courtesy. I've found that these gimmicks are pretty useless and at worst dangerous. Many times full beam is activated then immediately deactivated looking as if you are flashing another vehicle. This could make someone pull out in front. The collision warning triggers regularly for no reason but didn't work when it was needed. I'm glad its it's only a warning on the display

I don't know if this means it will not stop or whether it means the lane keeping assist function is disabled. The statement disappears very quickly. What does this statement mean? Hi bob! That message it totally normal. So the lane keep assist which is a feature in your car doesn’t work at speeds below 32 mph and the car is showing the message to let you know that. If it bothers you, you can shut off the lane keep assist and it won’t appear again.
