    I've just watched this again! These economy blocks, I've decided, are excellent for Tula Pink fabrics! I've never been able to cut down a section of fabric with a large focal center! I've watched large flowers like with Kaffe sliced into bits. What a waste.

    I made my first quilt last year and I used this block method in :)
    I want to start trying out some paper piecing. I bought that spiky tool you used for marking the lines, My niece moved to a new house recently and I want to make her something for the wall - have you got any house patterns you could demonstrate, using the paper piecing method? I've seen some on pintrest so I know they are out there. Just thought it might be a project you'd like to make into a video :) :)

      ***** That is such a lovely gift idea! I can definitely try to whip up something sweet and charming for you. I've penciled in the video idea to come out in the first week of February. Hopefully that's okay... It just gives me the time to make the pattern, test it and get it right for you all!
      And in the meantime, I have two paper-piecing tutorials coming out this month that you can definitely practice on! :)

    Hi Amanda, I have changed up your block but I can't seem to get the unfinished 9-1/2" square. I've sewn a 2-3/4" x 2-3/4" four patch in the middle instead of the single 5" square. Added the two 4" cut triangles to the sides of the center square. Continued on cutting two of the 5-1/2" squares and cutting on diagonal. This is where the problem ensues. Good grief. Can't get it to square up with 1/4" seam allowance. I've tried it three times now...same result. I usually don't have issues with sewing a 1/4" seam and checked their accuracy. Could you possibly give me some advice? Thanks...Diana

      @AmandaRolfe  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Diana Foree Hi Diana! Apologies for getting back to you so late!
      I've just had a bit of a play around with your measurements and if you cut your last two squares at 7"x7" you should be able to achieve the 9.5" block. You may have to trim the final block back a little but I think it should be pretty close to that magic number you've been striving for!! Let me know how you go and if there's anything else I can help you with! :)

      Lisa Masters Thank you! I'm so happy that you enjoy watching! :)
      I got my necklace when I was on holiday in Tasmania a few years ago. It's made up of genuine stones and gems, so the weight of it is quite heavy (and the price of it was a bit heavy too!!). It's also really cold when I first put it, which is never a pleasant feeling in the middle of winter! Despite that, it's one of my favourites!

    Amanda, you always mention that you use a "hot, steamy iron", when I've used steam i find my block distorts a bit, am I maybe using too much steam? I've seen other people use steam, but their's don't seem to lose shape. I can't seem to figure out what I might be doing different, do have any suggestions? I do find that the seams lay smoother when I use steam, but the block just ends up distorted somehow. I just don't know, maybe I'm just not a good ironer, haha. Oh, and have you done a tutorial on making binding strips? I always seem to have the hardest time with that. I can't seem to figure out the length I'll need, I always end up with so much overage, or how to join the strips together, those too come out wonky.
    Cute block, I really like the pink and red one with the owls!! I'm excited for the 2 videos a week. I enjoyed that during December

    • @AmandaRolfe
      @AmandaRolfe  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      pomomary Ooo, I hate it when the block distorts! There might be a few ways that you can rectify this problem...
      Firstly, sometimes it's possible to have your iron set TOO hot and steamy. I always set my iron between the 'wool' and 'cotton' place on the dial (similar to a mid-range type heat), with the steam set to 3 (that's about in the middle range of how much steam my iron will let out).
      Next, make sure you're action is 'pressing' more than actually 'ironing'. If you iron the block similar to that of clothes, it can then have the tendency to warp. However, you can still iron the bock in this type of way but just be really gentle and patient with it.
      And of course, the action of pressing and ironing out seams/units/blocks 'perfectly' comes with practice and figuring out over time what method comes most naturally and successfully to you. So just keep at it and the issues you're having will eventually iron themselves out! (Pun intended!)
      Great video suggestion! Can I let you in on a secret?? I currently have in the early stages of planning one of those Quilt-Along-With-Me type things where we make a quilt together and learn about every single step there is in making a quilt! Including how to make your own binding! A date isn't set in stone just yet as I'm going on holiday next month, but it will definitely happen soon!
      Thanks for the great question! And hopefully my suggestions help you out a bit!

    • @pomomary
      @pomomary 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the suggestions! I think my iron is usually on cotton, which is the hottest setting, So I will turn it down as well as lower the steam, I think that too is up to its highest. I'll give those a go and see how I do, and practice a lighter hand of pressing. Thanks so much. OMG, a Quilt Along, that sounds awesome. I'll be tuned in for sure. Can't wait!
