    Very clear and concise directions. This is also called the Depression Block related to the 1930's when quilts were made with material scraps.

    Amanda, thank you so much for doing your tutorial on the RIGHT way to do HST. There are a couple of tuturial diva's out there that do not bother to teach the correct methods and I feel this is a disservice to beginning quilters. I am very glad to see a young person such as yourself teaching the correct way. Your quilt is beautiful.

    I have watched quite a few patchwork videos and I believe very strongly that yours are the best thing since vegemite. Thank you, thank you and thank you for all your efforts. I appreciate them very much and hope that one day soon you will be richly rewarded for your generousity. You are the best. You are clear in speech, fastidious in your handwork and cheery. Best wishes to you.

    Hmmmmm clicked on your granny square quilt video. I’ve made one before using 2 1/2” squares and one more round of color squares before the background. But your comment about making the squares any size you like gave me a great idea! But glad you talked about your HST Squares quilt, the aqua is absolutely beautiful.

    I love it. I have piles of Charm Squares that this would be perfect for. Just got to get the white fabric. And of course finish the 3 other projects I have going before starting on this one. HAHA. P.S. That is a really pretty blouse you're wearing in this video.

      @AmandaRolfe  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      pomomary Gosh, I know the feeling! I have so many projects on the go, plus about a thousand more running through my head that I really want to start! :D
      Charm Squares would be perfect to make this block with! Great idea!
      PS. The blouse is new. I'm still a little unsure about the print - it's a bit 'hippie' like but I love the colours, although it being slightly big for me around the shoulders! Thanks for your lovely compliment! x

    Hi there, I absolutely adore this quilt and the tutorial is fantastic. Thank you for putting this on here. I am n a bit of a pickle. I love the idea of making this quilt top as a gift for my friend. But I wish to make a very small version for her to use on her babies pushchair. I have no idea what size to cut the triangles down to to begin with. Have you any suggestions as to what sizes to change the triangles to please? It would be about half the size of a cot quilt that I would need to end up with. Sorry to ask, but I keep coming up completely blank when I try to work it out. Thank you for any help you can give me with this.

    • @AmandaRolfe
      @AmandaRolfe  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +sharon anderson Thanks so much for your great question! To make a smaller version of this block, cut your squares out at 3" (instead of 5.5" shown in the tutorial), piece the squares together to make the HSTs, trimming each one down to 2.5" (opposed to 5" shown in the tutorial). Piece each HST together in the same way I demonstrate in the tutorial, resulting in a block measuring about 10"x10" (the block in the tutorial measures 18.5"x18.5"). From here, make as many blocks as you need until you have the right size quilt top you had planned.
      I hope this helps you out a bit!! :)

      +Amanda Rolfe Hi Amanda, I am so excited. I finished the baby quilt and it's so pretty. I am so grateful for your tutorial as it has resulted in something I am very proud of making. I have had no internet as the wind took my satellite dish down, so I didn't get to read your reply to my question until just now. I used 4.5" squares and it resulted in it being 4 of the final large squares in your tutorial. I am not sure how to upload a picture or if it is possible. I wish I could show you Amanda. Thank you and I am going to have a go at another of your patterns now as another friend wants a pram/pushchair quilt for her baby that she's expecting. Thanks again Amanda. X

    Wonderful video. I have one question though. If you press all seams to dark side, aren't some of your seams going in the same direction? Will this be a problem with laying flat?

    Love this block!! Do you think it would work with 10" squares? I have a beautiful layer cake I want to make into something that doesn't involve cutting the fabrics up too much (they are all so beautiful). I could use a solid layer cake with it. I am a new quilter - do you think that would be too big?

    • @AmandaRolfe
      @AmandaRolfe  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think 10" squares should work okay. You'll end up with a bigger block than what I did (obviously) but other than that, I think it'll be fine. :)
      Let me know how you go!

    I want to make this as a companion quilt to the Quilt Along we have just completed. Could you give me the measurements of the final quilt and any tips on how much yardage to buy?
    Thank you, Amanda!

    • @AmandaRolfe
      @AmandaRolfe  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ann Witten Hi Ann! The quilt that I made with this block measured roughly around 48"x50". Regarding fabric, I'd say to get roughly 1 to 1.5 yards of white fabric and you can easily get good usage from a wide range of fat quarters for the contrasting parts. :)

    How much material would you need to make the size you have on your tutorial? How many different patterns did you use?

    • @AmandaRolfe
      @AmandaRolfe  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can easily make this block using a 5" charm pack. I think I used about 5 or 6 different prints paired with a white solid.

  • @ruthtaylor3623
    @ruthtaylor3623 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you ever press the rows to one side and the next row to opposite side so seams nest together. What is the advantage of opening the seams first?

    • @AmandaRolfe
      @AmandaRolfe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that is how I press my seams most of the time - always pressing towards to the darker side if possible.
      However, because this block has a lot of seams coming together in the seam allowances, pressing them open reduces bulky seams and helps to nest the HST points better together when sewing the rows together.
      Hope this helps! x
