    My theory about Billy is that he either molested Agnes when they were kids and killed her to stop her from telling their parents but judging by what Billy says on the phone their parents found Agnes's body shortly after after which he was probably sent to a loony bin which he probably then broke out of like in the remake and went on a killing spree that led him to the sorority house. He could also have been jealous that his parents were paying more attention to Agnes than to him and killed her for it. He's so insane he seems to think he's killing Agnes over and over again by killing the girls so in his mind no matter how many times he kills her Agnes keeps coming back and he has to keep her quiet by continuing to kill her because he's so fucked up in the head he doesn't realise Agnes and their parents are long dead. Or he could even be making up all the stuff he says on the phone to scare the sorority girls and Agnes might not even exist. He could have been just a crazy or evil guy who snuck into a sorority house just to kill the girls in there for kicks.

      The OG progenitor of the North American slasher film right here. It is possible to pinpoint the precise moment when the genre was born. Before this; we just had giallo and Psycho. It’s also the first of the holiday slasher films that Halloween would go on to popularize so widely. And it’s genuinely both obscene and terrifying-a rare combo to find in the slasher genre.

    I love that we know nothing about the deranged killer, can't even see him completely. I don't want to theorize about his past or about what made him cuckoo. I just like that he scares the living creamed corn out of me.
    This film remains one of the most chilling horror movies for me, and every time I finish watching it I need to watch a sitcom or a funny cartoon show so that the fright wears off.

    A couple of corrections. First, the movie was not based on the urban legend of the babysitter and the stranger upstairs. It was actually this movie that spawned that particular urban legend. Before Black Christmas came out, that myth never existed.
    Second, the police were actually following proper police procedure at the end of the movie (except for leaving Jess in bed in the sorority house, in reality they would have taken her to the hospital). The police are not supposed to disturb a crime scene. They're supposed to secure the area and make sure no one comes in and contaminates the evidence. It's the Crime Scene Investigators who go through the house searching for and collecting evidence. And they actually say in the end of the movie that they have to wait for the forensics team to arrive. So while it might seem strange to us that they didn't search through the whole house, they were actually following procedure.

    • @jeremyforeman3216
      @jeremyforeman3216 ปีที่แล้ว

      wrong

    • @Thundarr100
      @Thundarr100 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jeremy Foreman about what?
      I watched a documentary about urban legends. According to the documentary, Black Christmas was the origin of the “The Calls Are Coming From Inside The House” story. Prior to the 1970’s it was practically unheard of for a house to have two separate phone lines going into it. Since that is the crux of the whole story, it’s highly unlikely that an urban legend would spring up with a babysitter in a house with two phone lines. Also, it’s extremely difficult to get the police to put a trace on a phone line. It actually takes weeks of paperwork and red tape to be able to do so. The movie gets around this by having Jess sign a paper giving them permission, but that’s a fictional thing that was written for the movie (it’s just a bit of fiction that makes logical sense).
      I also watched Black Christmas with the feature length commentary by the writer, director, and John Saxon. According to them, during the scene at the end when Jess was left alone in the house and we learn that Billy is still there, Bob Clark said that the reason why the police didn’t check the whole house was because they had to wait for the forensics team to arrive. He said that they had researched the correct police procedures in order to make sure that they were being accurate.

    According to director Bob Clark the original script for the film featured murder scenes that were more graphic. Clark however felt that it would be more effective if the murders were toned down and kept subtle on screen. Writer Roy Moore liked the idea as well.
    The film is regarded as being one of the first slasher films (with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), A Bay of Blood (1971), Psycho (1960), and Peeping Tom (1960) preceding this film). It set the layout for films such as John Carpenter Halloween (1978). However, director Bob Clark considered it to be more of a psychological horror film than a slasher film.
    In order to get the the proper creepy and raspy voice for Billy, actor Nick Mancuso had to stand on his head to compress the thorax in his neck.
    Clare's reaction when Billy starts to strangle her with a laundry bag are real, as the actress Lynne Griffin didn't know what to expect.
    The exact same line "The calls are coming from inside the house!" is uttered in this movie and When a Stranger Calls (1979).

    Apparently shortly after the remake came out Bob Clark was going to do a sequel to the original probably based on the idea he had when John Carpenter asked him what he'd do if he did a sequel where after the original the police found out that Peter was innocent and hadn't been the killer and that Billy was the real killer probably from searching the loft and finding Claire and Mrs Mac's bodies up there and finding Billy living up there. They'd have sent him to an institution and he'd have broken out and gone back to the sorority house on Halloween. He was going to bring Olivia Hussey back as Jess who'd become the new house mother but Clark died before he could make it. Bringing Jess back would have been weird since the film ends with Billy ringing the phone after saying "Agnes. It's me Billy" after which I would have thought he'd have climbed down from the loft, found the sedated Jess lying in the bed and killed her.

  • @loneronin6813

    I have to admit, I really like the primase of a killer who isn't in the limelight but is shrouded in shadow and mystery, wisely creeping about to stalk, mentally break down, and eventually claim his victims instead of stomping about with a weapon wearing a mask. The beauty of this concept to me is that the killer isn't necessarily a genius, but is still filled with enough guile that he knows how to wear down his targets and catch them unawares.
    I also think that while he isn't some kind of prodigy of murder, the nature of his maintained anonymity gives off a feeling of omniscience in a sense, his ability to stay hidden combined with pov shots instead of showing him outright only adding to that feeling. I'm not really a huge fan of slasher flicks, although I can appreciate them as well as the icons that some of them have spawned. However, Black Christmas looks like something I would really enjoy given the truly unique approach it took. Hopefully I can track down a copy and see if my initial thoughts are as prevalent in the film as I'm hoping. ^_^

    This movie could have been set at any time of year and been equally effective, so I wonder if the Christmas time setting is a pregnancy/childbirth/Nativity subtext to the pregnancy/childbirth/abortion tension in the plot intentionally, even though it's never mentioned.
