I remember reading about how they set a 1958 Plymouth Fury on fire this is 1983 long before CGI. And danger wasn't from the stuntman burning to death it was because the fire quickly burned all the oxygen out of the car.

I found it funny when I learned that Carpenter considered George Thorogood to play the owner of the junkyard in the final scene when she's crushed. But Carpenter reconsidered when he thought Thororgood wasn't a good enough actor.

I always got the idea that Arnie was being possessed not by the previous owner but by the image of the car’s “kind of guy”. Just like a toxic girl (and that’s very much what Christine is, a toxic girlfriend), she takes weak guys and uses her sexiness to reshape them into the guy she’s turned on by. The similarities in the previous owner and Arnie are not because of him, but because of her. That the evil didn't pass through the car between two guys but emanated from it in the first place. Even furthermore, the car’s a girl who hates guys in general, which is a typical thing for chicks like that, to take one man, utterly dominate him, and weaponize him against other men.
I think the movie’s angle on that is actually better than the one in the book, personally.

I can also see this film’s extended influence in Halloween Ends, which I also think is severely underrated. Plus, I also think this film can be seen as a rather extreme love story with Christine being alive and defending Arnie against those who harm him. Kind of similar to that episode of Futurama where the Planet Express Ship (voice by Sigourney Weaver) was dating Bender but acted like a jealous over protective girlfriend. Regardless, she’s quite an awesome car.

Been waiting for you to talk about Christine since I first found you over nine years ago. It’s probably an unpopular opinion but it’s my personal favorite King adaptation and second favorite Carpenter film. Watched it for the first time when I was quite young and it wasn’t much to me but rewatching years later I was much more interested, got to see it in the theater this past month for the 40th anniversary and it was delightful, it was also the last film I watched with my grandpa last thanksgiving before he passed away this year.
It’s a movie that will always be with me and always have influence somewhere I go. I hope to find some type of Plymouth from ‘57-‘61 myself someday as a neat passion project to make her whole again. I hope I won’t turn into what Arnie became though lol.
Thanks for this review Doc. I’ll always appreciate your input on my favorites and those I’ve never seen before

  • @RickMiddleton-1
    @RickMiddleton-1 ปีที่แล้ว +9

By far this was my favorite of King’s books and adaptations. The movie took its time to give solid character bios without drowning you in tons of exposition.
My belief is no movie ever made better use of the “less is more” ideology than Christine. Yes the movie may have sections that feel slightly bogged down, but those moments made you enjoy the moments with Christine more, and you didn’t need to have gratuitous gore thrown in your face to appreciate the suspense and natural horror.
Yes the movie is a departure from the book, but I feel both entities stand strongly for different reasons, and you can enjoy both basically giving you two different experiences over the same material.

The only criticism I have about the Doc is that he hasn’t really explored more foreign horror movies (not much of a criticism, it’s just something I’d personally like to see more of)

This really is a great adaptation of the novel. I don’t mind the changes they made as that’s normal for most book to screen works as Carpenter does still understand why Christine is evil. She is a disturbing vessel for a nasty spirit and that spirit is what makes her and Arnie so evil; that’s at least spelled out in the novel whereas Carpenter puts a bit of ambiguity in the film though still hinting Roland LeBay’s spirit is involved

The book had some pretty glaring ripoffs and plot holes-- but when it was doin' it's own thing coherently it was great.
I love the ending. Dennis, barely the hero the first time, sees all of those who knew and survived kind of scatter around the country and vanish.
He then sees a news story about the last surviving "bully" (who actually really wasn't one) being mashed by a car that bashed through the wall of his job out in California.
He puts together that Christine is back on the roads and on her way to take him out last. He reflects on now being too old and injured to do a damn thing about it when she comes to collect.

As many times as I've watched this movie, I never put 2&2 together and figured out that Arnie was being possessed by Christine's former owner.

I love the message behind this movie. A nerd who gets pushed around by bullies, his friends, and even his own family suddenly gets the power to push back. In other words, payback's a bitch.

A LOT of bad thinbgs with Phantasm, the Mad Max Cuda was not one of them.

It blows my mind that the good Doctor hasn’t touched the Phantasm series. It’s the one horror franchise where each instalment isn’t as good as the last but there is still a lot to commend about it.

Still a great movie, despite there being no marching band bullies. Can't wait for the Blumhouse remake. JK

1408 (2007) with John Cusack is an underrated King adaptation. Carrie and The Mist are my favorites. Maximum Overdrive is an absolute disaster.
