  • #TyraBanks has absolutely ruined the modeling industry. Along with #AmericasNextTopModel they put together a production that was designed to damage it's contestants. All they truly cared about was getting good TV and now these models have to live with their trauma. So let's get into it.

    • @shirin8609

I think the show wasn't about promoting a particular body type, but rather about manufacturing conflict. Take Sloan's example about gap teeth: in one instance it was "not marketable," and in another instance a model was asked to _literally shave down her teeth_ to increase the gap in her teeth. This was about creating problems where none existed, and then marketing the fallout to unsuspecting audiences as "real" and "raw" issues.

If not someone on a talkshow, then the press, a tv show or in worse case scenario a gossip - trash - yellow press will find someone who will gladly take every single of your monsters out! The more famous you are, the more people are ready to pay for 'insider information' to anyone who knows anything really personal, emotional and traumatic things about you and your personal life.... It doesn't have to be directly linked to your life, it could also be your parents, your siblings, ex girlfriend/ boyfriend... Let’s not forget so many other examples of abuse!! In season 2 Yoanna was constantly called fat and untoned even though she was already a size 2. In season 3, they initially praised Tocarra for being plus size then eventually claimed to suddenly not have the correct sizing clothes for her which broke her self esteem and they used that against her to eliminate her for “losing her confidence.” In season 4, Kenya was literally SEXUALLY ASSAULTED by a man in a photoshoot and Tyra basically just told her to suck it up. In season 7, Carianne was experiencing hypothermia from being in a super cold pool and was told to suck it up. Dani in season 6 sprained her pinky toe from a stupid walking challenge where they were ridiculously high heels. Dani also became very ill in Thailand and was threatened to be eliminated if she DIDNT LEAVE THE HOSPITAL AGAINST DOCTORS ORDERS. These are just a handful of examples!! The show is incredibly abusive. I loved watching as a kid but after rewatching as an adult, I realized how disgustingly abusive it was.

Meanwhile, in another show which is Hell's Kitchen, there was one time Gordon Ramsay called a contestant named Robert "Bobby" and it triggered Robert because Bobby is his father's name and his father used to abuse him. Later, Robert had a chat with Gordon personally and explain the situation and Gordon apologize because he didn't know. How ironic that Gordon Ramsay who is popular for being mean and harsh in TV has more moral than Tyra Banks or anyone in ANTM. Have you ever heard Gordon saying How many Michelin Stars that he has in any shows he's in like Tyra always bragging "When I was 13 in Paris, blablablabla." ? No.

I was 19 yrs old back in 2005 and I remember watching ANTM thinking "Wtf? How is this okay?!" I know 2005 doesn't seem that long ago but trust me, a LOT has changed since then. Even in highschool, bullying and discrimination was completely out of control. Teachers did nothing about it. Victims were told to "just ignore it" as if having an emotional reaction or getting offended was the issue. Suicides were a pandemic in the early 2000's. Of course discrimination and bullying still exist, but the fact that it's less acceptable in today's era and that victims feel comfortable enough to speak up is really inspiring. He said, "I finally feel like a person!" And I started tearing up. Imagine the trauma and mental pain that man must have had to not even feel like a human in his skin, and she used his pain for content and surely only affirmed and deepened his dysphoria. I battle with BDD in regards to my weight (10 years of ED to look skinny like the girls on ANTM, might I add), but I cannot even fathom how difficult it must be to have that level of dysphoria for your own race, something you are literally incapable of changing... at my lowest weight, I remember also finally feeling like a person. But when I inevitably gained some weight back I felt so much worse about myself. I can only imagine how awful he must have felt, when he finally got to live out his goal of not being black, then had to wash off the makeup. That could seriously fuck a person up. Tyra owes Yaya an apology. They all do. SMH
I cannot believe I actually thought Tyra was a role model when this show aired. Watching this show now is super cringe! 😭😭😭😭

Tyra should have had to do the physical challenges she made the girls do first. Show us how it's done, Tyra. Don't ask people to do what you aren't willing to do yourself

Dude Lisa got done so dirty. She’s so strong and amazing I’m so happy she stood up to them and didn’t put up with it

Let's not forget why shows like this exist. It's because of the people watching and enjoying them!

I actually used to enjoy this show.. Then I grew up, I learned stuff, saw that it was actually problematic, and learned.. Tyra, however, never really properly apologised for traumatising these girls..

I honestly don't think it's really a _lighthearted moment_ to pretend to pass out and play on people's emotions for fun.

*"They see me as a good looking person, white, with money, with class".... In no world did that man look even the slightest bit white. And he certainly didn't look like he had money based off of the way they sent him out there dressed. And nothing about him gave off the idea that he had class, especially since he was out there bumping into random people and saying hello to random people that were trying to ignore him. It's disgusting the way Tyra would even exploit someone this way that has some serious self hatred and emotional problems.*

I’m so glad you did this… I can just imagine the emotional damage done to everyone involved with this show

No wonder why the modelling industry has hit an all-time low.

My mom has a decent sized gap between her front teeth and I remember when we watched this episode together back when it aired she was legit upset. She was disgusted by Tyra and how she spoke about it.

The fact that they use the gap for tv now is a clap back. Also I love how Tyra said in other tv shows “I was a mean girl” and then proceeded to bully women on antm

When Tyra was a child she was a self proclaimed "Mean girl". Now the mean girl profits from her wrong doings.

Remember, Tyra was “discovered”, got ahead by Jean Luc Brunel , a notorious human trafficker who hung himself in jail in Paris. Tyra always gave Brunel credit for her career. Research what he was B involved with.
