I love that she doesn’t seem to know that there is an actual difference between Latin culture and Spanish culture. Latin culture itself is really diverse because of the many different countries with their own culture and tradition. She does not seem to realize that Latin and Spanish culture are not the same thing.

Latin isn’t even a culture though. It’s just a geographic term to say someone is from Latin America. Latin/latin@ in general is misused horrible by a lot of people. People forget that Latin America is also comprised of settler colonial states. There’s a reason people speak Spanish and Portuguese (white languages) for a reason. And explains why a lot of upper and middle class people are white or mestizo. And indigenous and black are low income and often forgotten by their governments unless it’s to promote their culture to attract tourist.
She honestly could've just been her true self, a beautiful American woman who appreciates the Spanish culture, and speaks the language fluently. That would've been pretty impressive and interesting on its own. Instead she created this unnecessary embarrassing scandal.

You know what’s even worse? She’s pushing this grift onto her children. She claims her skin is naturally tan and that she has honey eyes, clearly her belief of what a stereotypical Spanish woman is. She constantly points out how much darker her skin “naturally” is compared to her 6 very pale kids (nothing wrong with that), and that her kids don’t look like her kids because they’re so white. She also claims that people on the street had often mistaken her for the nanny because of that, when she’s actually naturally white too. The psychological damage this has done to her children can’t be reversed.

One of the reasons you can know she's lying is because she thinks latina and being from Spain is the same, which is not. Just because we have the same language (with many differences) does not mean is the same culture at all. We even have diferent audio and subtitle options in streaming platforms 😅
Spain is closer to as a people to the UK or Ireland than to Latin America, the people are by no means exotic! When I was a bartender in soho they both came to our restaurant few times, and she told me and to the rest of the staff that she was Spanish and even spoke in Spanish to us with an accent from Spain. I was shocked when the news came out with this story.

I would like to clarify something. Neither of them has actually admitted to what they've done so that's what I mean by hold them accountable. I dont think you should pay for the rest of your life for every mistake you've ever made BUT I do feel that way when you haven't even taken the first step of admitting it nor taken personal accountability. You can't just brush certain things off. Especially serious claims involving children or racial issues. These things must be addressed. When I was 11-13 I went to a school in the US that was mostly Korean and my friends were Korean so I started to pretend I was Korean too so that I could keep and make more friends. It’s pretty wild to see how this story has reached so many people. I am bilingual, Spanish is my first language, and I took many years of ESL and speech therapy to help with my accent and speech ability. To hear her fake her accent is just so so strange. I'm literally surrounded by multilingual people in my life, and not a single one of them randomly developed a different accent, or randomly adopted the culture of the other language(s) they learned lol. It's very annoying to see what appears to be somebody in a position of privilege saying she has "insecurities" about her accent, when it's clearly been exposed to be something she's done on purpose as a show, and then using those pretend "insecurities" as an excuse for her behavior. Not ok.
Not that this is the case in “Hilaria’s” case, obviously, but in some cases people with accents can turn them on and off (sometimes without realizing it.) Case in point, I noticed that HulloAlice, an artist you has a TH-cam channel, does not have much, if any, of her British accent in her videos, but when she was in a video with Chloe Rose (who definitely DOES still have her British accent), Alice’s accent came back pretty thickly. Not sure if that was accidental, or if she did it on purpose because she was around Chloe, but it was interesting to see. It made me wonder how often that kind of thing does happen with bilingual people, or even English speakers with different accents like Alice.
That’s not always the case, my boyfriend is from the UK and I’m from Texas, been together almost 4 years, & both of our accents have changed, especially his. We speak to each other so often that we’ve kinda blended accents & using phrases that the other would use. Not excusing her behavior at all as that’s totally different, just wanted to put that out there.
Maybe what she really means is she has insecurities about the accent because she’s afraid someday the few that believe it will call her out and the act will be over 😄🤡

Not gonna lie my accent changes constantly depending on where I am and who I’m talking to. My family moved county when I was a teen and where I am now has a very different accent so at this point, it’s a blend of both most days. If I go back home it comes back a 100% like how it used to be and then when I come back it tends to adapt after a while.

I was in Mallorca this summer. For those who don’t know Mallorca is an island in the Mediterranean sea and it’s basically a catalan a-like culture so most Mallorquin people are not that fond of Spanish culture. I mean to use the Spanish flag as a blanket or the shirt would be seen as insane behaviour (since living in an effing island they don’t care about toros, chorizo or sangría). Same with the veil which is more an Andalusian tradition. They speak Mallorquin and it’s a beautiful catalan dialect and they are so proud of it and as far as I know she had never even mentioned it. Another thing in Mallorca most common names are not in Spanish, traditionally they use girl names like Ona, Laia, Aina or boy names like Jan, Pol, Nil. So no one would name a mallorquina girl “Hilaria” which is hilarious (pun intended), nor name their children: Carmen, Romeo or Rafael. Gladly, in Mallorca they have no idea who this woman is or care what the atrocious stories she’s talking about them. To summarise she took most cliché Spain related traditions and made this Spaniard persona that is too damn far from reality. She didn’t even had the decency to research properly the place she was supposed to be from. Side joke it remembered me when Apu from the Simpsons wanted to be an American. 😂 If you ever go to Mallorca don’t forget to try chocolate “ensaïmada”, top of the best deserts!

I remember talking in Spanish to a souvenir vendor, asking him about a cat that was rubbing my legs and he told me it wasn't his cat, and his Spanish was totally different from that of Spain. I'm from Spain and I live in Spain (in Mallorca in fact, so the Island where she pretended to have been born), and this didn't upset me at all. I don't think this story is widely known in Spain so I told a couple of friends and none of them thought it was offensive at all. We think it's a little bit odd and crazy, but it's definitely not offensive, it's kind of funny. She isn't taking anything from us. Seems that she enjoys Spain and she likes it here... It's odd, but the only problem I see is that she lied to her American audience, that's not cool, she shouldn't lie to her audience out of respect for them. But she didn't do anything offensive to Spaniards...

As someone who is part Spanish I don’t really care about her wanting to be Spanish. But I think what’s problematic is her using an accent. Anyone from a non English speaking country coming to America will have an accent and have difficulties because of it. America is very oppressive to people with accents so her trying to co-opt that experience is to me what’s just horrible about her.

I love and respect Mexican food and culture, but that doesn't make me Mexican. I'm Puerto Rican. I saw a video of "Hilaria" speaking Spanish, in Spain. Her Spanish is good but she sounded like a gringa who learned the language. You can love, respect and even adopt another country's culture but that doesn't make you from that country. 🤷🏻♀️
When my friend was 14 her parents divorced. Her dad moved to Mexico. Two years later, she and her mom moved to Finland.

Even if she was from Spain she would still not be Latina. Latino/a are from Latin AMERICA not from Europe, as Spaniards are. This is a misconception that happens all the time and Spanish actors love to take up space in Latine spaces.

See, I’m a common white girl. I am IN LOVE with Mexico and the vastness of it’s culture. I am going to school for Spanish. There are so many ways to be a part of the communities, to learn, to respect. But that’s the difference. I’m SANE. I would NEVER disrespect the culture by claiming it was mine. If you TRULY love and respect the culture and the people, you wouldn’t do that. She wanted to be ✨different✨ from other white girls. She stole the culture and put on a bad act.

White girls aren’t “common”, white people are the smallest racial demographic on the planet, next to native Americans. Also, she didn’t claim to be Mexican, she claimed to be Spanish. Spaniards are EUROPEAN, aka white.

I think we all know she never claimed she was Mexican 😆… I was speaking from my interests and current experience. She loves Spain. Or she thinks she does. The thing is, Spanish people are white Europeans. Spanish women are white women. Spanish people colonized North and South America. They were literal colonizers, and one of the most powerful ones next to the British. They're not POC.

In my humble opinion and based on all the videos I've seen of them both, I think there are some very real mental issues. Perhaps some substance abuse issues as well. Hilaria is STILL speaking with the accent, even though everyone knows the truth about her.
