it’s wild that joel madden says when it came to the break up he tried to ignore it and move on, while hilary admits he was such a huge part of her life and identity just flat out states why it’s wrong for these older men to pursue young teenage girls. To the teenage girl it’s their entire world and one of their first serious exposures to a relationship where the elder has nearly a decade of experience to fall back on. It’s so unfair.
@@Ghfirrirhrjje while i do think it is relevant to address the societal differences between men & women and the way they socialize with others- i don’t think that it takes away from the facts. when you are a child and experience your first heart break that’s a world of a difference than being an adult experiencing your third, fourth, or fifth heart break. everything is new and foreign, and you haven’t had time to emotionally develop the coping mechanisms necessary after having such an intense + intimate relationship at such a young age. it’s an unfair power imbalance

I disagree. I’m 35 and have a 13 year old daughter. If a grown man comes around her it won’t end well for him. However in my opinion 16 is old enough to understand what sex is and decide if you want to consent. I think 16 is an adult with no life experience

As a parent, it’s definitely not ok to post a picture of your child like that, but also as a parent you’ll go through moments like “omg their so cute I gotta take a picture and send/post it”. She might’ve not really thought it through and just did it in the moment.

It’s really weird to see people talking about how common this was in Hollywood, but in actuality, it was common everywhere in the 2000s. I dated guys I had no business even being friends with as a 14-17 year old. So did so many girls I knew. It was never a secret and no one ever cared. It was so normal and I’m so glad to see things changing. I often wonder who I’d be if I’d never been involved with those grown ass men.

I think the reason people were "ok" with it is because they didn't see her as a teenager. Hollywood's 16 year olds are not mentally 16 year olds. People treat them like grown adults and they start making grown decisions. They are given things when and where they want and as most child stars they just spiral down and even though she didn't. Look at Allison from Pretty Little Liars, she was 12 years old working with 20 plus year old women. You can only imagine the conversations she was exposed to and culture of Hollywood adults. People treat teenagers like their adults at 15 and they haven't even finished brain development. How do they even make proper choices when your brain is flooded with hormones and developing. Any other situation and he would have been arrested but that's hollywood

Okay you say 2 years older, which I agree that’s still a difference. So my friend’s friend is in a relationship and I just recently met them maybe 2 years ago but they’ve already been together for 2 years & she was 19 and he was 21-22 so I’m like wait… and I did the math & he got with her when he was 19 and she was 17 still in high school. And none of his friends ever said anything to him, even to this day they are still together and it makes me look at him differently… they’ve had problems in their relationship and I always think back to the fact that he got with her when she was 17 and he was 19. Some people think that 2 year difference is nothing but I think it definitely impacted her judgment. Now she tries to break up with him and he gets depressed so she basically can’t. It’s so sad to see and crazy how his friends around him don’t think anything is wrong with it. They are both a little older now, she’s 20 and he’s gonna be 23 soon but it’s weird to me. Sorry for the long comment I just needed to let that out & also I’m glad someone else thinks 2 year gap is still a big deal.
@@Yezel93 I said more than 2 years. When you’re a teen, it matters. A 16 year old dating a 19 year old is weird. Why can’t the 19 year old get someone their age, someone who can actually go to 18+ events? I think it says something if they’re in college, but pursuing/have sex with a high schooler. I can understand if there’s a 2 year difference, and they started dating before the older person graduated high school. But once you graduate from high school, so you should no longer have interest in dating high schoolers. To me, it screams “I can’t get anyone my own age to go out with me.”
I think Joel played a huge part in her ED. Around the time they broke up… Joel later started dating Nicole Richie. She dramatically lost weight in late 2006 spurring ED rumors, her and Joel went public in dec 2006. And she’s been pretty thin ever since.

People searched for answers everywhere as to why that happened but then stories came out about how her mom was so domineering and rude on set. Sources said Hilary started losing weight in part because Hilary began feeling threatened and pressured due to all of the female fans and groupies the band had and that Joel was into small, thin women which made her feel in competition with other thinner, women, and after their break up he goes and dates Nicole Richie who was severely underweight at the time and who was/is the best friend of Paris Hilton and Joel KNEW that Hilary and Paris had a private “feud” and both had made vague comments about it during interviews while they were together, and Joel and Benji had often made fun of “material girls” such as Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, throughout their career, Dissing them for never working a day in their life, just living on daddies money, that everything they want comes easy for them because they are rich, etc. Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie were the epitome of everything Joel and his band Good Charlotte were (supposedly) against and he only reconfirmed it during his relationship with Hilary but soon they broke up, Joel and his twin Benji go and date Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton and make sure to take photos of them all together at big, glamorous parties, *faepalm*. Very obvious Joel was hurt and wanted to hurt Hilary by dating someone like Nicole Richie and by being involved with that crowd in general.
Nicole and paris haven’t been friends for a longggg time... Nicole did her dirty in a major way in public and they’ve never been friends of any kind ever again 🤷🏼♀️ Also Nicole has struggled with EDs like her entire life- pretty easy to prey on someone like that 🤷🏼♀️ I think he likes control and it’s easy to control someone who mentally struggles with ED every day (I think hilarys was more influence ED vs an actual mental ED you can never fully overcome)... also Nicole looks YOUNG... many pedos gravitate (eventually) to adults who look like kids bc then they can say, “oh she just looks young” so it’s then socially acceptable for a 40 yo yo be with some who looks 16 but is 30 🤷🏼♀️ Plus they can’t get charged with statutory

Hilary was my BIGGEST obsession as a kid, but Disney and any magazines for kids didn’t mention her dating life, which is cool in retrospect because they didn’t normalize this for kids like myself. But it’s hard to imagine someone I loved so much was going through so much. The ages of 16-19 are SO pivotal and if you’re dating someone who is your age, you grow and learn together, but he was 26 and could so easily just influence her based on his own experiences which is so gross

I remember hearing they were dating and I was around Joel’s age at the time. I thought it was really disturbing. But people acted like it was no big deal. Then she got really thin, making their relationship seem even more dysfunctional. He obviously didn’t want a fully formed woman. He moved onto Nicole Richie who was age appropriate but also extremely thin and rumored to have an eating disordered. Joel Madden is a total creep.

I used to really judge the 70s and 80s with how famous men would just openly date underage girls. But man, that stuff was quite literally happening right in front of us in the early 2000s. Maybe even now.
I was a HUGE fan of Hilary when I was young. I watched Lizzie McGuire all the time and had posters of her in my room, etc.
My mom started making comments about how incredibly thin she got when she started dating Joel and would say “I bet she’s so thin bc she’s dating that guy, I bet he’s making her think she needs to be that thin.” Then when they broke up and Hilary got back to a healthy weight and Joel started dating Nicole (no shame to Nicole, she’s just a naturally thin person, thinner than Hilary) and my mom said the biggest I told you so.
I’m happy she’s in a much better place now tho. Hopefully the iron grip of Disney will loosen and we will get that Lizzie reboot someday 😔✊
Remember Nicole wasn't always thin, she was kind of thicker on the early season of the simple life then became shockingly thin. Everyone said she was on drugs or it was an eating disorder.

I’m 36, and I was around for those times…so unfortunately it was usually ignored and accepted when men in their 20s dated teens in high school. I had friends who did, and we were young so we thought it was cool because of the access an older person can provide to a teen…definitely a different time
at the time, I was only about 10 years old - but I still have a memory of reading Hilary and Joel's ages in a magazine, thinking it was gross. At that age basically anything romantic is "gross" anyways haha
I agree when a friend and I were 16 we were at this party. She went back in a room with a 38 year old man. Let that sink in. Back then we didn't see it as wrong because we were so young at that time. We just thought it was cool that older guys were hanging out with us. I haven't spoken to her about it recently, so I don't know how she's feeling now about it or if it's affected her. It's just crazy, it's true that younger people can't consent. You don't see how wrong it is until you get older and gain some perspective.
this is actually true, I had alot of friends in HS date guys in their 20s, they saw it as true love, none of them ended up together. So seeing Joel and Hillary on magazines saying they were in love was disturbing. but they were different times. now that's not fully accepted anymore.
I'm in my early 40's and when 16 or 17 year old girls dated older guys, they were seen in highschool as being really cool. It was not a red flag at the time.
I’m going to be 35 soon and you are 100 % correct. It was even encouraged. I remember that you would be made fun of if you were with a boy your own age. It was definitely considered “cool”. I remember being in school waiting for last period to end and my 25yr bf would be waiting outside you could hear his music bc he had an extremely loud sound system. I was in like 8th grade. It was beyond gross. My older sister and her friends used to talk to older guys too. I had no idea what I was doing. I was far too young. They say hindsight is???
Dating an older guy whether that happen in your teens or in your early 20s, it would messed up your mind and more specifically your mental health. I'm not only speaking about my own experience but my friend's too. And the sad part is not all of us realize that was definitely a trigger because a lot of people normalize this kinda of relationships. I don't care if your parents are aware, dating a minor it is inappropriate, illegal, disgusting and it will make your feel inferior And unworthy. Please take care of yourself and the ones around you ❤️

I had a professor try to take advantage of me when I was 19. he was 35. took me on a date while I was enrolled in his class, brought wine and drank with me and kissed me at my apartment. I was in a super low place at the time, addicted to drugs and totally alone. I felt special that such a smart older man was paying attention to me. I became totally obsessive and weird, it led to him cutting me off. all the shame I've felt about becoming obsessive has made it hard for me to accept that he was at fault too, tantalizing a very young girl. he also was very aware of the dark place I was in. nobody knows that he dates students (and I wasn't the only one, i know of at least 2 others)... I hope having the bad experience with me a few years ago led him to stop messing with students. it affected me negatively, and even if it works out with other people, there is an inherent power dynamic difference between an older person and a younger person, which can be easy to take advantage of, especially if the younger person has trauma.
in HS I dated a 22 year old when I was 15 and a 23 year old when I was 16 and it's interesting to hear their friends still defend their choices.
I was 17 my boyfriend was 24 when we got together 6 years later I'm 23 we are still together been living together for nearly 3 years and I've never been happier thank you infact my mental health actually improved

Even as a teen I was shocked by their age gap. But I was more shocked by the fact that people just didn't care.
Another thing that I don't hear anyone talk about enough is Hilary's time on the Cinderella Story set. She was 16 at the time and Chad Michael Murray (her character's love interest) was 20 something. They were both uncomfortable with having to be romantic with each other.
At some point, one of the higher ups on set locked them in a trailer together and told them to keep making out until it felt normal :/

Hilary Duff has been a part of my childhood. Like many other former Disney stars, she's had it rough with her career as well. The industry itself is, well, problematic in a lot of ways especially for young kids out there trying to make it big as an actor, celebrity, model, whatever. Anyway, I'm somehow relieved that Hilary didn't turn out to be an absolute train wreck. She has a family of her own and is doing quite well, if I do say so myself.
Yeah I'm glad that eating disorder phase went away. She was so skinny.
Hilary Duff has been a part of my childhood too. But what upset me and got me disappointed in her was... I didn't respect her and her husband dressing up as a Native American and a Pilgrim during Halloween. It was highly insensitive, rascist and disrespectful to my culture

@@ad_kk16 I've made this mistake when I was younger, I think about 18. I wore a cheongsam dress from my dad's wedding as a last minute costume. I regret it til this day. I'm now 33. At 18 I should have known better but unfortunately I didn't. We all make mistakes. As long as we learn from them is what matters. I appreciate your comment and respect it. Good Charlotte was such a big part of my life as a preteen. I never liked Lizzie McGuire. Actually most of Disney I don’t like it. But to see how Joel dated an actual teenager is so disgusting that it feels like my childhood is tainted. This is insane and he even looks like a creep standing next to her. I do feel bad for Hilary because someone should’ve been there to protect her. Her own mother didn’t protect her and that’s so sad. If my child ever found someone older than at that age, I’d have a sit down talk with her or try to make her understand that it’s not okay.

I dated a 27 year old when I was 18, and even though to this day I can't name anything outright bad that he did, that relationship messed me up for years after. You just are NOT ready for someone that much older when you're so young, and it truly does impact you negatively.
I was around literally 17 years old when a man of 40 met up with me even though he knew I was 17 years old. We didn’t have a relationship but he kissed me and wanted more. But I wasn’t ready. Looking back (I’m 25 at the moment) I’m sure that I met up with him because I had struggles at that age with my health, doctors not believing me and friends not being there. I felt very alone and this guy understood me. At least that’s what I thought. I really regret that I met up with him back then

I was 15 dating a 21 year old and I thought that was fine. Then I was 21 who was going back and forth between dating/talking with a 38 and a 40 year old. I had no idea until I turned like 24 how bad those situations were that I was put in and how wrong it was. It just…idk. Now that I’m older I’m understanding everything and it just breaks my heart not only for what happened to me, but what happened and what is happening to other young girls and boys out there. The human brain (esp the frontal lobe which deals with things like risk management) isn’t fully developed until 26! This is why so many young ppl make bad decisions... also I think for us girls/women society pressures us to be with older guys (including talking about how immature guys are and how mature girls are as teens)... it’s kind of like we’re forced to grow up faster in expectations of our behavior (like as girls who are pre-teens/teens we have to grow up and not be a kid anymore vs boys can be childish forever)... also for me, I was used to taking care of myself (my parents largely ignored me- I was fed and clothed, but never really got any attention from them); and at summer equestrian camps I was always put with girls much older than me (due to my skill level- at 10 I was with younger high schoolers!), so I wanted to be like them- it was so wrong for me to start thinking that way and as a high schooler I dated some older guys- way to old for me... and at regular summer camp as a young teen, there were counselors (in their 20s) commenting on my appearance and how beautiful I was- I loved it at the time- like really loved the attention, but thinking back it’s just 🤮 to think of a 22 yo commenting on a 15 yo (and they knew I was 15... but I also used to hang out with college kids too coming from a college town and my parents forcing me to work as a teen).. I also remember as a 13 yo at a church camp, we were playing this game where the person who is “it” has to find someone sitting in a circle around them and make them laugh/smile and you have to say “I love you but I just can’t smile” 3 times in a row - a male counselor was “it” and came up to me and while trying to make me laugh/smile CLIMBED ON TOP OF ME, pushing me over so he was straddling me while I was on my back 🤦♀️ No one said anything! Not even our female counselor... and some girls were commenting on how jealous they were 🤦♀️ So even though I felt like it was weird and awkward, all these ppl around me were making it seem like I should be so flattered this handsome adult just straddled me on the floor- that really warped my mind and made me think the feelings I had weren’t normal and that I should always be flattered by male attention- esp older male attention 🤦♀️... I really wish I could go back to the younger me and give myself advice

And the article was basically raving about her "improved" appearance - and the whole time she had an eating disorder. Even back then, I had body image issues and it reinforced the message that you had to be skinny to be beautiful. I can only imagine how many other young people (Hilary included) felt. She wasn't even big to begin with. She just went from thin to too thin. Like WTF?? Don't encourage that sh*t, Hollywood.

20s, esp. MID 20s, really isn't that far away from a teen? I dunno, I am 26 and I feel like I was JUST 16/17/18. I am not saying they should date, but I have a 15 year old friend, and I like to help her with high school and stuff. :) So i guess just that they're still young, but they've been thru it, so they can help at least. but IDK about the dating part of it.
When I was 13 I met her she's about 7 years older than me, it's crazy to think behind her smile was a lot of issues. It's sad everybody allowed this ILLEGAL relationship to happen.

@@alanaaababy Yes I was a kid so of course she treated me like a kid and was smiling and gave me a hug and we took a picture b/c she had a meet and greet and I was the last one to arrive. I threw out the picture b/c she looked perfect in the photo and I had braces and pimples and hated the way I looked lol. She smelled fruity and not to be weird but I remember her skin being very soft and I just thought rich people prob spend half the day at the spa using creams and fragranced things lol her security guard was a huge black dude, I had a dinky little coach purse and had me put it on the table. I think she may of told me something generic like "have a good day" but i can't remember it was only like a 1 minute interaction and i didn't have social skills with anyone who wasn't in my age group so I didn't say much lol. but yea she seemed nice and normal.
For years, I was wondering if anything had ever happened to her during her Disney days because she was the only one that didn't have like serious breakdowns or any bad press or publicity, no tabloids, rumors or negative shit said/spread about her..
