    Rebuttal for George going after Rachel reading fiction. Studies show reading fiction is beneficial for mental health, EQ/social awareness as well as simply reading. “Reading can even relax your body by lowering your heart rate and easing the tension in your muscles. A 2009 study at the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress by up to 68%.” Much better than scrolling for over all health. Love the banter between you two.

    In regards to coffee: I used to stop and get a venti every single day. My now husband found out how much I spent and I think it nearly gave his young 20s heart an attack. That week we went out and got a Nespresso machine and frother. It has lasted me 6 years and is still going. It’s not as cost effective as regular coffee but we buy the Starbucks brand syrups so I still get my little treat but at home for a fraction of the cost.
    It also saved my sanity during COVID 😂

    There was a British reality show about 15 yrs ago. I think it was called the 1900s. It placed a single family of 5 or 6 people in a home from the early 1900s. They lived there for a few months at least. Breadwinners still worked outside the home at their job. I remember one family whose dad was in the military, so he had to wear the uniform of his rank from the 1900 time at work. The whole family wore the clothes. Gender rules were strong re: household chores. Period Bathing suits when at the community pool. No electronics, had wood stove, etc. I loved that show. I was definitely more grateful for what I had after watching each episode!

    Do you have tips to contentment?
    I know you say scorched earth in the debt paying off stage.
    My husband and I are in baby step 6ish and it's hard not to notice all the shiny new things some of our family members are getting.
    I'm confident we're in a more secure place and making wise decisions, the trade offs are hard sometimes in other ways.

      @itsandrew8758 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @blanketwodahs6741
      @blanketwodahs6741 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      100% debt free is not the only way to build wealth, I don't think the process has to be frustrating. I have a mortgage and financed cars. The house and cars are nice, not extravagant. Does this debt bother me? Nope. Do my wife and I have the income to pay down this debt? Yep. Why do we finance instead of cash? because that income is being routed to tax deferred retirement accounts instead of paying down cheap debt. We pay 3% in interest in exchange for 30% tax savings on the same money. Once you include company matches and market gains, the interest is not even a concern. We're talking upwards of +80% on the income we defer instead of paying down debt, every year. Where is this "snowball method" in any of Ramsey's processes? Maybe a real financial advisor could offer up more options than Ramsey. What's your tax rate? What accounts do you have access to for tax deferment? these are important questions with answers that are different for everyone. Any financial plan should be matched to the individual.
      We have a seven figure net worth. We built that over the last 10 years and we didn't get there by avoiding debt. And we didn't eat bologna sandwiches either. We have tried to balance enjoying life while making the best cost benefit decisions as they came along. Just another perspective..

    • @itsandrew8758
      @itsandrew8758 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@blanketwodahs6741 I’d be interested in hearing yours and your wife income. $5k a month in mortgage and car loans does not hurt as much when your earning $150k+ a year

    • @blanketwodahs6741
      @blanketwodahs6741 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@itsandrew8758 The payment amounts on debt are not important for the process I am describing. What is important is whatever excess cash you have to put toward debt vs directing that somewhere to save on taxes and have tax free growth. If you simplify a plan of "debt free", this requires a certain amount of excess cash flow. This cash flow is either to pay down debt or to build cash reserves to pay cash for things like cars. If you are somehow to pay off your mortgage, for example, you can't do it without excess cash flow. This cash flow has already been reduced by taxes. Avoiding taxation on this money puts more money in your pocket immediately. Depending on your tax bracket (state and federal), what you pay on taxes on that cash flow can be very significant. If your excess cash flow is $1500/mo, and you're in a 30% tax bracket (state and federal, pretty easy to end up there in CA), $1500 without taxes becomes $2,142 when you direct it to a tax deferred account. Every month. Now - there is a point low enough on the income scale where the tax burden can be very low, and in that case, the "debt free" axiom is probably the way to go. Maybe you are only in the 12% fed bracket and you live in a low or zero tax state. At that point things do look different. There are still a handful of other potentials I am not including here, but the long and short is: finance is situational and should be tailored to the individual. If someone is struggling too much with the super simplified, "cold turkey" financial plan, maybe there are some other options for them that a real financial advisor could offer.

    First time watching and I loved this episode. I was just talking with my husband about money leaks. We are debt free and I’m currently pregnant with our 4th. When the cravings hit, they hit hard. When I did a month review in Feb… we had spent 108 in Starbucks Fraps. I’m normally not a Starbucks person. I haven’t been back since! We now make the drink at home. My 3 boys are young (6,4 and2) and I feel we are constantly getting treats like Sluprees at Wawa or eating a fast food meal while we are on outings. We homeschool and eat every meal homemade but once every two weeks the kids will ask for outside food as a treat -problem is as a family of 5 McDs will be a 50 dollar outing. I’ve started a treat budget to keep this in line. But yes money leak are for real and can be damaging. Good insight

    Hey guys!❤ As a housekeeper, I approve George's Dr. Squatch bar soap! I made sure to let a client know (often) the Dr. S soap smelled good, was supposed to be good(ish) for him, and that it cut my SCRUBBING time from 1 hour (just to do his shower!!) to almost half that! He has unsealed tile walls (dark brown, so shows soap scum) and small , also brown, tile floors. So, LOTS of grout SCRUBBING to get all of the built up soap scum out. Ugghh 😢😢😢 I let him know I did the rest of the house entirely in the amount of time it took me to clean just his bathroom! (His wife and kids were not as high maintenance as he was 😂) anyhow, he stuck with it for a while then one day, the ol ' Dial and Ivory bars were baaaacck !!!😂 I think it was a Christmas present. And since we did exchange gifts,foe the years I was with them, I thought...hmmmm, maybe I need to gift him a big box of Dr. Squatch soap! 😂😂😂 I mean, it was also a gift for mw!🎉🎉

    I used to treat myself with coffee drinks each time I went shopping. It does add up. So now I make an iced coffee from home and take it with me and store bought coffee is only occasional. Saves cash. And not to brag but we do the Every Dollar budget every month and keep track with app and if you are done with a category you are Done. Each month we manage to stay under or at budget. Sure it takes discipline, but keeping on budget now since 2015 we have much less stress! ❤

    Oh Rachel! Stop Subway! They are sloppy with cleanliness in their stores. I use to go to Subway fairly often. But I stopped completely the day I saw a cockaroach trotting across the area where they prepare sandwiches. I was so grossed out that I haven’t been back for years and years.

    We stopped doing pizza delivery because it became outrageously expensive… we just keep a stack of inexpensive frozen pizzas in the fridge and add a fresh ingredient like chile or mushrooms and pop them in the oven. It is about 12-13 bucks for two pizzas that feed the entire family and literally take less time to throw in the oven than calling in an order… and less time to cut than answering the door

    Everytime the wife and I budget it comes down to "little treats" being in the way of starting the debt snowball. We started another budget talk, I'm leaving my debit card at home in my dresser except on the days I need gas and I am once again going to begin getting out of debt. I've been debt free twice and debt free but the house once. I can do it, I already have.

    My litlle treat is Dutch Bros for coffee. I put $35/mo on the mobile app on the 1st of each month. Sometimes i use all of it, usually not. I only get a latte once a week. I also jave a Starbucks gift card i use when i travel. I put all groceries, gas, Costco, pet supplies on my credit card and as soon as the charge goes from pending to posted i pay it in full before the bill ever processes. Every quarter i use the cash back for debit cards ro use for Christmas shopping. It is another way i do not overspend on Christmas gifts.

    Would be nice to see the monthly spending totals for the categories in everydollar app. Example: I would have to manually add up all the line items under HOUSING to see what I am spending. Also seeing annual projections for the line items would help. When you all were talking about someone spending $8 per day on a “treat”, it wasn’t that bad until the annual amount was revealed. Seems like this would be a good feature for everydollar app as well… to see what the total would be annually if you continue to spend the same.

    For me it’s definitely kids clothes. I buy too many. Recently I’ve started keeping some in my online shopping cart for a day or two and waiting if I stop “needing” or “wanting” it. I’ve saved some money that way.
    Also going to Costco / BJs less often helps. I always overspend at those big stores.
