If you’re only reading/watching one piece for the “serious” moments or “the best of shounen” moments or “hype” moments and not enjoying the journey and the comedy then imo you’re not gonna enjoy the series as a whole, that’s one of the best aspects and main story beats of one piece. Characters are unique and have personality they have things about them you love and things about them that annoys you it’s just good writing tbh but to be fair character depth is not a lot of people’s cup of tea most people do like the “hype” moments of series like fights for example, I’d just recommend sticking to series like Jujutsu Kaisen, series like that will keep your brain stimulated throughout. One piece is a journey, an experience, a very real fantasy very different from most series, the “hype” moments hit so hard because of all the down time in between you get with these characters to get to know them.

Shit happens and develops without the Strawhats being there, and those events have MASSIVE implications to the story. This world isn't one that revolves solely around Luffy and his crew, though they do gradually play bigger and bigger roles in shaping the course of history. It's masterful long-form storytelling and some of the best world building you'll see in fiction.

There are a lot of cool moments in OP (Water7, Sabaody, the climbing in Drum Island and sooo many more), but personally I love it for the backstories, for the fleshed out characters that do not just have just cool moments, but a bit annoying and tragic and hilarious like actual people, for consistency and interconnectedness of the story as a whole. I genuinely believe that no one would be able to tell a story for 20+ years but still be able to develop the story and the characters in this organic and logical way as does Goda.
I don’t know your tastes, so I can’t tell you if you’ll like it or get tired between the cool moments, but if you are getting on this journey I do recommend to enjoy the slow moments as well, because they’ll come back and hit you like a ton of bricks with a lot of “that’s awesome” energy.

Cause the thing with one piece is that it's not cause the arc's over that it's not going to be connected to anything in the future anymore. Oda's pretty great at being able to weave a story that's not just arc after arc where you almost forgot what happened in the past or it doesn't matter to the story anymore etc. Even now we still get to see characters return or plot points that get more clear cause of stuff that happened hundreds of chapters ago

The beginning of the series (in both anime & manga) hits people very differently depending on their taste. Some people vibe with it right away; others can't see past its immature exterior and drop out early. Most of the fandom insists that you have to read/watch through Arlong Park before you decide on it, because Arlong Park really shows you what the series is about, and what to expect going forward in terms of storytelling. In essence, the story does have a slow start, and even after Arlong it continues to slowly build arc after arc, building and building and building until before you know it you're in GOAT territory.
Personally, I will say that the manga has FAR superior pacing and artwork than the anime, but the anime shines brightest in the emotional moments (which OP has many of), making them hit 5x harder than the manga - due a lot in part to 10/10 voice acting and score. It will get you crying. If you want an experience which is somewhere in between, I suggest looking up One Pace, which is an edited version of the anime, copying the pacing of the manga and cutting out the filler. The anime artwork still never reaches top tier, but I think the trade-off for getting the audio is worth it.

10:24-10:30 : The longer One Piece goes on, the more one thing becomes obvious: the first 100 chapters or so are basically the prologue of the story. And while in a way, the Loguetown arc kind of gives it away by the town being described as the 'beginning and the end' in terms of narrative exposition, from a pure consumer point of view it has only been recently that the story has become lengthy enough that it makes sense to see all of East Blue as a warm-up to the story proper. So when you ask 'when does it get good again', you need to remember that the arcs in East Blue are 99% about introducing the skeleton crew of the strawhats as they come together, which are challenges Naruto and Bleach don't have because their main characters already pre-exist in the social constructs known as towns, schools and classmates and all the dynamics between characters that pre-exist. It makes the start of One Piece incredibly slow by slowly picking up one person after another, and it is only with Nami's arc that there's an established cast with dynamics that are being established where not every arc has Luffy introducing himself a la 'I am Luffy, I am made of rubber and I will be the pirate king!'.
Arlong Park shines because it finally manages to truly drive home the integral concept of 'found family' that makes the primary One Piece cast one people enjoy. (Yes, even Usopp.) This is something that will only continue to feature more heavily as their relationships are tested in various ways, and this 'human element' is also what future arcs and potential additions to the crew will focus on. The first major saga you are about to read (which consists out of roughly 3 arcs) still continues to set up a lot of elements that will matter later in the series, but between Luffy's growth as a captain and new crewmate(s) that have their own places and outlooks in life, I can promise that at least one arc is as strong as Arlong Park in terms of emotional storytelling, whereas the others are more of the 'fun adventure' types or 'defeat the big bad' type of encounter. Different people love different arcs more: One Piece is a mixed bag in that way that caters to a lot of different interests. But from here on, the story will slowly start becoming far more intertwined and complex. The same variety will be found in sagas that follow. (And to be clear: sagas are groupings of individual arcs that are more-or-less connected in some way, since arcs are typically a 1:1 match to the location being visited while also being their own story/conflict.)
In the past, I have tried to graph my appreciation of the various arcs / enjoyment over the course of the series, and the real value there is that the East Blue saga is a great baseline. I might give Baratie 7 points and Arlong Park a 10 while the stuff prior to that are between 4-6. Save for maybe the rough start, I consider all arcs of the next saga at least 7s. The best arc is just as good as Arlong Park to me, perhaps even a bit better. The saga after that? It is a polarizing one, but for me it is a solid 8-9 for all arcs. The one after that? Lowest is probably a 6, but the other others are probably like 15 points each. The stuff that follows is a bit harder to pigeon hole, but there's some definitely 12 point bangers on AVERAGE. Next fresh saga is a bit meh, and easily ranks the lowest in recent history by being like 6-8, depending on where I put the focus. The one after that? Give me a 10 and a 12. The one after that still? Probably 10 and 13. The one after that is impossible to rate, but let's just go with there being a 14 in there. As a whole, you can say that a linear trend line is undeniably positive: both the peaks and lows are almost always better than during the previous arcs.
Now, all of these numbers do not mean that for example Arlong Park is WORSE than some of those arcs that come later on, nor does it mean that the last arcs are the best the series has to offer: it just means that I appreciate the arcs more for what they bring to the table. One Piece becomes incredibly complex in terms of its story compared to its humble beginnings, and it is simply impossible to compare a simple fight between two pirate crews with the mess that involves half a dozen different entities with their own needs that have sometimes been foreshadowed half a dozen arcs earlier. It is the difference between loving the fable of Sleeping Beauty and Game of Thrones: the latter doesn't make the former bad; it's just not comparable. I love the simple beginnings, but when the scale of the conflict ramps of to kingdoms rather than villages, and the flashbacks start to involve entire previous generations, you are simply dealing with an entirely different beast. East Blue arcs are like a fast food burger to the seven course dinner that is the Wano saga as a whole.

One Piece, especially early on, is supposed to be like a "Saturday morning cartoon" in a lot of aspects.
It's interesting that even a lot of people who crap on One Piece for looking/being goofy don't expect it to be so "cartoony" when they try getting into it. Not realising what they're getting into with One Piece is why many people struggle to get into it. They expect it to be more like Naruto, Bleach, etc.
Even some people who are deep into One Piece forget/don't fully understand the type of story it is exactly and take it too seriously sometimes.
    Just an observation lol.

There's a reason why One Piece is a pirate series themed. It embodies it even in the pacing...it's an adventure.
Unless you're in it for the ride, and enjoy the "journey" instead of wanting to get to the hype parts, you would have a hard time getting into it.
The slow parts of the series is what makes the climactic parts of it impactful, One Piece is all about the world building, the little details, the slow buildup and the big crescendo...there will NEVER be another series like One Piece in our existence because the audience nowadays have shorter attention spans and One Piece caught the perfect timing and the perfect opportunity to create something like this.
Imagine you joining a pirate crew and being stuck in the boat with some eccentric people...would rather worry about getting to the next destination right away, or would you rather enjoy the moments with your crewmates uncovering treasures and mysteries along the way?
Naruto and Bleach are pure hype ngl, but One Piece is a love letter to ANY MEDIUM of storytelling.

    • @Aviertje
      @Aviertje หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Very nicely put. I tend to think of Bleach as gorgeous hype action art with flimsy excuses for characters, while Naruto is more well-balanced in comparison but of which the female characters are utterly two-dimensional, while the world as a whole is lacking despite trying to scale up. Its best story arc is the Nagato/Pain arc, and the second best clash (IMHO) is the one where Asuma Sarutobi sacrifices himself. The rest is mid or worse despite having good combat choreography. Not a problem if you read/watch just for the spectacle of the fights.. but that's not all a story is, you know?
One Piece has the worst combat choreography of the three (but still well in the 'above average' to 'good' grade!), but when it comes to the depth of personalities and character, the worldbuilding and narrative storytelling, it always hovers between four and five stars. Where with the other two series I tend to define them on 'this is what they are better than One Piece at', for One Piece I am satisfied with almost every aspect and just accept that 'yeah, Oda's fights are a bit worse, but perfection doesn't exist and everything has some things it isn't as good at as others'.
One Piece is the only fantasy epic that is drawn like a comic, and IMHO it is fairer to compare it to things like the Wheel of Time, Game of Thrones and Lord of the Ring than it is to most other manga which have very little in-depth worldbuilding going for them.

@@Aviertje OMG FINALLY SOMEONE WHO'S GOT THE SAME OPINION AS ME.
One Piece battle/fight choreo is dogshit but other than that it's phenomenal. It's a very stimulating series and although very childish which puts A LOT of people off but that's exactly the series' biggest strength. Oda's skill in storytelling and how page turn works is just *chef's kiss*.
Also I noticed that a lot of One Piece criticism comes from the anime mainly the pacing and Nami clones that aren't even that bad in the manga. most of them are spread out all throughout the series and doesn't even interfere with the reading experience compared that to AOT, a highly regarded series who has the same face syndrome in not only the main cast but the fuc*ing NPCs as well that you can't even tell who's who but isn't criticized as much because most people consumed it through the anime which was done very well. I really hope WIT would not disgrace OP like Toei did.

The advantage One Piece has over Bleach and Naruto is that it's the fucking tutorial level. It's a romantic story, and you'll start to realize veeeeery slowly that this isn't a story focused on arcs, or on checkpoints. One Piece is a story about our crew learning to overcome, learning to be better. It's going to challenge them, they'll fracture, you'll see them break apart before coming together. It's going to be a long journey, but if you liked arlong park, you're going to love the story in general. The themes are consistent from when luffy jumps out of the barrel and inspires koby to fight for himself. Luffy won't carry people, he just enables and inspires them.

There is literally a recent interview with a Naruto editor who said they knew they could never compete with one piece when it comes to story and emotion, so they competed with the art and action. There's a part where he quite literally says "Naruto is so successful because most people have low reading comprehension" and I see this every time when people complain about one piece being goofy, stupid, boring, annoying, etc. No, mf, one piece is fucking magic and I feel sorry for people who can't see it because they're obsessed with shallow hype bullshit.

There is an entire arc that you would swear is bs that has a major connection in a future arc. Just the little subtle moments that hit like a Mike Tyson punch when they matter. Not gonna lie I hated ussop and Luffy when I first tried the anime years ago, they take a bit to warm up to. Then all of a sudden you end up going back to those cringe moments and smiling, because you actually know these characters like real people.

Since it seems like we came up around the same era I'll put it to you like this: Of the big 3, Naruto & Bleach get off to better/stronger starts than OP does but the difference is generally people feel Naruto & Bleach get worse as the story goes on whereas OP continued to get better up to even now; it wasnt always my favorite but that reason is why it's my favorite now. And not just story-wise, Oda's artwork gets better over time as well (he was like 21-22 when OP first started IIRC).

If you didn't like it and it's not your thing; then stop, because you probably won't like the rest of the series. And If something sticks and you ended up liking it, you probably won't mind reading the whole manga! 🤣
Because East Blue sets the tone for the entire series! Yes, in some saga the tone of the manga do change, but it mostly stays the same! That Goofy ahh rubber boy fights big bad for his friends! 🤣
