    I paid like 30 bucks for sped up videos with no audio commentary that "teach" you how to model a character in blender. This video alone deserves like 100 bucks and its here for free with clear and detailed tutorial. you're da man bro you're going to heaven.

    When I was learning to oil paint under my art teach Ms. Cynthia Parsons we moved on from that to chalk pastel drawings. She told me I needed to learn to start learning to see a portrait in shapes. I understood but it really wasn't sinking in at the time. Looking at this tutorial in one video brought it all together. Thank you so much for posting it! Thank you for even posting the blueprints to download. They are a help. The biggest question I have is that I understand if it's not possible, could I download this video for my further reference. This video would be an incredible help to really getting the basics down particularly in learning to draw and create in shapes. Thank you so much for posting this video it was a lifesaver.
    Thank you so much and please take care. May God bless you incredibly today and continue your work.

      That's interesting! Yes that is a really good way to learn art, stepping back.Nd seeing the shapes first! Ms. Cynthia Parsons sounds like a great teacher! Oh that's a good idea, I've been thinking about maybe creating a gumroad page where people can download some of these tutorials for free! I'll be doing that sometime in the future once I have improved the quality of these a bit.

      @@RussellMidfield That's a 🍆 not 🍑!! Lmao. 😂 On a more serious note though, you're really good at sculpting, why not jump to Zbrush? I heard the Dynamesh is amazingly out of this world, as well as the zremesher. I'm a noob who can only do simple low poly stylised characters so I have no idea with their respective pros and cons just yet. 🤔 Except for the obvious downside of Zbrush which is its hefty price tag, of course. 😂

    • @RussellMidfield
      @RussellMidfield  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha lol its like a Farmers Market up in here! Oh yeah, ZBrush looks incredible, maybe one day! The biggest reason is as you mention, the price tag haha I'm a noob too, I couldn't tap into all that ZBrush has to offer to make dropping the cash worthwhile, I'm barely scratching the surface with Blender!
      Blender has so many great features outside of sculpting that makes it such an amazingly comprehensive, all-in-one program that I feel hard-pressed to find a reason to switch to anything else at the moment. I love how it seems to be getting better and better every few weeks as well, and all for free which is mind-blowing. Great community, lots of support and resources, modern UI, I can box model, sculpt, UV unwrap, texture paint, bake maps, setup lighting, composite, animate, and render with two great built-in engines all in one program! For my skill level, it's perfect!

    Hi! Great video, I have one question though. why do you make an eye with a sphere and then you cover it with a round circle? I don't understand why you didn't do the round circle only, thanks!

    • @RussellMidfield
      @RussellMidfield  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I like to use the UV sphere for the eye because of the way the vertices are structured. It allows me to create a circular well for the iris, as well as delete the centre vertex for the pupil. I find it difficult to achieve the same result with a rounded cube. I cover it with a rounded circle for the cornea, or the shiny part of the eye. Its not anatomically correct but gives a decent looking result relatively quickly.

    • @CrokedWillo
      @CrokedWillo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RussellMidfield so the rounded circle will have a transparent colour/texture in the next videos? In that way the iris will be visible, right?

      @@RussellMidfield Up to this point I only edge or loop modelled. Sculpting was never a great outing when I tried.
      Big empty ball.
      I always sculpted the same thing some big nosed ugly dude lol. A weird thing as I mostly model cartoony female models. This series plus the male one have inspired me to try my hand at sculpting again lol.

    • @RussellMidfield
      @RussellMidfield  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha I hear ya on the big nosed ugly dude showing up in every sculpting session haha lol 🤣 I struggled with that too, and still do, its hard to break out and create truly unique facial features that at the same time are appealing. I'm glad to hear man, its one of the few quiet reasons I like making these videos, I'm not a very good artist as anyone can plainly see haha, but i think they show hey, you don't need to be some natural born talent with 10 years of art training to make something half decent and have fun creating in the program. Keep going, you'll surprise yourself I'm sure.

    • @RussellMidfield
      @RussellMidfield  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To use the voxel remesh you need to be in sculpt mode. Just go up to the remesh menu in the top right corner and change the voxel size to your liking. The lower the size, the more detail you will get when sculpting. Then press the remesh button!

  • @Gaz_Game

    To animate, would I need to Join all the parts together or remesh and meld?

    • @RussellMidfield
      @RussellMidfield  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, to get it moving you'll need to voxel remesh/join everything together, then retoplogize it.

  • @PrescottLawani
    @PrescottLawani 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good tutorial! Can you use these types of models for video game characters? My faces were at 44k and tris almost at 90k

    • @RussellMidfield
      @RussellMidfield  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah you'll have to retopologize a character like this, once you're done sculpting, to get the polycount down. At this stage, the tris are too high to do anything meaningful in terms of texturing, rigging, and animation.

    • @PrescottLawani

    Well, this comment might not be answered, but when I try to trace out the foot with the single vertex I do not get a vertex like you do from the finger? What am I missing or not seeing properly?

    • @RussellMidfield
      @RussellMidfield  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, are you looking to get a single vertex? If so you can just add a plane, tab into edit mode, select all vertices, then press M for the merge menu, and then select center. This will collapse all of the vertices down into one single vertex.

    • @cartridgetown8411
      @cartridgetown8411 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RussellMidfield No, I just realized a few minutes ago that I am just being blonde as I forgot to press G to grab the darn vertex from the center. Apologies and thank you for getting back to me.

    • @RussellMidfield
      @RussellMidfield  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh haha lol, I feel ya! Another confusing thing that I used to run into a lot around the single vertex is being either in Edge select or Face select mode while in Edit mode. If you're not in Vertex select mode while in Edit mode and you are trying to do anything with a single vertex it won't work. Something to keep in mind!
