    I’ve been type 1 diabetic for 11 years (diagnosed at 6). Being on the Medtronic insulin pump and CGM has made my life much easier. My current HbA1C is 6.7%!. Due to my diabetes I’ve discovered a love for nursing, I’m starting nursing school (bachelor level) in February next year. Love from Australia!💚

    I'm a student paramedic so still VERY new to anything medical. I went to a patient a few weeks back actively having quite a big MI. Barely any pain, no typical MI symptoms (except he had vomited once, and the ecg stemi), and it is all because of their type 2 diabetes. Something that struck me was they said, I have been waiting for this day because of my health issues anyway. Really struck me and lead me to research what diabetes actually really is in terms of what else diabetes can do to a human body if not found out, controlled etc! Thank you for this video!

    I was excited to see this as I have been a type 1 for 30 years already (since I was 3). Plus I also work in a diabetic clinic! Our clinic is run with several nurses and dietitian as well as Internal Med Specialist and an Endocrinologist. We even have a family doctor who is a diabetologist! We also run Diabetes in pregnancy clinics as well as seeing type 1 and type 2 patients. There is a pediatric team of endos, RNs and RDs as well, but I don’t work as much with them.
    I wish we had better access and integration of a psychologist and social worker with our program. So many people need so much help in those areas, and it’s so hard to help someone manage their blood sugars when their mental health or their socioeconomic status are the bigger concern.
    I have learned so much about myself and my diabetes from working in this clinic. I truly feel I was meant to be where I am. I unfortunately have retinopathy and just underwent a vitrectomy to fix a detaching retina. Thankfully all went well and my vision is perfect. Diabetes is hard and many ppl just don’t understand how every little thing can affect your blood sugar. Stress, being super excited, having a cold, a crappy sleep, a 10 minute walk, etc. All those things can make blood sugar go high, or drop low and it’s tough to deal with some days. But if people utilize clinics like this and tap in to the resources that are there for them, they can get a lot of support and people with diabetes need support whether you admit it or not!
    Great video, take care and Merry Christmas and all the best in 2020!!

    Accidentally found u a couple of days ago and really glad I did. In the 80's I finished first year MS and discovered I was unhappy. Quit and clept into a nursing program. Retired this year after 33 years and do not regret my choice. I'm very much hands on and people centered. Loved my time with my patients. So good to see this next generation as they move along into their learning. Ur amazing and I'm certain u will have a fulfilling and exciting career. Back to watching ur videos. Oh and whoever does ur editing is doing a great job.

      You can develop type 1 diabetes as an adult but it tends to be misdiagnosed as type 2. My friend, Aunt, and my cousin were all misdiagnosed with type 2.

    • @dogcrazy25
      @dogcrazy25 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Please read Dr Jason Fung, the Diabetes Code and the Obesity Code books. You can stop you disease from progressing. I did not know any better so I became a type 2 diabetic. Educate yourself now and not through this sweet, although misinformed doc on type 2.

    • @Ron_the_Skeptic
      @Ron_the_Skeptic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Do your own research. Almost everything you have been told about diet is wrong. Obesity is a side effect, not the cause. Every time you eat a carbohydrate your blood sugar increases, then insulin is released to control the sugar, and the excess sugar is stored as fat. The frequency of this process can cause insulin resistance resulting in Type II diabetes. You can eliminate carbohydrates from your diet and that will resolve the need to control Type II diabetes and pre-diabetes caused by insulin resistance.

But I am trying my best to have a good a1c. After my first semester of college, I got real bad DKA, went into a coma for a week plus, and had kidney failure that turned into dialysis as well as a bacterial infection. I almost died. Great video. I love your approach to type 1 diabetes and how you do a consult. I've had type 1 since the age of 3 (dx in 1979) and have seen Al advances in technology. Currently using a Medtronic 640G insulin pump and a Libre sensor. A1C is 5,6%. Unfortunately I have got some complications from the days control wasn't that good. I love to see medical students and residents approach a disease like diabetes differently than it used to by doctors and nurses. And people in general. That really helps. Thank you for sharing. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and the ones you love from the Netherlands. Frederike.

    I have type 1 diabetes and hypothyroidism. When I was first diagnosed with diabetes when I was 12 (I'm now 30) it was super hard to get a handle of! Now it's much less of an issue. I haven't had an A1c above 7 in about 10 years and compete in weightlifting. Really cool seeing the doctor side of endocrinology!

    Could you do a follow-up video to this talking more in detail about diabetic symptoms and what people who don't have diabetes should know for the sake of helping other people? I have a handful of friends who have diabetes and obviously they know how to deal with it themselves but I'd like to know more about what I can/should do in case something bad happens

      Purple Fire 28 the best thing you can do is ask your friends what they would like you to do in a situation where they may need help. But generally, if a diabetic is having a low blood sugar, that is a situation that could turn very serious very quickly, so it is important to treat it right away. Signs may include a person feeling shaky or tingly. They could have a really bad headache or feel really hungry all of the sudden. If they seem confused or almost like they are drunk, they could be having a low. A low needs to be treated with fast acting sugar. Many diabetics carry Dex 4 sugar tablets with them, but not all do so something like juice or regular pop or sugar cubes would work too. Again it’s best to check with your friends and ask them what they would want you to know about their diabetes and how they might want you to help 🙂

      It depends on if your friends are Type 1 or Type 2 diabetics. Type 1 are more likely to suffer from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) when they are sick/ill or simply not managing their diabetes properly, or if they run out of insulin to give themselves. Type 2 have less trouble with these type of things, usually, but when there's a complication it's often due to dehydration. In any case, say one of your friends is having an episode of hypoglycemia. The signs to look for would be: they are behaving sort of like a drunk person (confused, emotionally unstable, dizzy, unable to walk straight), and they will often exhibit signs that are similar to a person going into shock (cold/clammy skin, breathing fast, heart rate through the roof).
      In these instances they should consume something high carb that will work quickly to bring their blood sugar back up. It's best to pair the high carb snack with some protein (if I remember correctly from nursing school). So, you can give them some fruit juice or a piece of candy with some deli meat or other protein on hand. I think crackers and peanut butter is also acceptable. I just remember learning that you shouldn't give them a ton of carbs because it could cause the opposite problem, and switch their hypoglycemia to hyperglycemia.

      One of the simplest things you can do is realise that a low blood sugar needs glucose and a high needs insulin. That often gets confused! If your friend is acting drunk or out of character, it can be a hypo! I’d gone shopping one day and a man was unsteady on his feet, slurring his words and asking for coke. The staff were trying to understand and eventually he couldn’t talk at all anymore. It took one quick look at his arm and I got them to grab him sugar ASAP and call an ambulance. They just thought he was a homeless drunk 💔 but I can see how they came to that conclusion. He was okay, but was so embarrassed the poor guy.

      He was wearing a continuous glucose monitor, I re read that and realised I hadn’t explained lol! Hypers ( too high ) can make us thirsty, cranky and super tired. It feels really yuck!
