As a 1000cc sport bike owner, i still found the CBR500R one of the most fun bikes i've ridden in a long time. No, you won't break any sound barriers. But for "city streets" and "twistie roads" riding, this is more fun then it should be😊👍🏼💖

When I ran my CBR500R as a commuter, I was quite surprised how fun it was on the local B roads Vs my 08R1. The suspension was really compliant, despite it not having any damping adjustment. I traded that in for a Fazer 1000 five years ago and I kinda regret it. There's nothing quite like ringing the neck on a small capacity bike and pinning it everywhere. I do miss the 65mpg I was getting on it on the motorways.

@@Sidowse Needs must... The M5 & M32 into Bristol is a ballache at the best of times and its modes performance stopped me from othe impromptu top gear roll ons to ease the boredom. To be honest with you, it hid its weight pretty well. I'd put it similar to a 33bhp'd SV650 back in the day.

Got a 2022 Honda Monkey in March 2022. I was looking at the Honda CB300R Neo Sports Cafe, which seems to be available everywhere except the UK so far. Only problem is, Honda and Mark (with these reviews) keep knocking out amazing midsized motorcycles like this. As a Honda car driver of over 30 years, this is the only brand I can feel at home with, 4 or 2 wheels. Thanks again for the comprehensive no nonsense does exactly what it says on the tin reviews

I have the 2014 model, which has single brake disc up front and a 15.7 litre tank instead of the 17 litres on the latest. I bought it in 2015 and I still love it. Great all round package.

Good review Mark. I’ve had 2 of these (2018 & 2020) and buy one every time there is an upgrade. Showa forks and twin discs have me sold again! I can’t beat this as an all round bike.

Nice review Mark. I love the 500 range. Going to get a CB500F as I prefer it over the CBR but they are all so good and that engine combined with the new brakes and suspension is a great mix. They have really done well 👍🏻

Thanks for the review Mark. I’ve just bought a 2021 model for a fantastic price. They are a great do it all bike. Not sure I’d swap the 21 model for the 22 model as essentially there isn’t a great deal of difference to warrant changing. I had a 19 plate 500x and got 102mpg on ride once. Experienced riders should also consider these, especially if you want a commuter bike that can also handle longer distances and country road riding. 👍

Nice review. I have owned this model since Christmas. I am 6'4 with long legs and can ride it all day in comfort. The screen does a great job. Fuel economy is outstanding even when ridden hard. I've come from 30 years riding bigger bikes and it's great fun to ride hard, especially through the bends, without worrying about going to prison! I do miss the IL4 sound of my other bikes but a Scorpion exhaust does help somewhat. You can poodle about or rag it depending on your mood. I've just done a long weekend in Dorset with an SW Motech pro tank bag. There is an an excellent Facebook group.

I had a 2019 model as my 4th bike and did 15,500 km on it in two seasons before trading for its sister, the CB500X, so I could do some off-road. Absolutely love the powertrain on these, perfect amount of power for the roads, extremely good fuel economy (2.5 to 3.5 L/100km), low insurance cost, and reliable as the moon. I'm glad they replaced the Dunlops with Michellin Roads as they were really not good. Very easy to ride bikes and live with for daily commuting, light touring, or fun in the back roads with 500 km fuel range.
I might even get another one to complement the 500X and modify the X for more off-road capability (at the expense of on-road fun). I'm not sure which of the two I prefer still... the 500R definitely felt quicker and got slightly better fuel economy, and less vibrations. I also found the seat more comfortable -- it's firmer on the R but the X lets you sink in a bit and puts pressure elsewhere that gets uncomfortable. But the X has the ground clearance, tires, and riding position to allow for better off-road dynamics. The one thing the 500R needed for me was the Puig windscreen -- the stock was pushing air straight into my helmet and was unbearably loud.

@@markpulling12 I suspect it's down to aerodynamics. I also surprisingly think the ride of the R was more compliant than my X, even with the updated suspension. Rumour has it Honda will introduce both scrambler and a dual-sport-ish models with the 500 twin powerplant. 😎

Perhaps the cheapest bike on offer that I would rate as all-day-on-the-freeway comfortable. Have a 2016 CBR500R. Slapped a top case on it, went +1 -3 on the gears and it has been a very good 'minimalist' sport tourer for me. Done several multi hundred mile days. Good ergos, smooth ride, respectable tank range, reliable. Power is merely adequate, but that's the trade-off. Since it's not huge it also works great as an around town commuter/errand bike.

Great video Mark many thanks. Interestingly Visor down have just put this as their no1 in the top 10 budget sports bike. It has to be the best all rpunder in that catagory, maybe the ktm rc390 for out and out fun but nowhere near the reliability and value overall of the Honda. What are your views on the 390?

Hi Mike I have a 390 duke as a fun run about no issues with it but it is quite new ....but tbh the cbr500 is just as much fun but you get the benchmark reliability...I just wanted to tick the box with the 390 duke but I think long term reliability you'd be better off with the Honda

How is the gearing spaced on this bike compared to the 500x? As an owner of the 500x, I find 1st gear to be extremely short while the rest are normally spaced and that compromises off the line speed.

This bike looks amazing but would this be a good first bike for a 30yo guy with 10 years of car driving experience who has no interest in being a hooligan? Or should I go for the sv650 which is also about 500€ cheaper?

I know compromise have to be made at this price point but ditching the previous adjustable forks from the previous model is a huge step in the wrong direction for me. Especially considering how highly Dave Moss talked about the 2017 model. A shame really.

This is the market's median motorbike. This is where all the spec's intersect. Not too big, not too small. Attractive not in your face or aged and bland. Clean and realistic performance. Sensible tech. And so on.
X and F are nice but the market is still a sportsbike centred

Truly can't decide between this and the ninja 400. It's better looking and a more comfortable commuter. But although I never plan to track my bike, the ninja's incredibly light weight, handling and high redline are almost too much to resist.

Can anyone confirm if the new 2022 CBR 500r is running 15T/41T sprockets w/a 520 chain like the honda website says in the specs, or is it using 15T/44T with a 525 chain like they list in the downloadable pdf brochure (also on the website). This would be a meaningful upgrade if IMHO if it is true......
