RIDING THE METROCABLE IN MEDELLÍN, COLOMBIA | Eileen Aldis

Among other things, Medellín is known for its incredible Metrocable, an extensive network of gondola cars that stretch up into the surrounding mountains. In the past, Medellín was called the most dangerous city in the world. If you lived in the neighbourhoods further away from the centre, it was difficult to get into the city for important things like work, school, and food. The Metrocable improves accessibility and has been a huge factor in transforming the city. We decided to ride it ourselves and - WOW - it's an incredible way to get a bird's eye view of the sprawling city. It's public transit as well so the cost is low. I made friends with someone in the same car and we chatted about Colombia and how he takes the Metrocable to his university each day. Marc and I got out at Santo Domingo and transferred to the second Metrocable line which goes so high up we could see the clouds beneath us! It takes you across the top of the mountain and lets you off at Parque Arví, an ecological nature reserve full of gorgeous trees. There are nature trails, archaeological sites, and a market where we ate delicious empanadas and tried Colombian fruit from a woman who grows it in her garden. The uchuva is my new favourite! I loved experiencing the Metrocable and definitely recommend riding it if you're in Medellín.

In other places in the world, they use maglevs, high speed rail, subways, monorails, etc. But it seems like cable cars can be just as effective, especially when elevation varies a lot.

I just when there in April, so sorry that be int here did not go to the farms that cultivate flowers Medellin has a very big tradicion on flowers and in the farms yoy can see all the kinds of them and see how and what the locals do whit it

I've ridden gondolas here locally in El Paso, in Albuquerque and I want to ride the one in Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre), Chihuahua. I hear that one is spectacular. Medellin looks awesome.

Incredible views from the Metrocable. sadly my only experience with cable is at Scarborough in England which was a ski lift that took you from one side of a park to the other and was not very exciting.
Thanks for this helpful video. I'll be going to Medellin for my 1st time in a few weeks and plan to use the Metro. If my 1st station will be Poblado or Aguacatala (since that's where my hotel is), can I still get a Civica card? Also, do you know if I take the Metro up to Parque Arvi which requires paying again at the station halfway up, do I use the same card? I understand that the fare however for this last part up to the top is much higher so I guess I need to make sure I have enough on a card for a round trip.

I won't have enough time to go outside of Medellin on this trip since it's only one stop out of a few I'm doing on this trip (Little Cayman, Cusco, Lima and Panama City are other stops). If I like what I see in Colombia, I'll make a return trip to do Guatape next time and I also have sights on Malpelo Island too.

first you have to take the metro line, it cost less than a dollar, then you take the fist part of the metro cable that is free, and then yo most to pay more o less 2 dollars

I was in one of the scariest ones in Zhangjiajie, China, recently and that one went on forever. I was so high about the ground, it was kinda scary.
Hi! That sounds cool! I was in China two summers ago and rode a lift up to the Mutianyu section of the wall. I didn't find this one in Medellín scary but if someone had a serious fear of heights it'd be a different story! I was just happy I didn't have to walk the whole way uphill haha ;)

Wow, that Metro Cable looks great! I wish we could have one in my city (Mexico City) but I think it could only work in very specific geographical conditions (or topographical, I don't know) like in Medellín.

Nice video, Eileen. How much time would you recommend allocating for the kind of trip to Arvi that you showed here? Whole day? Half-day?
Glad you enjoyed it! You don't need a whole day, depending on how much time you'd like to spend looking around at the top. A half day or less, if you're short on time, would be fine, I think.
what has been your experience been with eating food from street vendors? my travel clinic told me to stay away from them. even the fruit stands.
I didn't have any issues and ate from a lot of street vendors, fruit stands, and juice stands. Of course it can happen though. I'd say to opt for places that have a lot of patrons. Anywhere that looks busy and popular is a good bet. Some of the best and most traditional food is found from street vendors, though, so I think it's worth trying.

Eileen you can order Bandeja Paisa in everywhere in Colombia because it is a nacional plate but be carefull cos normaly is HUGE I mean it is a lot of food!

That's possible but, to my eyes, these clouds didn't appear to be pollution.
