COLOMBIA BUS TRIP: MEDELLIN TO SALENTO | Eileen Aldis

- In today's travel day vlog we take a bus from the large Colombian city of Medellín to Salento, a small town in the heart of coffee-growing country. We were told the journey would take somewhere between six and nine hours, depending on traffic and road closures. It was a huge, comfortable bus with a bathroom, air conditioning, and reclining seats - score! We were lucky it wasn't very full so we could really spread out. My favourite part was when different vendors boarded the bus at various times to offer food and drinks. That's how I got lucky enough to eat THE BEST arepa I've ever had in my life! It was still warm and the man said they'd just come out of the hot oven in his home. Absolute bliss! Too bad I had to share with Marc ;) I admit I was a little unsure about how I'd feel after a whole day on a bus on the winding roads through the Andes mountains but it was the best decision! I truly didn't feel the time and spent the entire bus ride with my headphones on, looking out the window at the beautiful scenery, wondering how I was so lucky to be there. Given the choice, I would recommend driving from Medellín to Salento because it's gorgeous and provides a great opportunity to see rural Colombia and get a taste for the vastness of the Andes. After eight hours, our bus let us off at the terminal in Armenia where we boarded a smaller bus that took us all the way to Salento (about an hour's drive more) down the winding hills into the valley. When we arrived we got let off on the side of the road and couldn't see many cars or people, let alone taxis. I'd been told that the taxis in Salentos are all Jeeps so we kept our eyes peeled while we mentally calculated how long it'd take to walk. We were really lucky that a girl walked by and asked if she could help us. We said we were looking for a taxi and she said she hadn't seen many but wished us the best. Less than five minutes later I saw a Jeep driving towards us and jumped out into the road to flag it down, flapping my arms. Turns out, I didn't need to! The Jeep stopped and guess who jumped out the back? The girl we'd just met! She'd seen a taxi down the road and got in to show the driver where we were. We were so thankful for her help and overwhelmed, as one often is, at the absolute kindness of strangers. We loaded our things into the Jeep, which was no ordinary Jeep - it was the coolest Jeep I'd ever seen. Our driver told us it was a 1950's 'Willy's' - in mint condition. WOW. We drove about fifteen minutes out of town to our hostel where we were grateful to check in and get to sleep after a long day of travel. I can't wait to explore Salento more and hope you enjoy this road trip as much as we did!

favorite bus trips for me where when i was a little kid, used to take bus trips with my grandma from Cd. Juarez Chihuahua to Parral chihuahua, about a 9 hour bus ride back then, we used to leave at night and wake up at our destination hehe to me as a little kid this was magical, go to sleep in one city wake up in another :-)
That's such a lovely memory, especially to have with your grandma. That would definitely be magical to wake up in a new city - it kind of still is! ;) I really enjoyed all the bus travel we did in Mexico. Such comfy buses and amazing to get a bag of food and a drink for the journey!

Hey Sara! haha I thought the bus ride would seem a lot longer but it really didn't! I was amazed at how fast the time flew by :) That was an arepa! It was DELICIOUS - the best one I had in Colombia. It was still warm from the oven when that man came aboard the bus to sell them. The coffee countryside was GORGEOUS and I can't wait to share the videos! We visited a coffee plantation, too, which was one of my favourite days of the entire trip :)

Beautiful country side for sure; too bad it's difficult to build freeways in the area. I travelled the area with my wife who is from Colombia, many times and I loved every time, but it is hard to stay awake because of the curvy hiways...

During a bus trip like this one, do you put your backpack in the cargo space or take the backpack with you in the bus?

Question about the bus ride from Medellín to Salento... Ive heard that the roads are very winding, should I bring Dramamine or do you think the trip by bus will be fine without it?
I didn't take any but I don't generally have an issue with that whereas Marc does. He didn't take any either and was ok but everyone is different. It's hard to say so I'd recommend bringing it in case you start to feel ill - good back up!

based on your experience is Colombia very similar to Mexico and if not what makes it unique and if so what do they both share in common?
Hi! I spent a lot more time in Mexico than in Colombia but there are similarities and differences. I’d say both produce wonderful coffee and yummy fruits and have very different but delicious foods. I’d say the tourism industry in Mexico is more established and is still growing in Colombia. We spent time in the more arid, desert-like climates in Mexico and more time in lush, mountainous areas in Colombia. The beaches we visited in both countries were gorgeous and not to be missed. The Spanish sounded different to me in each country but I’m not the best judge of the nuances!

Hello! No, unfortunately, we didn't have time to visit Bogotá. But the gold museum, graffiti, and nearby salt cathedral all looked really interesting. I'm sure there's a lot to see!
