I like the Elric books because reading them you can't stop but go "holy sh, that's where warhammer got this from, that's where this comes from in the witcher series, this is where grrm got that idea from" etc but at the same time, Elric is such an emo dramaqueen. My man throws himself to the floor crying at one point because the book he wanted got destroyed. His cousin steals his throne, kidnaps his cousin wife to make her his sister wife. And what does he do, after he defeats his cousin and marries the love of his life, his cousin wife? He goes "ok cuz, you take the throne for a bit while I go travel the world. Will be back in like a year or sum, ight babe?" And his cousin goes "Bet, definitely won't try to take the throne again and rizz up my baby sis, cuz. Fr, fr, ong" (idk why they talk like gen alpha) "My sword is so evil and edgy, it feeds on the souls of my enemies and makes me stronger! .. But I don't want to use it to save the little kid I really want to save from this horrible slaver that tricked me into doing his bidding :(" Dude legit acts like a moody emo teen in almost every story. One moment he's a stoic bro, the other he's a slobbering mess. One moment he's the heroic guy trying to prove that his people can change. The other he's cold and disinterested, too good for the hot girl that is clearly crushing on him and wants to continue adventuring with him.
I agree with all of this! It's surprising when reading through the Elric Saga to see just how influential it was to fantasy. Even certain scenes/scenarios I feel like I've seen adapted into other works. But yes, Elric is definitely an emo drama queen 😂 I feel like the quality is pretty inconsistent, and that's likely a lot to do with these not originally being novels and rather a collection of stories, but even the character of Elric can be sort of inconsistent. He makes some very questionable choices, I was also like "what the hell dude??" when he just leaves his 'cousin wife' to take over the throne while he travels the world and just expects that Yrkoon won't do anything about it lol. Overall the Elric Saga is a hit or miss, some stories I feel like aged very well but then others are not so good. Moorcock has described himself as a man with a great imagination, but a mediocre storyteller and I think to some degree that is true. I do really enjoy that 70's pulp fiction filled with imagination and not over-worried about what sells and what doesn't, but a lot of pulp suffers when it comes to plot structure and character arcs, and I believe we see that here.
Elric is always better when described by somone else. I had read about Elric and the books. The first one I liked ok, but the Fortress of the Pearl and The sailor of the seas of fate are bad. Sailor has at least some ok battle sequences and hints at the eternal champion thing, but Fortress is definitely one of the worst fantasy books I have ever read. But when you explain or tell about Elric to someone he sounds like this cool hero with a dark side.
There's a moment in the first book that made me almost laugh. Him and rackhir are on there way to stop yrkoon from getting stormbringer so they arrive at some owl shaped temple or some shi. As they're walking through the path way there some magical mud shi on the side that elric falls Into, the mud reaches his knees....... Not his hip...... not his chest... not his neck. Just the knees He tells rackhir to leave him to die and it's over, just for rackhir to pull his straight out of it. This guy really just gave on life because there was some mud, I stopped and laughed a Lil bit at that.
The Sword of Light, Gorun Nova, from the Slayers series has been a longtime favorite of mine; accept no substitutes. Its reveal in the anime was one of the best moments in an amazing series. Honorable mention to Lina's Ragna Blade spell, which, while not a weapon per se, is one of the deadliest attacks in the setting. I always liked the look of the Demon Sword Soul Crusher from Record of Lodoss War OVA as well, and the way it was spoke of just made it seem supremely wicked.
Lilarcor from Baldur's Gate 2 is such a favorite of mine, a giant sentient sword that just wants to kill things. To this day I still quote his "*murder death kill! murder death kill!*" voice line to my friends. Its a shame it never ended up in Baldur's Gate 3.
There’s too many but if I had to pick two it’s the sword of Omens from Thundercats. One of the coolest designs and a weapon made for a king. Also “sight beyond sight” is such a cool ability. Another runner up is Jet’s hook swords from Last Airbender. Hook swords are so cool in how unique they are and how they can be utilized by grappling and cutting.
Full WaT spoilers(I don't think there are spoiler tags, so I'll do the ol' make a bunch of lines so you have to hit "see more" trick) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I love that Nightblood views himself as a sword of light in the cognitive realm! I also love that Nightblood is growing as a character! He actually tries to stop eating Kal and Szeth at the end, and how he's being influenced positively by the honor blades.
The sword of shannara because it possesses magic but its magic can only show you a truth & elf stones that can do almost anything.Do a video on magical items or armor.
I have reached that point of the video now 😂 I had expected it at the beginning, when the video was on the topic of stormbringer and swords inspired by it, so I decided to comment, before I forget it. My intention was deleting the comment if Dragnipur is mentioned later 😅 But yes, it is such a cool sword, it's description, and the description of the wagon in Gardens of the moon was so amazing! I haven't read the other malazan books yet, but I'll get to them eventually.
Such a great list. Dont know if it fully counts but For me my favorite weapon will always be the keyblades from kingdom hearts. No matter how impractical they actually are. There's just something I love about smacking someone with a big key.
It's Terminus Est, not tempest. Terminus being the latin root for words like terminate, which is perfectly fitting for an executioner's sword. I'd also like to shout out the Azoth from Gene Wolfe's science fantasy Book of the Long Sun. It's similar to a lightsaber in that it's a sword hilt that projects an energy beam. However, the blade extends indefinitely, which is kind of hilarious, and is invisible. It cuts things from reality itself, but can't cut through steel, so a regular sword can parry it. Immensely powerful, but also incredibly impractical.
Awesome choices! I never see anyone talk about the Night Angel trilogy, but that was actually one of the main series that got me into reading fantasy more in middle/high school
Excellent additions! I thought about adding in a weapon from WH40K but I'm not too familiar with that universe yet, as I've only just started getting into some of the video games, so I'm glad to see you mentioned a few! Now I want to go and read up on the lore about these haha!
SIlmarillion wasn't published until 73, so unless Moorcock had access to Tolkien's archives I think Storm Bringer has the honor being unrelated - unless through shared mythology.
One of my faves is the twin blades from Sistah Samurai. Purely for their names, Fuck Around and Find Out. Yes i am that basic Also too many to name and hard to pick just one but there's so many in Bleach I could pick
I liked the video. You did, however, say one incorrect thing. Callendor can be wielded by any male channeler; once the Dragon Reborn grabbed the sword from the Stone of Tear. This was Be'lal' plan. After Rand took the sword, he believed he would take it from Rand. Also, we see it weided in a circle at the Cleansing of the Taint and Moridin starts to use it at the Last Battle.
I know it’s too unknown and the series gets a lot of crap but Retribution (Iures) and the Black Ka’kari from Night Angel are two great items one sentient and one with purpose. Also, the most legendary weapon in all of fantasy was overlooked: +1 Magic Sword from DnD 🤭
Excalibur should probably be on this list, for all swords seem to be compared to it. And from GOT, I liked Needle, just because. There is also the titular Sword of Truth, from one of the greatest fantasy series ever. And I'm surprised that you left off Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn. (I could probably go on, but' nuff said for now. (Did I just hear Mjölnir ring on a certain shield just then?)
I was thinking of adding Excalibur but cut it to save time since it was an obvious one, however, I can't believe I completely forgot to add in Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn! I actually wrote out a segment for that but then forgot to do the voiceover 😅my bad! The Sword of Truth is a great choice as well
The only way I will accept a Warcarft movie is if it's done in the style of their cinematics. Because they tried to make a Warcraft movie 10 years ago and it was just kind of okay. The Humans looked out of place next to the CGI Orcs.
I agree! Didn't care much for the Warcraft movie, but it wasn't terrible. Live action just looks weird with all the CGI, so I agree, if we got a movie in the style of the cinematics I think that would be incredible!

What are your favorite weapons from fantasy? Let me know! EDIT: I can't believe I forgot Memory Sorrow and Thorn
Bilbo/Frodo's sword deserved a shout out while you were discussing Aragon's sword.
Ahhh so true! Can't believe I forgot to mention Sting
Comparing Nightblood to a toddler with god-like powers is a perfect 😂. Exactly how that sword feels every time we see it throughout the Cosmere
Yesss thank you for including Frostmourne, most iconic sword
I like the Elric books because reading them you can't stop but go "holy sh, that's where warhammer got this from, that's where this comes from in the witcher series, this is where grrm got that idea from" etc but at the same time, Elric is such an emo dramaqueen. Really like this topic! Thank you for the video!
The Blinding Knife from Brent Weeks' Lightbringer series is another one!
Yesss that's a good one!!

Dude, your scripting in this video was top form
Much appreciated!!
I love me some juicy fantasy weapons! It really can make or break the action depending on how that is handled in a story
Love it when u added king killer chronicles caesura n folly in it
How fast can you click on a video ....me : yes
Great topic! 👏
An interesting video 🎥🎥🎥 I like special weapon’s in book too. Happy reading!! 😊
I always think of the Buster Sword from Final Fantasy 7
Amoracchius in the Dresden Files
Solid picks all around. I'd add the Blades of Chaos from God of War, the Moonlight Greatsword from the Souls series, and Sokka's boomerang from ATLA
Always love a good fantasy weapon!
Me too! ⚔️
Gotta love the EPIC weapons or artefacts of great power trope, it's definitely one of my favourites.

I'd really like to have the light saber but jeez I got a young bro ready to steal it away. 😂
Wind and Truth audiobook. Michael Kramer. The first time Nightblood speaks. I am still laughing 60 hours later.
OoooOOOoooh will there be snacks?

That was an awesome ad
Thanks!! Really happy to finally have a saber haha
I'm a big fan of The Subtle Knife, even if IIRC it was never used in battle. A knife that can cut through to other dimensions!
Very cool concept for a video. Nice.
The sword of shannara because it possesses magic but its magic can only show you a truth & elf stones that can do almost anything.Do a video on magical items or armor.
Loved the elf stones!!!
Fantasy weapons are a major part of why we read fantasy!
Was 30 minutes in, and every time you mentioned a new weapon i thought "Please tell me hes going to say Dragnipur in this video."
Haha well don't worry I mention Dragnipur at 35:12 It's probably my #1 favorite sword
Must add Need from Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series. This sentient sword was first introduced in The Oathbound that was published in 1988.
Great vid! Idk if I’m happy or sad kvothe hasn’t gotten a ton of Caesura or Folly action, I hope for his sanity.
With Stormbringer as a Starting Point, Dragnipur from Malazan deserves to be mentioned, I think.
I mention it in the video 😉 Dragnipur is probably actually my favorite sword in all of fantasy
I have reached that point of the video now 😂
I had expected it at the beginning, when the video was on the topic of stormbringer and swords inspired by it, so I decided to comment, before I forget it. My intention was deleting the comment if Dragnipur is mentioned later 😅
But yes, it is such a cool sword, it's description, and the description of the wagon in Gardens of the moon was so amazing!
I haven't read the other malazan books yet, but I'll get to them eventually.
Oh haha no worries! Yesss I love the description of the wagon too, such a unique concept!
Some for another video
Zar'roc & Brisingr from The Inheritance Cycle
Excalibur
The One Ring
The Sword of Gryffindor
Mjolnir
Excellent choices!!
Speaking of Guen, you should do an animal companions list.
Ooo I love that idea!
Stormbringer first sounds about right.
Such a great list. Dont know if it fully counts but For me my favorite weapon will always be the keyblades from kingdom hearts. No matter how impractical they actually are. There's just something I love about smacking someone with a big key.
Dude, Kingdom Hearts is awesome! I've been meaning to replay them again as it's been years. Keyblades definitely count!
I’m such a sucker for sentient weapons 😂
Same here!!!
Good list! You obviously can’t get them all in just 25. One I think worth mentioning is the Elfstones of Shannara.
Can someone tell me what are the books on the right, blue and orange one, appear to be some kind of leatherbound?
Those are the deluxe editions for Fate of Wizardoms by Jeffrey L. Kohanek, it's a great indie series and these editions are beautiful :)
@CapturedInWords Thank you very much! They look really great!
Need from the Valdemar books by Mercedes Lackey comes immediately to mind for me ^^
It's Terminus Est, not tempest. Terminus being the latin root for words like terminate, which is perfectly fitting for an executioner's sword. Immensely powerful, but also incredibly impractical.
Terminus Est is a good mention. Definitely purpose built in a very interesting way.
Also love the Agiel!!!!!
I would have added Retribution or Lures (The Staff of Law) and Curoch (The Sword of Power) the from Brent Weeks' Night Angel trilogy.
Awesome choices! I never see anyone talk about the Night Angel trilogy, but that was actually one of the main series that got me into reading fantasy more in middle/high school
If you did a SciFi one. Razors from Red Rising
The sickle shaped razor...
BIG ASS SWORD
coolest armours next?
If I don't see any Red Rising armor in it imma crash out
Personal favorite is Snaga the Sender from the Drenai saga.
What are the books, that look similar to your Dragonsteel Books in the background?
Those are the deluxe editions for a indie series called The Fate of Wizardoms by Jeffrey L. Kohanek :)
Was gonna have serious problems if Dragnipur wasn’t on this. I think Kratos blades of chaos and leviathan axe are worthy as well.
From the Witcher, my favorite is Olgierd’s sword Iris
A few other iconic swords:
- Sting (LotR)
- Virtuous Contract, Virtuous Treaty - 2B (Nier Automata)
- The Sword of Actuation - Skull Knight (Berserk)
- The Emperor's Sword - The Emperor of Mankind, Roboute Guilliman (WH40K)
- The Laer Blade - Fulgrim (WH40K)
- Drach'nyen - Abaddon (WH40K)
Excellent additions! I thought about adding in a weapon from WH40K but I'm not too familiar with that universe yet, as I've only just started getting into some of the video games, so I'm glad to see you mentioned a few! Now I want to go and read up on the lore about these haha!
I'm always going to rep Riptide/Anaklusmos from Percy Jackson.
Twinkle has gotten an upgrade in the more recent books.
Interesting! I've been meaning to get to some of the newer Drizzt books, but I think I might just do a fresh read through soon as it's been a while
If Dragnipur isn’t on here I’m gonna riot
Don't worry, no rioting required ;)
All sentient swords are inspired by gurthang in Tolkien’s The children of hurin
And the Kalevala
SIlmarillion wasn't published until 73, so unless Moorcock had access to Tolkien's archives I think Storm Bringer has the honor being unrelated - unless through shared mythology.
One of my faves is the twin blades from Sistah Samurai. Purely for their names, Fuck Around and Find Out. Yes i am that basic

The Dragonlance.
Oooo that's a good one!

After Rand took the sword, he believed he would take it from Rand. Also, we see it weided in a circle at the Cleansing of the Taint and Moridin starts to use it at the Last Battle.
Ahhh you're totally right, my bad! Forgot about that
OSRS MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND!!!!
YESSS! LOVE OSRS
I personally really like Mah'alleinir from Wheel of Time
I know it’s too unknown and the series gets a lot of crap but Retribution (Iures) and the Black Ka’kari from Night Angel are two great items one sentient and one with purpose.
Also, the most legendary weapon in all of fantasy was overlooked: +1 Magic Sword from DnD 🤭
Anakulomos from Percy Jackson ❤
The Boomstick
Sword of the Lady!
S.M Stirlings The Change series
This video tells me that magical Polearms are severely missing from fantasy and literature.
True!
The best weapon is obviously Syl
The words Kaladin!!
Yeah no competition
I believe you mean Maya
The nuke was a fantasy weapon. Until it wasn’t…
Excalibur should probably be on this list, for all swords seem to be compared to it. And from GOT, I liked Needle, just because. Gullwhacker from the Redwall series 😬
Akaeme's sword from akame ga kill
Good one!!
Early squad?
🙌
Callandor
I'm here for the Nightblood fans
