    Just to confirm. 60g of carbs in a one litre bottle = 6% = Isotonic mix. And if I heard correctly, an isotonic drink mix won't hydrate you? Great video. Just bought the ingredients.

    • @WillGirling
      @WillGirling  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct that would be a 6% solution and isotonic would hydrate you just not as well as a 3/4% solution.

    Great video Will, short, sweet, packed with useful info and to the point. I have been making my own stuff to the quantities you prescribe for a season now and pretty much stopped using gels. I have not been adding salt though (I will start). I use citric acid, lemon juice flavour essentially, in crystaline form to give it flavour which works well. Mixing is made easy using a blender/juicer thingy.

    • @WillGirling
      @WillGirling  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey David, that would be 1g per bidon - a typical electrolyte tab is around 400-500mg Sodium. 1g salt is 400mg sodium. You can of course buy a bag of electrolyte which is significantly cheaper than the effervescent tabs

    Hi Will, so if i understand the quantities are measure from the fructose, meaning hypotonic 3-5 g per mil using 1 g of salt or electrolytes per bottle and double the amount of fructose for the maltodextrin, so for a 550 ml bottle (16.5 to 27.5 of fructose, 33 to 55 grams of maltodextrin and 1 g of sodium) the same formula for the isotonic and the hypertonic but adjusting the quantities of carb and maltodextrin according to ml content, im right?

  • @lauig
    @lauig 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey Will stumbled upon your channel thanks to Francis, great content ! I subscribed instantly :)
    A little question on this one though : Shouldn't a good energy drink add at least a bit of potassium ?
    If my understanding is correct, sweat doesn't have much Ca and Mag per Liter, so one doesn't lose much when exercising and therefore you don't need to complexify your drink with those, but potassium amounts seems significant enough.
    Maybe cut a third or half of the water in the mix to replace it with coconut water or something similar ? What would you recommend ?

    • @WillGirling
      @WillGirling  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah so if you buy commercial electrolyte - link in the description - then it would have potassium in too but just salt is a solid choice too if you're in a pinch. The main electrolyte lost is Sodium and you could get potassium from a banana if you wanted... or yeah use coconut water if you wanted... though a bit pricier.

    Thanks for this! Any tips on flavouring? I guess that it's just like sweet water. Although I'm wondering if that is a good thing, I can really get tired of the flavoured things into a ride.
    Edit: I can see that bulkpowders has a dextrose/maltodextrin blend that's flavoured. Any difference in using that vs. only maltodextrin?

    • @WillGirling
      @WillGirling  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah it's pretty neautral tasting with lower %s being more so and higher ones being a just a little sweet. Can use sugar free cordial to help flavour if you want.
      Dextrose and maltodextrin are one and the same - so not sure why that's a thing but can defintiely opt for it if you want

    Hi Will, loving your content. I've been making my own "gu" for a while in a similar fashion, but might switch to drink mixtures. Here's a question i've been unable to find an answer to:
    What's the difference in how the body will process hypo/iso/hypertonic drinks? Let's say between a 60g Maltodextrin and 30g Fructose in 770ml water (isotonic) and 30g Maltodextrin and 60g Sugar in the same 770ml water (hypertonic)? Both have the same quantity of water, glucose, and fructose.
    I suspect the answer is that the hypertonic mix will reduce your water reserves 470ml to make up for that missing water (which depending on the heat and event duration could be problematic), but let's say you drink another half bottle to compensate - where does this water go?
    I think two bottles is the ideal method - one isotonic carbs and the other just salt+water (drink the isotonic one at a constant rate, the salty one to make up for water loss), and that there is no good reason to even think about using sugar rather than malto+fructose, but I feel like I'm missing a piece of information here. Maybe make a video about the details of hydration?

    • @WillGirling
      @WillGirling  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jeffery! Thanks for reaching out!
      In the first question both of those are exactly the same the latter is not hypertonic as it's the same % concentration per 100ml so would be the same and sugar works just as well for that situation but consideration of your teeth should be there.
      But if it were hypertonic then it can take a little longer to absorb is all and if contiued for long durations may cause GID distress

    • @jeffreythompson6282
      @jeffreythompson6282 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WillGirling how about the impact to body hydration? I thought isotonic was essentially neutral (not hydrating or making you more thirsty), or did I totally misunderstand this?

    • @WillGirling

    • @WillGirling
      @WillGirling  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah buddy great question - try reducing the ratio. So, if you're hitting say 90g of 80g like in beta fuel try dropping it to 60g/70g and doing this twice a week for 2 weeks then upping it from there.
      Remember though if your bottle has 80/90g in and you're eating on top it's obviously going to get a bit tricky. But twice a week gut training regime is my recommendation and why I use with people like yourself that I work with privately

    The information is good, but it feels very loose. You show malto, dextrose and sodium chloride but no recipe, just ratio per 100mL. I think it would be more helpful to say you have a 500mL or 750mL bottle, this is how much to use in each bottle. 2nd, you show sodium chloride, but then link electrolyte powder. I think the powder is better of course but it was a bit confusing. Lastly, if you were only going to mix 3 ingredients, Id recommend people to add sodium citrate over sodium chloride as the chloride will taste really bad, and as a salty sweater you won't be able to add as much. Happy to see the videos coming, keep up the good work!

    • @WillGirling
      @WillGirling  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers for the comment bud. The way ive explained it allows you to make 3 drinks to whatever amount of fluid you're having. Making it more personal to you, your choice, ride that day and plan. So, hydrating or carb focus etc. Everyone can work it out for whatever bottle size they have or camelbak or running bottle and so on. I do say salt or electrolyte powder and both provide the same sodium mg per 1g. Both are valid and both work and provide options not everyone has supplements but has salt. But yes it wont taste great for high strengths but electrolyte strength is very personal to the individual and should be done based on testing or strong anecdotal evidence if youre taking large quantities.
      Its fructose not dextrose btw bud
