I've never been able to grasp people's hate for water. I crave water consistently. I can drink other beverages, but it will not quench my thirst like water does. People act like that with soda and it blows my mind.
I hate the taste of water unless It is directly from a spring , if you know what I mean . You might say that I am a water connaisseur . Only rarely do I come across a spring so, You could say that I don't really drink water.
I'm from a rural part of Ireland , my grandad had to travel 3 miles to a well on a donkey and cart when he was young to fill barrels with water to bring home. Because of this ,water was used sparingly in his youth. I asked if they drank 2 litres a day, and he just laughed, there was 17 of them living in the house, he said you just had a small glass when you were thirsty , there's no way all 17 could have two litres a day! He survived , he's also 89 !
A neighbor is pushing 80, was born and raised in Greece on a farm. Very similar situation. He can be out in 115° weather digging a ditch and not feel thirsty. He doesn't eat between meals, and he doesn't drink fluids between meals. And he's able to dig ditches at almost 80!
Such a cute story and so nice you get to hang with your grandad at his age! Here in Portugal, a traditionally poor and small country, there were vast rural areas but water wasn't a typical problem (at least for consumption, not for farming), wells and fountains were everywhere.
I believe adding Celtic sea salt, which is a great source of electrolytes, to water, along with a lemon slice, is a great way to hydrate. I’ve suffered from kidney stones for 20+ years. I’ve been stone free for 5+ yrs now, by doing this. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I’ll never forget my coworker came to work - young girl She says to me “I’ve been on this gallon a day water cleanse I feel so terrible.” Once I explained she was flushing her body of all electrolytes and salt and the stuff our body needs, she understood how all that water was doing the opposite of what she wanted.
U need 1oz per 2 lbs of body weight per Day… = 200lb = 200oz of water per day. 1.5 gal per day 100 lbs = .78 gal per day. If you’re athletic or working the heat, you can drink a little more, but don’t drink too much.
I listen to Barbara ONeal’s podcasts and find them very helpful. She’s from Australia, a lovely woman with I think ten children. She was talking about drinking water and she said exactly what Dr. Berg said. She suggested to chew on a few grains (or crystals) of Celtic salt, which is known to be very rich in minerals, before drinking water and that will help the water to be absorbed into the cells. She said magnesium is known to be a thirsty mineral that will absorb the water into the cell. Doctors don’t give you this kind of information. I learn more from watching Dr. Berg and Barbara, as well as from reading comments (oh yes) than I do from doctors.
This just reminded me of something, I completely changed my health habits by finding out book called The 23 Former Doctor Truths by Lauren Clark. It was censored on multiple platforms.
Exactly! ❤ And if you feel too much of any of those, you probably have some nutrients deficiency, take bigger doses of them with their cofactors and get back to balance / homeostasis 😊 If too much thirsty: have electrolytes. If too much hungry have more proteins and animal fat, and some bile salts. Not hungry: Niacin and Zinc. If often feeling sad, make sure to get l-tryptophan, l-tyrosine, vitamin C (or at least ascorbic acid), B6, magnesium, D3, L-theanine, B12... If too much happy, just share it. If too much tired, take a CoQ10, PQQ, ALCAR (or at least l-carnitin), Niacin, B1, B9, B12, l-Taurine, l-creatine, and some Caffeine to counterbalance. If too much stressed out or insomnia: B1, B6, l-theanine, GABA, Magnesium, l-glycine, l-glutamine And always get enough zinc.

Come and hang gutters on a homes when the temperature is above 80 degrees and you will be swilling down the water like crazy! I'm so glad you made this video! In the last several years I've been having severe weakness etc and at this time last year I had applied for disability. I had been told years ago by a heart Dr that I should never consume salt. He even said that if people would stop consuming salt that he would be without a job. So, I stopped consuming salt altogether. Then I was told that I needed to drink tons of water and that would make me feel better because I must be dehydrated. So I started to do that. My health plumited. I was in and out of the er multiple times per month and rang up bills galore! I was on some blood pressure meds including a diaredic. Now why all those Drs could not figure out what was wrong with me is crazy. I started watching more videos on these subjects, including your videos, and made changes like including some pink salt and cut back the water, plus started taking more potassium and magnesium. I started to feel better within days! I then have continued with more videos and learned that not having a gallbladder has caused some vitamin deficiencies for me. So I take your suppliments. I'm really happy that I found you. You explain thing so well. Last year at this time I thought I was dying and now I feel so much better! Thank you
This is an option I have chosen to use. I'm not saying mine is the best but have found to work with me. I am a water drinker. I don't drink sugared drinks exept sometimes i may have some sweetened tea (very low with sugar). I like drinking spring water in the bottle. I add a pinch of celtic salt (has 82 natural minerals), shake it up and drink it normally. Yes, every bottle has a pinch of celtic salt. Now, you can also use himalayan salt the same way. At this time I've been ordering the celtic salt on Amazon. My advice also to salt users at the table. Throw away the regular table salt you've been using and use either himalayan or celtic salt. Table salt has been stripped of it's natural resources and replaced with 2 synthetic minerals. Your body cannot absorb synthetic minerals.
Yes Dr. Your right because my brother almost died last week and put into hospital because he was drinking to much water! And it did something to his potassium levels dropped below normal- he's gonna be alright 🙏
Yes you can die from drinking too much water. In severe cases, water intoxication can cause seizures, brain damage, a coma, and even death. Bottom line: Drinking too much water can increase the pressure inside the skull. This can cause various symptoms and, in severe cases, become fatal.
Being an athlete in South Florida the difference between drinking plain water and water with electrolytes is night and day. You MUST use electrolytes in water to prevent heat exhaustion. The electrolyte powder I use is LMNT which contains zero sugar.
agree with that, I did mountain bike racing, which is very hard on the body, i used to use Isostar a lot. later... once i found that all the glucose/sugar in it wasn't so good for your teeth, i started drinking water, and hell i was so bloated i could not move in comparison. electrolytes hydrate you so much better.
I’m a roofer in Florida. Tried everything over the years. Now I make my own. I put 12 ounces of water, 1/2 tsps of salt, and pure lemon juice. Mix it up good. I drink 4-5 a day and I’m good to go
@@snk6795 Pink H salt does not bother your blood pressure. Controls high blood pressure as it is lower in sodium than table salt. Contrary to regular salt, pink Himalayan salt does not dehydrate you. In fact it aids with hydration as it helps maintaining fluid balance and blood pressure in your body.
I live in a place where we are lucky enough to have really great and clean water. I remember one New Years Eve where we were stranded in the woods by a massive snow dump. We managed to get to the neighbor’s and they were home. None of us had anything to drink except our wonderful water right out of the creek. We all toasted the new year in water, no one complained.
Agree with the general premise. I just might add that as Dr. Berg was saying, working out and hot weather really changes the equation. I've heard thirst described as a lagging indicator, so you might be sweating like crazy long before you get thirsty. I get pounding headaches after sweating really hard, sometimes even nausea and vomiting, so if I know I'm going to have prolonged exposure to hot weather or am going to do a long intense workout, the easiest way for me to avoid those massive headaches and other symptoms is to pre-hydrate. Overall, I agree that if you're sitting indoors all day in climate-controlled environments then you shouldn't force yourself to drink, but in really hot weather or during workouts you probably don't want to wait to get thirsty.
Same here! I need to drink tons of water or else I get headaches if I'm in the sun doing work. So I've learned now to just drink as much water as possible before, during, and after any intense activity in the sun. No more headaches, also hydration bladders make it so much easier to keep drinking all day.
I totally agree .Im a plumber in South Louisiana and during our hot and very humid summers my water intake will be between 1-2 gallons a day . And in drinking that I only pee once or twice during work everything else is sweated out .All day outdoor physical labor you have to stay hydrated .But when it cools down I only drink a couple glasses of water a day .
Also you need more water if you are losing weight. I can tell when my metabolism has increased (after detoxing etc.) when I wake up a couple times a night with a dry mouth & craving water. I need to drink a glass of water every 3 hours and still wake up thirsty. Water helps with metabolism and also with detoxing.
Great advice Doc., but one important point. Many older adults as they age lose their thirst response. Dehydration amongst the elderly is a major problem and potentially dangerous. Postural hypotension can be a major cause of falls in the elderly, especially late at night rising to go to the bathroom or getting off the toilet. Falling in the bathroom can result in serious injury in the already frail. I’ve seen it result in major head trauma.
My mom basically died of dehydration. She had a stroke so they had to mix her water with thickener and it tasted horrible. I bought flavors for her water and she indicated it was better but she could still taste it. They knew she wasn’t drinking much but she totally quit drinking…she just dumped her water on the floor. I wasn’t allowed in during that entire time, from her stroke to her death, because of the pandemic so I had to rely on her assisted living facility to tell me what was going on. Her kidneys, organs shut down.
My body generally doesn't alert me about being "thirsty". I could go the whole day without drinking. That's a problem. By the end of the day I would get a real headache. So yeah I need to force myself to drink.
I went from drinking 2 bottles of water to 4 1/2 or 5 a day. I can wake up easier now, I have more energy, I'm nicer, and my skin looks so much better. Everyone is different, so you have to do what is best for YOU. Great video Doc

As a diabetic patient, I am constantly thirsty. Frequent urination, headaches etc when I do not drink copious amounts (hypoglycemic). Restarting my keto plan after multiple medical injuries, chronic pain, 130 pound weight gain, hospitalizations etc. Thank you Dr. Berg for providing the motivation to reset my health.
I stopped drinking a lot of water because I noticed I started going to the bathroom too much, not necessary, I also didn't feel like I was that thirsty and just forcing myself was not good.
If your pee is always clear, then you might drink too much. In the morning it is usually not of course. I think it's easy to adjust. Very light colors during the day should be best.
Thank you for the insight. As a muslim currently fasting 16-17 hours a day with no food or water, it really is incredible to see how quickly the body adjusts and how little it needs to thrive. In fact I have more energy during the fast then I do whilst regularly eating meals throughout the day. Over consumption of anything will always be destructive. Our Prophet PBUH would fast regularly and never eat to his fill. Consuming moderately would alleviate many of the issues we face both personally but also on a wider communal scale.
Word of warning. I had a coworker who was a super jock. This was in Florida. He was out riding a bike and drinking lots and lots of water. Because he overdid it, he fell into a coma for seven years before he died. It was a terrible loss. Dr. Berg is making a very important point. Heed it well.
@@MadameBraynDamaj if you sweat alot like cycling or other cardio. You lose a lot of salt with that sweat. If you drink normal water you dilute the remaining electrolytes even more in your body. Had the same Problem once. Almost Fell uncouncious during treadmill. I only drink my homemade electrolyte drink now. Way better
My doctor was still on the 8 glasses kick the last time we talked about hydration. This was an eleven minute video. If you have a doctor that doesn't first talk about diet and lifestyle before talking about medicines, then you need a new doctor. It's the Americanized Sickcare industry folks, don't expect cures, expect prolonged ailments. Same thing with my friend who used heroin for about 2 years starting 10 years ago. He's been on suboxone ever since. I asked him why they haven't weened him off yet after this long, and he said because he doesn't want too and is still addicted.
Many foods (real food: vegetables and fruit) consist of a lot of water. Plus they contain those electrolytes as well. Eating the right things + drinking only when your thirsty is the key.
Only drinking few glasses a day. Can’t do more. I do lemon squeezed green tea. Coca Cola will hate this video. Do plenty of vegetables and fruits which have water. I don’t drink juices or sodas anymore.
@@kevincovins3546 100% juice from store is pasteurized and a lot of time they add sugar to it. also, they take out the fibers from it. you're better of blending up fruits yourself and add water to them. also, home juicers take-out a lot of nutrients so i will never use a juicer.
I was diagnosed with hyponatremia almost 15 years ago - dang me how fast time flies. I was also diagnosed with T2D. Yep, unbearable and unrelievable thirst led my husband to pester me to go to the doc and get tested for diabetes. These days, my thirst regulator, while not exactly broken, it IS quite running like a not fully flattened tire. My body has realized that the only way to let me know I need to hydrate is to give me dry lips.Yes. Dry lips. It takes a minute for me to get the clue, but at least I do. Get the clue. When I was pregnant, I was always thirsty. I would drink minimum a gallon of water a day, yet I always felt dehydrated. I would urinate every 30 minutes and it just felt like the water was not hydrating my body. I had oligohydramnios (low amniotic fluid) and was told to keep drinking pure water and no less than a gallon a day which is what I did. Nothing helped until they put an IV on me… now I understand why. Thank you.

Research God's time/calendar in Genesis 1:14. God MAY allow “The Powers To Be “ to enforce some type of “Sabbath Law” to see if we will keep His law or no before He delivers His scattered people from the nations. How can the true Sabbath be Friday, Saturday, Sunday, etc, if we are commanded by God in Genesis 1:14 to let the lights in heaven be for days, years, etc.? Besides, the beginning of God's months start with the new moon days. The Gregorian Calendar hanging on our walls, in our houses, do not start it’s months with the new moon day as the scriptures testify. The new moon day falls anywhere and everywhere on that time/calendar....How can the beginning of the month start in the midst of a month or, how can the first day of the month also be the seventh day Sabbath? God has three category of days, the new moon day, the six work days and the Sabbath day, they never, ever, overlaps each other. Ezekiel 46:1-3, 2 Kings 4:17-23. Look at the scriptures in Genesis 7:11, Genesis 8:4,5,13,14 and tell me what and whose time/calendar is being used here? We must abandon our traditions, stop worshiping God in vain and do things God’s way. Let us not deceive ourselves, there will be no good reward for keeping man’s doctrines in the place of what God commands. We make God's Word of none effect when we cling to our traditions. Comes down to mineral balance and ph level, not water volume. This man is absolutely correct. Sometimes less is more. It’s great to add some natural mineral salt for ph to water. Fruit juice(pasturized) is dead sugar water with no enzymes. For hydration, fresh fruit, raw dairy, coconut water, and an occasional sip of regular water with a pinch of salt is best.
Can you tell me what to drink to stay hydrated i have a soccer game tomorrow and and my mouth gets dry quickly from running and even if i drink water half time i still get dehydrated fast
@@who8979 a pinch of salt with your glass of water to soften it for better absorption. Also, costco has organic coco-water, add it to your glass of water as well. And visualize the water hydrating you as you take slow purposeful, sips. You’ll be hydrated then i promise you.
I put a pinch of Hydrol in my water on occasion as I drink a lot of tea and coffee. A younger me would crave water and I'd drink 2 litres three to four times a day! Boy did I suffer from cramps. I'm working on cutting back on drinking so much tea and coffee as I still cramp up a lot. I drink much less water though and I can feel it. My brain and body feel sluggish a lot of the time.

I use my Urine Color as a gauge for my hydration. the darker the yellow the more I need to hydrate. Great advice as always Doc. I will try to add more electrolytes
Fun fact, if you eat a whole bunch of blueberries, u may see a shade of purple in ur urine. Recently found that out for myself lol. I was getting paranoid, until i was able to backtrack n figure out why. Don't overdose on blueberries people... Everything in moderation.
I worked outside in South Carolina heat from high school to about age 40. I didn't like water, so I drank Gatorade all day. I'm pretty sure that this fact and living on fast food during those years are the reason that I've been diabetic type 2 for the last 20 plus years. Age 62 now, fixing my body with low carb, Keto and IF.
Absolutely true. There was a short time when I decided to force myself to drink upwards of 2 litres of water daily. It felt uncomfortable, I got shivers and felt cold, I got constipated, and psychologically, I got more anxious and depressed. These symptoms disappeared when I resumed consuming fluids according to my thirst.
Yeah, same here, except for the constipation (because I take magnesium). Whenever I overdo it on water, it almost always throws me out of balance and causes mild dehydration. I can literally see/feel my skin shrivel up sometimes and my face/body loses that "plumpness" as my body desperately tries to compensate for too much water.
It was always drummed into me that I should drink water several glasses a day but I couldn't. I was told if I was thirsty, it meant I was really dehydrated. I believe what you say. It can easily be overdone.

I've heard of people drinking a gallon a day. That seem like way to much but they say they feel better and it helps them to not eat snakes throughout the day. Between the water and not snacking they are losing weight. I'm sure it helps with digestion.
Concerning the hydration of the body I believe it is quite personal, depending on climate, exercise and the food we eat. Somebody eating big salads and "wet" food will require less water. For example eating saulty and spicy food will require more water. It all depends how live and what we do. The only thing we can do is watch how we feel and act accordingly.
I‘m an MD, Naturopath and Nutritionist. Best way is to drink one glass of fluoride free water before and after each meal. When you eat 70% local fruits and vegetables you need about 1.5 liter water daily.
@@Mack98421 Thanks for asking. 1500ml divided by 6 glasses is 250ml per glass. That's enough for any healthy person in any climate. Exception if the person is exercising intensively then 1800 ml is required. If the person eats an additional 70% of local fruit and vegetables, the best of all possibilities is achieved. I have sporadically tested over the years whether the claims are correct that you should drink far more than 1500 ml, around 2-3 liters a day. In any case, it was wrong. Only some kidney and heart failure should drink less than 1500 ml a day.
I think part of the issue is that so many people are drinking filtered/bottled water where all the electrolytes have been removed. Also, we've been told for all too many years how unhealthy salt in our diets is. I wish people really were told more about how important the sodium/potassium balance really is. Most of us don't come close to getting the 1.5 to 2 grams of potassium per day.
@Ken You made a really good point Ken. Ultimately it’s about the balance of water with salt, potassium and magnesium. It’s cliché to say but like so many things in life it’s about BALANCE.
I do not give a damn for diets, as they are all biased agenda peddling rather than based upon facts, yes, even diets that are needed due to disorders and allergies.
That's why you get mineral water or well water. I've been to one of the factory of a certain bottled manufacturer here and they do actually use natural spring water and just UV blast them, no RO involved so I am sure the minerals are still in the water. The taste is different too from RO water. I also drink boiled well water from my property and I don't even have to filter it because it's so clear.
For those saying "My mom is 1000 years old and only ever drinks 4 glasses of water per day...", know that health is the result of hundreds of factors, including water, diet, exercise, stress, lifestyle, where you live, etc, etc, etc. Water is just one factor, albeit a rather impactful one.
I drink a glass of water when I'm thirsty or whenever I simply feel like it. Works for me - and I'm still alive. Not everything has to be turned into a science. Just listen to your body and apply common sense.
Seems simple enough, but society is set up to keep us productive while consuming, not to pay attention to or to be in touch with our body. People numb out a lot, we’re going through a ton as a society, which enhances the disconnection. So what you’re saying makes sense, yes, but it’s not as common as we’d like for people to listen to their body or to turn to food/drink intuitively.
Yeah.. listen to your body. Everytime I get a headache, it is usually dehydration. 3 or 4 glasses of water and my headache is gone. No need for tylenol or any pain killers or sleep
If something "works for me" , does that absolutely GUARANTEE your habit works for every human? Wouldn't you prefer to be well informed? Not everyone is aware of what their body feels like. And think of how many things could cause that - many psychological reasons, some physical ones. Science, at least, concentrates our minds on known facts which, when we learn them, gives us the advantage of making an 'informed decision' instead of an uninformed one.
I felt insanely thirsty and then ate some grapes and I felt totally hydrated. I then noticed if I eat foods my body feels hydrated... but if I limit food and drink tons of water I feel thirsty all the time and pee alot
My grandmother told me she drank alot of water as a kid and as an adult a glass of wine every night before bed and didn't smoke she worked at AC spark plug until she was 65 and lived to 101 years old .

I only drink water when I feel to do so and I live in a tropical region where temperature reach up to 33 c. I was told to drink water regularly but I couldn't. Now I have found the right explanation for that. THANK YOU A LOT.
Since I was a child everytime I ran or did physical work, expecially on hot sunny days, I would get dizzy and feel like I was going to pass out. I only realized when I was an adult that it was dehydration and a drink of water instantly made me feel better, even though I didn't feel thirsty at all. So it's good to stay hydrated even if you don't feel thirsty, especially on hot days or during physically demanding work or exercise. As a child, I rarely drank water I only drank sugary soft drinks.

Even when I tried to make an effort of this "drink water all day mania" I usually forgot my water bottle or forgot to drink the contents and felt guilty. Thanks for validating what my body always told me " drink when thirsty and at other times use your common sense".
The most accurate way to determine how hydrated you are is urine color and output. If the color is darker and you urinate less frequently then you should increase your fluid intake. Especially if you are excercising, just because you are not thirsty doesn't mean you are hydrated and good to go.

@@vaitomanocu5562 I think that is good but not completely accurate for all. My urine is almost always perfect, even in days I'm not fully hydrated. This is why he mentions urine _density_ toward the end of this video as a better indicative measure.
eat more salt then you will be thirstier, no one talks about how most people don't eat enough salt that why people aren't thirsty. I would aim for about 3000mg if your not active thats the global average. Every hour of sweat is 1700 mg about so you got to replace that for every hour out.
The last year I was in the army, 4 men died in a long training course due to hyponatremia. Plenty of water, but the 60+ day course involved greatly reduced sleep and food to try to simulate combat conditions. They just sat down and died. It almost happened to me training for triathlons, part way into a 20 mile run, the water I was drinking just sat in my stomach sloshing around. I made it home and passed out for more than a day. I only realized afterward how bad and haphazard my nutrition intake was. That was the old 8+ glasses a day force hydration mode.
Yes, electrolytes are just as important as water, as your neurons cannot fire without those chemicals (which includes neurons in your brain, heart, and all of your muscles). Since strenuous exercise significantly increases the amount of neuron activity, it means you'd need even more than usual.

So generally -Drink water when you're thirsty (what a concept) - electrolytes are just as important (have a look at homemade electrolyte drinks on YT) - if you are drinking coffee and sodas, follow up with a little water. - if it's hot and or humid, in take a bit more but not too much. - the only time you need to take in a lot of water is when you have kidney stones. - hotter climate dwellers should drink a little more.
You forgot about physically straight activities such as hiking. If you are on a long hike you need to regularly drink, and then follow up irregularly with salty and sugary foods and or drinks. This Is to keep you hydrated (water and electrolytes) and the sugar to keep your blood sugar from crashing.
He says fruit juice dehydrates you, but a few years ago, my mom's tennis coach gave us some articles citing research that showed that a roughly half and half mix of fruit juice and water hydrated more efficiently than plain juice or plain water. I found it very helpful, along with the advice to sip often rather than gulping a lot infrequently.
This is false, God has design everything we need to stay hydrated from water, and electrolytes from fructose! This what doctors dont want you to know. They give you fructose IV when you and dehydrated in hospital. Fruit sugar is natural

Were these studies done under a certain context? For instance, I wouldn't be shocked if Gatorade was actually more hydrating during exercise than plain water due to sugar and electrolyte depletion. However, that fact wouldn't justify drinking it all day long. Also, population, type of exercise, and drink composition could all generate a larger difference in impact for some groups than drink vs no-drink in other groups It should also be noted that the likes coca-cola/minute maid, welches, and other "juice" brands produce alot of drinks and put their foot on the scale of science regularly. I'm not necessarily making any definitive claims, just that science is more complex than the ways people most often use it
Years ago when i first developed anorexia i remember chugging around 18 cups of water a day. I got so sick. My bladder was almost irreversibly damaged. Rough times
When I was a kid and had gastroenteritis, they said that drinking sport drinks could cause inflammation in your brain and be dangerous. I love that nowadays we have this wonderful information available to understand the mechanisms and avoid urban myths
Thank you for the education, Dr. Berg. I know that when my body tells me it wants a drink, the water tastes like nectar. At those times, I drink my fill and my body truly feels refreshed. I'm glad to know that I can continue to drink water like this, rather than force-drinking 8 glasses a day. I think it's important to allow my body to tell me when, since it's working correctly. I've always thought that different body sizes, types, etc required differing amounts of water to be adequately hydrated, despite what many health professionals say. And drinking more than four glasses of water a day tends to make me feel ill. Thanks Dr Berg for your insight.
imo this is true for almost anything health-wise. Everyone's bodies are so different that you can't make any rigid rules about needing "x amount of ____" because it really varies so much from person to person. Some people are so different they're practically different species

I trained myself to drink half a liter of water the first thing in the morning. I feel that works well for me. Now, based on this video, is that bad or not?
My mom’s 92 years old and never drinks more than 4 glasses of water a day. She’s extremely healthy! The trend seems to be, drink water, even if you’re not thirsty and avoid gluten. I wonder what’s next? These trends seem to be shortcuts for good health with little logic. Dear Dr. Berg says hydration happens in the cells, when they’re working right, you don’t have to over water yourself. My mom’s an example of that.
When I was pregnant at 34 years old, I was drinking a ton of water and still felt very thirsty. When I told it to my doctor, I was told to start drinking some gatoraid, but it wasn't explained to me that only drinking water isn't really good. I was just told to do it, and it did solve the problem. I believed the "drink more water" push going on at that time. (I am 51 years old now). I have lived long enough to go through lots of these stupid diet trends. Today, I stick with the simple "moderation" with everything. I drink when I am thirsty, and I drink a variety of things throughout the day. I try and keep it healthy... like cranberry juice, apple juice, tea's without caffeine, lemon water, and the like and I have been just fine with it. I even do soda's on occasion. Just mix it up. Don't over do any one thing, when it comes to food and drink. We hyper focus all the time on these diet trends. Then, later down the road we decide it wasn't good to do that, but we just stupidly move on to another one. People, just use moderation with everything. If you are that concerned with it, then get your vitamin levels checked.
Dr. Berg, I am a runner. Ran my first marathon this past December. During my training I was continually advised by different expert runners to not wait until you're thirsty to drink during the run. There reasoning is that during the race you're past dehydration if you drink when you're thirsty. What's your thoughts on this in the middle of the race? I appreciate your channel. You've really changed my life. 30lbs down, healthy gut, and great energy. All because I listened to you.
Before your race, you should practice a hydration plan during your training. What type of drink will you consume, how much, and what signals does your body give you. Then during the race, you should stick to that plan closely, allowing for minor deviations due to factors like aid station placement, temperature on race day, or whatever. You also don't want to overconsume fluids during a race because it can lead to unwanted bathroom stops, or outright gastric distress. Remember, running is only one part of your training plan.
So what do we all do? I've given up alcohol & sugar altogether alcohol just over a year ago and sugar 8days ago. I'm still not losing weight and I'm still diabetic? I'm finding it hard now because I want to completely be free from diabetes.
In Australia it has always been to drink two litres a day of H20 (about 8 glasses). Only recently it has been reported by the relevant Medical authority that this does not apply anymore. Really difficult to understand how even simple things are messed up in the first place. I am a big water drinker, in particular when it gets past those 100 degree days.
Because new tests and new areas of science are always being explored. Remember, there was a time when people didn't realize that thermometers filled with Mercury could be toxic. People to this day will still swallow tapeworms for weight loss if they get desperate enough. People didn't realize the massive doses of radiation from older televisions and computer monitors were bad for you. Besides, do you really think "big water" wants it known that you could consume LESS of their overpriced plastic leeched crap and be just fine?
Depens on what you are doing, temp, but also humidity of the air. If air humidity is high, your body cant cool well, bc most heat is extracted by the state change from liquid to gas, which then cant happen well. So you only sweat more. Which dehydrates you more, so you need to drink more. Dry heat is much easier on the system than wet heat. For instance the US east coast is very humid usually, bc of humid air coming in from the ocean. Much easier on the west coast of the US, where humidity is usually a lot lower. Same for the Europe/Asia continent, where it is easier in western Europe. As for Australia, it will also depend on which coast you are. Where the prevailing winds come from. Land wind is dry. Ocean wind humid.
My husband and I both love your videos. That said, he keeps telling me that YOU said I'm drinking too much water. So let me tell you my points, and I'd really appreciate your feedback. I average about 128 oz a day ( 4 x 32oz bottle ) I eat really clean, no sugar and take supplements like trace minerals. I exercise on average 30 mins a day. The water I drink is from our well and we have a water softener on our system ( salt ). I do drink a cup or two of black coffee each day but other than an occasional Kombucha or coconut water, I only drink water. I hope you will give us some feedback. What I have been pondering: Constipation can be a sign of dehydration or magnesium deficiency, the latter I'm not so sure of. So fruit juices, such as prune, and osmotic laxatives, such as magnesium citrate, work by drawing water in to the intestines. The question is, where is this water coming from? And can this make you even more dehydrated? What are other options?
Try to eat some fiber with each meal. Fruits, vegetables, legumes. Prunes are good. I suggest staying away from over the counter laxatives. They can cause a rebound effect. Stay active by minimally walking.
When I look back at my childhood and college days I drank almost no water at all. Only coffee in the morning and once in a while soda. As insane as this sounds, I've had no ill effects.. now just a few cups a day is more than enough. The water companies want you to buy gallons of water each day.
I am 50 in May 2022, and drinking lots of water was a thing when I was a young child. There was even a story of a woman who drank so much water, that her body ballooned right up like a big beach ball.
@@jrstf I grew up in the city. We didn't have air conditioning and put outside every day. As an older person I drink just a common sense amount. I think those who have stories of their pancreas exploding are those who never drank water and drank alcohol often.
My mom and I were just discussing this. She was saying how when she drinks too much watch she feels sick, and I told her she need to drink something to help replenish her electrolytes.

I get excessively thirsty when fasting and I know it's sodium related. Soemtimes I am not hungry but will have a soup just to put salt in it. All about electrolytes, smart water or electrolytes water devices are the best. Used to have them

My doctor told me to cut back on the water I drink! This all makes sense...41 years ago they told me no salt! I started having salt with my Keto three years ago, the edema they were worried about didn't happen!

I know how electrolyte imbalance feels. Drinking water would make my stomach burn and I started having heartburns. Craving for salt also increased. Solved easily by less water and more electrolytes by ORS.

Thinking back through the first 50 years of my life (I'm 66 now), we didn't drink even half of what the so-called experts say we should be drinking. We were fine! Didn't hear anything about dehydration unless it was a very hot summer like 1976 when the TV news advised people to drink more than usual. But no big deal was made out of it. It amuses me to see people grasping onto their water bottles like they are dying of thirst! My first job when I left school, we worked 10 hour shifts. We had three short breaks of 20 minutes each in that time and that was the only opportunity to drink something. I can't recall anyone ever passing out or being ill. This mania with water is just so odd.
This is so true. It is a fad and nothing more. As a nutrition specialist, I asked "why" and got slammed by "experts". But in the end, they never answered, and I found out on my own that it's just an opinion based on misinterpreted data. A study found that we GET 8 glasses of water a day with food and the little water we do ingest. It never said we need 8 glasses a day, ever. That fad is hurting people today.
Dr Berg, I've read that the best source of hydration comes from drinking coconut water...and I mean right out of the young green coconut, not the sugar laden cartons of coconut water you buy at the supermarket. Natural coconut water has high levels of both Potassium and Sodium. I believe this to be true as I drank the water from 2 coconuts before playing tennis in the hot sun for an hour and a half and did not feel thirsty enough to drink anything afterwards. What are your thoughts?
In the Philippines. I would be very thirsty from heat and the sun and plain water is lacking sometimes but one fresh coconut water and I feel so much better .
I'm the worst case scenario. I lost a kidney due to a birth defect when I was a teenager. I still have the kidney, but it might as well be a water balloon. The good kidney basically shuts down when I become dehydrated. Too much acid in the tummy also will cause it stop working, and when this happens it feels like I have a kidney stone. So I pay attention to hydration. Most folks don't, and why should they? However, using me as a benchmark folks with normal plumbing can also get into some level of stress by being dehydrated whether they realize it or not. Thirst should NEVER be the measure of when to grab something to drink. By the time you get thirsty you're already in trouble. The thing is to get some fluid BEFORE your thirst mechanism kicks in. Only trial and error per person gets the balance right. And most folks just don't want to worry with that. I don't blame 'em. I wouldn't either if I didn't have to.
I work outside. I used to drink about a gallon of water while working in the hot weather. In the afternoon I would pee more. Every once in a while I would get light headed around mid morning. Now, I drink about 2 quarts of water in the Summer. Then 16oz-32oz of Gatorade after work. I feel much better. My pee can get dark and even brown-ish. But I really don't over analyze this because I monitor my fluid intake. I am 55 and never had a heat related problem. Force drinking a gallon of water a day is a good example of how people over-analyze things. All that water will wick the minerals out of your body, like a flood.
This is my experience but I make myself a smoothie in the morning every once in a while and i definitely feel less thirsty through out the day. Even after i eat food, i don’t feel thirsty at all. The smoothie i make has strawberries, blueberries, peaches, mango, 3 key limes squeezed in, and apple juice.

Back in the late 70s, my high school football coach almost killed me with those summer double practice sessions in the blazing heat. A few water breaks with no electrolytes and I was always on the verge of heatstroke, having to practice with a pounding headache- it truly felt like hell on Earth to me. Coupled with ankle and shoulder injuries that never had time to heal, it was a miserable experience and I'm constantly reminded when the arthritis flares up.
When I was an Active Duty Marine (1998-1999 timeframe), I wound up with heat stroke during the rifle range. I had been and was up to the incident drinking water and this occurred on day 4 or 5 of the range. And then had to run a PFT about a week later. Heat Exhaustion. The doctor told me it was electrolyte dehydration. I'd been drinking bottled water and was in a desert. So water didn't help. But at that point and time the USMC didn't address electrolytes. Just pushed drink water.
Yup. I was in the Army 2002-2010, same thing. I still hear the sing-song “Drink Water!!” and us pulling out our canteens in basic. We did have sports drinks available to us when I was deployed to Iraq ‘05-‘06 though.
There is a hormone created by the body that regulates how much water the body holds. I know because my daughter had a brain tumor and is on lifetime medication because she doesn't have it. If I were to drink even six glasses a day, I'd be urinating every 30 minutes. I just don't need as much water as some people. How often (or not) one urinates should also be a clue on how much water is right for you.
It could also be because you are drinking lifeless water without electrolytes, minerals. So the water is passing through you. Or you could be getting enough water from your diet from fruits and vegetables. There are many reasons why water passes through some people. The only way to tell is to measure your hydration level as dr berg suggested.

In various circles, the common phrase is that "if one/you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated", so they push the non-stop drinking of water. Water & electrolytes are both used a great deal in those circles, to acknowledge the necessity of certain salts for staying hydrated.
Me(72yrs) and a partner(65yrs) go gold prospecting in the desert, usually in the Arizona desert. Our backpack weight is a concern. We carry 4 bottles of water and 1 bottle of electrolytes each per day. We use the electrolytes only if we 'feel' dehydrated. After seeing this, I think we will modify our strategy. thanks Dr. Berg
I've never been able to grasp people's hate for water. I crave water consistently. I can drink other beverages, but it will not quench my thirst like water does. People act like that with soda and it blows my mind.
I hate the taste of water unless It is directly from a spring , if you know what I mean . You might say that I am a water connaisseur . Only rarely do I come across a spring so, You could say that I don't really drink water.
I can't think of any other liquid that is more refreshing than cold water.

I'm from a rural part of Ireland , my grandad had to travel 3 miles to a well on a donkey and cart when he was young to fill barrels with water to bring home. Because of this ,water was used sparingly in his youth. I asked if they drank 2 litres a day, and he just laughed, there was 17 of them living in the house, he said you just had a small glass when you were thirsty , there's no way all 17 could have two litres a day!
He survived , he's also 89 !

A neighbor is pushing 80, was born and raised in Greece on a farm.
Very similar situation. He can be out in 115° weather digging a ditch and not feel thirsty. He doesn't eat between meals, and he doesn't drink fluids between meals. And he's able to dig ditches at almost 80!
Such a cute story and so nice you get to hang with your grandad at his age! Here in Portugal, a traditionally poor and small country, there were vast rural areas but water wasn't a typical problem (at least for consumption, not for farming), wells and fountains were everywhere.

I’ll never forget my coworker came to work - young girl She says to me “I’ve been on this gallon a day water cleanse I feel so terrible.” Once I explained she was flushing her body of all electrolytes and salt and the stuff our body needs, she understood how all that water was doing the opposite of what she wanted.

100 lbs = .78 gal per day. If you’re athletic or working the heat, you can drink a little more, but don’t drink too much.

I listen to Barbara ONeal’s podcasts and find them very helpful. She’s from Australia, a lovely woman with I think ten children. She was talking about drinking water and she said exactly what Dr. Berg said. She suggested to chew on a few grains (or crystals) of Celtic salt, which is known to be very rich in minerals, before drinking water and that will help the water to be absorbed into the cells. She said magnesium is known to be a thirsty mineral that will absorb the water into the cell.
Doctors don’t give you this kind of information. I learn more from watching Dr. Berg and Barbara, as well as from reading comments (oh yes) than I do from doctors.

And if you feel too much of any of those, you probably have some nutrients deficiency, take bigger doses of them with their cofactors and get back to balance / homeostasis 😊
If too much thirsty: have electrolytes.
If too much hungry have more proteins and animal fat, and some bile salts.
Not hungry: Niacin and Zinc.
If often feeling sad, make sure to get l-tryptophan, l-tyrosine, vitamin C (or at least ascorbic acid), B6, magnesium, D3, L-theanine, B12...
If too much happy, just share it.
If too much tired, take a CoQ10, PQQ, ALCAR (or at least l-carnitin), Niacin, B1, B9, B12, l-Taurine, l-creatine, and some Caffeine to counterbalance.
If too much stressed out or insomnia: B1, B6, l-theanine, GABA, Magnesium, l-glycine, l-glutamine
And always get enough zinc.

Come and hang gutters on a homes when the temperature is above 80 degrees and you will be swilling down the water like crazy! The water my 67 year old brother and I, 57 years old, is distilled, added Trace Minerals and Redmonds SALT. In the last several years I've been having severe weakness etc and at this time last year I had applied for disability. I had been told years ago by a heart Dr that I should never consume salt. He even said that if people would stop consuming salt that he would be without a job.
So, I stopped consuming salt altogether.
Then I was told that I needed to drink tons of water and that would make me feel better because I must be dehydrated. So I started to do that. My health plumited. I was in and out of the er multiple times per month and rang up bills galore!
I was on some blood pressure meds including a diaredic.
Now why all those Drs could not figure out what was wrong with me is crazy.
I started watching more videos on these subjects, including your videos, and made changes like including some pink salt and cut back the water, plus started taking more potassium and magnesium.
I started to feel better within days!
I then have continued with more videos and learned that not having a gallbladder has caused some vitamin deficiencies for me. So I take your suppliments.

This is an option I have chosen to use. I'm not saying mine is the best but have found to work with me. I am a water drinker. I don't drink sugared drinks exept sometimes i may have some sweetened tea (very low with sugar). I like drinking spring water in the bottle. I add a pinch of celtic salt (has 82 natural minerals), shake it up and drink it normally. Yes, every bottle has a pinch of celtic salt. Now, you can also use himalayan salt the same way. At this time I've been ordering the celtic salt on Amazon. My advice also to salt users at the table. Throw away the regular table salt you've been using and use either himalayan or celtic salt. Table salt has been stripped of it's natural resources and replaced with 2 synthetic minerals. Your body cannot absorb synthetic minerals.

Yes you can die from drinking too much water. In severe cases, water intoxication can cause seizures, brain damage, a coma, and even death. Bottom line: Drinking too much water can increase the pressure inside the skull. This can cause various symptoms and, in severe cases, become fatal.

Being an athlete in South Florida the difference between drinking plain water and water with electrolytes is night and day. You MUST use electrolytes in water to prevent heat exhaustion. The electrolyte powder I use is LMNT which contains zero sugar.

agree with that, I did mountain bike racing, which is very hard on the body, i used to use Isostar a lot. later... once i found that all the glucose/sugar in it wasn't so good for your teeth, i started drinking water, and hell i was so bloated i could not move in comparison. electrolytes hydrate you so much better.
I’m a roofer in Florida. Tried everything over the years. Now I make my own. I put 12 ounces of water, 1/2 tsps of salt, and pure lemon juice. Mix it up good. I drink 4-5 a day and I’m good to go

@@snk6795 Pink H salt does not bother your blood pressure. Controls high blood pressure as it is lower in sodium than table salt. Contrary to regular salt, pink Himalayan salt does not dehydrate you. In fact it aids with hydration as it helps maintaining fluid balance and blood pressure in your body.
I live in a place where we are lucky enough to have really great and clean water. I remember one New Years Eve where we were stranded in the woods by a massive snow dump. We managed to get to the neighbor’s and they were home. None of us had anything to drink except our wonderful water right out of the creek. We all toasted the new year in water, no one complained.
Agree with the general premise. I just might add that as Dr. Berg was saying, working out and hot weather really changes the equation. I've heard thirst described as a lagging indicator, so you might be sweating like crazy long before you get thirsty. I get pounding headaches after sweating really hard, sometimes even nausea and vomiting, so if I know I'm going to have prolonged exposure to hot weather or am going to do a long intense workout, the easiest way for me to avoid those massive headaches and other symptoms is to pre-hydrate. Overall, I agree that if you're sitting indoors all day in climate-controlled environments then you shouldn't force yourself to drink, but in really hot weather or during workouts you probably don't want to wait to get thirsty.
Same here! I need to drink tons of water or else I get headaches if I'm in the sun doing work. So I've learned now to just drink as much water as possible before, during, and after any intense activity in the sun. No more headaches, also hydration bladders make it so much easier to keep drinking all day.

I totally agree .Im a plumber in South Louisiana and during our hot and very humid summers my water intake will be between 1-2 gallons a day . And in drinking that I only pee once or twice during work everything else is sweated out .All day outdoor physical labor you have to stay hydrated .But when it cools down I only drink a couple glasses of water a day .

Also you need more water if you are losing weight. I can tell when my metabolism has increased (after detoxing etc.) when I wake up a couple times a night with a dry mouth & craving water. I need to drink a glass of water every 3 hours and still wake up thirsty. Water helps with metabolism and also with detoxing.
Great advice Doc., but one important point. Many older adults as they age lose their thirst response. Dehydration amongst the elderly is a major problem and potentially dangerous. Postural hypotension can be a major cause of falls in the elderly, especially late at night rising to go to the bathroom or getting off the toilet. Falling in the bathroom can result in serious injury in the already frail. I’ve seen it result in major head trauma.

This happened to my elderly father.
My mom basically died of dehydration. She had a stroke so they had to mix her water with thickener and it tasted horrible. I bought flavors for her water and she indicated it was better but she could still taste it. They knew she wasn’t drinking much but she totally quit drinking…she just dumped her water on the floor. I wasn’t allowed in during that entire time, from her stroke to her death, because of the pandemic so I had to rely on her assisted living facility to tell me what was going on. Her kidneys, organs shut down.

As a diabetic patient, I am constantly thirsty. Frequent urination, headaches etc when I do not drink copious amounts (hypoglycemic). Restarting my keto plan after multiple medical injuries, chronic pain, 130 pound weight gain, hospitalizations etc. Thank you Dr. Berg for providing the motivation to reset my health.

If your pee is always clear, then you might drink too much. In the morning it is usually not of course. I think it's easy to adjust. Very light colors during the day should be best.

As a muslim currently fasting 16-17 hours a day with no food or water, it really is incredible to see how quickly the body adjusts and how little it needs to thrive.
In fact I have more energy during the fast then I do whilst regularly eating meals throughout the day.
Over consumption of anything will always be destructive. Our Prophet PBUH would fast regularly and never eat to his fill.
Consuming moderately would alleviate many of the issues we face both personally but also on a wider communal scale.

I was diagnosed with hyponatremia almost 15 years ago - dang me how fast time flies. I was also diagnosed with T2D. Yep, unbearable and unrelievable thirst led my husband to pester me to go to the doc and get tested for diabetes. These days, my thirst regulator, while not exactly broken, it IS quite running like a not fully flattened tire. My body has realized that the only way to let me know I need to hydrate is to give me dry lips.Yes. Dry lips. It takes a minute for me to get the clue, but at least I do. Get the clue. When I was pregnant, I was always thirsty. I would drink minimum a gallon of water a day, yet I always felt dehydrated. I would urinate every 30 minutes and it just felt like the water was not hydrating my body. I had oligohydramnios (low amniotic fluid) and was told to keep drinking pure water and no less than a gallon a day which is what I did. Nothing helped until they put an IV on me… now I understand why. Thank you.

Comes down to mineral balance and ph level, not water volume. This man is absolutely correct. Sometimes less is more. It’s great to add some natural mineral salt for ph to water. Fruit juice(pasturized) is dead sugar water with no enzymes. For hydration, fresh fruit, raw dairy, coconut water, and an occasional sip of regular water with a pinch of salt is best.

@@who8979 a pinch of salt with your glass of water to soften it for better absorption. Also, costco has organic coco-water, add it to your glass of water as well. And visualize the water hydrating you as you take slow purposeful, sips. You’ll be hydrated then i promise you.
I put a pinch of Hydrol in my water on occasion as I drink a lot of tea and coffee. A younger me would crave water and I'd drink 2 litres three to four times a day! Boy did I suffer from cramps. I'm working on cutting back on drinking so much tea and coffee as I still cramp up a lot. I drink much less water though and I can feel it. My brain and body feel sluggish a lot of the time.

I worked outside in South Carolina heat from high school to about age 40. I didn't like water, so I drank Gatorade all day. I'm pretty sure that this fact and living on fast food during those years are the reason that I've been diabetic type 2 for the last 20 plus years. Age 62 now, fixing my body with low carb, Keto and IF.

Absolutely true. There was a short time when I decided to force myself to drink upwards of 2 litres of water daily. It felt uncomfortable, I got shivers and felt cold, I got constipated, and psychologically, I got more anxious and depressed. These symptoms disappeared when I resumed consuming fluids according to my thirst.

Yeah, same here, except for the constipation (because I take magnesium). Whenever I overdo it on water, it almost always throws me out of balance and causes mild dehydration. I can literally see/feel my skin shrivel up sometimes and my face/body loses that "plumpness" as my body desperately tries to compensate for too much water.

Concerning the hydration of the body I believe it is quite personal, depending on climate, exercise and the food we eat. Somebody eating big salads and "wet" food will require less water. For example eating saulty and spicy food will require more water.
It all depends how live and what we do. The only thing we can do is watch how we feel and act accordingly.

I‘m an MD, Naturopath and Nutritionist. Best way is to drink one glass of fluoride free water before and after each meal. When you eat 70% local fruits and vegetables you need about 1.5 liter water daily.

@@Mack98421 Thanks for asking. 1500ml divided by 6 glasses is 250ml per glass. That's enough for any healthy person in any climate. Exception if the person is exercising intensively then 1800 ml is required. If the person eats an additional 70% of local fruit and vegetables, the best of all possibilities is achieved. I have sporadically tested over the years whether the claims are correct that you should drink far more than 1500 ml, around 2-3 liters a day. In any case, it was wrong. Only some kidney and heart failure should drink less than 1500 ml a day.
I think part of the issue is that so many people are drinking filtered/bottled water where all the electrolytes have been removed. Also, we've been told for all too many years how unhealthy salt in our diets is. I wish people really were told more about how important the sodium/potassium balance really is. Most of us don't come close to getting the 1.5 to 2 grams of potassium per day.

I do not give a damn for diets, as they are all biased agenda peddling rather than based upon facts, yes, even diets that are needed due to disorders and allergies.
I was told that most people are lacking magnesium and you need to supplement it.
That's why you get mineral water or well water. I've been to one of the factory of a certain bottled manufacturer here and they do actually use natural spring water and just UV blast them, no RO involved so I am sure the minerals are still in the water. The taste is different too from RO water. I also drink boiled well water from my property and I don't even have to filter it because it's so clear.
IT SHOULD BE INTRAVENOUS HYDRATION IF ONE IS SERIOUS IN ELIMINATING OBVIOUS BODY FATS, AND FATS ALSO RELY ON WATER.
For those saying "My mom is 1000 years old and only ever drinks 4 glasses of water per day...", know that health is the result of hundreds of factors, including water, diet, exercise, stress, lifestyle, where you live, etc, etc, etc. Water is just one factor, albeit a rather impactful one.

I drink a glass of water when I'm thirsty or whenever I simply feel like it. Works for me - and I'm still alive. Not everything has to be turned into a science. Just listen to your body and apply common sense.
Seems simple enough, but society is set up to keep us productive while consuming, not to pay attention to or to be in touch with our body.

I only drink water when I feel to do so and I live in a tropical region where temperature reach up to 33 c. I was told to drink water regularly but I couldn't. Now I have found the right explanation for that. THANK YOU A LOT.
Since I was a child everytime I ran or did physical work, expecially on hot sunny days, I would get dizzy and feel like I was going to pass out. I only realized when I was an adult that it was dehydration and a drink of water instantly made me feel better, even though I didn't feel thirsty at all.
So it's good to stay hydrated even if you don't feel thirsty, especially on hot days or during physically demanding work or exercise.
As a child, I rarely drank water I only drank sugary soft drinks.

The most accurate way to determine how hydrated you are is urine color and output. If the color is darker and you urinate less frequently then you should increase your fluid intake. Especially if you are excercising, just because you are not thirsty doesn't mean you are hydrated and good to go.

I think that is good but not completely accurate for all. My urine is almost always perfect, even in days I'm not fully hydrated. This is why he mentions urine _density_ toward the end of this video as a better indicative measure.
eat more salt then you will be thirstier, no one talks about how most people don't eat enough salt that why people aren't thirsty. I would aim for about 3000mg if your not active thats the global average. Every hour of sweat is 1700 mg about so you got to replace that for every hour out.

The last year I was in the army, 4 men died in a long training course due to hyponatremia. Plenty of water, but the 60+ day course involved greatly reduced sleep and food to try to simulate combat conditions. They just sat down and died. It almost happened to me training for triathlons, part way into a 20 mile run, the water I was drinking just sat in my stomach sloshing around. I made it home and passed out for more than a day. I only realized afterward how bad and haphazard my nutrition intake was. That was the old 8+ glasses a day force hydration mode.

Yes, electrolytes are just as important as water, as your neurons cannot fire without those chemicals (which includes neurons in your brain, heart, and all of your muscles). Since strenuous exercise significantly increases the amount of neuron activity, it means you'd need even more than usual.

- if it's hot and or humid, in take a bit more but not too much.
- the only time you need to take in a lot of water is when you have kidney stones.
- hotter climate dwellers should drink a little more.

You forgot about physically straight activities such as hiking. If you are on a long hike you need to regularly drink, and then follow up irregularly with salty and sugary foods and or drinks. This Is to keep you hydrated (water and electrolytes) and the sugar to keep your blood sugar from crashing.

He says fruit juice dehydrates you, but a few years ago, my mom's tennis coach gave us some articles citing research that showed that a roughly half and half mix of fruit juice and water hydrated more efficiently than plain juice or plain water. This is false, God has design everything we need to stay hydrated from water, and electrolytes from fructose! This what doctors dont want you to know. They give you fructose IV when you and dehydrated in hospital. Fruit sugar is natural

Were these studies done under a certain context? For instance, I wouldn't be shocked if Gatorade was actually more hydrating during exercise than plain water due to sugar and electrolyte depletion.
However, that fact wouldn't justify drinking it all day long. Also, population, type of exercise, and drink composition could all generate a larger difference in impact for some groups than drink vs no-drink in other groups
It should also be noted that the likes coca-cola/minute maid, welches, and other "juice" brands produce alot of drinks and put their foot on the scale of science regularly.
I'm not necessarily making any definitive claims, just that science is more complex than the ways people most often use it
Years ago when i first developed anorexia i remember chugging around 18 cups of water a day. I got so sick. My bladder was almost irreversibly damaged. Rough times

When I was a kid and had gastroenteritis, they said that drinking sport drinks could cause inflammation in your brain and be dangerous. I love that nowadays we have this wonderful information available to understand the mechanisms and avoid urban myths
Thank you for the education, Dr. Berg. I know that when my body tells me it wants a drink, the water tastes like nectar. At those times, I drink my fill and my body truly feels refreshed. I'm glad to know that I can continue to drink water like this, rather than force-drinking 8 glasses a day. I think it's important to allow my body to tell me when, since it's working correctly. I've always thought that different body sizes, types, etc required differing amounts of water to be adequately hydrated, despite what many health professionals say. And drinking more than four glasses of water a day tends to make me feel ill. Thanks Dr Berg for your insight.
imo this is true for almost anything health-wise. Everyone's bodies are so different that you can't make any rigid rules about needing "x amount of ____" because it really varies so much from person to person. Some people are so different they're practically different species

My mom’s 92 years old and never drinks more than 4 glasses of water a day. She’s extremely healthy! The trend seems to be, drink water, even if you’re not thirsty and avoid gluten. I wonder what’s next? These trends seem to be shortcuts for good health with little logic. Dear Dr. Berg says hydration happens in the cells, when they’re working right, you don’t have to over water yourself. My mom’s an example of that.

When I was pregnant at 34 years old, I was drinking a ton of water and still felt very thirsty. When I told it to my doctor, I was told to start drinking some gatoraid, but it wasn't explained to me that only drinking water isn't really good. I was just told to do it, and it did solve the problem. I believed the "drink more water" push going on at that time. (I am 51 years old now). I have lived long enough to go through lots of these stupid diet trends. Today, I stick with the simple "moderation" with everything. I drink when I am thirsty, and I drink a variety of things throughout the day. I try and keep it healthy... like cranberry juice, apple juice, tea's without caffeine, lemon water, and the like and I have been just fine with it. I even do soda's on occasion. Just mix it up. Don't over do any one thing, when it comes to food and drink. We hyper focus all the time on these diet trends. Then, later down the road we decide it wasn't good to do that, but we just stupidly move on to another one. People, just use moderation with everything. If you are that concerned with it, then get your vitamin levels checked.
Dr. Berg, I am a runner. Ran my first marathon this past December. During my training I was continually advised by different expert runners to not wait until you're thirsty to drink during the run. There reasoning is that during the race you're past dehydration if you drink when you're thirsty. What's your thoughts on this in the middle of the race?

Before your race, you should practice a hydration plan during your training. What type of drink will you consume, how much, and what signals does your body give you. Then during the race, you should stick to that plan closely, allowing for minor deviations due to factors like aid station placement, temperature on race day, or whatever. You also don't want to overconsume fluids during a race because it can lead to unwanted bathroom stops, or outright gastric distress.
Remember, running is only one part of your training plan.
So what do we all do? I've given up alcohol & sugar altogether alcohol just over a year ago and sugar 8days ago. I'm still not losing weight and I'm still diabetic? I'm finding it hard now because I want to completely be free from diabetes.
In Australia it has always been to drink two litres a day of H20 (about 8 glasses).
Only recently it has been reported by the relevant Medical authority that this does not apply anymore.
Really difficult to understand how even simple things are messed up in the first place. I am a big water drinker, in particular when it gets past those 100 degree days.
Because new tests and new areas of science are always being explored. Remember, there was a time when people didn't realize that thermometers filled with Mercury could be toxic. People to this day will still swallow tapeworms for weight loss if they get desperate enough. People didn't realize the massive doses of radiation from older televisions and computer monitors were bad for you. Besides, do you really think "big water" wants it known that you could consume LESS of their overpriced plastic leeched crap and be just fine?
Depens on what you are doing, temp, but also humidity of the air. If air humidity is high, your body cant cool well, bc most heat is extracted by the state change from liquid to gas, which then cant happen well. So you only sweat more. Which dehydrates you more, so you need to drink more.
Dry heat is much easier on the system than wet heat. For instance the US east coast is very humid usually, bc of humid air coming in from the ocean. Much easier on the west coast of the US, where humidity is usually a lot lower. Same for the Europe/Asia continent, where it is easier in western Europe.
As for Australia, it will also depend on which coast you are. Where the prevailing winds come from. Land wind is dry. Ocean wind humid.

My husband and I both love your videos. That said, he keeps telling me that YOU said I'm drinking too much water. So let me tell you my points, and I'd really appreciate your feedback. I average about 128 oz a day ( 4 x 32oz bottle ) I eat really clean, no sugar and take supplements like trace minerals. I exercise on average 30 mins a day. The water I drink is from our well and we have a water softener on our system ( salt ). I do drink a cup or two of black coffee each day but other than an occasional Kombucha or coconut water, I only drink water. I hope you will give us some feedback. What I have been pondering: Constipation can be a sign of dehydration or magnesium deficiency, the latter I'm not so sure of. So fruit juices, such as prune, and osmotic laxatives, such as magnesium citrate, work by drawing water in to the intestines. The question is, where is this water coming from? And can this make you even more dehydrated? What are other options?
Try to eat some fiber with each meal. Fruits, vegetables, legumes. Prunes are good. I suggest staying away from over the counter laxatives. They can cause a rebound effect. Stay active by minimally walking.
Sparkling water with squeeze of lemon is the best
When I look back at my childhood and college days I drank almost no water at all. Only coffee in the morning and once in a while soda. As insane as this sounds, I've had no ill effects.. now just a few cups a day is more than enough. The water companies want you to buy gallons of water each day.
I am 50 in May 2022, and drinking lots of water was a thing when I was a young child. There was even a story of a woman who drank so much water, that her body ballooned right up like a big beach ball.

@@jrstf I grew up in the city. We didn't have air conditioning and put outside every day. As an older person I drink just a common sense amount. I think those who have stories of their pancreas exploding are those who never drank water and drank alcohol often.
My mom and I were just discussing this. She was saying how when she drinks too much watch she feels sick, and I told her she need to drink something to help replenish her electrolytes.

It was one of the scariest things in my life! My problem is I am always thirsty. I am not pre-diabetic and I'm on healthy keto diet. I am going to go out and buy those test strips you recommend . I get excessively thirsty when fasting and I know it's sodium related. Soemtimes I am not hungry but will have a soup just to put salt in it. All about electrolytes, smart water or electrolytes water devices are the best. Used to have them
Take your electrolytes if youre on keto. You wont be as thirsty

My doctor told me to cut back on the water I drink! This all makes sense...41 years ago they told me no salt! I started having salt with my Keto three years ago, the edema they were worried about didn't happen!

I know how electrolyte imbalance feels. Drinking water would make my stomach burn and I started having heartburns. Craving for salt also increased. Solved easily by less water and more electrolytes by ORS.

Thinking back through the first 50 years of my life (I'm 66 now), we didn't drink even half of what the so-called experts say we should be drinking. We were fine! Didn't hear anything about dehydration unless it was a very hot summer like 1976 when the TV news advised people to drink more than usual. But no big deal was made out of it. It amuses me to see people grasping onto their water bottles like they are dying of thirst! My first job when I left school, we worked 10 hour shifts. We had three short breaks of 20 minutes each in that time and that was the only opportunity to drink something. I can't recall anyone ever passing out or being ill. This mania with water is just so odd.

This is so true. It is a fad and nothing more. As a nutrition specialist, I asked "why" and got slammed by "experts". But in the end, they never answered, and I found out on my own that it's just an opinion based on misinterpreted data. A study found that we GET 8 glasses of water a day with food and the little water we do ingest. It never said we need 8 glasses a day, ever. That fad is hurting people today.
Dr Berg, I've read that the best source of hydration comes from drinking coconut water...and I mean right out of the young green coconut, not the sugar laden cartons of coconut water you buy at the supermarket. Natural coconut water has high levels of both Potassium and Sodium. I believe this to be true as I drank the water from 2 coconuts before playing tennis in the hot sun for an hour and a half and did not feel thirsty enough to drink anything afterwards. What are your thoughts?

In the Philippines. I would be very thirsty from heat and the sun and plain water is lacking sometimes but one fresh coconut water and I feel so much better .
Yeah real coconut water from the actual young coconut may be low in sugar enough to be healthy.
I'm the worst case scenario. I lost a kidney due to a birth defect when I was a teenager. I still have the kidney, but it might as well be a water balloon. The good kidney basically shuts down when I become dehydrated. Too much acid in the tummy also will cause it stop working, and when this happens it feels like I have a kidney stone. So I pay attention to hydration. Most folks don't, and why should they? However, using me as a benchmark folks with normal plumbing can also get into some level of stress by being dehydrated whether they realize it or not. Thirst should NEVER be the measure of when to grab something to drink. By the time you get thirsty you're already in trouble. The thing is to get some fluid BEFORE your thirst mechanism kicks in. Only trial and error per person gets the balance right. And most folks just don't want to worry with that. I don't blame 'em. I wouldn't either if I didn't have to.
This is a powerful message. I’m not a good proactive water drinker, but I want to be.
I work outside. I used to drink about a gallon of water while working in the hot weather. In the afternoon I would pee more. Every once in a while I would get light headed around mid morning.
Now, I drink about 2 quarts of water in the Summer. Then 16oz-32oz of Gatorade after work. I feel much better. My pee can get dark and even brown-ish. But I really don't over analyze this because I monitor my fluid intake. I am 55 and never had a heat related problem. Force drinking a gallon of water a day is a good example of how people over-analyze things. All that water will wick the minerals out of your body, like a flood.

This is my experience but I make myself a smoothie in the morning every once in a while and i definitely feel less thirsty through out the day. Even after i eat food, i don’t feel thirsty at all. The smoothie i make has strawberries, blueberries, peaches, mango, 3 key limes squeezed in, and apple juice.
I listen to you about everything except for water. I love my distilled water in a glass. I take your electrolyte powder but I love water and it’s my favorite beverage.

Back in the late 70s, my high school football coach almost killed me with those summer double practice sessions in the blazing heat. A few water breaks with no electrolytes and I was always on the verge of heatstroke, having to practice with a pounding headache- it truly felt like hell on Earth to me. Coupled with ankle and shoulder injuries that never had time to heal, it was a miserable experience and I'm constantly reminded when the arthritis flares up.

When I was an Active Duty Marine (1998-1999 timeframe), I wound up with heat stroke during the rifle range. I had been and was up to the incident drinking water and this occurred on day 4 or 5 of the range. And then had to run a PFT about a week later. Heat Exhaustion. The doctor told me it was electrolyte dehydration. I'd been drinking bottled water and was in a desert. So water didn't help. But at that point and time the USMC didn't address electrolytes. Just pushed drink water.
Yup. I was in the Army 2002-2010, same thing. I still hear the sing-song “Drink Water!!” and us pulling out our canteens in basic. We did have sports drinks available to us when I was deployed to Iraq ‘05-‘06 though.
There is a hormone created by the body that regulates how much water the body holds. I know because my daughter had a brain tumor and is on lifetime medication because she doesn't have it. If I were to drink even six glasses a day, I'd be urinating every 30 minutes. I just don't need as much water as some people. How often (or not) one urinates should also be a clue on how much water is right for you.

It could also be because you are drinking lifeless water without electrolytes, minerals. So the water is passing through you. Or you could be getting enough water from your diet from fruits and vegetables. There are many reasons why water passes through some people. The only way to tell is to measure your hydration level as dr berg suggested.

In various circles, the common phrase is that "if one/you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated", so they push the non-stop drinking of water. Water & electrolytes are both used a great deal in those circles, to acknowledge the necessity of certain salts for staying hydrated.

Me(72yrs) and a partner(65yrs) go gold prospecting in the desert, usually in the Arizona desert. Our backpack weight is a concern. We carry 4 bottles of water and 1 bottle of electrolytes each per day. We use the electrolytes only if we 'feel' dehydrated. After seeing this, I think we will modify our strategy. thanks Dr. Berg
