This is one of the few times a video game adaptation actually influences the games. They made Kano Australian in subsequent games because he was Aussie in this. They made Johnny Cage's autograph moment into a fatality. They brought Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa back to play Shang Tsung in MK11 and it's perfect. It's just a really fun movie that managed to do some wonderful give and take with the video games. The sequel is complete dogshit unfortunately.

In a perfect world, Mortal Kombat II came out in late 1996 and brought back Linden Ashby as Johnny Cage, Bridget Wilson as Sonya, Christopher Lambert as Raiden and Robin Shou as Liu Kang. The film opens with a scene before the 1995 film where we see the Great Kung Lao played by Brandon Lee (a traditional looking Shaolin monk) who wins the tournament for Earth as Raiden rejoices until we see Shang Tsung introduce Goro. The time period looks like it's the 1800s or something. Very bizarre. However, it's here where we see Shang Tsung introduce death and the concept of fatalities into the tournament. Shang Tsung was suppose to fight Kung Lao but gets Goro to represent him instead... Lao holds his own against Goro. Then a voice over between Shang Tsung and someone else we are made privy to the fact that in case Outworld lose a match to Earth - they can immediately challenge their champion in a Winner Takes All match. We then see Shang Tsung bowing to... Shao Kahn as we cut to Shang Tsung shouting "Finish Him" to Goro to kill off the Great Kung Lao. Raiden is in absolute shock and becomes furious as we see tears well up in his eyes. Shang Tsung has just corrupted the great Shaolin tournament forever. The Story of Mortal Kombat II features a returning cast. Outworld's new warriors are represented by Shao Kahn's Second In Command and General, KINTARO. Kintaro vows to kill the man who killed Goro and is made the same way they made Goro except he is fucking muscular as hell. The forces of evil take on the winners of the last film. When Kintaro is about to kill Johnny Cage, Raiden steps in and is like - fuck this shit, this isn't happening again and just goes full on God mode and obliterates Kintaro. Shao Kahn enraged knows he can't compete against Raiden so he challenges the Great Kung Lao's ancestor - Kung Lao. Kung Lao loses and is left for dead by Kahn, Liu Kang steps in to save his cousin and Raiden bonds the trio together giving Liu Kang all the power he needs to overcome Shao Kahn as he is given the powers of the God of Fire. Liu Kang Vs. Shao Kahn is an epic fight like Goku Vs. Frieza. Liu Kang literally has to unlock his "final form" and is able to move so fast and quick that no human has ever moved like that, Kang ends up beating the shit out of Kahn and ends up throwing like 1000 kicks within two seconds that are so brutal that Kahn is not only defeated but he falls into a deep, deep coma for the rest of his life. Kang restores honor to the tournament vowing that he is not worth killing and the Great Shaolin Tournament is restored. Liu Kang and a recovering Kung Lao meet the Great Kung Lao. Kitana has a sub-plot with an evil version of herself appearing in the form of Mileena. Scorpion re-appears and is no longer bound by Shang Tsung. Sub-Zero has been resurrected as Noob Saibot and the new Sub-Zero fights for the good guys as he goes against Scorpion and the original Sub-Zero who is now Noob Saibot. The story hints that the original Sub Zero and Scorpion were resurrected by necromancy - but Shang Tsung is dead so he wasn't behind it setting up the plot for the third film with the introduction of Quan Chi... I cant believe you guys didnt acknowledge the fact that, during johny cage and scorpion's duel, scorpion goes awol, and then comes back doing a half-assed cartwheel. It's one of my favorite scenes ever.
Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa is so fuckin' good he's iconic. I think he's been brought back for at least the web series and MK11, and there's another actor imitating him in the MK1 game.
I really like the design of Sub Zero and Scorpion in this movie. I think they look pretty good and scary considering the other goofy stuff in the movie.
the fact that there is a guy out there’s who’s sole purpose in life is to make video game adaptation movies fills my heart with such bliss. he just wants to make mid-budget questionably faithful movies!!!
This movie's still a lot of fun. So excited for your reaction to Annihilation! Definitely a so-bad-it's good movie, some moments have to be seen to be believed.
Y’all should watch Highlander. That movie slaps, has Mr. Krabs as the villain, Sean Connery as a Spaniard with a Scottish accent, and the white haired weirdo from this movie as the hero of the story! Also Queen does the soundtrack. It’s the best.

It took a long time for video game movies to do better than 90s MK, and even in comparison it still holds up. It's basically Game of Death with MK characters, but that's part of the charm. And speaking as someone who saw it in the theater (yes, I'm old), that Reptile fight got the audience cheering.
My high school job was working at a movie theater when this film released. I always watched the Johnny v Scorpion match whenever I could. Such a fun film. It knew the assignment.

MORTAL KOMBAT!!! TWO!!!
I cant believe you guys didnt acknowledge the fact that, during johny cage and scorpion's duel, scorpion goes awol, and then comes back doing a half-assed cartwheel. It's one of my favorite scenes ever.
Don't worry guys, we'll get all the laughs we need when you watch the sequel 🔥
I love how much they harp and riff of Christopher Lambert’s Raiden voice when _that’s just how he talks_ haha like that’s JUST Christopher Lambert
I'm so glad you guys liked this film. Mortal Kombat is a classic of my childhood 💯
1:52 marcus: *I WANT STREET FIGHTER!!!*
**2 secs later**
**vibes with dan over mortal kombat opening theme music**
Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa is so fuckin' good he's iconic. I think he's been brought back for at least the web series and MK11, and there's another actor imitating him in the MK1 game.
2:26
"I think he's just fucking this kid up"
"That explains why I like it"
two picture shows in less than two weeks? we're FEASTING
Cosmonaut would you ever do an Indiana Jones series review? Love your content btw
Its on the list!
Two guys if you count Uwe Boll
I watched this in preparation of the new game, I had just as much fun as they had watching it. The reptile fight still goes very hard.
Marcus is getting real good with these thumbnails. I like it
Marcus: well, I know what we gotta watch next.
All of the internet: NOOOOOOOOOO!
15:45 This version of Raiden who looks and sounds like bootleg Geralt of Rivia is able to do an amazing TJ Miller impression 😂
My favorite scene was when Raiden warns Liu Kang about Goro being able to beat off 4 dudes at once
This is the first ad I’ve actually sat through in its entirety 😂😂
This movie's still a lot of fun. So excited for your reaction to Annihilation! Definitely a so-bad-it's good movie, some moments have to be seen to be believed.
"Mother! You're alive!"
“Too bad YOU, will die!”
“Jax! Oh wait that’s not Jax.”
Fucking dying, love these Niggas. Classic film.
YOOOO MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Seeing Cosmonaut recreate that Soyjack meme is priceless.
Y’all should watch Highlander. That movie slaps, has Mr. Krabs as the villain, Sean Connery as a Spaniard with a Scottish accent, and the white haired weirdo from this movie as the hero of the story! Also Queen does the soundtrack. It’s the best.
Does this mean we're gonna get all the other MK movies too?? Imagine how much better the HBO one would be if they used practical effects instead of dollar store cgi.
I’ve been waiting for this and I didn’t even know this was on the schedule
So cool seeing two picture shows so soon. They get me ROLLING everytime I watch them.
And Resident Evil is my favorite horror franchise so I’m REALLY looking forward to that. Thanks Marcus and Dan for giving me a new reason to watch TH-cam😂
The unfiltered glee about 90s cheese was the best part about this commentary
I love how instead of making a video essay and explain things about this movie, we just got to watch it together and experience everything ourselves
Honestly this movie will always a special place in my heart, no matter how many times I've watched it
Being a huge MK fan, this video made me so damn happy. Thank you so much
For 1995, this was a FRIKKIN masterpiece.
I can’t explain how happy it made me to watch Marcus enjoy this movie it meant so much to me as a kid and I LOVE seeing someone else enjoy it as an adult
I love it when the souls pop out of the ground like they are Destiny's Child at the Super Bowl.
This is one of the best video game movies from the 90s
Two picture shows in two weeks? Sweet
I've never seen this movie, but I've seen the Knox's Corner dub so many times all I can think of is the lines from that.
"Happy birthday to you!"
Hearing you say "this movie is pretty good for what it's trying to be" has validated years of loving this movie since i watched it as an 8 year old.
This is phenomenal. I grew up with this movie too and it's iconic, I got all the warm and fuzzies seeing Marcus love it. Also please yes we need a resident evil watch series. Yeeeeeeesss.
Gotta say this is one of the most interesting sponsorships I've heard of on a whim! Won't be getting one but an unexpected neat idea
I can't believe Marcus somehow managed to sit out 30 years of this goofy franchise and only start enjoying the movie now.
It took a long time for video game movies to do better than 90s MK, and even in comparison it still holds up. It's basically Game of Death with MK characters, but that's part of the charm. And speaking as someone who saw it in the theater (yes, I'm old), that Reptile fight got the audience cheering.
YESSSS. FUCK YES. Cosmonaut Picture Show is the best, more 90s shlock!!! Holy shit this is so good.
Love ur work man
My high school job was working at a movie theater when this film released. I always watched the Johnny v Scorpion match whenever I could. Such a fun film. It knew the assignment.
Perfect timing, I was binge-watching the Picture show playlist last night. 🎉🎉
I’m a snob typically when it comes to movies but I can’t help but love this movie. My dad and I saw it 4 times in the theater.
