You know what else this would need? Cosmetics. The X Men are like the drippiest superhero team in existence. Unlockable costumes is a requirement. Yellow spandex for Cyclops.
YESSSSS! You can get costumes that match for the whole team as well as classic and new unique costumes for every character. ( Needless to say some of the costumes should COMPLETELY change the aesthetic of the characters not just a palate swap and a scarf)
If your Mutant power is mimicking the powers of others around you just imagine how cute the Rogue romance would be. Her eating herself up inside that your power reminds her how dangerous she is and how lonely it makes her, but with your X-Factor being so high with her and your power mimicking hers so much they could end up cancelling each other out and she'd finally have a person she cares about that she could touch without hurting! I want this, I want this game now, how dare you
Yes but what really happened is it becomes a negative feedback loop, power draining power exponentially until all that's left are two shriveled corpses embracing each other desperately
14:20 toad being like the "lame kid" that doesn't really have any friends only to join your party and get the best friend group ever is honestly a kickass idea
“Okay guys so what you are gonna want to do is pick Toad,Magik, and Iceman. Use Toad’s tongue and Magik’s portals to move enemies away, and Iceman to stop them from getting too close along with some Toad slime traps. Now if you spent enough time in shop class with Forge you can use your firearms to pick them off with them never even touching you.”
I know it was mostly a joke bit, but deadpool as the merchant/shopkeeper would be so good. It fits so well. I can almost imagine it. So many players would enter and exit just to hear him. And he'd have a bit at the end that goes something along the lines of "hey, scram already. i only got so many voice lines." or something more deadpool-y
A voice clip by Ryan plays after so many encounters on the same day, "You happy now, you got to hear the celebrity voice cameo. But it ain't gonna be cheap, buddy." Then the prices for all items go up for the rest of the semester or quarter of the year.
I know Wolverine works as a danger room couch, but he could also teach history. He’s one of the oldest mutants in the school. Also, this seems obvious, Colossus should be the art teacher.
I could just imagine him talking about his own experiences with no text books. Just a slide show and lectures and notes. And if anyone corrects him he’ll just go in depth about the bs he went through and how some facts got smudged over time
I don't think Wolverine would be very comfortable to sit on personally, and the danger room is hardly the place to have a couch. I like the history teacher angle though but we should keep him as a coach instead of a couch.
@@donovanfaust3227 I just wanted you to know that I'm high right now and "danger room couch" comment made so little sense to me that I thought I was going insane for not understanding what a danger room couch is while everyone else seems to and it wasn't until I read your reply that I realized the typo. thank you
Daphne is a bit ditzy. I don't want Jean Grey to be ditzy. She already has the negative rep of being the weakest thanks to her bad portrayal of always fainting in the TAS cartoons.
I started thinking about the implications of the game and realized this bug could be a feature. Like, how disturbing would it be for, like, Darwin to approach you and strike up a deep friendship with you, then you try to romance him and he ends up guiltily admitting that he's been spending time with you because the other kids, or maybe the faculty, have been encouraging him to because they think you having his powers would make you a better fighter. Something at some point makes you realize that any relationship you have probably had selfish motives behind it. You're in a relationship with Kitty Pride and now you have to wonder if she initially asked you out because the professor was planning a stealth mission.
Really fucked up that the MC is essentially being pimped out to become a powerful hero. Like it's so out of line but it feels like something Professor X would be forced to do. Would he rather let one of his students live a life that's as normal as possible or groom him into becoming a savior to save mutantkind from extinction?
So, a mutant whose ability is *literally* the power of friendship? I actually quite like that idea. Maybe if you max out their relationship with a villain (that increases through in-combat quipping), you can get them to switch sides and join the X-Men.
Right? Like Marcus said, the social gameplay sounds amazing and deep. But then his ideas for the combat sound incredible as well. Especially the combo moves-it honors the Xmen. I need this game.
Do not have your character's powers copycat other members of the team like in X-Men Destiny. It made that game unplayable for me. I have faith that we'll get some decent games with the '97 comeback and MCU movies in the future. X-Men Legends 2 ftw.
This. His Evo characterisation is basically exactly what Marcus was talking about, just vaguely less 'jock'. The insertion of the Scott/Jean/Rogue triangle, as much as we all knew how it would end, was interesting too.
Cyclops is not boring in the 616 he just has a lot of baggage. I am certain if he went to therapy as child or teenager instead of being an X-Man full time he would be a lot better. He goes to therapy in my story/marvel universe and comes out as better person for it
I feel like this is the weirdest breath of fresh air in a minute, just binged a ton of reviews and picture shows but this is the first outside content in a while, it’s glorious
X-men Legends but in the style of God Of War Ragnarok (over the shoulder) and a deeper character leveling system /skill tree + a semi-open world like Spiderman 2 (PS5).
Making Iceman a teacher in a series where almost everybody is aged down would be quite the subversion. Considering he's almost always depicted as a younger mutant
The worst part about this curse is that people are adding their thoughts to the pile and vicariously making it worse the longer that this video stays up Well played, Marcus
You should make this a series. Just random ideas of "could be" games or even movies/shows that you have talked about on stream or friends in your personal life. That is such a fun idea and cool concept. 😃
i’d like to imagine while you’re upping your relationship with wolverine, an already daunting task since it requires specific high stats, you become a higher target for Deadpool to kill. Maybe he attacks you at random points in the game and you’re left by yourself to fight him. and he’s like, actually a challenge. maybe logan could chime in to help once you reach a closer relationship status with him. i’d also like to think if deadpool were the merchant, he’d be really passive-aggressive if your character is with wolverine. like, if you buy some equipment Deadpool would say some smart ass remark like: “yeah, yeah, good choice, definitely gonna need it soon! what? i didn’t say anything…” and this game has to have cameo side quests right? like, i need a spider-man and wolverine side quest where they get on each other’s nerves. and maybe after you finish the spider-man quest, you see a subtle easter egg of peter parker publishing pro-mutant pictures for the daily bugle, improving mutant-social image. screw you marcus for making me have fun dreaming of this shit for a non-existent game :)
Imagine if there are like secret questlines that are unlocked when you reach a certain level of x-factor with certain people. Have a certain x-factor with Quicksilver and you can learn a little and maybe even meet Wanda. A high X-factor with Rogue and Nightcrawler follows a storyline where they a have a sort of mutual friend, proceed further and if you make the right choices and get on their good side, you develop a hidden X-factor with Mystique. Maybe followed by a brief encounter with Destiny who might hint towards future questlines with other characters.
The last thing about the psychic character that can see the dialogue options, I feel that if that was a thing, there could be a little dialogue when you hover over one of the options. Let’s say you hover over a flirty option and then they respond before you even pick it with something appropriate to their character. Let’s say you talk with Jean grey and hover over a more sad dialogue option she gives you some positive vibes
If you avoid hovering over the options all the time they'll chide you for being distant and keeping your mind blank mid-conversation to protect yourself If you keep going between different options they'll remark on you being conflicted and indecisive You have no choice but to quickly and authentically move through their conversations I hate this idea and I love it
TBH this idea was probably the most innovative gameplay thing I've heard in a LONG time, and you should just focus on pitching a game with THAT first. Nobody gets to make their dream project on the FIRST go. Well, mostly. Look at all the heavy hitters' first games... Marathon (ironic), Crash Bandicoot (also ironic bc it's like a thing again?), FromSoftware made like King's Field and then a million AC games before Demon's Souls... Final Fantasy is named as such bc they thought it was their last game, and now we're up to 16 plus a million spin-off things and remake / remasters. Just food for thought 😃
You had us sold at "everyone is bisexual" and we can make Emma Frost our girlfriend (also the sped up 'toxic' violin over Rogue's ass 💀 every single time 😂😭)
I literally just started reading X-Men comics because of you and I can’t describe to you the emotional rollercoaster of “oh my god, new Cosmonaut X-Men video! What are the odds!” to “this video was created specifically to haunt me as a punishment for making everyone in my life hear about nothing but the X-Men for days”
There are so many of these elements that are alive and well in Marvel's Midnight Suns. It isn't exclusively x-men, but there are: companionship mechanics, combo attacks, an interesting combat system that lets you set up attacks between other heroes, and so much more. That game came out less than a year ago and it's so insane that it just didn't get the love it needed. It's probably because it's a tactical game, that's probably it
It's mostly just dependent on who you talk to in the game. A lot of avengers in the game are written with Whedonisms at the forefront. Although, the fact that any dialog in a firaxis game is good at all is an achievement in itself
@roviH I'd consider it more campy than bad, personally. Characters like Blade and Wolverine talking about how cool you are or how comfortable they are opening up to you is schmaltzy, but if you go into the game seeing it as like half tactical turn based combat, half dating simulator, the dialogue is easier to laugh with rather than laugh at. Plus Michael Jai White as Blade giving those kinda lines is awesome. Dy-no-mite, Dy-no-mite.
X-Men Legends is a super underrated game. I think there's a lot of cool details, like how if you level up your strength your character can pick up and throw bigger objects in the environment. Or how most of your characters have powers that work the way you expect them to, like, some people can just fly, even if that means they can skip huge areas. Also The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants are at their absolute gooniest. Game was just fun as hell.
Also google Marvel Ultimate Alliance mods. The PC version can be freely (and legally) downloaded. Normally the roster of characters is decent, but people have made mods to add literally everyone from the Marvel Universe, even up to modern Krakoan era. Extremely refreshing and scratches that itch for a modern X-men RPG.
Prof X could be the game's "handicap" mechanic. If you've been struggling with the dungeon sections, he'll find you to give you some guidance, which boosts your stat gains for next day or so.
After the Midnight Suns game made Magik so cool and romance-worthy only to reveal you can only befriend each character, I would love to see her included as romancable character.
I'm glad that I'm not alone in feeling like Magik's route feels distinct from the others. Friendships with Doctor Strange, Iron Man, or Spider-Man feel very friendly but wholly platonic, but there's a genuinely keen intimacy with Magik that isn't there for the others. Firaxis pls gib romance DLC
I agree. I got the sense form early interviews that Firaxis maybe wanted to include romance but Marvel said no, which makes me wonder if maybe they had already been working on Magik's romance before they got that note and just left it as-is.
Problem with Magik is that even in comics for god sake 40+ years of her character history, she has ZERO romance. Zero as a 15 years old teen. Zero as a hot 20+ years old chick
A lot of what you described was kind of done in Midnight Suns recently. Not 1-to-1 but I still really enjoyed the parts you described that was used in that game (like friendship levels and going on missions and choosing a team), and I know a lot of that community would really like an X-Men sequel (since half the characters are already mutants), so you're definitely not alone there. I especially would like if the social role you described played a larger role than it does in Midnight Suns and being able to build deeper bonds than just "oh we're close friends now" would be really nice. Also for anyone reading this who hasn't heard of Midnight Suns take a look at it, it's a very cool game and I'm sad not many people know about it. But also make an X-Men version like Marcus described Fireaxis please.
This video actually got me thinking "oh yeah, I wanted to try midnight suns." It was on sale and basically every free moment of the past 2 weeks has been spent playing it
I was thinking this. 😂 It’s pretty close. I personally loved Midnight suns. I liked getting close to Magik and her opening up to me. I would love to be able to romance them. I think Midnight Suns deserves more recognition. It was a really fun game.
7:19 Barely 1/3 into the video and I already love this idea. It's amazing how easily the Persona formula transplants itself onto the Xavier Institute. Even having your character be the mutant equivalent to a "Wild Card" feels so perfectly on-brand. I think X-Men Destiny tried to do something like this, but it just didn't work there because the protagonists were...we'll generously say 'uninspired', and there was no slice-of-life element to really forge the X-Factor (a new favorite term of mine, thanks for that!). SUPER happy you made clear that everyone in the game would be bi. While I like having exclusively "gay" or "straight" options because it's slightly more realistic, I am not playing an X-Men RPG for the realism. I'm gonna get my homo superior ass a blue fuzzy boyfriend and canon can't stop me. ^_^ On the subject of the characters: *Cyclops* : is not a jock, technically. At his best, he's a Boy Scout. Even as a teenager, he coordinates his sock drawer for fun, keeps a copy of Sun Tzu's The Art Of War by his bed, and makes battle plans and strategies in his sleep. If he couldn't be the DM in a game of D&D, he'd be a fighter or paladin with a stupid high INT score and criminally low CHA. That's not to say he's a bad character (questionable life choices notwithstanding) but he's definitely a lot more early-Scooby "trapper" Fred than modern-era "Ken doll" Fred. His brother Havok, on the other hand? Now THAT is a himbo. Just ask Madelyne Pryor >:) You could also put Colossus in the student body for that good himbo energy. He is an artist, and has the soul of a poet, but he's not terribly eloquent since English is his second language. *Wolverine* : X-Men Evolution made the right call...or half of it anyway. Logan isn't really the order-barking type; again, that's Scott. Logan is a rebel, a James Dean character, and he's been thrust into a position of responsibility. And out of the faculty of the Institute, if Logan is on staff, he will be the easiest person to get close to, as long as you're not a jerk. That said, you should totally get the option to be a jerk and mouth off to him for a bonus boss fight (you could also get this as a bonus if he likes you enough and you say you want a scrap). also, a big YAS to the return of my 5'3" short king!!! *Storm* : This is my favorite fictional character of all time, and I would probably cry if I bought this game and she were not playable. The irony is, out of all the X-Men, she's one of only three who've been canonically, physically de-aged at least twice (the others being Charles and Erik). I could totally see her as a student, but specifically an eco-activist student, a Social Justice Warrior in the most positive sense of the term (yes, the X-Men are woke-ass SJWs, they've always been that way and people are deluding themselves if they think otherwise, and I LOVE THAT ABOUT THEM). Engaging with Ororo on the level of those causes would be a great way to unlock new side quests and get both a good X-Factor bond and an asbolutely BROKEN power set. To me, in a lot of ways, Storm IS the X-Men. *Jean Grey* : All the stuff you said about her, being the "good student" like P5's Makoto and having a lot of empathy, is completely true and why I love her. That said, Jean's got more to her than just nearly dying. I would argue the more compelling part is her hidden id. She stays proper and demure and "good" because she's constantly repressing all the urges and desires everyone else has, because she's one of the strongest mutants alive. Jean is powerful enough to make her every desire a reality, even without the Phoenix. It would be so easy to reach out and change the minds of every bigot on Earth, to telekinetically crack open a bank vault and help herself to whatever's inside, to basically behave exactly like Emma Frost and go full "IDGAF" mode...except Jean Grey does GAF, and so she keeps it all locked up. Her X-Factor could be about either helping her keep a lid on that by finding healthy outlets for it, or encoraging her to give in and ditch the restraints she's built around herself...opening the door for Jean to develop some very dangerous tendencies. *Nightcrawler* : Perfection. No notes. Well, just one note: Make sure he doesn't get too mopey. Kurt is great when he's warm and fun and jokey. He can be sad or bitter or dour sometimes, but those are the times when you know Things Are Bad And You Should Feel Bad, not his baseline. Otherwise, yes. Blue boyfriend material should 100% be in the game and would be a fantastic fast travel system, while also explaining why your party size is limited to 3 or 4 characters (Kurt can teleport a bunch of people a short distance, or himself and a few others a long distance, but he can't do both) *Gambit* : Remy is a thief, and I feel he would play like one. His powers are loud and flashy and explosive, sure, but he himself probably moves like Joker (the P5 one, not the clown. Or the Persona 2 one). I'd imagine there'd be quite a few places Remy's skillset, more than his powers, would come in handy. You could take him with you and get like double the gold, or be able to open unopenable chests with him in the party (or if you raise your X-Factor with him enough to get his thieving skills, not a mutant power I know, but they'd be fun as heck to have). *Rogue* : "Dolly Parton who can throw a tank at you" is my favorite description of Rogue ever and I am so stealing it. I was worried she'd be redundant, since power theft/power mimicry are kind of her main deal, but the flight/strength/toughness powerset gives her her own unique spot on the team, and frankly, I love Rogue as a short (she's only 5'6" if you discount the extra 2 feet of 80s hair) but sassy tank and bruiser. *Emma Frost* : IMO, Emma works EXTREMELY well as a teacher, but I do think there's a place for her as both the incredibly intelligent overachiever AND the Mean Girl fashionista. She could be this game's Amity Blight (of Owl House fame), and if you know anything about that show, you know how popular Amity is. You could even give her a similar conflict, about how being pressured to be perfect can crack even the hardest of diamonds (seewhatIdidthere? :D). Making her more empathetic or making her even more of a witch-with-a-B could be the core dilemma with her X-Factor, and the decision might even impact which of her powers you'd copy (make Emma more empathetic and you get better telepathy, harden her and you get her diamond skin). *Polaris* : A character who doesn't see NEARLY enough love outside of the comics. If you're going to keep Magneto as a bad guy, she should definitely be on the team so you can at least get the magnetic powerset. I could see Lorna transferring into the student body initially as a double agent, trying to find out where her father is after he was beaten (Xavier, being Xavier, knows but is not telling). Depending on the characterization of Magneto in this game, Polaris' X-Factor could play out any number of interesting ways, especially if she and the protagonist are in a relationship. Since I like a more heroic, freedom-fighter Magneto over a one-dimensional mustache-twirler, I'm more inclined to think Erik would be faster to make up with Charles if he knew his best-beloved daughter (sorry Wanda) had a significant other on the team. *X-23* : Should not be romanceable. I know you're gunning for an "everyone can be dated" feel to the game, but Laura when she first breaks out of Weapon X is a very damaged girl, still struggling to know that there's life outside the hell she was born into. If there's a time skip in the game and she becomes more like her current 'Talon' incarnation, or even when she was Wolverine II, then perhaps, but not straight out the Weapon X gate. *Magik* : The fact that you mentioned her alone makes me so happy. If she were a part of the student body? or better yet, a party member? FANTASTIC. Especially since she has such a strong tie with Limbo, and depending on the plot of the game, excursions to Limbo could be this game's equivalent to trips to Tartarus, the Midnight Channel, or Mementos. It could make her EXTREMELY important to the plot of the game, and give her a much cooler debut into the world of X-Men video games than whatever Midnight Sons tried to do. Also, in my head the protagonist gets a Soulsword of their very own if she likes them enough, and that is a customization nerd's DREAM. (also she can teleport more people than Nightcrawler. Just saiyan.) I could also do write-ups on the other characters I'd want in the party - Iceman, Beast, M, Synch, Psylocke, Bishop, Cable, Moonstar, Cecilia Reyes, Jubilee, SCARLET WITCH, the list goes on forever - but I love the idea of this so very, very much. Gameplay-wise, I'm a fan of the ATB gauge in theory, but in practice I always have it set on 'Wait', because I am not fast (it's why I play turn-based RPGs). But bringing back strategic placement of enemies and allies is great, and dual and triple techs are absolute genius. Chrono Trigger is my second favorite game of all time behind Final Fantasy VII, and the engaging combat system is a big part of that! Don't worry about me being haunted. Persona is a fantastic series, and the formula of 3-5 lends itself perfectly to the X-Men, so I love this idea. Also, I'm in my 40s, the notion of a real X-Men RPG has already haunted me for longer than some TH-camrs have been alive. (X-Men Legends 1 & 2 were great, everyone should play them if they get a chance) I do hate that this game doesn't exist, but that's on Marvel and Disney, not you.
As for being able to romance almost everyone, you could have an option to try to romance multiple people, but depending on who they are, they will not accept a poly relationship. For example, perhaps Rogue and Gambit are okay with it, but Jean and Cyclops won't accept it. If you are trying to romance multiple people, they confront you and you have to choose between both of them.
I actually have a bit of an idea regarding the teachers being used in combat: Essentially make your team build have a numerical limit, that would go up as the game progresses (logic being after successful missions Xavier or Logan say "oh youve completed more missions on your own, youre clear to lead stronger squads next time"), and make the teachers super strong, but cost a lot with the additional caveat you can only bring one at a time. So as an example, lets say the team cost limit is 10, and you decide you want to bring Wolverine, Cyclops, and Phoenix but Logan bumps up your team limit to much. You can then either chose to go without him and find someone else for a full squad of 4, or take just Scott and Logan and have a risk factor in that youre down a man, but Logan can compensate for 2 characters.
How about this? Teachers could use a lot of MP/AP so they can perform far fewer strong attacks/special abilities than you and fellow student party members each night. So you can bring a teacher into a full party but bringing any more than one would be unwise because the more teachers you have, the fewer strong attacks you have. It’s like when you have a super OP Persona from the DLC *_(ahem… Izanagi-no-Okami Picaro)_* and use their strongest ability *_(Myriad Truths)_* which kills all the enemies but just used up half of your MP bar. So you have to level up before you can effectively use it. In the teachers’ case, my idea is that you can bring one teacher in at a time and slowly increase their levels/bond/x-factor with you (therefore increasing their MP or decreasing their skill cost) so they become more efficient and valuable to the party. At the start, they’re sort of like a weight on your party. But once you level them up, they’re your strongest party member. Then, picture this. Once you’ve done this with several teachers one-at-a-time, by late game, you’re facing the final dungeon with *Storm, Beast, and the Wolverine!*
I never even thought of Deadpool as a gun vendor before. That’d be hilarious to hear his insane ramblings about guns. And it’s a funny way to keep him as a D lister.
My proposal to this collective mind goblin is as follows: in the later half of the game some of Jean Grey's skills change or just outright vanish without explanation, but these are skills only unlocked with a high social link so unless you get to know Jean very closely you aren't likely to notice anything different. Then after a major story beat or so either the nameless protagonist or Scott notice something off about Jean, depending on your social link with her. She's been replaced with Madeline Pryor! Now to rescue the real Jean you need to find Mr. Sinister, cue morlocks and chimera mutants, and imply that this whole ordeal was just so Sinister can see the protags copying powers in person.
That kind of skill change swap has been done. The one in Dragon Quest XI handled it pretty well when 2 separate characters ended up combining their skill trees at the second hald of the game and then separated it again during post-game.
I have never been gaslit to mourn a cancelled video game that never existed like this well done lol. This sounds absolutely phenomenal, and it’s just so impressive how creative you guys were with ideas and fitting the puzzle pieces together.
The original X-Men Legends is the closest any game came to even a part of this idea at all, but it didn't do a social aspect nearly this deep. Still, it tried as much as it could for its time and it did let you explore the mansion and talk to a lot of the characters as well as play some flashback missions from the team's past. This game Cosmonaut thought up is something I'd play without a second thought because it sounds so much fun!
Photography side quest where you have to go to key locations and take photos of them from certain angles and then give them to Nightcrawler so that he can teleport you there, thus unlocking the fast travel. Also you have to work out the exact spot that would be safest for him to teleport to, and if you give him photos of a dodgy area he gets irritated and if you continue to do it it worsens your relationship with him until it unlocks a side quest where Kurt starts thinking that you're trying to kill him or something and you need to fix that and that can open up a potential enemies-to-lovers relationship arc idk lol (you can still romance him without all of this but this is the far more interesting route)
Great video as always and great pitch for a game! A little videogame nerd comment here: Most RPGs couldn't use the Chrono Trigger Active Combat System because that was patented by Square for nearly 20 years. I do hope it returns to other games!
I swear to god they need to start making more X-men games. Like I know we are getting Wolverine but I mean a full on X-men game. It’d be fun like some X-men mmo game since it could fit.
The profound para-social influence you've had on my life by getting me into D&D and now by haunting my brain for eternity with this game. Thank you Cosmonaut Marcus, your influence will not go unnoticed.
Marcus, did you play the two X-men Legends games from the early 2000's? The game play is surprisingly deep and customizable and it's so cool making an OP squad of Xmen to tear things up. The sequel is even better.
After playing Disco Elysium I also think there’s so much potential with writing the character you play as to truly make it feel like a “Role” Playing Game. How does your character feel about their mutant ability? If your character is basically a chameleon who only takes other people’s abilities- how do they handle that when it comes to their identity? How do other characters react to your abilities and how does your relationship change based on what you do with those people? One thing we could do is make Rogue’s ability on you specifically wear off over time the more you spend time with her- like hear me out. Metaphorically and literally you can be able to slowly allow her to actually interact with a person that won’t just straight up die when she touches them for too long- but it can only happen after you’ve had a lot of exposure to her ability and both opened up to each other. And it could culminate to a point where she realizes she can actually touch your face without completely draining you of life- and you get to see the tears of joy rush from her face from the years of just being unable to really be held or hold someone she deeply cares about… And have that depth with EVERY character- whether it be romantic, with powerful built friendships or even.. using pure distain. All depending on who you want to be and who that character really is. Not only that but based on what you do, characters can go on their own character arcs and become entirely different in the end. In one play though a character can genuinely become your enemy, in another they can become someone you deeply love. I don’t know, just an idea.
There's actually a, uh, admittedly overtly smutty game that is basically just a much hornier version of the scenario you described for Rogue, it's called Roguelike: Evolution, and features the X-Men evolution design for her. I definitely only know about it for, uh, research purposes
I also really hope the main character isn’t just a blank slate and _is_ an actual storied character, I hate it when games are written with no intended character in the specific options, just neutrally what the player might want.
@@whyiwakeup6460 oh yeah I agree- that’s why I really love Disco Elysium. You choose how the character grows- like it’s literally about choosing what kind of man you’ll be. That’s what I’d want for this game. Like everyone will have a different character by the end of the game physically and mentally.
Honestly just taking out the turn based combat and go full on stealth tactics, all out combat or something would be better for this game. Hell making it part fighting game makes more sense since the main draw should be the interactions and the story with the combat serving as fun breaks to put those bonds your making to guest test since most of the villains you'd fight wouldn't be sending armies after you sans say the Sentinals, couple of mutant hate groups and maybe a couple Weapon X facilities with clones or cyborgs but stuff with the Brotherhood or Genoshia should be all just boss fights in general. Having different gameplay options and styles could give someone the chance to play the game much differently and craft a more personal experience then just turn based combat. Maybe something like Shattered Dimensions where each Spider Man had their own gameplay gimmicks but even more so to give a more unique feel since just throwing random mooks at you would feel cheap. Some of the fights should be like that or maybe even musou game combat but more should feel like genuine action combat, maybe even in the style of Asura's Wrath.
I think for party selection for the combat part, 5 characters would work best. You, three other student characters, and 1 teacher character present as the chaperone for these dangerous field trip. The teacher characters also start out stronger than the student characters but level up less, diegetically representing their having more experience as X-Men, while also game-play wise giving you a powerful character if you need it but incentivizing you to focus on growing the students to become ultimately more powerful (similar dynamic to pre-promoted older characters you get in Fire Emblem) Also, I love the combo attack idea you presented, it's basically the Fusion Attack from Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 and more games should have it
That's a really cool idea! And you could do a thing later in the game where the school is attacked and the teachers aretaken out of commission so now the students are on their own for a mission.
Just in general we need a superhero JRPG. Building a team, leveling them up, fighting big bosses, exploring a world. Many superhero genres would work with the JRPG genre it’s crazy. Plus it would be a breath of fresh air from the fantasy genre the JRPGs are always associated with
This my is favorite video from you in a while. Seeing you talk about some fantasy of yours with so much love is just awesome. Really hope this game becomes a reality someday man.
I've wanted a good X-Men RPG forever. And I love your ideas, especially incorporating Chrono Trigger-esque combat mechanics. There's so much fun potential there!
You could spend the first half getting a techer going in missions with you. You know, an overleveled, well-suited character for the dungeon. And then when the story advances, the students get into a dangerous situation with no teacher and then they become actual X-Men.
Don’t think I’ve seen this much positive energy towards Emma Frost ever (in the comics or in real life). It’s really nice to see ❤ Also it’s been a long week and “help me make Emma Frost my girlfriend!” gave me a real belly laugh, thank you for that.
This sounds fucking awesome! The X-Men seem really cool, and having a game like this would finally give me the chance to really fall in love with these characters and their stories for myself.
@@shannyn7404the marvel unlimited app is a really good option. Ideally you should support your locals. But if you can’t this is a great option to read comics!
This concept is essentially what the Marvel Midnight Sons game wanted to be, and that might be a funny game to scratch this oddly specific itch. (Also I’m totally making an X-Men themed TTRPG to make my players play through)
Just an idea: what if to get the teachers to be party members you need to max out their X-Factor? So if you want Wolverine to be in your party, you gotta work for it. It's like a reward! edit: A few more ideas! 1) I think the PC's X-Man codename should be Bond. Because they copy the powers of mutants they develop a close *bond* with. Eh? Eh?! Also it sounds like a regular name, so you can have characters use it in normal conversation without it sounding too weird. 2) In the same vein as the Law-Chaos alignment system in the SMT main series, what if this X-Men game had a similar alignment system but it was based off the philosophies of Professor X and Magneto? I call it the Equality-Superiority Alignment System. On one hand you got Equality, which is what Professor X tries to preach and many of the actions would focus on trying to better mutant-human relations. Then the Neutral alignment in which is more focused on personal freedom and more isolationist actions. And finally Superiority, which is the Magneto school of thought and choices tend to focus on pushing for mutant superiority, though not necessarily evil in nature (think Renegade options from Mass Effect).
Some of this game exists, or at least existed. X-Men Legends 1 and 2 had some of these elements to an extent, and the gameplay was really solid (and served as the basis for Marvel Ultimate Alliance) Pretty surprised it wasn’t mentioned in the beginning
I've been looking for a comment like this for a while. I felt like I was the only one who remembered them for a quick minute. He's describing X-Men Legends with a social aspect, essentially. Those games were fantastic. I'd love a reboot like this.
@@mikealgiers7852 a lot of the detractors for the game expected something else entirely. Its pretty enjoyable across most of the core gameplay elements and the writing really warms up further in. I personally love the downtime between missions to chat and do activities with the cast
The only issue I see is if you're building your character to be Psylocke (for example) and you have hang around her to fight like her...then basically you have two Psylocke's in your party which make it redundant. If the flip side is "well you gain Psylocke's ability in the social aspect, but you can use who ever you want in your party", well... I love Psylocke, that's why I chose to be like her. Now I can't use her in my party because I'm basically replacing her. I think a way to fix this is the teacher/student system. You choose your trains from the teachers, but party with the students. A teacher can dungeon dive with you, but in a non-playable sort of way that RPGs like to do (like a companion or escort). There are enough mutants that have similar powersets that you can build anyone you want to, so you don't have to worry about being locked out of a power-tree because so-and-so is a either a teacher or a student. Just my thought...on a game that will never happen.
Here is an easy fix. You get her ability, but you can select if you would use it or not. I don't like Cyclops, so I bond with him, get his laser and never call him to be in my party.
I honestly don’t like the “power contamination” thing. It’s tooo much like Rogue and I don’t like feeling like a godlike chosen one in games. but I was also considering similar issues to yours. There should be skill trees and players should have lots of customization of the main character mutant OR I would make an MC that has voice lines, one set of powers, and a bangin’ voice actor. The copy powers we could get should be bonuses to specific attributes, team attacks, special passives, or tweaks to our own powers - not simply absorbing other mutants powers. For example, let’s say your MC has super strength. Logan’s skill enhancements would involve cqc, fastball special, critical percentage, health regen, just to name a few. BUT let’s say you want heath regen and no cqc. You wanna be a tank. You don’t have to take the crit or cqc bonus because there’s limited power slots. Then you could take psychic resistance from Emma Frost or something. Energy resistance from Cyclops etc. The abilities would be based off of the mutants, not whole sale copying them.
Honestly I had this exact idea of how awesome a Persona style superhero game would be after playing Spdier-Man PS4 and Persona 5 back to back and realizing how engaging a gameplay system having to choose between finishing your homework or going out to stop crime could be and I'm darn happy to finally see someone put into words that idea I had back then
A game like this would definitely benefit from something like the Nemesis system from the Middle-Earth games, where certain mutants might defect between the X-men and the Brotherhood depending on the personal relationships they have with you and other mutant classmates.
Emma Frost was my first-ever fictional character crush; seeing such a powerful comic book woman express her sexuality while still being a BAMF really _spoke_ to young Amber (in multiple ways 😊). Her X-Factor enhancement would definitely increase your confidence stat in the RPG, if not as a side-effect of her main stat bonus. Dating her would also be a 15+ year dream come true! 😅 Cosmonaut, you make me angry this game does not exist. Thank you!
10:15 What if a mechanic for Jean Grey specifically was, the more you level up her X-Factor, the more likely it is she might die in the story? And the lower the X-Factor, the more likely she lives? Imagine how stressful it would be, whether in or out of combat, if you’re like on X-Factor 9/10, or 10/10 with Jean, and one wrong mistake or dialogue option on YOUR behalf could cause her to die. It would get to the point where you might have to use a guide to find the right dialogue options to make her live by endgame, if you don’t want to risk a bad dialogue option to kill her.
I love this idea. I've been reading of lot of the more recent X-Men and New Mutants and this idea will haunt for forever. I personally would love to see some more New Mutants as party members just so those characters could get just as much love as the original X-Men.
It would be cool if the OG members (Scott, Jean, Bobby, Beast, Angel, plus Storm), were the teachers and youre classmates are the characters who are typically portrayed as younger.
Sooo I’m going into game development and have been on the lookout for a indie game idea for my first game. While this a little ambitious for a first game I’m adding this to my list of future game ideas. I will see this game made.
You're right. I hate you for this. I think it would be interesting to make relationships multilayered too, with some of the complications that come from certain powers. Example, she never was an X-Men and even her status as a mutant is a bit wishy washy, but Jennifer Takeda aka Hazmat has like really dangerous radioactive powers so she has to wear a hazmat suit and all times and can't really be with 99% of people. So like, you wanna romance her you also have to have a good relationship with another character who helps you make you immune to her powers.
Marcus. Have you played X-Men Legends? It's like, KIND of what you've described. They're pretty good beat-em up with RPG elements with leveling, where you get a roster of 4 X-men you can swap between, you're based in the X-Mansion or various X-Men locations, they have tons of Easter Eggs, and honestly it's probably the closest you'll find currently to an X-Men game you've described. They've got X-Men Legends, X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, and then Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance II were of the same vein/system. It's the closest I've experienced to capturing the feeling of being a child of the atom. Plus I'm sure you'll love the voice acting. Highly recommend if you haven't played them!
THANK YOU. I felt like I was going insane because he kept describing this hypothetical game and it's literally just X-Men Legends. If they ever made an X-Men Legends III, I think the social stuff can be incorporated
Random idea. But the DLC could be a flashback where you play as Professor X meeting Magneto for the first time, and the two team up to go fight Nazi doctors kidnapping and experimenting on mutants. The final boss being Mr. Sinister, of course.
I think Wolverine being a history teacher would be a nice curveball, cause he would be expected to be PE instructor or something along those lines. Him teaching the subject makes total sense since he's atleast 200 years old. It would also serve to help flesh out his character by talking to the students (and us for that matter) about his time during major conflicts like WW1, WW2, etc.
I actually had this same idea but with Spider-Man. Imagine trying to balance your social life with your superhero life just like Peter Parker does. He even has a built in cast of friends and like 50 different potential love interests to date. It’d be great
Man, Spider-Man gets like two good games and now people are wanted to shut him down? Give the dude a break, he struggled through years upon years of shit games before he got some solid ones.
The day night cycle and strong focus on social life reminds me of midnight suns. With the day cycle being some type of mission and night being time to hangout and strengthen bonds which effects the gameplay through new moves and cosmetics. The addition of constant reward and growth of my team every night after a mission kept the loop fun and addicting. I think something like that with X-men with a more action oriented system like ultimate alliance would be an awesome game!
Man was so down bad for Emma Frost he went and developed a whole-ass RPG from scratch.
Can't even blame him
Not only that but a 20-min TED talk to sell us into it. If that's not the ultimate thirst, I don't know what is.

Maybe it didn't occur to you before because the personalities don't match at all.
The Professor X is a jerk season. I like it
Every game needs to be seasoned with emotion
Because we're not being exploited enough irl
Really fucked up that the MC is essentially being pimped out to become a powerful hero. Like it's so out of line but it feels like something Professor X would be forced to do. Do not have your character's powers copycat other members of the team like in X-Men Destiny. It made that game unplayable for me. I have faith that we'll get some decent games with the '97 comeback and MCU movies in the future. X-Men Legends 2 ftw.

and this game has to have cameo side quests right? like, i need a spider-man and wolverine side quest where they get on each other’s nerves. and maybe after you finish the spider-man quest, you see a subtle easter egg of peter parker publishing pro-mutant pictures for the daily bugle, improving mutant-social image.

I love the idea of Deadpool being a super difficult secret boss battle akin to the velvet room attendants in Persona
Now this guys cookin
The last thing about the psychic character that can see the dialogue options, I feel that if that was a thing, there could be a little dialogue when you hover over one of the options. Let’s say you hover over a flirty option and then they respond before you even pick it with something appropriate to their character. Let’s say you talk with Jean grey and hover over a more sad dialogue option she gives you some positive vibes
If you avoid hovering over the options all the time they'll chide you for being distant and keeping your mind blank mid-conversation to protect yourself
If you keep going between different options they'll remark on you being conflicted and indecisive
You have no choice but to quickly and authentically move through their conversations
I hate this idea and I love it
And if you have enough psychic power you can catch them off guard with what you say making them like you more or something
Or if you hover over the romance option and you have low x-Factor with them, they could shake their heads but if it's high they'll smile at you
TBH this idea was probably the most innovative gameplay thing I've heard in a LONG time, and you should just focus on pitching a game with THAT first. Just food for thought 😃
and if the Player is psychic themselves the dialogue could more meta and weird.

It's probably because it's a tactical game, that's probably it
THIS!!
The only reason I haven't tried it out is because I kept hearing about its writing not being very good despite the game featuring lots of dialogue.

Dude yes! I have fond memories of playing Xmen legends 2 growing up. Played it earlier this year, still holds up!
X-Men Legends ran so Marvel Ultimate Alliance could walk
This is it, both are the best x-men games out there and probably one of the best superhero games ever.
That game was my shit back in the day, brutally hard for a 10 year old though. I was stuck on the first boss for what felt like an eternity
Prof X could be the game's "handicap" mechanic. If you've been struggling with the dungeon sections, he'll find you to give you some guidance, which boosts your stat gains for next day or so.
Emphasis on the handicap part eh
After the Midnight Suns game made Magik so cool and romance-worthy only to reveal you can only befriend each character, I would love to see her included as romancable character.
I'm glad that I'm not alone in feeling like Magik's route feels distinct from the others. Friendships with Doctor Strange, Iron Man, or Spider-Man feel very friendly but wholly platonic, but there's a genuinely keen intimacy with Magik that isn't there for the others. Firaxis pls gib romance DLC
I agree with you so much! That game made me into a Magik fan, and I've since looked into her in the comics and have not been disappointed.
Zero as a hot 20+ years old chick
she fell like a bisexuel girl for me
A lot of what you described was kind of done in Midnight Suns recently.
I thought the same thing, this is a slightly tweaked Midnight Suns
Right, wanting a new Marvel game but ignoring the latest Marvel game with multiple X-Men and RPG elements is wild
This video actually got me thinking "oh yeah, I wanted to try midnight suns." It was on sale and basically every free moment of the past 2 weeks has been spent playing it
Wasn’t there literally a planned, but scrapped dating mechanic for that game??
I was thinking this. 😂 It’s pretty close. I personally loved Midnight suns. I liked getting close to Magik and her opening up to me. I would love to be able to romance them. I think Midnight Suns deserves more recognition. It was a really fun game.
What a nice wholesome video of him just talking about something he can’t really get sick of and likes.
Yes,that last time we had a wholesome video little to no complaints was...the lord of the rings? So nearly 7 months ago half a year.
On the subject of the characters:
*Cyclops* : is not a jock, technically.
Just ask Madelyne Pryor >:)
You could also put Colossus in the student body for that good himbo energy.
Blue boyfriend material should 100% be in the game and would be a fantastic fast travel system, while also explaining why your party size is limited to 3 or 4 characters (Kurt can teleport a bunch of people a short distance, or himself and a few others a long distance, but he can't do both)
*Gambit* : Remy is a thief, and I feel he would play like one.
Just saiyan.)
I could also do write-ups on the other characters I'd want in the party - Iceman, Beast, M, Synch, Psylocke, Bishop, Cable, Moonstar, Cecilia Reyes, Jubilee, SCARLET WITCH, the list goes on forever - but I love the idea of this so very, very much.
(X-Men Legends 1 & 2 were great, everyone should play them if they get a chance)
I do hate that this game doesn't exist, but that's on Marvel and Disney, not you.
…your username seems familiar…do I know u from somewhere??
Marcus, you should make more videos like this, just you pitching us an idea you had or just you talking about something you like.
These are always my favorites
Elon really killed Twitter to prevent this game from happening
@TrivedijiGamesIt's alive, not sure about well though
Apart from the character creation aspect, you've described X-Men legends.
Oh I thought you were gonna mention the Phoenix Force lol
That kind of skill change swap has been done. The one in Dragon Quest XI handled it pretty well when 2 separate characters ended up combining their skill trees at the second hald of the game and then separated it again during post-game.
I have never been gaslit to mourn a cancelled video game that never existed like this well done lol.
This sounds absolutely phenomenal, and it’s just so impressive how creative you guys were with ideas and fitting the puzzle pieces together.
Marcus literally describe Baldur's Gate 3 but X-Men and honestly I want this to be an actual thing now.
Amen!
A little videogame nerd comment here:
Most RPGs couldn't use the Chrono Trigger Active Combat System because that was patented by Square for nearly 20 years. I do hope it returns to other games!
I think this might just be Midnight Suns, but swapping chrono trigger gameplay for xcom
It's crazy how much like Midnight Suns this is, I'm shocked you haven't heard of it? Because this is so much like it, even down to the combat.
I was thinking the same thing as I watched this.
Marketing for that game was pretty bad, like I literally never heard of it until the day it came out.

No role modelz
Marcus, did you play the two X-men Legends games from the early 2000's?
The game play is surprisingly deep and customizable and it's so cool making an OP squad of Xmen to tear things up. The sequel is even better.
Rented both of those and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 as a kid. Loved 'em.
I thought thats what this video was gonna touch on but Those games were my childhood and I still desperately wish they would remaster them!!
Those games were so good. My aunt bought me the second one when I was really sick as a young teen, spend days in bed just playing it. So goooood
Legitimately the best X-Men games
Unfortunately they haven’t been updated for modern consoles yet
And it could culminate to a point where she realizes she can actually touch your face without completely draining you of life- and you get to see the tears of joy rush from her face from the years of just being unable to really be held or hold someone she deeply cares about…
And have that depth with EVERY character- whether it be romantic, with powerful built friendships or even.. using pure distain.
@@chimedemon exactly :)
The teacher characters also start out stronger than the student characters but level up less, diegetically representing their having more experience as X-Men, while also game-play wise giving you a powerful character if you need it but incentivizing you to focus on growing the students to become ultimately more powerful (similar dynamic to pre-promoted older characters you get in Fire Emblem)
Also, I love the combo attack idea you presented, it's basically the Fusion Attack from Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 and more games should have it
good idea
Too many people. Would make the party OP.
@@Fux704no it wouldn’t, just balance the game around 5 party members.
Tons of Dungeon Crawling RPGs are based around 5 members, if not more.
That's a really cool idea! And you could do a thing later in the game where the school is attacked and the teachers aretaken out of commission so now the students are on their own for a mission.
@@velemamba260 that would be a good opportunity for growth and character development

It’s really nice to see ❤

X-Men Legends 1 and 2 had some of these elements to an extent, and the gameplay was really solid (and served as the basis for Marvel Ultimate Alliance)
Pretty surprised it wasn’t mentioned in the beginning
I've been looking for a comment like this for a while. I felt like I was the only one who remembered them for a quick minute. He's describing X-Men Legends with a social aspect, essentially. Those games were fantastic. I'd love a reboot like this.

Bruh living in a house together, social links, combo special moves, area of effect abilities, environment exploration - PLAY MIDNIGHT SUNS

Imagine something like Catherine. Except you have Peter. And you have to pick between MJ and Gwen. Or a different number of love interests.
A game like this would definitely benefit from something like the Nemesis system from the Middle-Earth games, where certain mutants might defect between the X-men and the Brotherhood depending on the personal relationships they have with you and other mutant classmates.
If X-Men were to come back in a big way I'd be very happy
I’m bummed this video isn’t doing well cause I love when Marcus gives us outside the box content. I love your videos Marcus
Cosmonaut, you make me angry this game does not exist.
It seems he's taking moreso from Ultimate where most were teenagers, X-Men is very wonky with its ages

Sooo I’m going into game development and have been on the lookout for a indie game idea for my first game. While this a little ambitious for a first game I’m adding this to my list of future game ideas. I will see this game made.
How's that first game going
You're right. I hate you for this.
I think it would be interesting to make relationships multilayered too, with some of the complications that come from certain powers.
Example, she never was an X-Men and even her status as a mutant is a bit wishy washy, but Jennifer Takeda aka Hazmat has like really dangerous radioactive powers so she has to wear a hazmat suit and all times and can't really be with 99% of people.
So like, you wanna romance her you also have to have a good relationship with another character who helps you make you immune to her powers.
You can tell Marcus wants this because not only is the game hype but this is one of his funniest videos in a long time. X-MEN RPG AGENDA UNITE 🎉
One of the greatest games I've ever played
This idea will live rent-free in my head for years to come, thanks for creating this cognitohazard Marcus!
But he doesn’t have much of his memory left though
You kinda described Midnight Suns, seriously, I know people are not keen on the card thing but it's awesome
I always thought a Mass Effect style X-Men game might also work, if you want it to be with older characters
Your ideas are awesome. Midnight Suns is really close to this vision. Just add a few more X-Men.
I actually had this same idea but with Spider-Man. Imagine trying to balance your social life with your superhero life just like Peter Parker does. He even has a built in cast of friends and like 50 different potential love interests to date. It’d be great
NO! There's is enough spidermens already
@@victor.maskalenka hush your face, there is never enough spider-man games
@@nathanielfrancis2572 Enough is enough.
Man, Spider-Man gets like two good games and now people are wanted to shut him down? Give the dude a break, he struggled through years upon years of shit games before he got some solid ones.
@@victor.maskalenkalol there’s been a bunch of Batman games in the 21st century and we still want more. Same with Spidey
I hope people start making more of these kind of videos. They so much fun!
This is just him proving that persona is so perfect that it works with everything
