Mega Man X MAVERICKS Ep. 2 - Storm Eagle (3D fan-film) - a Blender short

- It's finally here! After roughly four months, the second episode of my Mavericks series is finally complete.
"Mavericks" is my own fictional series about the events after Mega Man X.
It basically asks the question: What if all the Maverick Bosses survived? Showing their side of the events.
My plan is to create one short 2-3 minute episode for each of the eight mavericks and let all of those come together in 2 final episodes. Those will take months each, so please be patient :)
It was such a great time but also waaaaaay more work than I anticipated :D But I also learned a lot! After 1.5 years of using blender, so far this is my proudest work.
Things I learned during this process and did for the first time:
- rigging
- animating a character
- using 2D video elements
- smoke simulations (thank you embergen)
- sound composition
- optimizing scenes for low render times
- engineering mechanical wings (never again!!!)

I love the realistic style, that still retains the anime look with the eyes and designs. Wouldn't mind at all if an X movie/series took this route.

It was indeed tricky to come up with a design, that keeps the original tone and shapes but also looks kinda realistic. But with a lot of trial and error, I'm actually happy with it 😁
I would also like a movie like that. This was basically the origin of this 😊 If nobody will do that, then you have to do it yourself 🤓 But a full movie would be too much for one person.
But this will be a 10 part series, so maybe you'll be happy with what you get here 😉
Maybe it's just Storm Eagle, but I find this short incredibly badass. He goes from damaged and accepting defeat to realizing he's still got power; which means he can still fight. Then rising up with wings spread, taking flight as if he's heading back for round 2 against X.

it gets even better when you realize that Storm Eagle was canonically just a deep cover agent working against sigma to the point he died with his cover intact, X didn't know until after.
a series like this would explore those awesome plot points, such as his returning from being presumed KIA for repairs back at maverick HQ.
1:25 I love how up to this moment Storm is effectively waiting for death, but then it seems a system check completes and storm realizes his basic systems are stable and he initiates self preservation protocols. very nice touches without saying a word or showing a status screen. Nicely done.

But hey, the directors and their visions tend to alter the final product and that is where a project can fall. Let's hope they respect the original material as in these short films
Man the realism and the story portrayed without a word being said is just breathtaking.
That was my main goal. To use my limited resources to my advantage and tell a story just with the visuals and in a short amount of time :)
This is the canon story where Storm Eagle didn't explode into orbs when being defeated by X, like in the game.
Damaged but not out, Storm can still fight.

Plus many things in there I have never done before. So there was a lot of trying out and failing and troubleshooting. But in the end I learned so much! Maybe now, the next ones will be easier :D
@@DemNikoArt So that's about 6 weeks of work if done as a full-time gig. Since you probably have a day job, I would guess you spent maybe 14-20 hours a week working on this, which would push it to anywhere from 3-5 months and change. Am I right?
@@justmike3018 That's exactly right!!! 😄 I started in April so 4 months is pretty accurate. And I worked on it roughly about 2h a day. And yes I have a job. I'm a freelance graphic designer and work from home. So that gave me some flexibility to sometimes put more hours in a day into it 🙂
I will soon put up some timelapse videos up, since I recorded the whole process. Then you will see first hand what kind of endeavour this was 😁

Thank you! Yeah, especially the wings were a huge challenge! I'm not an engineer but I didn't want to cheat. They should work properly. It was a huge pain and I hope I never have to do that again 😅

Too bad. In many adaptations of the character, he's either the unwilling servant of Sigma, or even the Maverick Hunters' inside man.
@@reddits2177 I think it had been confirmed that Storm Eagle is the only Boss in X1 who was forced to serve sigma against his will, not only in the Remake is this mentioned but in other medias too. And to be fair this makes Storm Eagle an even deeper character because unlike all the others he didn't have a choice it was either join or die.

Coming from your later videos in this series, I love how much of Storm Eagle is plainly recognizable despite your stylization, it helps sell how much more broken apart the others are after their defeats, that they've fallen further than they already had when they defected

But to be honest, it's mostly because with episodes 1 & 2 I wasn't able to get that far with the design. I was still learning. That's why I kept it more simple and intact 😉
With 3 & 4 I tried a more realistic and mechanically correct approach.
But I realized that the original design needs to stay in focus. That's why I want to find a good middle ground between the design philosophy of episodes 2 and 4.
Robotic and damaged but still true to the original character.

The redesign is always a gamble. Some like the new aspects but some don't want any changes. I try to find a good middle ground ☺️

An interesting thing is that Storm Eagle technically didn't have the virus in the game. He was a very logical kind of reploid, so when he saw how powerful Sigma had become it was less a question of justice and more of survival..

Storm eagle is the few Mavericks that has honor only followed sigma because he knew he couldn’t win and so to spare the lives of his unit ! Unlike Mammoth who wasn’t even infected and just wanted to spread chaos or Mandrill who was a mindless brute who followed orders most Mavericks weren’t infected they followed sigma for personal reasons
Knowing that gives Storm Eagle's return to the fray here the vibe of _"I have fought against you, X. Now, I fight for you."_

Thanks!!! Yeah those wings almost crushed me :D That was a pain to basically engineer them, so they work properly without cheating. And I'm no engineer :D
I've never done something like that before. But now, I feel like no machine can be to complex for me :D I'm just glad that the other mavericks are kinda "easier" built. But we'll see...

Not wrong at all! 😉 I put a lot of effort into making it similar to the stage, so I was kinda hoping someone would notice it 😁 I used the original stage as a reference so there are even more elements from it in there. Maybe you'll find them 😉 But I'll probably make an Easter egg video or something 😁

Storm Eagle always struck me as the noble, dutybound and honorable soldier type. The kind who holds themselves to a loftier ideal (pardon the pun) than simply following orders. The kind that, struggling to resist the sigma virus, would command X to destroy him before he loses control completely. A lot of folks forget that these Mavericks were once Hunters and X's friends.
That's true!
He actually only joined sigma reluctantly and doesn't see the war as necessary. It was more of a survival move. But he's one of the more redeemable characters for sure. I'm trying to keep that in mind when going forward with him.

This is absolutely incredible work you've done. Considering the stage bosses have more history to them beyond what the games show us (especially as far as both official Japanese info and the manga are concerned), this is very much a welcome thing. Superb work.

Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with the history outside the games. But the core concept has so much potential that I wanted to explore things from different sides and enhance the story and ideas. There will be more cool ideas in the upcoming ones. At least in my head so far 😅 E.g. I want to explore various genres with each one. But we'll see, in the next few months... 😉
@@DemNikoArt You're very welcome. The supplemental material is always a great way to learn more about the characters beyond what the game shows. In the case of the manga, a few of the bosses are largely different in personality compared to the original SNES and PSP remake titles showed us.

@@DemNikoArt Totally. I hope you enjoy it when you get around to reading it. Iwamoto changed a few things with his storytelling, but in essence, it's still a pretty good adaptation of the game. : )

That's why I'm starting small with short episodes which will come together in one or two final episodes. So in the end, you will kinda have a short movie 😁
The amount of detail and animation on all the mechanics of a very beaten up Storm Eagle is jaw-dropping. Seriously, the attention to detail is amazing! I don't know if you need a little bit of extra motivation, but you've made my day better!

Is there actually extended material that reveals Storm Eagle survives? If so I need more of it.
Reading he was a Maverick because he felt shame of his failures is one of the more interesting motivations out of the bosses.
As far as I know not.

I like those characters and wanted to see more of them. So I came up with this idea that they all somehow survived.
I also like his story! That was my motivation to show their side of the story and not just to categorise them into good and bad.
well he did fight x twice in the first game, once on the air ship and again in sigma's palace. maybe he flew to sigmas palace to get repaired for round 2

But I also found out that there is an explanation for that: apparently these are just empty duplicate husks of them, filled with just the basic motor functions. So not the "real" ones.
@@DemNikoArt in maverick hunter x they are not empty duplicates, they are repaired by sigma and then have their personalities wiped so i dont know where you heard that

this franchise is my favorite, I started to like the first Megaman x when I was 12 years old (it was 3 years ago), and I love the psp remake, I like to observe to create something (I'm saying this because even though I don't intend to be an animator, as someone who wants to be able to write but doesn't feel prepared enough, this animation inspires me a lot); this video was not just a mere animation, it's like a love letter to the Megaman x community

You're right, canonically it's wrong what happened with death rogumer.
My thought process was basically that this is an alternate reality scenario. The mavericks didn't survive like in the series either. So with this, I thought, the location could also be changed.
But I think the main point is, that not all people are familiar with the original lore. Most people know Eagle and the airport stage. So I thought this would be more fun, to see both again as it was in the game with all those familiar elements. To set this in the power plant might have been more confusing for most.
Plus, I wanted to use the power plant for Mandrill's film and later I did 😁
In the end, it's nothing official. Just my fan fic and a what if. Like an alternate reality. So I took some liberties with the lore. If you don't like it then that's fine. I can see that 😊

I am doing this all by myself in my spare time. Those two minutes alone took me about 4 months. A full 3d movie takes even for a team of 100 people at least 2-3 years. Sorry to disappoint.
This will be a series of short episodes each about 2-3 minutes long. Those combined will create a miniseries with final 2 episodes to close the story arc.
