I just returned one to JLR Belgium after a week of testing. When they get stuck, they get very stuck. The one I had was on crossover Continentals. The clay/mud didn't care for them at all. All 4 wheels turning in low range and with centre lock. I'd have got it out old Defender style but these are expensive so wasn't going to start slamming logs under it. Luckily a gentle tug from a New Holland and we were out :) Loved every second of the 100. What a machine.
FYI, in "snow mode" the vehicle starts in 2nd gear, to compensate for low traction. It also modulated throttle input and ABS breaks. When "Terrain Response" is OFF, i.e. normal drive, the centre diff will NOT lock, no matter how hard you try. Only in special programs will it engage. Watch the centre console to confirm it's activity, If you get high centered, you can go in "super extended" mode, by holding the UP suspension button for a few seconds. That will raise the vehicle a bit more.
@@AndyK.1 this vehicle has a heated windshield, so it’s gonna cost a lot more than a regular car’s windshield lol. My 2012 tundra has a heating element for the windshield wiper built into the windshield, and even for that a windshield replacement is more expensive.
Congrads for finally getting the LR Defender, hope this does not break. Being a Disco 3, 4, and 5 owner, I assure you that LR’s terrain resoonse modes are mostly a gimmic that is hard to understand that even it works or not - EXCEPT FOR ONE: the “auto mode” that comes with Terrain Response 2 is unbelivably good and saves you at almost all the loose terrain situations. It has recovered the vehicle by itself in a number of deep snow, deep mud and soft sand stuck positions. Will not help when there is clearance issues (if vehicle is terribly grounded), but it will help greatly in others. Tried at least 30 times. Auoto mode is great.
It's a beautiful vehicle. The fulltime 4WD system in the Defender sounds a lot like the Jeep Quadra Trac2 system found in the Grand Cherokee. It has a fulltime 4WD with a 2 speed transfer case. When in HI the default is open center dif. In Lo the center diff is locked. My Grand Cherokee has never disappointed me in the snow (yet). And the Goodyear Adventure AT with Kevlar is also what you get on the Grand Cherokee if you choose the off-road package. The tires are okay in snow. I have never had a problem getting moving. Handling is good too as long as you don't overdo it. Braking is where I'm not happy. I don't think they stop the vehicle well. My Suburban was bigger and heavier. I had General all-terrains on it and I liked those tires much better in the snow. I think if snow tires are not a practical option, people should really try to get all-seasons or all-terrains with the three peak mountain snowflake symbol.
Hi, Have a play with your All Terrain Progress Control on an off road trail. Press down your Hill Descent Control button once (Hill decent control), you will see the green lines and adjustable speed via the cruise control toggle, and then press a second time for ATPC. Solid green line on your speedo, toggle down to lowest speed and raise as required for feet off and stable driving across terrain. Will work uphill from a start position too, so set low to prevent a rapid acceleration 😀 All the best.. Darren
I would NEVER consider this vehicle for myself but I appreciate TFL taking the bullet for me. Thank you. Just looking at all of the features and functions that could (i.e., will) go wrong on that sled is dizzying.
SVR Defender seems like an oxymoron. Why not just buy a sports car if you want high speed handling? Defender is just not about that nor should it be. Why in the world anybody wants to try and turn a top heavy overbuilt truck into a tight handling speed wagon is beyond me.
@@arkos55 as far as I’m aware it’s not going to be an svr it’s going to be called the svx which just means it has the supercharged V8 but without sports suspension tires etc

I think to know how good the new Defender is in the snow you have got to have snow tyres fitted. Why not grab some snow tyres on some steels as a separate set? That would give you some testing out for this seasons video posts!
@@pl2514 if you can find someone that manufactures 20 inch steel rims to suit this application then I guess you can, but that doesnt solve the lack of sidewall issue
@@peopleschamp7258 I had no idea it was the rear calipers that caused the clearance issue, normally its the larger front discs and calipers that determine what size wheels you can use on a car. Since Land rover beefed up the brakes to match the power output of the larger engines wouldnt downsizing your brakes void warranty and insurance?
Nice to see it runs even in snow. Suggestion for camera shots, Tommy: When showing the controls and adjustments, move back to the driver's face or lift to show the road. Staring at static controls gets old after a few minutes. ;-)
I'd agree here. People get really obsessed about lockers bc they haven't actually driven these. If you're obsessed about lockers you're arguing about the wrong car (i.e. it's not a rock buggy)
I got a new 4 runner this year. Took it down quite a few trails already. Trails I used to take my k5 blazer and think (lockers would be nice) but never "needed" the lockers. Still have not used the locker. Lol. I have used the terrain select and A-track. But even then, I didn't need it. I used them because I had them. Lol. I used to have a rock crawler that was locked. It was a dedicated rig that got trailered everywhere. Lockers are nice to have "just in case" but I still am having a hard time seeing a situation I will need it. But damn glad I have it.
3:37 That look on your face when you realize you are not in control and are just a passenger behind the wheel. That is when every winter driver starts praying to the God of Traction for devine intervention.
I had a Gen 7 Celica on which I fitted four winter tyres. It was brilliant on snow exactly like in this video. Decent winter tyres are quite sufficient for 95% of drivers. Save your money.
Great Program guys!. This is probably the most technologically advanced and best looking, supposed to be Discovery 5 ever produced. In my opinion a hard core old school Defender man don’t wanna scroll a computer screen to engage a diff lock! We want to be in control!! We want to manually press a button or pulling a rugged steel lever to engage our 4x4 selection off choice!!
You guys are lucky to have places to go offload. I live in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and there's nowhere to use 4WD. Also, I can select Auto 4WD on my 2019 Ford Lariat which acts like AWD if I were to drive on roads that varied from snow covered to clear.
They did not pay 70K. They were given this rig for 55K. That was the dealers compromise to get them a rig instead of holding out for what they ordered.
I agree and I know they got it for the same price point as the original one they bought, but for that price it should come with some beadlocks and off-road tires IMO. I’d rather get a raptor and upgrade some other things with the change.
@@jesseb280 bead locks? That’s not the market LR are aiming at. You only need bead locks for serious off-road and these vehicles are not going to see anything that need bead locks. LR have abandoned their off road heritage and gone straight for the SUV market.
Been following this since the 1st Defender. "Middle of winter"? I get it as I'm up here in Alberta Canada, but really its the middle of autumn! Feels like winter here, too though. Thanks for your videos. Really entertaining!
Those regular Wrangler tires are fairly nice. I had them on my Silverado in 265/65-R18 form for a while. They handle snow well enough and aren't too expensive. They aren't the best for snow, but they work well enough in awd. However, I replaced them with Nitto Ridge Grappler 285/75-R18s (35s) back in the spring and they have been snow warriors so far in the first 4" of snow this season. I'm normally a buy American kind of guy, particularly as I live relatively close to the Goodyear HQ. But the Japanese make some quality offroad tires for the money. I had to give them a try and am not disappointed.
I don't know much about the jeep but my guess is that if both cars are bone stock then the defender will destroy the jeep in most if not all circumstances, however you could probably buy some really good mods for the jeep and still not come close to the defenders price in which case the jeep would probably win,

I'd have got it out old Defender style but these are expensive so wasn't going to start slamming logs under it. Luckily a gentle tug from a New Holland and we were out :)
Loved every second of the 100. What a machine.
Truly amazed
It actually made it more than a mile.
Good job Land Rover
Dude we're cookimg with fire now bud..get on board son!
Cost to replace the windshield: $2800.00+
Doesn’t your insurance cover it like in England? We pay £85 excess for windscreen replacement.
@@AndyK.1 this vehicle has a heated windshield, so it’s gonna cost a lot more than a regular car’s windshield lol. My 2012 tundra has a heating element for the windshield wiper built into the windshield, and even for that a windshield replacement is more expensive.
Philip Alani Yes I know. I had to have my LR heated one replaced last year. Paid £70, insurance pays the rest in England UK
@@AndyK.1 oh gotcha, I though you were referring to a standard windshield haha
@@AndyK.1 I pay about $50/year for $0 deductible glass coverage here in the US
Congrads for finally getting the LR Defender, hope this does not break.
Best and most true to the "Discovery" name, vehicle in their lineup.
Keep it coming! Thank you
Love the color scheme inside and out.
Hi,
Have a play with your All Terrain Progress Control on an off road trail.
Press down your Hill Descent Control button once (Hill decent control), you will see the green lines and adjustable speed via the cruise control toggle, and then press a second time for ATPC.
Solid green line on your speedo, toggle down to lowest speed and raise as required for feet off and stable driving across terrain.
Will work uphill from a start position too, so set low to prevent a rapid acceleration
😀 All the best.. Darren
TFL Classics,Offroad, etc: buy a 95-ish defender, fix it up a little and do a bunch of tests against the new 1..
Now that would be a great series.
Not only that, also 4Runner, Montero, Bronco, etc.
Good video, looking forward to the snow test. Defender looks awesome. Can’t wait to own one
Good morning 🌞 Roman and Tommy... watching TFL on the Big screen today!!
The colour looks superb in winter sun...the sound is awesome as well..txs again for the video..nath, ‘get ur skate on mate’...😂😂
Love U Guys...👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Take the FJ Cruiser, a relatively spartan big SUV, along for comparison!
What a fantastic winter wonderland, great explanation of this new Defender.
Any thoughts to replacing tires with a winter rated set?
I would NEVER consider this vehicle for myself but I appreciate TFL taking the bullet for me. Thank you. Just looking at all of the features and functions that could (i.e., will) go wrong on that sled is dizzying.
Test drove the Defender yesterday and feel in love with it!! Heard they are coming out with an SVR version, can’t wait
For mall crawling?
@@Pepe-dq2ib I mean considering the price and tech choices this is what it's best at. That and short easy trail into campsite.
@@arkos55 where you are wrong is the "tight" part. In the US often people value fast and powerful car over thight "ballerina" handling.
Can’t help but imagine the Queen pulling up from under your Defender asking for more gas. Great review so far, congratulations to you both, great work 👍
I really wish you had taken the time to order another minimal options one, it would've been worth the wait. Not really that excited about this posh one.
They think wed all move on. Ditto. Green and steelie base is the best.
Yes, it makes no sense. All plans and expectations were built up on the basic one. And now... i am disappointed
I enjoyed your son saying "Dad", my son is teaching in China and won't be back for Christmas and I've enjoyed, in recent years, going out in the Malvern Hills with my son and dog and hearing him say "Dad" and pointing out something. Anyway, that's just me being daft!
I think to know how good the new Defender is in the snow you have got to have snow tyres fitted. Why not grab some snow tyres on some steels as a separate set? That would give you some testing out for this seasons video posts!
Unfortunately, they cant fit the 18" steelies on this model due to the size of the brakes.
@@daverogers9476 Surely you can fit 20" steelies?
@@daverogers9476 wrong; you can put 18 on them. Those of us that have them did a rear caliper swap. Then place 18 on.
Great video! well done for sticking with the Defender👍
well thank God for the heated steering wheel - now lets get to the Mall
Nice to see it runs even in snow. Suggestion for camera shots, Tommy: When showing the controls and adjustments, move back to the driver's face or lift to show the road. Staring at static controls gets old after a few minutes. ;-)
i WiSh It HaD a R eAR l0cKiNg DifF
smh 95% of people will not even need it - not even on the trails. The terrain response will help compensate.
But that one time you need it might be priceless.
Where's the speed-dial button to call the dealership in preparation for its next breakdown and check engine light?
good one
@@secpac58chichi gotta be prepared for the inevitable, ... history repeats itself a lot when it comes to J&LR reliability ;-)
I had a Gen 7 Celica on which I fitted four winter tyres. It was brilliant on snow exactly like in this video. Decent winter tyres are quite sufficient for 95% of drivers. Save your money.
Another "lease only" vehicle...for most too expensive and too unreliable.
Can't affordably lease it - banks know they depreciate like stones... It's double the price of a Lexus GX470 lease...
This one is definetly more reliable than previous defender . 300hp is a lot of power for a 2 litre four cylinder engine.
To be clear this is a six cylinder. The four cylinder is a flaw
How do you know it is more reliable .....other than they got to drive it?
@@willb3018 First one kept driving also, didn’t go into limp or fail to start.
@@peterdelamare yeah, JLR decided to replace engine because backup cameras was not working ... if I remember correctly
What I would like to see is wich one will go farther or do better off road.btw the jeep,fj and the rover.
its a great color!
Agreed
No it's not
Good video gang, glad to see the Defender out in the woods and off of the pavement.
Wow driving over two inches of packed snow.
Simply astounding performance...isn't it? Haven't seen that kind of snow handling capability since I drove a 1962 Ford Falcon...
Here in the UK, most Land Rovers are used for school runs and shopping by people who live in towns and would never go off-highway.
@@richardsimpson3792 same in the USA
You guys are lucky to have places to go offload. I live in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and there's nowhere to use 4WD. Also, I can select Auto 4WD on my 2019 Ford Lariat which acts like AWD if I were to drive on roads that varied from snow covered to clear.
From Savannah...and you definitely have to look for them
Oh, the irony of Land Rover putting Wrangler tyres on its 4x4 cars. Glad someone at LR has a sense of humour. :)
Awesome video and thank you for no mid-roll ad 👍
Those rims are insulting and contradicting the 70K $ price tag at the same time
They did not pay 70K. They were given this rig for 55K. That was the dealers compromise to get them a rig instead of holding out for what they ordered.
@@WW-wf8tu yeah but it's a production spec, of you buy it, you'll get those wheels lol
I agree and I know they got it for the same price point as the original one they bought, but for that price it should come with some beadlocks and off-road tires IMO. I’d rather get a raptor and upgrade some other things with the change.
@@jesseb280 Beadlocks are not legal on the highway and most state roads.
@@jesseb280 bead locks? That’s not the market LR are aiming at. You only need bead locks for serious off-road and these vehicles are not going to see anything that need bead locks. LR have abandoned their off road heritage and gone straight for the SUV market.
Wow! A defender can drive down a compacted snow road!
Brillant Car, looking forward to seeing the capabilities all the negativity aside.
The Defender is a ugly unreliable pile of crap.
@@frankcarey9567 And apart from this example how many more are there that prove it is unreliable? As for looks, each to their own! Cheers
One unreliable one!!
Been following this since the 1st Defender. "Middle of winter"? I get it as I'm up here in Alberta Canada, but really its the middle of autumn! Feels like winter here, too though.
Thanks for your videos. Really entertaining!
TBH, I don't give a rip about the Defender, just watching to see how long it takes before it breaks and your guys reaction to it breaking.
How does it compare to the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk? Same stock tires, similar adjustable suspension and modes. Price?
I don't know much about the jeep but my guess is that if both cars are bone stock then the defender will destroy the jeep in most if not all circumstances, however you could probably buy some really good mods for the jeep and still not come close to the defenders price in which case the jeep would probably win,
@@granty7800 Trailhawk is excellent, very capable with adjustable air suspension, rock rails and undercarriage plates. We have one, and ported "openpilot" (excellent autopilot) but also love the tradition and products from Land Rover. Love how these guys are putting the new defender to the test.
Had Goodyear Wrangler at's on my Freelander 1 back in the day. Worst tyres ever ! There only needed to be moisture in the air and you'd slide out of control if you just touched the brakes. Bloody dangerous. Swapped them for General Grabber AT's when they first came out. What a difference. Still a little skittish in the wet at certain speeds, but what an improvement.
So, where is the " how good is it in the snow Part". All I see is 2 dudes out on flat surface and compacted snow that any car could drive on. What about steep gradients snow and ice etc. Then we can see what it can do.
Snow is forecast for next weekend.
