Well they look cute. But a St Bernards ate my cheek when I was 3. Now I don't believe that some breeds are inherently bad, but it it not just a fluffy bear.
I grew up with St. Bernards and Newfoundland’s in our home. We never had a problem with any of these dogs being mean or aggressive. You can brush them, wash them, trim their fur, cut their nails, use noisy electric shavers....as long as you’re not causing them any pain, they will be very docile. If they get annoyed with something (or someone) they almost always walk away. They’re also great with children, they are natural babysitters. They sense that children are small and fragile, so they’re gentle with them. You do have to be careful that they don’t sit on a small child, or accidentally knock them over with their tail, but otherwise it’s a perfect breed for families.

Lol I did once see an owner had outfitted their St. Bernard with a small plastic barrel. It was a great touch. Very funny.
So weird how intimidating and massive size is more often than not associated with gentle and kind temperament. So much so that we have coined terms like ‘gentle giants’ to describe exactly that!
A friend of mine growing up had a St Bernard. If you sat on the sofa, get ready. You will be covered in slobber, but it's slobber of love. He was literally the biggest cuddle bug. And, he was so freaking heavy. He'd jump into your lap, and everyone gave an audible "oof" when he did.
My father's St. Bernard not only got his own massive dog house, he also got an air conditioned dog house. He still preferred the smaller doghouse that belonged to our smaller dog. When dad would get in his armchair, He'd stretch out on his lap, dwarfing my dad to the point only his head was sticking out from behind the dog. Toby was such a good boy.
I had Saint Bernards growing up. They were more like giant stuffed animals to me that I cuddled with. One of them even let my parents know when I was about to have a seizure as a child.
This woman's videos became a crutch for me when I was in the hospital recovering from a minor stroke. I'm only 37. But I was foggy-brained I couldn't process all that much. The simplicity really helped. Just washing animals and seeing their different reactions was a balm and I think helped the healing process.
@@SuperSoundtracks "Why'd you have a stroke?", with all due respect, is an ignorant question. It can happen to any of us at any time - both myself and yourself. It's not like he chose to have a stroke. The two main reasons are 1) blocked artery or 2) leaking blood vessel
As a dog owner with a gentle giant myself I can not stress out enough, that there is nothing more relaxing, than lying with one of those ponys on the couch and just feel them breathing.
My friend's family had a pitbull that got close in size to a small st Bernard. Something about getting neutered too soon caused him to get ENORMOUS. I would lay on him on the couch and just listen to him breath. Was awesome. He was so happy just to have some touching him at all times.

My old neighbor had a several dogs as big as this. My personal favorite was named "Couch." His sister was named "Bould," (short for Boulder), and his little brother was named "Perry," named after William "The Refrigerator" Perry. Had the smallest little girl in the world. You'd see these three mountains wandering up and down the street, and you'd have to look real hard to see the top of her head somewhere in the middle.
When I was a girl, our neighbors has a St. Bernard named Doc, and his daughter a St. Bernard/German Sheppard mix named Bebe. He wasn't nearly as big as this, but he was large. We used to ride on him. Both he and Bebe were so good natured. They were so gentle with us and our two very little dogs. This brought back such happy memories. Thank you for sharing your world. He was so good for you.
We had a St. Bernard named Pandora when I was growing up. She was the gentlest thing in the world. They're bred for empathy and to find people in the snow then sit with them and keep them warm. Thats why the dogs carry brandy -- for the lost human to drink and stay warm. RIP my dear Pandora.
@Coco Addams They never carried a keg of anything. It’s a myth brought into the world by the painter Edwin Landseer. And alcohol is a bad idea in the cold anyway: While it may feel warm in the throat and stomach, it will actually make your body lose temperature more quickly.
I don't like to spoil your believes, but the original Sint Bernards at the swiss monastery did not carry a vessel with brandy around their necks, because alcohol dilutes the bloodvessels and that would only result in an even faster cooling down of the body of tje person in distress. It is just a romanticized version thet we all came to know thanks to an English painter named Edward Lanseer who portrayed the Sint Bernard with this vessel in one of his paintings around 1820.
@@annmeeus9632 Okay BUT if any dog was going to carry around something to make people feel toasty and safe and warm it would have been a sweet St. Bernard.
My daughter and I rescued what at first we thought was a loose pony on a rural highway. As we got closer we saw he was a very large but very emaciated dog covered in thousands of ticks. Turns out he is a Irish wolf hound mix. And we will never let him go hungry again. He is a tall lean fella and still only weighs about 100 lbs but he was only 73lbs when we found him.
As a fellow groomer of 30+ yrs, your comment about him taking 300yrs to dry, literally made me laugh out loud. 😂 I groom a ton of large beeeds, as they're my specialty. I can relate to your pain on the drying process!
“To all the giant breed owners….did you wake up and decide you wanted a horse living in your house?” 😂 why yes, yes I did 😂 we fostered a miniature pony and my Saint Bernard was bigger. It was fun having them both in the house but a lot of work.
You can train a dog to go potty outside but how do you train a horse or pony? I wouldn't mind the pony being inside but I just wouldn't have to clean up any messes.
@@manmountain7545 minis can be house trained but it takes A LOT of patience, dedication, positive reinforcement, routine, consistency and cue words…..went through a few horse dropping bags too.
Can i come live with you? 😁 This is literally my dream goal. I have half of my dream already, with my meathead Saint Mix but i would love having a mini. I quite miss having a horse and they're very much like a religion. As to why i wanted a giant breed haha actually no. I wanted one because of how sweet, friendly, calm and patient they are. Plus every person i have ever talked to, who has had a Saint, said "Best dog i've ever had." And i can say, yes he is.
My mum had a Saint Bernard growing up, Taydie, who was rehomed to them at 2 years old so she was massive from the get go. The dog was restricted just to the kitchen since that was tile and easily cleaned, but she would sleep in front of the kitchen door so when my Nan (who couldn't walk or stand too well) would come down to start breakfast, she'd have to heave the door open. Taydie got her own dog house eventually which, thanks to her size, was basically just a shed. RIP Taydie, a good (& heavy) girl to the end

A gental giant that would let our kids do almost anything but ride him. A rug to lay on, and very protective. He live to the ripe age of 12. We had his eyelids fixed as well. To this day, he was the best dog we had. He is missed.
I used to have a saint bernard, honestly some of my favorite dogs. I didn't have a choice in getting a near-horse in my home, but i dont regret it, she was a very loyal, loving dog. She would even help me walk around the house when I couldn't walk myself due to surgery. I miss her a lot
When I grew up this one person in my neighborhood had a chihuahua and one St. Bernard. It would look so funny to see them out on walks because of the different sizes of the dogs. Apparently they were very well matched because they needed about the same amount of physical activity (she explained that even if the St. Bernard was a big dog, it needed calm walks due to its heart and a chihuahua is not a dog you take on intense long walks).

The work of bathing grooming and general upkeep of these magnificent animals pales into nothing compared to the love and joy the give me . I love that you are so kind and caring with your clients . Well done x
We’ve had two st Bernard’s and one of them was 180-200lbs. Best dog ever. I don’t miss the drool or fur, but they were the sweetest dogs ever and so great with our small children. And one of them had surgery twice for his eyelids. I wish there were smaller, more healthy versions of the St. Bernard.
I'm so grateful you talked about lower eyelid inversions. One of my cats had that problem, and we tried less invasive corrective measures, but surgery became necessary. It improved his quality of life so much! Imagine having your eyelashes flipped in to irritate your eyes all day, every day. Love this sweet boy, appreciate you taking time to explain about breeds and conditions.
This is also something that a lot of brachycephalic dog owners need to be aware of. (Most brachys are "wrinkly" which pushes the skin around the face into uncomfortable positions.) As long as you have one from a decent breeder, or that's been properly looked after, they should be fine as the owner will have started treatment early. But it's not always a one and done. As they grow they might need a repeat operation or two. 😉

A lot of much smaller dogs are much higher strung, jumpy, and aggressive because they’re terrified of everything. Just look at Chihuahuas. But when you’re as big as a Saint Bernard and weight 200 pounds plus, what do you have to be afraid of? You’re bigger than everybody else. The gentle giant label is so appropriate for them because it’s true.
These big dogs may not be overtly nervous - as a general observation. But I have several friends who are elderly who got "bumped" in a friendly way by their big dog, and now they have fractures as a result. Great Danes, Rhodesian ridge-backs come to mind. We all know of big people who are gentle and who can be clumsy.

My uncle had one before I was born! The dog was named Sam!
So weird how intimidating and massive size is more often than not associated with gentle and kind temperament. So much so that we have coined terms like ‘gentle giants’ to describe exactly that!
My Girl Lady was an absolute love!
@@ryv2484 that's mostly how it is with dogs, the large ones are gentle cuddly goofballs, the small ones are vicious little rat things.
I was the best protected little girl on my block. My Saint didn't have to do a thing but lounge next to me, looking placidly out at the world.
I like St Bernards, but I will never ever own a slobbery dog. Can't stand the saliva everywhere.
Me neither.
@@diannt9583 I've had two St. Bernards. They are wonderful dogs, but they are not for the house proud.
@@diannt9583 I’m a total dog lover but there are two things I couldn’t tolerate. Drool and fur everywhere!
The drool is disgusting is couldn't cope
My father's St. Bernard not only got his own massive dog house, he also got an air conditioned dog house. He still preferred the smaller doghouse that belonged to our smaller dog. When dad would get in his armchair, He'd stretch out on his lap, dwarfing my dad to the point only his head was sticking out from behind the dog. Toby was such a good boy.
Wait *was*? Is the giant good boy not alive anymore?
>Was D: ?
He is so calm while the whole grooming session that i am literally thinking he came by himself and also paid the owner. The Handsome Devil.
Wow. What a gentle giant! Rumi was so well behaved. Kudos to his owners.
I had Saint Bernards growing up. They were more like giant stuffed animals to me that I cuddled with. One of them even let my parents know when I was about to have a seizure as a child.
Hello Elizabeth
How are you doing?
How would it warn your parents about an incoming seizure of yours?
I hope you are okay !
This woman's videos became a crutch for me when I was in the hospital recovering from a minor stroke. I'm only 37. But I was foggy-brained I couldn't process all that much. The simplicity really helped. Just washing animals and seeing their different reactions was a balm and I think helped the healing process.
Wow, I have some questions: Why'd you have a stroke? Did you live with hypertension, did you have an injury?
Sorry. Hope you're feeling better
@@SuperSoundtracks "Why'd you have a stroke?", with all due respect, is an ignorant question. It can happen to any of us at any time - both myself and yourself. It's not like he chose to have a stroke. The two main reasons are 1) blocked artery or 2) leaking blood vessel
@@SuperSoundtracks google is your friend bro
@@DaveWhoa they were asking a genuine question. I don’t think there was any malice or ignorance. Probably shouldn’t judge someone you don’t know.
This distinguished gentleman deserves the best of treats for being so patient and huggable during the whole grooming session
As a dog owner with a gentle giant myself I can not stress out enough, that there is nothing more relaxing, than lying with one of those ponys on the couch and just feel them breathing.
That sounds so peaceful ❤!
When they get gassy though.... yeeesh.
My friend's family had a pitbull that got close in size to a small st Bernard. Something about getting neutered too soon caused him to get ENORMOUS. I would lay on him on the couch and just listen to him breath. Was awesome. He was so happy just to have some touching him at all times.
I grew up with a lab/newf mix and there was nothing better than lying down with my head on him.
I would love to have a giant cuddly floofer like this, but I know the puddles of drool everywhere would make me throw up 😞
The fact that you can fit 300 years into a few hours is a testament to your skill. You are truly a master of your craft!
You would think in 300 years man would of invented something that would make you dry a little faster

What perfect bodyguards for her!!
Lol

@Coco Addams
They never carried a keg of anything. It’s a myth brought into the world by the painter Edwin Landseer.
And alcohol is a bad idea in the cold anyway: While it may feel warm in the throat and stomach, it will actually make your body lose temperature more quickly.
Interesting. My very first dog growing up was a St. Bernard named Pandora. My first love
@@darkknightfromcali They kind of spoil you for other dogs, don't they? Giant but smart and sweet. She was a lovely girl.
Bernard.
How is the dog so calm? Its like a gentle giant

St. Bernards were bred to be rescue dogs. They’re very famous for being gentle, especially with children.

His paws are _gigantic!_ How adorable!
His paws? You mean his snowshoes! 😁❤️

I’ve had 4 English Mastiff’s, they are the easiest dogs and they’re short haired so don’t need anything more than a bath for grooming.
As owner of an English Mastiff yes I love my horse
My mum had a Saint Bernard growing up, Taydie, who was rehomed to them at 2 years old so she was massive from the get go. The dog was restricted just to the kitchen since that was tile and easily cleaned, but she would sleep in front of the kitchen door so when my Nan (who couldn't walk or stand too well) would come down to start breakfast, she'd have to heave the door open. Taydie got her own dog house eventually which, thanks to her size, was basically just a shed. RIP Taydie, a good (& heavy) girl to the end

Our Saint Bernard would help my grandmother to her chair

When I grew up this one person in my neighborhood had a chihuahua and one St. Bernard. It would look so funny to see them out on walks because of the different sizes of the dogs. Apparently they were very well matched because they needed about the same amount of physical activity (she explained that even if the St. Bernard was a big dog, it needed calm walks due to its heart and a chihuahua is not a dog you take on intense long walks).
Small dogs also believe they are as big as the dog they are looking at. They just smell the other dog and think 'dog' not wow that is a 'big dog'.

As the owner of 2 Great Danes, I can comfortably say Rumi is a MASSIVE love floof. What a handsome boy! ❤
Bernard.
They’re unhealthy because they’ve been bred to be so unnaturally huge :(
I'm so grateful you talked about lower eyelid inversions.
Hello dear
How’s your day going today?
This is also something that a lot of brachycephalic dog owners need to be aware of. (Most brachys are "wrinkly" which pushes the skin around the face into uncomfortable positions.)
As long as you have one from a decent breeder, or that's been properly looked after, they should be fine as the owner will have started treatment early. But it's not always a one and done. As they grow they might need a repeat operation or two. 😉

I used to work in a pet shop and I know how hard it is to do what you do.
You are amazing with those animals, they are lucky to have you!
I also know how hard it is for them, specially because there are so few places which really understand the animals and respect them.
The larger the dog, the calmer it is. Interesting pattern. True gentle giant.
If big dogs act more aggressive they are not used for breeding and often are put down, on small dogs nobody cares.
Nope, not our neighbors UNRULY Rottweiler. It's a fat evil beast. Fortunately they make and I installed a 6ft vinyl fence, the Rottweiler loves it because now he can't see me. LOL
Probably would be a bad idea to selectively breed a 200-pound chihuahua

TBF, Dire Wolves aren’t as big as people tend to imagine
In Height and Length, they’re about the same size as Canadian Northwestern Wolves and the biggest Eurasian Wolves, which are the largest modern wolf subspecies.
However, in weight, Dire Wolves are about 130-150 pounds (or 60-70 Kilograms). This is far heavier then most modern wolves.

As a giant breed owner I can tell you with absolute certainty that I will never stop loving St Bernard’s. They are my dog of choice and have had the privilege of owning 3 Saints over the years. I love all dogs but I’m committed to Saints and will always have them in my life. ❤
What a superbly well mannered and all round good boy - just as well, there wouldn't be a thing anyone could do if this complete unit got a bit spicy!
It did look like the clippers tickled his paws a bit - but that looked like all the resistance. Otherwise what fantastic patience he has, what a credit to his breed.
Ooh 200 lbs of fwuffy friendliness. What a well behaved gentleman.
He's only 3-4 years old? This gentleman will still be growing!
Look at this distinguished gentleman!
@@HUYI1 He's five...I don't think he'll be growing any more😅
I'm a small person, so anytime I see a massive and/or intimidating dog, I immediately want to have it. Not just for protection, but just the idea of having such a beast listen to me and love me is **chef's kiss**
I absolutely have always adored Saint Bernards. He is exquisite. Gentle giants. He even says thank you at the end. Trying to love on you. Getting pets.
my neighbours used to have a St. Bernard named Bailey, she was one of the sweetest dogs i've ever known. she'd just lay in their front yard and let all us kids pet her. they moved probably...thirteen? maybe fifteen years ago and i sometimes think of Bailey and miss her, she was so sweet and nice.
A female friend of mine some years ago had a St. Bernard from when he was a puppy, and never taught him to sit on the floor versus in her lap. When he grew to full size, he continued to try to sit in her lap. My friend was rather petite, so it was hilarious to see her struggle to keep that giant dog from crushing her when she sitting on the couch!
I always wanted a St. Bernard when I was a kid, I hope someday I'll have a house with a yard large enough to have a big dog. What a beautiful good boy 🖤🖤🖤
He his gorgeous. ❤ Xxxxx. Linda
