    Hi Seth. I'm one of the new moderators on r/martialarts. Kind of an interesting position here. End of 2023, the subs old mods were all replaced and Halfcut (the lead moderator of r/Sambo) obtained the sub. He's since added myself and a few other mods from the r/Bullshido sub.
    We've pretty much left the rules as they were when taking over the sub so far, but are working on trying to make it better than it's been. It's definitely a weird sub historically, as martial arts can really draw out some oddballs. Obtaining a large sub all at once with an existing user base that's kind of all over the place is a challenge to figure out how to make positive changes with, so we're in it for the long haul trying to figure out how to improve things.
    When it comes to "Low Effort Content," the way I judge this is on how you post something. If people are just dropping videos and leaving, the sub gets bogged down with Karma farming videos that bring no discussion to the sub. If a video is posted with some body of text that brings some discussion bait to the table, I'll approve the post every time.

    About using a sword in one or two hands: it seems a lot of people underestimate the advantage of using a sword in one hand. You see this in a lot of game systems, where using a sword in two hands simply confers a bonus, which is only balanced by the ability of using a shield or second weapon in the other hand if you use a one handed grip. In reality, things aren't that simple. Basically, both grips have their own advantage. There are plenty of sources for historical fencing systems where you use a sword one handed, without having something in your other hand. You gain a significant amount of range with a one handed grip, which is really important in most fencing situations. Using two hands will primarily give you more controll. You also get more power, sure, and while hitting hard is not necessarily that important, hitting fast is. However, the difference in speed is quite small if you know how to properly generate power with a one handed grip, especially since a one handed grip is usually more nimble, allowing for different motions than the two handed grip. Where the two handed grip really shines is in allowing you to use a bigger, heavier weapon while still being agile. My opinion is that if a sword is light enough that you can use it in one hand effectively, you are probably better off doing so rather than using both hands. In the end, it's more of a question about what works best for you in a given situation. Source: been a HEMA instructor for ten years.

      @thehuntermikipl1170 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I don't practice sword fighting, but I am pretty sure you can move (and especially accelerate) your sword very fast by moving one of your hands forward, while pulling the other hand back, and you can't exactly do that with just one hand. Right?
      Also why not just use a sword two handed and switch to one handed if you need? People definitely did, and do that, at least for range, even with actual two handed weapons.

    • @Bangabonger
      @Bangabonger 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The point of why japanese swords are two handed tho for it to cut deeper as it is prmarily meant to slice whit like a kitchen knife.. another advantage whit the design itself is that it is much easier to learn how to use effectivly in general, which is why it was adopted by Korea as well, it was commented that it took less than a month to make new recruits proficient enough for the battlefeild rather than 5 months upon adopting the new design.

    • @nojlexa
      @nojlexa 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thehuntermikipl1170 The "push and pull", as the technique of power generation that you are describing is often called, is widely regarded as ineffective. I'm not an expert at two-handed swords myself, but if you want to read into why, there is an article by a physicist HEMA practitioner that goes into great detail of why this doesn't really work. Google "swordstem push pull" and you'll find it, it's called "Physics, Push-Pull with the longsword, bad cuts…. and you!". By the way, I'm not saying that there aren't great ways of generating power with a two-handed grip, just that a one-handed grip has some techiniques of power generation, like the moulinette or molinello (same technique but different languages), that can generate a surprising amount of power.
      As for switching from two-handed to one-handed grip, that is absolutely done with two-handed swords to get more reach, both in European swordsmanship and Japanese kenjutsu. That can be a bit risky, as the recovery is generally slower when wielding a large sword in one hand. What, to my knowledge, is almost never done is switching from a one-handed to a two-handed grip with a one-handed sword. The only exception I can think of is half-swording, were you grip the blade with one hand. That is a different kettle of fish, though, since it's primarily a close-quarters anti-armor technique.

    • @NyxDiscordia33
      @NyxDiscordia33 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      you also have to take into account that if we're talking actual effectiveness using a sword with one hand gives you a free hand to do other things
      you can try to grapple your opponent or confuse them, disarm their own weapon
      in a fight to the death there are no rules, y'know?
      I kinda forgot how effective just grabbing onto your opponent could be until I saw some gameplay of Hellish Quart

    12:55 that's hella legit! I believe the guy who did he o-goshi has kendo experience (purely by how unfazed he was by the other dude's attacks and his apparel). Speaking as a kendo guy myself, there is no throws or takedowns in the typical kendo curriculum but it's not unreasonable to assume that this guy also has judo experience. Older style kendo (gekkiken) also included many judo aspects, and the two styles compliment each other very well. I would imagine that perhaps the kendo guy opted to use grappling instead of sword work due to the fact that neither of them are wearing protective head gear, which can risk damaging the eyes of either opponent. Super cool to see kendo + judo together, in the way that it originally was!

    Tai chi(non spar or combat), yoga and meditation for those of with serious injuries. Sadly no sparing. Its just the reality of the situation.
    HOWEVER: doing the above will be seriously helpful to those living with disability and serious injury.
    Im speaking as an former fighter (judo and mma and various others + military) now old and disabled.
    For me I train every day, movement, with the likes of tai chi and shadow boxing etc + a LOT of stretching and exercises from physio - this has enabled me to be in the position of able to walk with a stick, without this training id be in a wheelchair probably, for years I kept going to dojo/gym as 'keep fit' but eventually the risk of further damage was just too great. I really miss it.
    Also regarding the man with the bear - That's how bears 'play', they clinch. Black bears are often very friendly with humans that they know - often domesticated, if the man was a say a park or zoo keeper or domesticated the bear then this is no more dangerous than playing tug of war with a big dog. The man even clearly invited the bear to play at the start of the vid. Of course your a moron if you try this with a wild bear of any colour... and good luck trying to domesticate a brown, grisly or god forbid polar.

    Bros wakazashi was just a katana that was definitely a sword greater than 2 shaku…. The whole point of the wakazashi is for “tactical” situations. They were back up swords and also meant for interior combat…. By definition the sword must be under a certain length to be a wakazashi, and that just looked like a cheap shitty katana
    Edit:
    Also in regards to the girl with TBI I started up Iado recently which is an incredibly peaceful and meditative martial art involving the use of a katana… which I guess helps explain the first part of my comment lol… but it’s very enjoyable and relaxing and feels good when you get better, and it’s fairly feasible to practice solo

    weird story time re:TBI
    one of my best friends in Korea survived a brain aneurysm when he was about 18. It inspired him to completely change his life and take up martial arts, even though his head is currently being held together by metal plates and clips in his brain. 22 years later, he's still going strong teaching MMA to the military. He was well known and respected in our community as one of the best fighters in the city. It is possible to train with this sort of injury, but it's important that your training /sparring partners know your situation and to take appropriate care, which we should be doing anyway.

    that was probably kenjutsu. kendo doesn't do grapples or throws. but then again he didn't do much, just blocked and kept moving towards the weeb who probably challenged him because he saw ruroini kenshin and though that made him an expert. the guy might have mixed in something else along kendo
