      His hypothetical kicks made me rather worried, ever seen how a japanese kitchen knife went through a table top? Such a knife through his foot would make him bleed in such speed that he probably would not come near the door anymore, let alone the shock that kicks in after a few seconds.

      @@PaMuShin Sure but if you pay attention to what you're doing and kick the guy while his knife hand is holding the ladder he's going to be toast. Imagine getting basically curb stomped while you're holding on to the top of a ladder. One kick could possibly break your neck, and if not that then make you fall off. You can't exactly put your arms up to protect your head since you're using them to keep yourself on the ladder. Even if the second pursuer wisened up after seeing the first guy get killed and tried to avoid the kicking and do something tricky with the knife, he's going to have a rough time trying to catch his foot with the pointy end with the speed of a whole leg coming down on him, while he has at most one arm available to use and zero mobility because he's stuck to the ladder.

    Plenty of people with bad knees can fight. "Just run" is very dependent on the situation.
    Many times we see situations with old men who beat up attackers where those attackers could have 100% outrun the older men.

      A lot of people in actually bad situations run the risk of overwaiting good opportunities to escape. People really die because they get to comfortable in hiding spots or playing the Scooby-Doo door game with people chasing them. You have to find the right amount of proactive and reactive in order to get out of bad situations. It seems like a good rule to me, although, it would almost be better if the whole point was to lose them and then get out again.

  • @rbr1170
    @rbr1170 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Yep, running away alone is not enough. This shows you never know who has the better cardio until its too late. What people fail to consider about the advice is that you first have to create a distraction (like throwing your friend into the mix 😅) or incapacitate the attacker to an extent. Hiding is also no good in most situation where if they find you you will probably have nowhere to run. Hiding needs luck where if you find a good hiding place you'll survive but if it is in an abandoned area where they just have the time to search all day and all night, you pretty much found the perfect place for them to hide your dead body. This really is a tricky situation.

    I love these videos. But I do have one issue with all these self defence testing type videos. Running away doesn't work... When the person chasing you is a highly trained, stone cold sober, athlete. Knife defence doesn't work.... When the attacker is a highly trained MMA fighter that has also studied videos of knife attacks. All fair enough, but realistically, most random attacks are not initiated by highly trained combat sports athletes. There literally is no one size fits all solution. As an older guy, for me now, running away is probably not the best option in most cases. I simply can't run very fast or very far anymore and if I tried and then still had to fight, I'd be gassed out. Me 30 years ago, different story, I was fast as hell back then. There are many, many variables. To many to come up with an if they do this I do that type scenario.

    • @rando5673
      @rando5673 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah being more athletic than the general population gives you way more options. Being older, your best bet is to carry a force multiplier and know how to use it. A sturdy cane can save your life

    • @Leifler
      @Leifler ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Watching videos of old guys beating up muggers and thinking about how many random times people are temporarily injured has actually made me do a 360 on the value of "running". For self defense.
      Most criminals who might chase you, are probably 15-35. That's 20 years.
      Most humans live go at least 75-ish? So you spend from 35-75 or 40 years being a less good runner as a potential victim.
      You're also way more likely to be victimized when you look "easier" to victimize. So gray hair = mild target on your head.
      So from like 50-75 you're probably in some high victim potential.
      Also, while injured, if you're 30 and you're limping, you're more likely a target.
      If help is really close by, running might be legit, like you just turned the wrong corner and there's a crowd back the way you came etc.
      But you will generally spend more of your life as a potential victim as likely a less good runner.

    The "time is ticking mate" with the horror movie voice, was probably the best part about the vid. But seriously, how come the flying kicks did such low damage. Were the opponents this steadfast or were you guys just hesitant? Especially mike is a very strong kicker regarding flying kicks, if he wants to. Jeff might just have not enough training, most his techniques except his two step combos are rather ground based. But just from my expectation i would have though these two guys would wreck the attackers with a flying kick.

      @maxhensley1685 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      There's a difference between a flying kick delivered to shove someone away, and a kick delivered to ram someone with concussive force. The latter can hit someone with the solid, rigid end of a heavy moving object, but apart from the fact that this can be thrown off with the wrong distance/timing like any other kick... they don't actually want to hurt the other people in this event. That's why Matt was throwing theoretical kicks rather than actually trying to knock the guy off a ladder. It's not like flying kicks are a guaranteed KO or anything, but anything that likely to injure the other people playing their role in the event, they're probably going to avoid using.
      It doesn't even have to be a conscious choice. If you're "fighting" someone you don't seriously want to hurt like that, you'll often find yourself reflexively holding back even if you consciously decide to prioritize "winning."

    When we taught WSD we got asked that a lot. The answer was ... complicated.
    First, you have to have some assurance that you can run away fast enough to get away. Even people who are heavy and not good runners can accelerate pretty fast over short distances. For the cases we were interested in it wasn't great because men can generally, not always but generally, run faster than women all else being equal.
    Second, you have to have somewhere safer to run to. Otherwise you can end up in the same fight but more tired which isn't exactly perfect.
    But third, we had written a review article on that had all the published data at the time. It was pretty clear. In cases where the defender was trying to avoid a violent crime - sexual assault, armed robbery, assault, etc - running worked surprisingly well. Completed crime rate dropped from over 90% for "do nothing" to less than 20% for "Run". But so did fighting back and so did a number of other tactics. You wouldn't expect it from scenarios with guys in armor or the Octagon or other things. But that's the difference between being in a mutual combat fight and self protection. The more a criminal has to work for the reward the less attractive it is. The more and *earlier* his internal script goes off the rails the less sure he is of what to do next.
    Once again, crime prevention is different than deciding to play knuckle tag with another person. Do something useful, do it immediately, and do it 100% seems to be pretty good advice. As Napoleon said "I might lose a battle, but I will never lose a second"

    This still gives the players too much advantage: knowing they will be attacked. How about doing something similar to Among Us and will be assigned randomly and in secret the attacker and player. Setting could be the same but with the attack happening in a given span of time (say between 0 - 45 minute initial window of attack but of course you don't have a timer with you unless you are an attacker) and you just go about your ways during that time just having a tour of the place. Still has that sense of knowing an attack would happen but with more uncertainty of when and from who.

The fact that every single person got 0 points in this exercise shows that if you were actually faced with this scenario, of multiple attackers coming at you with knives, without a gun, you are likely dead. The odds are so stacked against you here.
      In places where you're not allowed to own a gun, it's not what would you do in this situation? It's how would you avoid this situation? ie. don't go out by yourself, don't go to places where there's not a lot of people, etc. But in THIS specific situation, without a gun, you're dead.

    Yeah but like... what if you're a lifelong athlete who's been outrun only once in his entire sports career (baseball, soccer, swimming, track, tennis, racquetball, and ultimate)? Like faster than at least 99.9% of people across the entire country who have run against him? Like some guy who could run around with you in a 10'x10' room until you starve to death without getting hit? And what if he's the reigning hide-and-seek champion ahead of both Saddam AND Bin Laden? Is it okay for him to run?

    So I think running away is still an option, and people shouldn't be lead to believe that running away from a fight isn't possible. It IS harder than one might think, but it won't be as hard as Seth's scenario. In Seth's scenario, those dudes *knew* where people were going to end up, and the attacker's whole goal was to catch you.
    In a "real life situation", an attacker's goals are a lot more nebulous. It could be they want something from you. It could be they want to hurt you. But even if they wanted to do those two things, how far they are willing to go and what they are willing to sacrifice would vary. In this safer space type of situation, the attackers knew and controlled a lot of the variables. In a life situation, the attacker doesn't know if other help might be around, if you might be carrying a knife or gun, and so on. Maybe the attacker is an opportunist, and when the opportunity's cost gets too high its just not worth it for the attacker. Not that you can count on this, but imo these are all factors that go into what eventually could happen.

    • @thyowen
      @thyowen ปีที่แล้ว +5

      very good points. most the time an assailant has a reason, something they want from you, and theres a calculation thats been made. running can give you the opportunity to change some of the variables, and subsequently the calculation. entirely situation dependent ofc.

    • @rbr1170
      @rbr1170 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the old "throw your money in the other direction and run opposite of that" will probably work as well in some scenario. But yeah, running away should still be part of everyone's list but make sure to add "create a distraction, then run".

    • @sigiligus
      @sigiligus 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The attacker might not know where you're running, but neither are you. Your instinct is to just wildly flee in the opposite direction. Not only do you have to successfully lose the assailant if he chases you, but then you have to go back wherever you were headed without running into him again. You also have to turn your back to the assailant, which is a bad idea, and I guarantee 99% of the "just run" guys are terminally online reddit users who think they're smart but couldn't even run 100 metres without collapsing. If you think running away is a good idea, guess what? You have to practise it.
