Rebel's Australian accent threw you Seth. She said "all STYLE novice martial arts tournament". Not all star. The other belt was a team color belt in all likelihood, although it might have been her "medal". Prizes were notoriously cheap for those events back then.

It used to be very common to distinguish contestants by having one of them wear a red belt over their own. The referees would have a red flag and a white flag to signal points or penalties for one or the other.

I like Kevin Hart, but this series of his is really unbearable to me. I hate the way he shows zero respect to the people who take their time to teach their sport or art and basically makes fun of everything he tries.
Yes, I realize it's all a joke and a gag, but it just comes off as obnoxious to me. You can make jokes and have fun trying something new without being a prick about it and disrespecting the others.

I know belt ranks don't work that way, but she already had a yellow belt, and she remembered kata 1 and the 'num-chucks', so I feel okayish. If it was a club in this town they'd let her keep the yellow and just leave her there until she caught up. Chalk it up to "adjusting to standards".
my guess as to style of the sensei is hapkido, which, while the pedigree is contentious, everyone agrees it has a daito-ryu like influence which I don't see that often outside of some jujutsu schools and aikdo of course, but the strikes are more karate like than what I've seen for hapkido

Fun part is the difference in what a yellow belt means.
(Where I used to train yellow meant training four terms, four kyu tests, meaning testing out three katas with bunkai ((Tachi Kata) Fukyu Gata Dai Ichi and Fukyu Gata Dai Nie, and Gekisai Dai Ichi)... then you trained another to get a black stripe on it, and then at least one more to finally get a green one ...
Where I train now yellow is one term, Takyuko Shodan, Nidan and Sandan, and Heian Shodan in the test.)
But I start to wonder if this is not actually a stunt school?
Sort of funny anyway. And she has the body memory there, that is interesting.

@@dirgniflesuoh7950Weird. In judo I started at 5 but my dad and sensei thought I was too young, so I came back to it when I was 9, and then I was a yellow belt for all of literally 3 months, then was an orange belt for another 2 years, THEN finally got to a green belt at 14, THEN a blue, purple, and eventually up to a brown belt 1 stripe before I stopped at 16 due to an ACL surgery I needed. Then I just went into college and got a job and girlfriend and decided no time for martial arts. I'd like to go back to at least do judo and get back to a brown belt. That would be nice.

    • @dirgniflesuoh7950

@@zaynes5094 What is weird is a matter of perspective. Where I used to train getting a black belt took five years, if You were exceptional. Usually it was more like ten years or more.
But my point sort of was, it is a better idea to ask how many years have you been training than belt colour, bc belt colours can mean almost anything.
Second, if You find a good enough place to train, it is never too late to begin again. For me it is a lesson in accepting that my body has aged, and also I have a "weird" perspective in changing style, and the differences in how, in what order things are taught. I believe it is good for my brain 😄

3:02 I've seen tournaments where this happened, it's about how the match is judged. Two people did Kata at the same time, one of them with an additional red belt. The main judge then called upon the four assistant judges to choose their winner, and to do so they either raised a white or a red flag or crossed flags if it was even. Granted, you could just give them numbers and hold up number paddles, but that's what they did and that's why some people sometimes wear two belts in a competition.

About the two belts, I have not trained the JKA way, but we still have the two belts in competitions, the reason is purely competition etiquette, we will have a red and a white belt that the two competing people will wear to differentiate between them, it’s not always necessary, but comps of the same belt with judges that don’t know the students have a much easier time scoring when they can call points for the one with aka or shiro (red/white probably spelt wrong). We would certainly not train this way :P

Some karate tournaments use a flag system to pick the winner, when two karateka (or two teams) are simultaneously on the mat. On my style (SKIF Shotokan) it's AKA (red) vs Shiro (white), though on other associations they could use red vs blue, or other combinations. Participants will wear a belt colored after their assigned side (which changes during the tournament making us put belts on and off permanently 😁).
What happens sometimes is that the rules are not clear on whether or not participants still need to wear their graduation belt. When this happens (or if the rules specifically say they should), they end up wearing two belts at the same time: One is their graduation (yellow in her case) and the other is the side identifier (red in her case).
When the tournament rules specifically do not allow graduation belts, it avoids this two belt nonsense while avoiding the karateka graduation influencing the judges on their decision.

Dont you need to wear a red or blue belt when competing. Usually for Kumite for points (Red and white ti be honest). I wouldn't see it far fetch that her red one is to identify her as the Red competitor for point scoring and her Yellow belt is her rank. I just find it odd that they would use a full belt instead of flags, even tough some organisations do they usually wear only the competiton one not both, or use flags (like in tag football).... Just an odd choice from that Dojo but not that crazy or anything.

You should react to bruce lee's Game of Death action scenes(the og bruce lee ones)
They are pretty great with the martial art variety.

Its nice to see that a good Karate practitioner is questioning the weird play fighting and other nonsense they were doing here lmao.

I always used to confuse Kevin James with the dude from Kings of Queen tv show till a friend showed me a few of his movies. Not really sure why people find him funny since his entire schtick is looking serious while bungling the execution but feigning ignorance. Basically everything he was doing over here was an intentional attempt at a joke, he was never actually serious about any of it.

Here’s the thing. Nobody ridicules fighting sports. Martial arts yes. Fighting sports nope.

Oh, yes, plenty of people ridicule fighting sports all right, don't worry about that.
"Fighting" sports are nothing special, they're just that, sports.
And players in those sports who think their potential skills necessarily translate to something worthy in the "real world" are in for a rude awakening.
(See for example the story about this MMA guy who was attacked at home by an intruder. He was so surprised that an outside the ring unexpected fight was nothing like a codified sports bout that he was quite afraid and almost lost all his technique and abilities. At least he was very open and honest about it.)
