@@licensetoshred Same here. I remember first seeing it at ~14 and was blown away, but didn't really grasp the concepts outside of the action. Wisdom has certainly helped on that. Now, every year, I make sure to go through Bebop.
The best part of Bebop is that even today it continues to introduce people to anime. It was my first anime in 2015, and is always the first one I recommend to people who want to get into anime
The Beyond Ghibli title cards were fantastic. What I love the most about Bebop is the music. It's just spectacular. Second thing I love most is that it ENDS after one season. All other shows just keep going forever until you get sick of them.
Finished watching cowboy bebop for the first time the other day. Couldn't stop thinking how much the vibes and style and feel of the soundtrack (even though most of the music is diferent genres) reminded me of samurai champloo, so it's awesome finding out that watanabe is the guy behind both. Instant fan here
Cowboy Bebop is admittedly not a show that everyone can get behind, and as time goes on more and more people believe it to be overrated. But God, if you're lucky enough to have this show click with you, there's truly nothing else like it in the medium of anime. Also, it has some of the best and most varied TH-cam retrospectives of any TV show.
I saw "spoiler filled laudanum video" when I read that I want to watch this, you've made a 20 minute video on this, the greatest of anime. But did you use the dub or the sub? I adore the subbed version and loath the dub. If it's dubbed, like, could you make a different version with the sub instead? 😁
DArn was hoping you used some some songs sung by Steve Conte or some of the other vocalists, Mai Yamane mostly used here, to show how much Yoko Kanno used Session Players/Vocalists.
"Ganymede Elegy" and "Hard Luck Woman" have some of the most touching scenes I've seen in a series or film, I get choked up just thinking about those ones.
Watanabe's debut was actually MACROSS PLUS (1994). In fact, if you look at the character designs in those you'll see similarities to Faye, Julia, and even Spike.
I just want you to know that it's not okay to play with people's hearts like this, just like the show your review ended too quickly. Faye I miss you girl.
I come back to this video every few months to revisit one of, if not, the best video about one of the best shows I've seen. I can't thank you enough for making something so beautiful.
You got the theme and story line correct. You got the undertones and feeling right. You incorporated our favorite crew from the 'Verse, you did all the music right, and you finished with Wo Qui Non Coin... This is perfect. Thank You
i actually cant put into words how much i love this show. my all time favorite piece of media ever made. even watching this, hearing the music, puts a smile on my face. i watch it a few times a year.
Brah this was an amazing retrospective look inside the family of Cowboy Bebop. No one even knew what it was when I first saw it. But you have managed to capture the heart and soul of this amine beautifully. Thank you it’s exactly how I feel about it. You have my sub my friend...... And remember.....A Snake Cannot Eat...... A Dragon.
I almost never leave comments under youtube videos but I'll write one down here just to say how impressed I am by the work you put into creating this video and how much I enjoyed watching it.
Thank you Beyond Ghibli for making a video on my favorite series of all time. All love. This anime touched me in a personal level because I can relate to spike and the rest of the cast because the anime display thier suffering through unique ways of story telling. The story is deep and unique in so many ways and I love it because it's very grounded and realistic. Cowboy bepop ost is my life, it helped me through depression because the ost has very emotional and relax vibe that I can listen to. I would listen to the ost religously because my life is filled with depressed things, I've listened to it these past 1 year and a half and still listening to this day. Love the characters and the rest.
Hi. I watched this video few weeks ago and you convinced me to watch Cowboy Bebob. I came back to say Thak You. I haven't seen many anime in my life, and I haven't seen non in my chirdhood, so I wasn't fan of it. But this series is absolutely magnificent. You said in this video that Bebop is worth rewatching and I thought this is an exaggeration of anime fan but just when I finished 26 session, I wanted to start waching it from begining. Thank You!
I don't know how many times i've watched Cowboy Bebop, but everytime i see it, i feel a pain deep in my chest, like a sentiment of nostalgia, like something that was always there, comforting me in my most introspect and philosophical moments of my teenagehood. It was the reason i started listening to jazz and blues at the age of 15 and became absolutely addicted to the genres since then. Puting the shounen aside that were born in the final of the 90s (in this case, the "big three"), Cowboy Bebop is definatly the greatest anime i've ever watched in my life, just like Ghost in the Shell, Akira and so many other animes that try to defy the greatest dogmas of society, and defy the civilization trough it's expectators, us of course. And as strange as it might seem, i've always preferred the subs over the dubs, always, not because the english language is not my native language, but because i've always prefer the series in their original content, however Bebop is the only show that i have that is in it's dub version, don't know why but the only way i can see it is in the american version like there's some inexplicable reason to it. Beyond Ghibli i just found out about you and your channel today and the only thing that comes to my mind to say about what you do is - "Tank" you. PS - You've just gained a new subscriber.
The thing I definitely enjoy from your videos is when you go over the history of the series and its production. This video for example I have never heard about how cowboy bebop didn't air all the episodes originally, how it was funded, and how much effort it took just to actually make the series. The backstory to this series is one I rarely hear anyone talk about and its interesting to finally hear about it in detail.
what i loved about this anime was the depth it had from the start to its inconclusive end. so much emotions ran within the series, and it felt like i lost a friend once i finished it.
A beautifully written/editted video essay highlighting everything that I love about Cowboy Bebop. I still regularly listen to the amazing OST, and Blue always gives me the feels. Man, this is making me want to rewatch the series, again! XD Thank you for this awesome video! Also, this reminds me that I really need to watch Samurai Champloo. XD
Man. Hard to believe it's been 15 years since I first saw this show on late night on MTV, of all things. Still probably my #1 anime of all time. And this video? Such a love letter to the show, I can praise it enough. All the best man.
Beyond echoing all the good stuff heaped on this video (deservedly), I'd also like to thank you for the shout-out to Serenity/Firefly, which got done dirty by the network but at least we got a movie.
"You feel a little out of place, like you just lost a family of sorts" Man that is exactly what I just felt. I just watched Cowboy Bebop for the first time. I am 26 and knew of Bebop, but never got around to watching it. I have been watching anime since I was a kid but for some reason it never reached my plate. Once I finished it now, I felt so empty and like crying. Even though everything was self contained and finished I was so hungry for more.
If an art can make your heart break, numb your mind with questions you would never ask, fill your consciousness with emotions you never knew were there and gap your mouth awestruck with ecstatic satisfaction & gratitude to have stumbled upon such a masterpiece and especially if you (the audience) are adults who keep coming back then you know you’ve watched a timeless classic. It’s not an opinion, it’s a fact Cowboy Bebop is the greatest anime and one of the greatest animated series/film of all time. Cowboy Bebop is even better than Spirited Away. There, I said it. Edited: I haven’t even started on the original soundtrack of Cowboy Bebop. It’s a work of art which needs review on its own.
Your style of writing, editing and critical eye makes your videos almost equal to the anime’s that you are discussing. In some cases (Miss Hokusai) I’ve preferred your videos and hearing you discusss the movies more than I enjoyed the movies themselves. You are real talent and I think it’s only a matter of time until you break out of TH-cam...
I've been trying to get into anime for years. I really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop and Kids on the Slope is one of the most moving shows I've ever seen (if only they did another episode so the ending wasn't so rushed), but to this day anime still doesn't draw me in that much. Watching a whole series of a show I like seems like a big time investment when I could listen to a few albums or watch a few films instead. Yet here I am, subscribed to your channel, constantly watching your analysis. There's a real depth and quality to your essays that very few other channels match, the passion is really obvious and something about the way you explain all these shows is very nostalgic and oddly soothing. You're probably one of the best video essay writers I've ever come across on TH-cam, and that's saying something. Big up man, keep it going!
If you want an inventive world, try Twelve Kingdoms. If you want top notch character drama, watch Ping Pong the Animation. And if you need another romp in space, Banner of the Stars is very nice.
I heard of cowboy bepop in college. I was either too busy or maybe just watching a few episodes with friends I wasn't really paying enough attention. Maybe i was too young I finished cowboy bepop for the first time yesterday, and I've seen plenty of R rated anime film by this point but this show has the most relatable adult themes I've ever seen. What a masterpeice. And theres a movie!? Must get my hands on it
"Its snarling jazz soundtrack was (if you'll excuse the pun) instrumental in thematically grounding the series." I will not excuse the pun. Own it like a man! "No pun intended" is a sign of weakness of character.
Your essays into the heart and soul and mind of anime are probably the best I've ever seen. And I've actively been into the genre since around 1992, and was exposed through Voltron, Robotech, etc. in the 80s. Thank you, and please keep it up!!!
This gave me the same feelings as when I first watched this show all over again. Well said- I couldn't pin down what that feeling I got from Bebop was, but I think you're right. It's "belonging". I got so invested and immersed in the characters and world that I felt like I was actually there, another member of their dysfunctional little family haha.. I just finished watching this show, but already I'm longing for a rewatch.
This is without a doubt the finest retrospective I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. Thank you for reminding me of all those wonderful late night adult swim viewings.
This was an extremely well done retrospective, you described it perfectly when you talked about repeat watches, "it only makes sense then to go back to the beginning and feel at home once more" described it perfectly for me.

This was a fantastic, incredibly well put together hamage the the ever classic Cowboy Bepbob. From the incredible voice and audio to the well timed and almost clerverly perpetrated mashup of clips to go along with the narration. This was a incredible video made by Beyond Ghibli; which in a way pays a tip of the hat to the way videos should and used to be made on the internet. With heart, a bit of soul, and hours spent crafting the best polished work someone or a team could. Hats off to you and thank you for a incredible video!!
Great retrospective video. I remember watching this amazing show when it first came to the US. I was in college, and like college Bebop seemed like a blend of all worlds. Not many shows can become timeless the same way Cowboy Bebop did.
This video gave me chills. Just finished Cowboy Bebop for the first time yesterday. It is a beautiful amalgamation of genres, music, and characters. Can't wait to rewatch it when I am looking to return to the Bebop.
Beautiful commentary. Cowboy Bebop, Tri-Gun and Blue Gender were my first anime experiences when I was 12 and my abusive drunk father left. I turned to Anime for guidance, to suffer with friends and care about them, lived in my own bubble of happiness no matter how dark it was outside of it. Every Saturday Night Adult Swim 11pm-2am and then 2am-5am repeats. That was my only happiness from age 11-16. Anime is philosophy and philosophy is life.
Oh man, I remember when I first saw CB. I was 14 and already an anime fan, so I stayed up late to watch "unedited" versions of series I already liked. That's how I found this show. Over time, I realized that this anime was something special. Unlike many shows, I actually started to legitimately care about the characters. I hoped Spike would find Julia, I cried when Ed and Ein left the Bebop, and I wanted Faye to find peace with her past. I'm 32 now, and I still love this damn show. Also, this anime is what started my borderline obsession with Corgis. I'd never even heard of them until I saw Ein running around on his short little legs. I went to school, looked them up on my library's computer, and got some stern looks from the staff when I squeed over how adorable they are, lol.
It’s fun to come back to these retrospectives every so often. It brings up such good memories of watching this for the first time as a kid. Sitting there in the dark, completely enthralled with every episode. It made me feel emotions that were new at the time, and was probably the first time that a show really made me sit and think about it and process how I felt about it. And every time, it takes me right back to how I felt then, like it’s still somehow new. Shit. What a great show.

Think I need another start to finish viewing, as a matter of fact. Been a bit.
@@burninsherman1037 Yeah I've already started another rewatch now! I just cannot get over Bebop. It's gotta be my #1 anime by far. Totally picking up whatcha putting down! :)
@@licensetoshred Same here. I remember first seeing it at ~14 and was blown away, but didn't really grasp the concepts outside of the action. Wisdom has certainly helped on that. Now, every year, I make sure to go through Bebop.
@@licensetoshred Great #1 to have. It's the best.
The best part of Bebop is that even today it continues to introduce people to anime. It was my first anime in 2015, and is always the first one I recommend to people who want to get into anime
I could listen to people eruditely sing the praises of Cowboy Bebop all day long.
Hey, if you dug this check out my spoiler-filled follow up discussing Bebop's ending: th-cam.com/video/6eYRRleGEsc/w-d-xo.html
I saw "spoiler filled laudanum video" when I read that
I want to watch this, you've made a 20 minute video on this, the greatest of anime.
But did you use the dub or the sub?
I adore the subbed version and loath the dub.
If it's dubbed, like, could you make a different version with the sub instead? 😁
Thank you for putting my feelings into such elegant words. Good work, as always.
You so amazing
DArn was hoping you used some some songs sung by Steve Conte or some of the other vocalists, Mai Yamane mostly used here, to show how much Yoko Kanno used Session Players/Vocalists.
Nooooo! Dubbed.. 😭
"Ganymede Elegy" and "Hard Luck Woman" have some of the most touching scenes I've seen in a series or film, I get choked up just thinking about those ones.
Watanabe's debut was actually MACROSS PLUS (1994). In fact, if you look at the character designs in those you'll see similarities to Faye, Julia, and even Spike.
thanks bro. hadnt heard of that one before. going to watch it now.
How can watanabe made me more in love with his work? Love macross!!
I just want you to know that it's not okay to play with people's hearts like this, just like the show your review ended too quickly.
Faye I miss you girl.
I’m not crying, you are... this was beautiful , thank you
I come back to this video every few months to revisit one of, if not, the best video about one of the best shows I've seen. I can't thank you enough for making something so beautiful.
Loving the title, loving the thumbnail. Loving this channel.
"tittle"
thumbnail makes it all. Style is everything!
Loved this comment :)
Loving you all.
This is the greatest love letter to the greatest anime. It made my heart ache.
I'm biased as someone who loves this show unabashedly, but this is one of your best videos. I am so excited for the Evangelion one!
“The seatbelts - road to the west” what a soulful song
One of these days, we're going to have fully immersive VR.
You know where you can find me, when that happens.
Just like everyone else
This is the best bebop video essay on this site, and that is saying quite a lot.
One of the best, if not the best analyses on the greatest anime of all time. Thank you for this!
Your structure of this video has not gone unnoticed, beautiful work man. I'm legit having goosebumps watching this.
Thank You!
One of my all time favorites. I watch it every time it’s on.
Such a great summary of Bebop and its impact! Thanks for putting this together
what i loved about this anime was the depth it had from the start to its inconclusive end. so much emotions ran within the series, and it felt like i lost a friend once i finished it.
Man, the way you write is so inspiring. So glad to have found your channel.
My favorite anime ever. Such good artists, directors, producers and writers! Nothing like Cowboy Bebop. Nothing!
NNOOTTHHIINNGG
any form of art even :(
Bravo! A great reminder to the fans of the series and a recommendation to those who haven't seen it yet. Thank you!
All the best man.
a beautiful love letter to a amazing show. Can't wait for more great stuff from you man!
How the hell does this not have multiple millions of views. This is such a quality video
This brought such a smile to my face. Haven’t watched it in years, but it’s such an magnificent story and great show.
You are real talent and I think it’s only a matter of time until you break out of TH-cam...
this is a really well written video essay! very accurate and deep without spoiling a thing too
bloody hell mate, this video is beautiful, thank you so very much *hands him a fistful of woolongs*
And now I'm crying all over my keyboard. Thank you for reminding me how much I love this show. Great essay.
You deserve millions of views, absolutely stunning work. Love every single one of your videos.
Bepop was my introduction into Anime, Dandy was the cement that is my love for this artstyle. So damm good.
I'm much the same way. Trigun isn't a bad way to spend some time, but if you enjoy Fantasy watch Berserk and Overlord. I can't get enough of either.
If you want an inventive world, try Twelve Kingdoms. If you want top notch character drama, watch Ping Pong the Animation. And if you need another romp in space, Banner of the Stars is very nice.
I would recommend Evangelion and FLCL season 1
I don't believe it was rushed, to me it seems that Spike's luck had ran out as he set out on his last adventure.
Samurai champloo or baccano
I heard of cowboy bepop in college. I was either too busy or maybe just watching a few episodes with friends I wasn't really paying enough attention. Maybe i was too young
I finished cowboy bepop for the first time yesterday, and I've seen plenty of R rated anime film by this point but this show has the most relatable adult themes I've ever seen. What a masterpeice. And theres a movie!? Must get my hands on it
This was like watching the entire series in twenty minutes! Great review capturing one of my favorite animes of all time.
Can I just say the title of this is freaking fantastic? I love it because it really fits the style of Bebop as almost a future age western.
"Its snarling jazz soundtrack was (if you'll excuse the pun) instrumental in thematically grounding the series."
I will not excuse the pun.
Wow that was great, you are talented!
Great homage to a fantastic out of this world anime.
Thank you, it feels bittersweet to look back with this retrospective. Cowboy Bebop will forever have a place in my heart.
"excuse me for going on quite as long as I did"
Man, add another hour and I'd watch every second!
This is without a doubt the finest retrospective I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. Thank you for reminding me of all those wonderful late night adult swim viewings.
oh wow......your use of music and your analysis is so nostalgic and beautiful! thank you so much for the wonderful video
Cowboy bebop is one of the few anime that you appreciate even more so years after watching it the first time ⚡️
This was an extremely well done retrospective, you described it perfectly when you talked about repeat watches, "it only makes sense then to go back to the beginning and feel at home once more" described it perfectly for me.
Beyond Ghibli - inadvertently serving as an anchor, an outpost, and now a frontier Fort and Station, for those of us in certain tribes we know within, but have yet to Name and, later, raise our Flag for.
happy yer here . . . Space Coyboys

I actually let loose a tear at "See you space cowboy".
What a truly beautiful video!
Rewatching the series in anticipation of the live-action and boy can't I wait.
Watching this is still better than all 10hours of the live action combined.
Great retrospective video. I remember watching this amazing show when it first came to the US. I was in college, and like college Bebop seemed like a blend of all worlds. Not many shows can become timeless the same way Cowboy Bebop did.
"Pierrot Le Fou" is by far my favorite episode hands down
This video gave me chills. Just finished Cowboy Bebop for the first time yesterday. It is a beautiful amalgamation of genres, music, and characters. Can't wait to rewatch it when I am looking to return to the Bebop.
I've waited so long for this and u did not disappoint on this essay. I thank you BG
Having watched the show multiple times in each language, I would highly recommend watching both. Multiple times. In each language.
Thank you for this cover. It brings back memories, sweet and bitter, everything comes flooding down.
