I think what bands people should start with depends on the genre of music they currently listen to. For example, for pop fans I'd recommend hair metal bands like Motley Crue and Twisted Sister, for rap fans I'd recommend rap metal bands like Rage Against The Machine and Faith No More, for classic rock fans I'd recommend classic metal bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. You get the idea.
Angel of Death I agree, I like progressive rock quite a bit so what got me into metal was Dream Theater. It all depends on what you like, metal is pretty diverse as far as sub genres go and if you're willing to look there's probably something you'll like.

Well this guy's putting his videos out there for free, it's his choice. He could put it on another website and give it a price, but he's put it on TH-cam. That means it's free to people, he's chosen that, as have all TH-camrs. He's not trying to put a price on it, you're not stealing his content by watching him. If you download some music for free, it's theft. If you're okay with that then go right ahead, but that's simply what it is. I just think it's a shitty attitude to have towards music, and if you believe that you should just TH-cam all your music, then maybe you don't care about it as much as you think. If you do it for Sabbath or Metallica, who don't need my 10 pounds, then people will start justifying that reason for bands that do. Bands often have to go more melodic simply to make a living, and the people who don't buy their records and then complain that they've 'sold out' have no right to complain. And then one day while looking for Maroon 5's This Love, I accidentally ended up listening to Pantera's This Love. Now that music did justice to Phil Anselmo's voice. I think Nightwish is one of the best bands to introduce to beginner metalheads. It's great but not too heavy. I made the mistake to introduce Wintersun as the first metal band to my girlfriend (since Wintersun is my favourite band), but she didn't quite get it.

My go to band and album i would suggest would be Megadeth Rust in peace. Its just one of the best albums ever made. Its well organized. Not too extreme at. Clean yet rough vocals and god damn some of the best riffs and solos you'll ever hear. But yeah the classics or the more poppy power metal isnt a band idea. Alestorm, primal fear, dragon force. Stuff like that. On another note, dont view patreon and shit like that as pan handling. You arent asking for money with nothing in return. You're offering entertainment or information or whatever. started with korn way back in 98' when I was 13 then moved onto slipknot then went to maiden, metallica (80's), slayer, dream theatre, tool, lamb of god, cattle decapitation etc... that my journey.you can't force it, has to be organic
Starting with the the "first" bands of heavy metal is a great advice, but I would advice against buying albums right at the start. Just search youtube for Iron Maiden, or Black Sabbath, or Judas Priest or Metallica or anything and just look at the songs that pop up first. If you like them then look at the albums they are form and if you like that album then you can buy it knowing that that's what you wanna spend your money on. Some more "easy" bands that I'd suggest looking at for starters are: Nightwish, Sabaton, Hammerfall, Manowar, Rammstein, Disturbed. Many people I know started liking heavy metal from those bands. Me for example I started from "Shitty Metallica albums" like Load and Reload and the black album(Metallica is the name, it's actually good). Those albums have tamer songs like Unforgiven 1 and 2 and Nothing Else Matters.
I say start with MESHUGGAAAAAAAH jk don't really, but seriously, I think Mastodon would be a pretty good start (recent Mastodon, not old Mastodon. Like, preferably Once More Round The Sun, but anything from Crack The Skye on is a great start for non-metalheads)

The first time extreme metal ever clicked for me was the first time I heard “The Flesh and the Power it Holds” from Death’s The Sound of Perseverance. It was a nice bridge because the song is very thrashy and complex. It absolutely blew my head off. I’m a classical musician who only listens to metal outside of classical music, and from Death I went to Bathory, Deicide, Morbid Angel, Darkthrone, Burzum, etc. RIP Quorthon and Chuck. Thank you for your music.

I started with Gorgoroth! To be fair I have been introduced to metal in the past but I think Gorgoroth is a good introduction to black metal especially if you already like doom metal I think.
Blind Guardian is the best band ever. Somewhere Far Beyond and Tales from the Twilight World are my favorite albums. Nightfall in Middle Earth and Follow the Blind are really close though.
BG is by far my favourite band, my favourite albums are At The Edge of Time and Somewhere Far Beyond, with "Wheel of Time", "Tanelorn(Into the void)", "Valhalla" and "Somewhere Far Beyond" being my favourite songs. I can also say that for me its the only band that doesn't have a shitty song, they are all so fucking amazing
Blind Guardian is by far one of the best. But I'd argue Nightfall as a starting point based on who's getting into it for the first time. Nightfall is epic, no doubt. But if it's a typical metal fan, I'd start off with Imaginations. If it's someone new to metal, maybe check out Somewhere Far Beyond. If it's someone who's a metal head and also a major nerd (me) than Nightfall because of the heavy Tolkien subject matter. No matter which way, Blind Guardian is always a good way to go.
My step dad first got me started with Judas Priest when I was like 4 or 5 then he showed me the video game brutal legend which introduced me into more stuff. Him and my mom then divorced when I was 8 and I stoped with metal and moved to rap like Eminem and other 90s rap then I got into dubstep and trap. Trap lead me into beatboxing and I learned how to beatbox and I’m not that bad so far. About 1 year ago I got back into metal and I was getting bored of the old stuff that I used to listen to when I was younger so I went searching for harder stuff. I found out about a shit ton of bands after that and started listening to stuff like tool, slipknot, cannibal corpse, exodus, and a butch of other shit and the crazy part is that there wasn’t a slight progression of metal that I listened to. Well, I am a bit silly. But I use this kind of tone in my sentence just to not hurt somebody. I think that Metallica is a very successful for a reason. It is very accessible to everyone. But musically I don't like it very much. The drums are kind of sloppy, to weak and not very complicated (well, when you listen to death and black metal, you tend to be very demanding in performance). The bass is not present enough in a lot of their songs. I was in these type of voices but not any more. The only thing I could like with them is that they have good riffs, I love the master of puppets riff, but not the drums. And then, there is also the message. At first, Metallica was a thrash metal band. Some say there are still part of the Big Four, well I think it is only a Big Three. They are doing heavy metal. Even if Slayer is not at all the same, with the loss of their guitarist, they still not do heavy metal nor power metal. And they have political messages in their lyrics, like in South of heaven or in Angel of death. I do not see a political message in Nothing else matters... Well, a song does not require to have a political message, to be politically engaged, and you would be right to say that. But, thrash metal is a genre with punk roots. And once bank without a political message, I would say nothing. But, I can understand very well the people like this band, it is just that I have a certain way of seeing music, that hopefully, I do not share with everyone because everyone is different and that is something I would never change.

Same for me. It all started when my dad put the Back In Black album on the CD player and said "check this out". I remember how the bells began to toss and the guitar started playing in Hells Bells. Now I've come a long way from Hard Rock to Black Metal, from Power Metal to Death Metal, from Pink Floyd to Amon Amarth, from Jimi Hendrix to HammerFall. And there have been so many great bands that I've discovered from that day and I plan to keep discovering. I am forever Thankful to my dad and AC/DC.

3:43 this was the album (compilation) that slowly got me into metal. I found the CD on a store shelf when I was around 8 years old and my mom (who enjoys rock music and basic heavy metal) agreed to get it for me. I would spend countless days listening to that compilation and still have it with me today. Looking through the various cover art included in the booklet while listening to the live version of Phanom Of The Opera is still my favorite thing to do. I even got my dad slightly into metal by playing 2 Minutes To Midnight and The Trooper as he played some fps game or some game of a similar nature. That compilation is the right place to start for people who are familiar with rock classics and want to get into metal. \m/

Absolutely not true, music can certainly grow on you. A few years ago, I listened to rock and hard rock (guns n roses / acdc were my "heaviest"). Then I came across iron maiden, listened to their greatest hits and those grew on me after 1 or 2 weeks. Afterwards, I started listening their entire discography and loved all their 80's albums. Next, I moved to judas priest, metallica, disturbed, even rammstein. As of now, I like metal more than rock/hard rock. So... how would you call that? ;)

At my old job, our supervisor would let us listen to music while we worked. The person who was supplying the music was primarily into hip hop and reggaeton, but I politely requested "Moonlight Rendezvous" by Beast in Black. The following day when he put the music on, I was delighted to find that it stayed on his playlist (he dug the beat and was understandably impressed by the vocals). Well this guy's putting his videos out there for free, it's his choice. He could put it on another website and give it a price, but he's put it on TH-cam. That means it's free to people, he's chosen that, as have all TH-camrs. He's not trying to put a price on it, you're not stealing his content by watching him. If you download some music for free, it's theft. If you're okay with that then go right ahead, but that's simply what it is.
I just think it's a shitty attitude to have towards music, and if you believe that you should just TH-cam all your music, then maybe you don't care about it as much as you think. If you do it for Sabbath or Metallica, who don't need my 10 pounds, then people will start justifying that reason for bands that do. Bands often have to go more melodic simply to make a living, and the people who don't buy their records and then complain that they've 'sold out' have no right to complain. If Ozzy were to arise in 2016, and say Black Sabbath had a different vocalist and everything else was the same, who's to say he wouldn't be struggling rn.

I think Nightwish is one of the best bands to introduce to beginner metalheads. It's great but not too heavy. I made the mistake to introduce Wintersun as the first metal band to my girlfriend (since Wintersun is my favourite band), but she didn't quite get it.

My go to band and album i would suggest would be Megadeth Rust in peace. Its just one of the best albums ever made. Its well organized. Not too extreme at. Clean yet rough vocals and god damn some of the best riffs and solos you'll ever hear.

Starting with the the "first" bands of heavy metal is a great advice, but I would advice against buying albums right at the start. Just search youtube for Iron Maiden, or Black Sabbath, or Judas Priest or Metallica or anything and just look at the songs that pop up first. If you like them then look at the albums they are form and if you like that album then you can buy it knowing that that's what you wanna spend your money on. Some more "easy" bands that I'd suggest looking at for starters are: Nightwish, Sabaton, Hammerfall, Manowar, Rammstein, Disturbed. Many people I know started liking heavy metal from those bands.
Me for example I started from "Shitty Metallica albums" like Load and Reload and the black album(Metallica is the name, it's actually good). Those albums have tamer songs like Unforgiven 1 and 2 and Nothing Else Matters.

The first time extreme metal ever clicked for me was the first time I heard “The Flesh and the Power it Holds” from Death’s The Sound of Perseverance. It was a nice bridge because the song is very thrashy and complex. It absolutely blew my head off. I’m a classical musician who only listens to metal outside of classical music, and from Death I went to Bathory, Deicide, Morbid Angel, Darkthrone, Burzum, etc.

Blind Guardian is the best band ever. Somewhere Far Beyond and Tales from the Twilight World are my favorite albums. Nightfall in Middle Earth and Follow the Blind are really close though.
BG is by far my favourite band, my favourite albums are At The Edge of Time and Somewhere Far Beyond, with "Wheel of Time", "Tanelorn(Into the void)", "Valhalla" and "Somewhere Far Beyond" being my favourite songs. Blind Guardian is by far one of the best. But I'd argue Nightfall as a starting point based on who's getting into it for the first time. Nightfall is epic, no doubt. But if it's a typical metal fan, I'd start off with Imaginations. If it's someone new to metal, maybe check out Somewhere Far Beyond. If it's someone who's a metal head and also a major nerd (me) than Nightfall because of the heavy Tolkien subject matter.
No matter which way, Blind Guardian is always a good way to go.

My step dad first got me started with Judas Priest when I was like 4 or 5 then he showed me the video game brutal legend which introduced me into more stuff. Him and my mom then divorced when I was 8 and I stoped with metal and moved to rap like Eminem and other 90s rap then I got into dubstep and trap. Trap lead me into beatboxing and I learned how to beatbox and I’m not that bad so far. About 1 year ago I got back into metal and I was getting bored of the old stuff that I used to listen to when I was younger so I went searching for harder stuff. I found out about a shit ton of bands after that and started listening to stuff like tool, slipknot, cannibal corpse, exodus, and a butch of other shit and the crazy part is that there wasn’t a slight progression of metal that I listened to. I went from Judas Priest straight to slipknot in about a week.

Well, I am a bit silly. But I use this kind of tone in my sentence just to not hurt somebody. I think that Metallica is a very successful for a reason. It is very accessible to everyone. But musically I don't like it very much. The drums are kind of sloppy, to weak and not very complicated (well, when you listen to death and black metal, you tend to be very demanding in performance). The bass is not present enough in a lot of their songs. I was in these type of voices but not any more. The only thing I could like with them is that they have good riffs, I love the master of puppets riff, but not the drums.
And then, there is also the message. At first, Metallica was a thrash metal band. Some say there are still part of the Big Four, well I think it is only a Big Three. They are doing heavy metal. Even if Slayer is not at all the same, with the loss of their guitarist, they still not do heavy metal nor power metal. And they have political messages in their lyrics, like in South of heaven or in Angel of death. I do not see a political message in Nothing else matters... Well, a song does not require to have a political message, to be politically engaged, and you would be right to say that. But, thrash metal is a genre with punk roots. And once bank without a political message, I would say nothing.
But, I can understand very well the people like this band, it is just that I have a certain way of seeing music, that hopefully, I do not share with everyone because everyone is different and that is something I would never change.

I started with Alestorm and now I’m mostly into Thrash metal, also beginning to get into death/black more especially Death and Behemoth.
Amazing bands dude, try listening to morbid angel and obituary great bands if your in to death 🤘🏻🤘🏻 very old school, for black metal try immortal, darkthrone, that's fun too

The band that got me into metal/rock has to be AC/DC they're my favorite band of all time I have all of their albums and if someone would recommend me to hear a band AC/DC has to be it
Same for me. It all started when my dad put the Back In Black album on the CD player and said "check this out". I remember how the bells began to toss and the guitar started playing in Hells Bells. Now I've come a long way from Hard Rock to Black Metal, from Power Metal to Death Metal, from Pink Floyd to Amon Amarth, from Jimi Hendrix to HammerFall. And there have been so many great bands that I've discovered from that day and I plan to keep discovering. I am forever Thankful to my dad and AC/DC.

Now 6 years later I have every AC/DC album, have a Epiphone SG, and learned myself to play every AC/DC song :)

3:43 this was the album (compilation) that slowly got me into metal. I found the CD on a store shelf when I was around 8 years old and my mom (who enjoys rock music and basic heavy metal) agreed to get it for me. I would spend countless days listening to that compilation and still have it with me today. Looking through the various cover art included in the booklet while listening to the live version of Phanom Of The Opera is still my favorite thing to do. I even got my dad slightly into metal by playing 2 Minutes To Midnight and The Trooper as he played some fps game or some game of a similar nature. That compilation is the right place to start for people who are familiar with rock classics and want to get into metal. \m/
Bout a year ago I was listening to stuff like Fall Out Boy and Imagine Dragons. Now i listen to stuff like Alestorm, Abbath, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Amon Amarth, Exodus, Megadeth, Immortal and Powerwolf.

No. I used to hate classical music because it was all fancy but then I started listening to symphonic and Fleshgod apocalypse and then I got into classical music as a whole.

That's actually true, if you are interested in metal you just search for bands, if you like them, good, but if you don't like the first band you listen to doesn't mean that you will automatically stop searching.
Absolutely not true, music can certainly grow on you.
A few years ago, I listened to rock and hard rock (guns n roses / acdc were my "heaviest"). Then I came across iron maiden, listened to their greatest hits and those grew on me after 1 or 2 weeks. Afterwards, I started listening their entire discography and loved all their 80's albums. Next, I moved to judas priest, metallica, disturbed, even rammstein. As of now, I like metal more than rock/hard rock. So... how would you call that? ;)

I started my girlfriend off with the Misfits. 6 months after I bought her Famous Monsters we've been to see Anthrax, Slayer, Iron Maiden, BMTH, Black Sabbath and a load of other bands.

You're so right about growing out of emotional angst-ridden lyrics. It took me a long time to get back into metal after realising that it was actually about stuff, just like prog rock.
I started out with emo music like MCR, P!ATD, BVB, PTV, TØP, SWS when I was around 10. Later I started listening to Green Day, Nirvana, A7X, MIW and other metalcore bands. Then I got into some rock/metal classics and started listening to deathmetal. I started out with Arch Enemy, At The Gates and Cannibal Corpse. That's kind of how it all started.

now? black metal like panopticon and saor, winterfyleth etc, and i also like some mdm bands like Black Dahlia Murder, but before I started listening to those bands I used to listen to PTV, and I still do like that band, idc if its "metal" or not I just listen to it because i like the music

At my old job, our supervisor would let us listen to music while we worked. The person who was supplying the music was primarily into hip hop and reggaeton, but I politely requested "Moonlight Rendezvous" by Beast in Black.
The following day when he put the music on, I was delighted to find that it stayed on his playlist (he dug the beat and was understandably impressed by the vocals). I hold no illusions that I made this very flamboyant Latinx guy into a metalhead, but as you said, baby steps!!
