Lots of old school bands hardly curse if at all. Power metal and heavy metal tends to be clean.

Viscount Alex of the Horse People from Mars I couldn't agree more! My favorite subgenre is power metal. In fact many of the fantasy themes that they sing about are things that kids really love and enjoy.

I’m 14 and love death and black metal, this had led to me being told that the music will destroy my “young, impressionable” mind by a random woman who saw me in the street wearing a cannibal corpse t shirt. I don’t think age dictates who should and shouldn’t listen to metal, it depends on maturity and who can appreciate the music.

Today's kids... Every decade it's always today's kids.
They were saying the same thing in the 80's and 90's and how the rappers "look like criminals". They just look like normal people to me. We know many of them are black and that is the only thing people see which is why racial profiling is a thing.
What does a criminal look like? A guy in a suit is more likely to be a criminal.
People love throwing one genre under the bus, drugs and sex aren't exclusive to one genre. They've been in music before any rap was around. Video games also have them and they're much more influential as you get to interact. There's games that have you taking drugs and selling them. Lots of games are sexual. Then we have TV shows. Breaking Bad is all about the drugs and people are rooting for a guy who gets rich off making drugs for people to get hooked on. Nobody is complaining about that though.

Well, I think that as long as kids understand how to interpret it and that a fraction of metal is fictional, it shouldn't be a problem. My argument over the years has always been to look at hip-hop. It is FULL of profanities, sexuality, and English that isn't even English, yet they have kids doing hip hop in gym class. I find that hypocritical, personally. When I was growing up as a teenager several years ago, metal helped me improve my vocabulary. The language used in metal is really good. But in pop songs and rap songs, it is all slang. And, metal challenges certain things at an intellectual level which gets people thinking, which is good I say. I think it is a double standard all together. Metal needs to be appreciated more in society. It's been around for almost fifty years.

To be honest, this hatred for rap and hip hop pisses me off (I distinguish between rap and hip hop because hip hop is the style of music, rap is the style of vocals). And not all hip hop is the same drug and crime glorifying gangsta rap just like not all metal contains graphic depictions of slaughter just because that happens to be the case with some bands, especially in death and potentially black metal. And I'd say that a lot of rap uses really complex language with a focus on complicated rhyme schemes largely not consisting of slang. For an example, I'd recommend Stan by Eminem. Beautifully dark with beautiful storytelling.

Well said! When I was in 5th grade, I got in trouble for bringing a Rob Zombie CD into to school and listening to it on the school bus. Yet some of my classmates brought in rap CD’s and that was overlooked. I mentioned that hypocrisy to the principal.

I am a mother. My daughter is 4 years old. I listen to Metal ALL the time. Always. She hears more curse words from me and my family, than she does Metal. (Yes we make sure she doesn't go around cursing at people tho) I think kids can handle Metal for sure. Mine can. She throws up the horns whenever it's on. Even headbangs but she also listens to shitty pop, and I'm okay with that. It's whatever she's feeling. I'd rather she listen to Metal than be exposed to porn. I personally feel like most of hip hop and rap talks too much about drugs and sex. I think that would affect them more than Metal would. So as a "Metal Mom" I think Metal is completely okay. 🤘 Stay brutal!

I'm a metalhead who's planning to have children quite soon with a girl not into metal. We together agree that our children will have a mind of their own, and they can listen to whatever music they like. We're not the ones to decide that, as music is of no harm to anyone with no tendency of thinking fictional stuff is real. I obviously am going to play metal since that's my music of choice, so our children will be hearing that from a very early age. They will soon realize that even with the aggressiveness it's just music.

I say it depends on the band. Obviously, vands like Vulvodynia or Cannibal Corpse are not child friendly by any means. But others, like Iron Maiden, I think are perfectly fine. The genre as a whole isn’t necessarily inappropriate.

I got into metal when I was around 11. I told my mom I wanted to listen to metal bands, so she bought me a few CDs of bands that she knew were considered metal when she was in college (Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc.) She was not into metal at all, so it meant a lot that she went out of her way to do that. If a parent can be cool with modern pop music, I don't see why metal should be an issue. Both can contain lyrical content that is questionable. Hell, I saw a 6 year old at an Amon Amarth show who was having the best time!

(Ghost could be a great starting band) Lyrics doesn't really matter, because when you're a kid you don't care about the text (at least I didn't) they just sing along to what they like. Is this seriously a question? I was a metalhead in utero!
Some of us are just born this way. My father died when I was five, so death in music was obviously only a literary device. I dress like a preacher's wife, most of the time, simply because it's practical. "Even then, I was suffering for my art" Rob Halford admits sporting "the look" can be quite uncomfortable. For those who assume Metal is a distilled version of Rock music, and therefore ultra-misogynistic, it is always my pleasure to inform them that I've experienced waaay more assault at country and rock shows that I ever have at metal gigs. I will happily and confidently walk into a Metallica, or Pantera show alone, but I wouldn't dare let a friend go to a Zac Brown Band or Florida/Georgia Line show by herself (that's how I ended up going).

My dad used to play me slipknot and black sabbath when I was still in the womb😂
I’m 13 now and I have loved this music since I was born. When I was 4 I knew the lyrics to most of the Metallica discography. Yes, at school I get picked on because of my love of metal. Most narrow minded people at my school say that it’s all based on gore and death, and to some extent it is, but that’s only a minority. Metal has so many layers and so many different meanings. Music like pop is so superficial and there is nothing beneath the surface of it.
Pop music is like scissors, it always gets beaten by rock😜🤘

As a parent, I'll say that it depends. I've always had my son around metal (he could do a pretty great death metal growl of twinkle twinkle little star when he was 2 or 3). Most music, I've never had any real issues. There's some black metal that i didn't play around him until he was a teenager, but, it was kind of like there's some movies you don't watch around children depending on their maturity at the time. Have to say though, family road trip from Calgary to Vancouver during the middle of the school year to go see Sabaton, Nightwish, and Delain when he was 9 or 10 was pretty great. Even his teachers were really excited about him going. Big part of being a parent is helping and encouraging your child to grow, explore, and follow their own paths. At a younger age, just have to hold the reigns a little more. As for myself, I was raised with musically opposite parents, much like my son is. I grew up on a solid foundation of Metallica, Megadeth, Kenny Rogers, and Johnny Cash, and really, can't remember my parents ever ever yelling at me with the exception of a little bit of Offspring and Guttermouth.

I first started listening to soad at 10, then in middle school I got really into post hardcore or screamo or whatever with bands like Bring me the Horizon, Asking Alexandria, Escape the Fate etc.
Then towards that end of middle school at 8th grade I got into deathcore with bands like Chelsea grin and rose funeral.
I remember sometime in that grade I listened to cannibal corpse and really liked it. The rest is history pretty much. Nowadays I'm into heavy, thrash and black metal.

Way too long of a story of how I discovered and how I got into metal, but I was 10. I had just moved to St. Catharines from Brantford and Metal was brought to my attention. I loved it, my parents didn't mind that I was listening to metal. I started with 80's Hair Bands and gradually got into heavier and heavier bands. So, metal started for me when I was 10 in 1984. In my years I did meet and know some kids who weren't allowed to listen to metal because of their religious parents and that made no sense to me, so I started asking questions about religion and it just pissed me off. I'm 44 now and have been listening to metal since I was 10. Besides my ADHD (which gives me hyperfocus with music) my Severe Anxiety and Mild Depression, metal didn't affect me in a negative way, it actually acted as a therapeutic tool for me. The themes in metal can actually help kids feel that they aren't alone and others can relate to them.
I could go on forever about metal, but I don't want to bore you.
I see that your mailing address is Brantford, I was born in Brantford, most of my family lives in Brantford, like I mentioned in my long ass paragraph I lived in Brantford till I was 10 years old and I visit family a few times a year.
Your PO Box is listed as West Brant, I lived in West Brant, down the street from RIverview Elementary School. Brantford still holds a special place in my heart.

Power and Symphonic Metal are what I would use with children. It always appeals to them because of the magical themes and fantasy it entails. I think it's best to start them on such genres (even old school). Around 13, when they begin to deal with heavier problems like bullying, peer pressure: Just generalizing the high school issues, then I'd introduce them to genres that treat with darker and heavier topics.

My mom listens to several genres, my favorites were the doors, deep purple, pink floyd and alice cooper. (Guess some michael jackson-mostly the songs with a deeper meaning like earth song, they don't really care about us, human nature, to name a few, and from madonna I still enjoy frozen.) When I was 8 my favorite song was poison from alice cooper, I further explored the metal genre after I turned 13, I fell in love with the music, later on I discovered some punk bands, some goa and reggae, jazz/bluess, folk music (irish, scotish, american,). I just really enjoy music, but if you think about it the top40 lists that are played on the radio are also quite sexual lyric wise, but that is fine since it's all on the same beat and progression in general. (In the mind of the mainstream person) my mom never made an issue about what music I would listen to. (Plus when I was a kid I was allready contemplating about the universe, our exsistence in it, why there was so much hate and wars shown on the 18:00 news. Everyday. I wondered why so many had to suffer while others don't, I didn't want protection from reality, I wanted to understand reality. And listen to different genre's of music is helped me a great deal in my search, though I'm still not close to an answer. I think kids should be exposed to a bit more extremer stuff instead of being overprotected and sheltered from the outside. The real world is a harsh and cruel place, and people should be prepared for that as much as possible. I was given a lot of responsibilty as a child and even I feel like I went from the kiddipool right into big scary ocean in the blink of an eye. I don't want to know what people who have been overprotected by their parents felt when they had to transition to the real world.

One year later I would get into metal through Metallica (first thing I actually listened to was Kill em all) and shit like this. Actually back than my mom was _strongly_ against Metallica and metal in general. She got mad at me a few times, worse than ever before. She was and is nearly always chill and not strict at all, but she thought that music would fuck me up. My parents were quite supportive especially my father since he was is and has been a Fan of Rock nroll, blues, classic rock etc since He was a teen. But mom was not far behind. My father was introducing me into metal (especially power and folk) since I was born. He was showing me all the Nightwish's music videos, which were beautiful btw, and anywhere we were going by car he always played some CD's of Nightwish or Korpiklaani. By now, I am introducing my younger brother who is in the age of 13 to folk and melodic death metal bands like Eluveitie, Amon Amarth or Dethklok. For me, without metal in my life I would have grown up as a typical teenage alcoholic listening to Polish rap (yes, I am Polish). In my country there are tons of kids which already are addicted to alcohol, or worse - drugs. I am really glad for my dad for getting me into metal and funfact: when I was coming to this world, my dad was listening to some heavy stuff in the corridor :-)

Thanks to my dad, I've been listening to metal pretty much my entire life. I think that he was pretty reasonable with with how much he exposed me to ( skipping certain songs, not giving me direct answers to questions I had about them, turning off music videos if I found them scary, etc. ). I think part of that comes back to what you said about kids understanding what they feel like they should or shouldn't be seeing.
Now that I've gotten older and started exploring the scene on my own I think it's interesting to look back on. From 3rd grade onward I would be wearing shirts to school he got me at concerts and listening to the music he put on an mp3 player for me. Now I'm in college and making my own battle vests and discovering bands on my own. I still surprise him every now and then when he learns what I've started listening over the past few years. 😂

Excellent topic BMW. I have a seven year old son and I've listened to metal tracks with him and watched metal videos. He particularly liked Sabaton's 'Primo Victoria'. But with some of the songs that featured harsh vocals he wasn't so impressed, "I can't understand what they're talking about dad.' Still, a little while later that day, he started doing 'harsh vocals' himself. I had to laugh ! He's exposed to bad language at school and at times on the internet but I take the time to remind him that it's not appropriate for someone of his age to be using bad language and he's fine with that. The horror aspect is fine with me. I loved horror when I was his age and we've even watched horror films together. I keep reminding him that it's all fake, that nobody dies and all the monsters are just guys in costumes or CGI. There are things I do shelter him from but metal isn't one of them.

I still love heidevolk and i was interested initially because they sang about history very local to me, and it felt good to have songs about the place i'd lived my whole life. Metal turned me into a reasonably respected/feared (not that i'd hurt a fly) kid in high school which left my largely unaffected by bullying and overall i'd say it's been a very positive thing for me. As long as the kid doesnt become too much of an elitist it'll be all good imo.

My kids have always listened to what I listen to and have their own likes on music. My dad started me out on Black Sabbath don’t know when I just know it was when I was young. I became a full fledged metal head at around 13.

Good stuff, I've got kids im trying to get into heavy metal, and i agree with all your points, nothing wrong with it at all, just bring them up with good valuesand all will be good.

My dad showed me the black album and ac/dc when i was 3-4 years old. If a kid starts with this or even something more speedy (like metallica's first albums) it's a great thing!
Because specially in my country (bulgaria), the most trending stuff right now are *opens trending section* a song called "photoshop", "anaconda" and some pieces of shit, who sing for cocaine (literally there's a song called that way). Everything here has something to do with curse words, sexually explicit content, singing for innappropriate things and other..
In my opinion metal is -much- billions times better than pop and chalga in Bulgaria, for everyone, not only kids.

Started listening to Iron Maiden and Sabaton when I was 14. I quickly grew to love a bunch of metal bands, and eventually I fell in love with black metal aged 15. I let my mom listen to it, she hates the sound of it but totally encourages me to enjoy myself going to shows with friends and listening to extreme music. She thinks it's my taste and that I should choose for myself what I listen to, what shirts I wear and so on. As long as I like it, she supports it. I'm lucky I guess ;)
