Excellent beginners guide. Doesn't go too awful deep and covers the best things to look at to decide whether you like metal or not. I decided long ago my favorite genres were hair metal and NWOBHM or british heavy metal with my favorites being Dokken and Saxon respectively. But it took me years of digging into the main popular stuff before diving headfirst into it. And props to shouting out GTA Vice City. It was one of the things that took me down the classic metal rabbit hole
I'm a metalhead beginner, so... I'm glad to find an opportunity here. I recently listened to the Meatloaf the bat from hell third album, and it definitely goes hard
Some thoughts on the video: 1. You forgot to mention doom metal, sludge metal, funk metal, alternative metal, grindcore, drone metal, power metal, progressive metal, post-metal, powerviolence, and avant-garde metal (I know there’s more but I’m stopping there). Also I know that you briefly touched on black metal but it would’ve been neat if you went into a little more detail about that subgenre. 2. Deftones are a solid band to get into nu metal and Converge are a good place to start if you wanna get into metalcore. 3. A few album recommendations from me: Boris at Last Feedbacker by Boris Dopethrone by Electric Wizard Leviathan by Mastodon Obscura by Gorguts Epicus Doomicus Metallicus by Candlemass Filosofem by Burzum Jane Doe by Converge Overall, great video. Metal is a very interesting genre to get into.
Here are some metal albums I'd recommend are: Tool: Ænima (there's good metal albums like 10,000 Days, Undertow, and Lateralus as well to get into Tool, let alone, progressive metal in general) Baroness: Purple (easily the most universally accepted metal album of all time, which is also a great progressive metal band to get into the genre as well) Mastodon: Crack the Skye (yet another great progressive metal album to get into as well) Helmet: Meantime & Betty (while they can be heavy as hell, there's melodic songs like Unsung and Milquetoast) Deftones: White Pony (an extremely good way to start with not just the band, but also a good way to get into metal in general) Hatebreed: The Rise of Brutality (truly one of the original pioneers of metalcore that gets overlooked. It's aggressive as hell, but has motivational lyrics onto the music itself over the years) Blue Öyster Cult: Agents of Fortune (Pretty sure people who listen to classic rock radio stations would recognize "Don't Fear the Reaper". Truly a good way to get into metal) Rush: Moving Pictures & Permanent Waves (they are actually a metal band that is part of the Metal Archives, but they can also help people to get into progressive rock and metal alike in general. It's a shame to hear about how Neil Peart has passed away. R.I.P. Neil, may you rest well in Heaven) NOTE: I got the first three from another TH-cam comment from a WatchMojo video (comment all you want), but they are good recommendations to newcomers, nonetheless.
as i venture further into metal i am quickly realizing i have been listening to it for years with out realizing it. i think this is because of what was mentioned, metal is such a diverse genre and blends easily with other genres
Symphonic metal is my favorite genre of metal thanks to bands like Evanescence, Within Temptation, Nightwish, Epica, Leaves' Eyes, Delain, Lacuna Coil, Apocalypitca and many others that introduced me to metal music. I usually listen to dance, pop, rock and techno but symphonic metal has a special place in my heart and I'm still open minded to listening to all kinds of music.
everyone's experiences is different but I easily got into metal just listening to "battlefield" by the blind guardian. I was introduced to metal in 7th grade and that was my first metal song in the game robot unicorn attack. I don't listen to metal as much anymore since 8th grade because my music preferences changed, but every once in a while I'll listen to some black metal like ACxDC.
I remember that i got into metal by listening to sabaton and when i asked my brother to buy me a sabaton shirt at a local fare or whatever it's called he got me some metallica shirts, later in highschool a friend pointed it out as a band shirt and got me to listen to metal from the very basics being black sabbath.
I love Bullet for My Valentine, which I discovered through old NFS and Motorstorm. I'm looking to expand a bit and this video is just what I was hoping to find. Thx for making it.
Hey, man! I’ve been trying really hard to get into metal, but I’m really bad at listening to new music, and this vid has helped so much!!! Also, as a queer kid, it’s nice to see another queer person in the scene :)
My introduction into metal music was through Linkin Park/Nu Metal. Then, all in three years, I started to venture out towards mathcore and technical metal. I’m now getting enthused with prog metal.
Excellent video, man. Albums I would personally recommend to people starting out listening to metal are The Last Temptation by Alice Cooper, Back For The Attack by Dokken, and Screaming for Vengeance by Judas Priest.
I also did a video myself on how people can get into death metal and yeah I agree it just proves that regardless of what someone identifies as it does not determine their music taste anyway nor how talented a musician is
For the Load/Reload albums, the tracks that stand out from the two are Ain't My B**ch and Fuel. Fuel, mainly because it relects their speed and thrash metal roots while still keeping up with the then-current era in their career.
All my teenage years were in the 80s so I remember a lot of metal from that time when it was new. When I first heard of Slayer their newest album at the time was Reign in Blood, but didn't see them live until the Seasons in the Abyss tour. Slayer fans at a Slayer show Yell SLAYER! before the show and after the show. But not just that, even at a King Diamond show I heard them yelling SLAYER! so I joined in naturally. I discovered the vast majority of my bands by going to my local music store and flipping through all the records, even back before the days of CDs. For a true metal fan there will be no need for a beginner guide. They will find it on their own just fine.
Here's an interesting fact, even though it's now knowledge to many within the metal community that Rob Halford is a gay man, but back then, he was closeted, yet he took the idea of wearing the kind of leather he got from some kind of store, don't remember which though, but before metal, leather was often associated with the gay community thanks to disco, or motorcycle organizations within the U.S.
As someone whos been into metal since few weeks old, when youre beginner to metal you should listen to bands such as Nocturnal Goatvomit, Effluence, Tetragrammacide, Kapala, Brahmastrika and Damaar
Iron Maiden is the best way to start. Listening to emo and metalcore was my gateway, and I was listening to Death, Carcass, At The Gates and Opeth in no time. But to this day I can not listen to black metal and grindcore. Or a lot of nu metal.
Im surprise you didnt mention guilty gear series for heavy metal in video games its a fighting game filled with references to rock and metal almost every characters theme is a different type of metal and rock song.
Hey man good video!! I’m new to metal myself and I was wondering if you or anyone in the comments section could answer some questions that I have? Thanks and keep up the great work!
A really underated thrash band is the Australian band allegiance give them a go if thrash is your favorite style they only have two albums destitution and skinman
If someone wants to trace the history of Heavy Metal...should go back to the year 1965 & listen to Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones Helter Skelter is a Hard Rock song...Revolution is a percursory metal song

I got into hard rock through skillet, and then I got into metal through mettalica
I just did a head first dive into black metal and I instantly liked it, idk how

Metallica - Master of Puppets
Megadeth - Hangar 18

Thanks. I've been wondering if Screamo or Nu Metal count as actual heavy metal music since my knowledge on heavy metal is actually kind of rusty.
Yes, nu metal is counted as a subgenre for metal. With screamo, I see it as a subgenre for punk/emo/(somewhat)hardcore.
