How to install MSPOSD on OpenIPC (covers the RunCam and Emax devices)

  • I enjoyed flying the RunCam and Emax OpenIPC offerings, but I couldn't get any Mavlink telemetry out of Betaflight, which meant I got no OSD. At one point I was counting in my head while flying to figure out my approximate battery. Instead of waiting for Betaflight to fix their Mavlink problem, instead we're going to use OpenIPC MSPOSD update and use MSP-Displayport for our OSD... which is very similar to the likes of DJI or Walksnail.

    That long command to debug your msposd process is this:
    msposd --master /dev/ttyS0 --baudrate 115200 --channels 8 --out 127.0.0.1:14555 -osd -r 20 --ahi 0 -v
    Two things I missed out (one I thought was too obvious to mention) is that you need to enable OSD in the configuration tab in Betaflight (that was the obvious one) The other is that when you set your port to MSP+Display port, make sure nothing else is selected. This didn't work for a user who also left the telemetry as Mavlink. So everything else should be blank - just as you see it in the video.

    Hi Curry Kitten, thank you very much for making a guide on how to enable OSD in OpenIPC, because I've been struggling with the Runcam wifilink - Radxa Zero 3W set for a month to get it on the screen (Betaflight 4.5.1 of course). I'm actively asking for a solution to the problem of all characters, numbers, letters appearing on the screen using Radxa, but so far (despite your guide) I still haven't gotten stable OSD readings on the screen via Radxa and MSPOSD. Now, after all you said, at least readings like core temperature, time, but also various strange characters appear and disappear in 1-2 seconds.
    Unfortunately, as you said at the end, your guide is chaotic and the steps you mention at the end don't explain exactly how to properly configure Runcam + Radxa + FC (in my case Speedybee F7 V3). HUGE REQUEST to you to record this guide again and step by step (preferably separately for Runcam and separately for Emax), because now it is unfortunately unclear. I think that HUNDREDS of people will be grateful to you for such a precise, STEP BY STEP guide, because all those that are available on TH-cam (and various forums) are inaccurate, skip steps, do not show exactly what the settings should be for Runcam (Emax) and Radxa. PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE for making a new step by step guide (and probably hundreds of other people, too). I would really like to use OpenIPC, but without OSD it is impossible, and as I wrote I HAVE BEEN FIGHTING WITH THIS FOR A MONTH and I am devastated.

      One problem in this is that I don't have a Radxa to test with. Another problem with all guides (and the reason I show me doing things wrong and getting issues) is that if you do a guide and it shows in 5 steps how to configure it, for all the people that say things like "mine didn't do that after step 3, what do I do".
      In your case, it must be seeing something, else you'd have the whole load of characters on the screen all the time. So I would say the things I would check in your case are the basics first: Have you setup a port as MSP+Display port, have you set up an OSD in Betaflight? I'm assuming you've at least updated your camera and installed MSPOSD on your RunCam, is the UART setup correct for the RunCam, and have you checked you are crossing your tx/rx. Do you have an msposd process running on your camera? Have you tried using the debug command I gave to make sure you are getting telemetry on that port? Did you remove the regular OSD on the radxa side of things - I don't touch on this in the video as it was mainly made for tablet/phone users, but I had to set the osd to non in the file in /etc which name escapes me right now, something with osd in the title. As I couldn't seem to alter the OSD in the configurator and have it take effect

      Yes. The benefit of using a network link is that iPhones would actually be able to run it as well. No nasty Mfi restrictions of using a cable

    I get the OSD with all the elements all over it. I am forsure wired tx/rx to rx/tx on uart1. set to HD osd and MSP digital out.
    I wired it as you show in your diagram. But if I change the ttys2 or enable uart0 my video goes away xP

    Hello, I would like to ask if my openipc camera does not have an ETH interface, how should I access the openipc configurator to change the osd settings?

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've not heard of an OpenIPC camera not having an ethernet port before. That's the way the configurator works - opening up an ssh session via it's IP address. If you have an SD card, then you could access files that way, but that's more of a manual command thing rather than using the configurator.

    ardupilot makes no sense to use with openipc? all instructions are for betaflight only...😢

    • @androwitch6071
      @androwitch6071 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is not that hard to set up osd in ardupilot. You can ask for help in the official OpenIpc group

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's not an intentional snub, just that most 5" quad flyers are on Betaflight, and i really haven't done much with Ardupilot
