The guy doing freestyle with this system is using a self build camera setup linked to a Linux ground station 😊 That said, I'm seeing claims of 35ms latency with the RadXa VRX, too.
I believe with faster processing on the receiver side, super low latency is definitely possible. I've been looking for a guide on how to build that Radxa VRX but not having any luck so far...

Great to see runcam releasing an open IPC beta product. 2 standoff on one side does seem risky 🤔. Sure the next future versions will be better in all ways, the build, latency, and eventually goggles. HDZERO is worthless. I burned 3 VTXes after only a few flights and then when I asked why they told me I must have done something wrong. Worthless products and worthless pilots!

Looks like they have half of the equation here. They need googles and a complete ground station solution. Using Android phones as a platform is a bit sketchy since the majority of android hardware is low quality and not very good as you have shown in this video. Also, it looks like the other ground station solutions either don't work or are difficult for most people to set up. Like you said, this is early days so hopefully progress will be quick here. Currently I could see this geared towards RC cars and planes. IMO, FPV drones requires goggles and I dont see how this easily integrates into existing goggles even if there was an HDMI option, it would just be too messy. I already saw someone make a VRX like the Walksnail one and plugged into his HDZERO goggles via HDMI and he said latency is as good as DJI O3 which is kinda insane.

@@frankcastillo8869 To be honest hdzero is great for what it's meant to be used for: racing. And for the rest you can use it, but it's maybe not the best for the other styles of flying.
Imagine getting this tech into all those cheap drones sending vid to android phones already just with huge latency. That market is massive and if they could mass produce a simpler smaller version of this whith all done in an Android app this could be BIG. One can now get cheap Orange pi boards with Android as receivers. All we lack now is a miniscule plug'n play TX.
We should know more in a few months. RunCam and EMAX are already working on hardware so there's definitely more companies working under the radar on this for sure.

That setup sounds strange, not sure I follow. There are videos available showing long range flights using OpenIPC. I think 80km was the last one I remember seeing.
I would also really like to see some h264 latency and quality comparison. To my understanding h265 has much higher processing demand and hardware decoding isn’t as widely supported on older hardware.
Hey Albert, about the latency, just some anecdotal evidence here to support what you're talking about... I started in FPV using my smartphone as screen, with the Eachine USB video receiver (I forgot the name) and a VR Box... And it worked great at the time, I had a Galaxy Note 4, that was top of the line at the time... Then, when I had to replace it with a cheaper model... It became unusable. The latency went sky high! So, even the phone you have can affect your experience, unfortunately. 😕
Looks like should be the Radxa Zero 3W/3E is what you want for the receiver / VRX unit, and that gets the latency down to under 50ms... Don't think the raspberry pi has onboard h265 decoder which is why the Radxa is preferred if you want to bring the latency down. This might be interesting to play with on some surface gear... Thanks for the video, looking forward to seeing how this evolves.
Yeah, that's the basic premise of this video. Better hardware = better latency. While this combo has the receiver module, the more important and more expensive part is the decoding hardware which will play a big part in the user experience. Perhaps I did not do a good enough job explaining this?
@@AlbertKimTV That will probably be more evident in the followup video, when you have the hardware to do the comparison. And necessarily need more expensive hardware, just hardware with the right capabilities. I.e. AI/LLM focused hardware isn't gonna help here when we need hardware GPU stuff. ;)

This is looking really promising and hopefully it'll lead to something big in the future, but why all the dunking on HDZero? I never understand why even in such a niche hobby as ours, many people like to put themselves into camps. I currently fly DJI, HDZero, and analog and I think they're all great and mighty fun. After flying some packs on DJI last night I was thinking to myself just how lucky we are that we have all of these innovative options in FPV to make our hobby such a blast. I say stay positive, fly what you like, and ignore all that negative noise, there is too much of it outside our hobby as it is. Thanks for the awesome video Albert, love your content ❤

@@AlbertKimTV on bench tests ive seen some people say they've reached 20ms but honestly 30ms is the realistic top end you should be able to get at best with current best decoders (radxa 3W zero) but that also has some downsides since you would be missing some features to get to the 30ms latency . I hope you havent gotton too many people angrily messaging that you misquoted the latency , some people in the openIPC community can be very protective of the project (to put it nicely) . prehaps the OP misrememberd that some people attached the DIY VRx module to HDZERO goggles (since they have a high refresh rate , so you can get better latency/ latency consistency). for best performance i would suggest a high refresh rate goggles paired with a DIY radxa 3W VRx , maybe if you ever get the time you can try it out though i will admit the instructions for the DIY VRx module build can be lacking
A latency test would be nice. Maybe just a quick, point the camera at a stopwatch app and show both screens in the video. That way we can pause and figure out the latency.
Is there a way to run Python code inside this platform for object detection and tracking using OpenCV/Yolo/TinyML? Is this too much to ask for now or should I wait until more powerful hardware gets introduced?
You can split the boards and ditch the fan. Although I'm not sure how well it would handle the heat without it. Like most quads it'll probably be fine in flight with the right setup.
just FYI there seems to be some latency issues on the runcam that are not present on the DIY boards or on the OPenIPC ones, this is being investigated. hopefully is just configuration, and not a hardware issue.
@@AlbertKimTV Standalone VR headsets. With Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (Qust 2 and Pico 4) and Gen 2 in Quest 3. They do h264 and h265 decoding on daily basis for PC connection. Usuall decoding latency 11 ms. Perfect fpv googles. Moreover, with proper software they won't need that usb wifi dongle, they already have wifi 6 inbuilt.
HEADS UP! Nice review Albert. Biggest hiccup Ive seen watching various DIY builds on the open source side is that people should really use a RX control link NOT in the 2.4ghz spectrum. So CRSF and 900mhz ELRS work with no issues. However much like with the start of HDZero and other 5.8ghz video systems having your RX control link on 2.4ghz can cause interference with both control and video link.

latency is already under 50ms, just on runcam seems to have some issues. hopefully is just bad config from factory

Videos I've seen suggest it similar to the setup shown here, using USB OTG cable from VRX to phone currently. But details are short at the moment
Their receiver is the same one as you saw in this video. USB Wifi Adapter. It's just packaged a little nicer.

Yes, I'll try but I expect latency to be lower with faster hardware since the decoding is very processor intensive.

The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra has a 14.6 inch oled screen and Snapdragon 8 gen 1, but it’s pretty expensive.

Quest 2, Quest 3, Pico 4. All these and some others should work. The app runs on Pico 4.

HEADS UP! Nice review Albert. Biggest hiccup Ive seen watching various DIY builds on the open source side is that people should really use a RX control link NOT in the 2.4ghz spectrum. So CRSF and 900mhz ELRS work with no issues. However much like with the start of HDZero and other 5.8ghz video systems having your RX control link on 2.4ghz can cause interference with both control and video link.
Wow, so DJI and Walksnail on 5.8ghz can cause interference with ELRS on 2.4ghz? That's news to me... Why have I not heard of this before?

Only 2 standoffs is a big mistake! The reverse wired cable is a problem too. Thanks for reviewing this new tech! Please enter me for the scrubber.
Think MarioFPV also had the wrong cable provided and said it should be fixed in later versions.
