    Nice to see a major director appreciating War of the Gargantuas. I love this film so much. I'm surprised Toho never made a new one to go along side their newer Godzilla films and even Daiei Studios new Gamera films.

    • @RocStarr913
      @RocStarr913 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably because they felt they didn’t have the same level of recognition. Far fewer movies were made by Toho themselves in the 1990’s and War Of The Gargantuas benefited from American funding in the first place.

      I think unlike the new Godzilla films ( that have been ruined ) That war of the gargantuas would be hard to mess up

      @@sourmilk7862perhaps for us old school folks we think the new Godzilla movies have been ruined but at least they have been mainstreamed into American culture.
      The issue with Sanda vs Gaira is just that. The story line and plot between the original Japanese version vs the Henry Saperstein American version are much different.
      The Japan version works off of Frankenstein vs Baragon or even the US Frankenstein Conquers The World.
      If any remake or continuation were to be made it has to be made off of the American version and hopefully Toho and some American producer can collaborate to make a spectacular version.
      Picks up after both supposedly perished from the volcano.

    Glad Burton said that about dubbed films. I liked dubbed movies because you are actually watching the movie, and not merely reading words that make you miss everything on the screen. I do however like to also watch an original version with subtitles only *after* seeing the dubbed version, to see any differences, additional scenes, etc. Being a major Godzilla/Japanese Kaiju fan, having different versions available is fantastic, unlike when I was a kid. And yes, War of the Gargantuas is beyond awesome.

      You nailed it. Besides what you mentioned, dubbing was part of the charm, especially in the Showa era. The movies were so goofy and over the top, that the cartoonish voices made it more surreal. Two forms of campiness that blended together like bread and butter.

    Eliminating the rubber monster suits really helped. The gargantuas could move and fight very fluidly. Remember that scene where one is running along an airport tarmac? It was scary because it was fast. And I loved Burton's line about the has-been actors: Russ Tamblyn, Nick Adams (Monster Zero), and Robert Dunham (Dogora). Those were my boys!

    • @f430ferrari5
      @f430ferrari5 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wouldn’t say they were has been actors.
      It’s amazing to me that Russ was so difficult to work with. To me there were some scenes where the arrogance is there but it passes off as just acting.
      Nick Adams was good too.
      These movies were great to bring back relations between Japan and the US and to both sides of the public.
      Who would have ever thought that just 20 years prior WW2 just ended.

    Burton had a great run of films in the 80s' and 90s' and then I don't know what happened. The only two post 2000 films that I liked by him were Big Fish and Sweeney Todd. With that being said, I'm glad that he is a kaiju film fan.

      Yep. I think Adams was happy to work in Japan and he didn't sleepwalk thorugh his appearances in those films like Tamblyn. Also, Tamblyn seemed to look down on his castmates and you didn't see that with Adams.

    • @cuse445
      @cuse445 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Burton seems to be referring to Nick Adams, who died of a drug overdose two years later, but I had heard that the Japanese actually liked him and he got along with Kumi and her co-stars very well, Nick did a three picture deal, Monster Zero 64', Frankenstein Conquers the World 65', then seemed to go home and fade away. Yes Tamblyn was an asshole! It should of been Adams in this movie.

    The Gargantuas' battle topped most other Toho monster fights because they were more realistic in motion and speed, not lumbering around like the others. The only other one that comes close is Kong vs Godzilla.

    • @noblegas7073
      @noblegas7073 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was something I immediately noticed in Frankenstein vs Baragon as well.
      The decision to use the actors real eyes in addition to the suits being humanoid in design gave the actors great agency over their kaiju as characters.
      Also, Mr. Burton points out that the climactic battle is a “struggle between two Gargantuas”. He makes a good observation here. There’s a purpose between their conflict and a certain sadness since it’s unwanted, yet unavoidable. It adds another layer to the film.
      This was also some great effects work by Tsuburaya.
      One of the best Showa era films to be sure.

  • @zakzilla420
    @zakzilla420 13 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm sorry Tim, I must disagree on your statement that the acting was terrible in the Japanese monster movies, it is your preference of dubbing over subtitling that doesn't let the actors true abilities shine though. Kumi Mizuno, in particular, is fantastic in War of The Gargantuas and Ishiro Honda is a fantastic director that deserves SO much more recognition than he gets.
