    Thank you for doing this. It's starting to become obvious (with your input along with whistle blowers like Thorney Motorsport) that ridiculous maintenance really is (for the most part) dealership inflation vs. a poorly designed car. It's good to know with a little wrench time and resourcefulness you don't have to stay awake at night wondering how many kidneys you'll need to part with to enjoy one of these.

    Yup, that's a subscription. Thank you for being, I think, maybe the only TH-camr to actually own one of these out of warranty and not be afraid to work on it (outside of rebuilding a wreck). I'll be curious to see how it pans out as you continue to accrue miles as I'm a fan of the car and would love to own one if it seems user-service-feasible. For a cost-comparison, I recently did a piece where I show ~$3700/year owning an '04 Gallardo for a year, and about a $3700/year average for 11 years with a '92 NSX (that figure exacerbated by track use and 238,000 miles). So, you are definitely winning with your experience so far! (and cheers from a fellow VinWiki alumni!)

      I rented a 12C for a few days in Vegas from Royalty Exotics and absolutely loved it! It is so light weight and fast! Smooth lines. A classic beauty. Love the interior. What a blast it was. For comparison I’ve rented the i8, also a great car but not nearly as fast, an R8, not as nice as the i8, a Viper, yes it wants to kill you and terrible A/C. And for shorter periods I’ve done group excursions that included Ferrari F430, 911 Turbo, Gallardo, Murcielago, Ford GT, Continental GT, Z06 and on the track I’ve done laps in the 458, the Huracan, Aventador and others. On the track the 458 was the best then the 12C. But the 12C is more exotic and preferred in the city and highway. The lambos have the best sound but too heavy for the track.

I felt they were the most reliable best way to go though still had concerns about if things did go wrong.. Your videos taught me alot and made me feel comfortable moving forward buying one! I will definitely be buying stuff from you! Do you have any recommendation of what to look for when shopping for one? What should I make sure was replaced, changed, or updated before buying? I know there was afew recalls..

    • @McMedics
      @McMedics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      HVAC controls are quite often dead or going dead, very apparent and I sell a $800 fix for it. The underbody strakes are often broken, I sell those as well. If you see a replaced transmission in the service history don't fret. Until the near future, any transmission related issue was resolved with a replaced transmission. That includes fluid leaks, shifting funny, even a general hydraulic issue (because the suspension, active aero, and other functions work with the transmission). They're just now nearing actually servicing items instead of replacing the transmission. Look for leaks around the suspension, it would indicate an accumulator going bad (above the spring). If there is an adjustable volume for Intake Sound Generator in the instrument cluster it has the power upgrade (it was free, very common to have it). I'd avoid very low mile cars, definitely not less than 1k miles per year but I like to stay around 2k miles a year or more.

    • @McMedics

      McMedics come to you for less than the dealer as well. If your friends are blowing engines they're doing it wrong, like crap tunes, not letting them warm up before bouncing off the rev limiter, or not checking oil level. Transmissions don't go bad either, dealers replace them unnecessarily because of corporate procedures and stupidity

      It's #362. 3rd party warranties are much less than the McLaren extended warranty, but you've also gotta be aware of what they will and will not cover. I've heard stories of not covering significant items or pay out caps. I've also heard of things like $2,000 deductibles, which in my case means I'd be paying out $3,000 a year to still not use it after paying all I've paid.

    An exotic car is still a car. You might get hosed on parts costs, but if you can learn how to do the work you can save on exorbitant labor, supplies, and part markups at the dealer. They just know that a McLaren owner is more likely to spend 3000 on a procedure that would cost 500 on a Toyota.

    • @McMedics
      @McMedics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And that Toyota won't give you the same enjoyment either. It's the price to pay for entertainment. Though all things considered, your point could be made for a luxury brand as well. Mercedes repair could cost the same as McLaren.

So finding you Mite Be My God Send🥳. thanks for video I'll Ck-out Ur Other Videos But I could definitely get McLaren if no Trans & Rack problem Because THATS The Big Problem From What Iv Heard & Seen, at $30-35k Each Of Thos which Iv heard is almost common on early MC12, scares me, But you are smartest guy Ive seen doing this especially w/ur cheap fixes, definitely has made difference in my thinking, thanks again🎸🎸🎸

    • @McMedics
      @McMedics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard a lot of "horror stories" too, from people that have never owned them or had them right out of the gate. 2012's specifically have unique door entry to every other year or model, 650's have a few little things on the engine updated like cam phasers. The key to getting a good car is getting one that DOESN'T have low miles. At least 2,000 miles per year will be the best car, that applies to any brand. I wouldn't get a Ferrari, Lamborghini makes some pretty good stuff but those aren't flawless either. There have been VERY few actual transmission problems with these cars, it's literally the same transmission all the way through 600LT's and the 4.0L cars are extremely similar. I have an early 2012, #362, and I'm friends with the owner of #258 and his car has also been extremely good.

      The rotors are quite expensive to replace, but they rarely need replacing. Funny enough, they're the same as C7 Corvette carbon ceramics I think it is. So, cheaper when you apply it to a different application and interchangeable. The pads you do have to replace eventually (I haven't had to yet) there are some aftermarket options that are better than stock and IIRC they're about $1,200 a set. So realistically they aren't that bad.

    Was the transmission issues that Hoovie was having the norm?

    • @McMedics
      @McMedics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, that is in fact a very few and far between issue. I think in Hoovie's case the issues were more owner related than car related. The entire time he had it there were no issues, with anything. There have been more Ferrari 355's on fire than McLaren transmission failures. For perspective, the 3.8L engine and transmission found in the MP4-12C is the same one that is in the 650s, 675LT, 570s, 570GT, 540GT, P1 (engine only), 600LT, MSO X, and 620R.

    Yeah, I'm not impressed with McCatbox's... I feel like I'm driving a Chrysler product. The cheapest quality for a stupid amount of money, like old Lamborghini's. I very much respect your grind and know what you go threw. Im Super anal, very cheap, replace aftermarket, rarely drive it, and use it to impress my friends and bragging rights.... I'm not a big Ferrari guy but they are built much better. RR Ghost coup is worth every penny and thee highest quality imo.

      I'm actually an engineer for the company that owns the very platform we're on :) and work at the Austin office. Only a couple years removed from University now, but as a car enthusiast, I've been looking at a few different options to buy. I was a bit drawn back by some comments about reliability issues, but I'm glad you went into some detail about your own experience/maintenance/fixes. This definitely provides a new perspective for me on the 12c and McLaren, in general! I'm a very hands-on person, so doing service work for the vehicle, whichever I choose, on my own is going to be a blast.
      I've been curious about buying: Lotus Evora 400/GT, Porsche 991.2 CS, Giulia Quadrifoglio (sure it's not the same class, but... driver's car), McLaren MP4-12c. I haven't driven a single one yet, but am still gathering information on all of them to make the best decision and will hopefully be doing so very soon!

      I haven't had any transmission problems. It's a myth about the failures. There are very few actual failures. Until recently McLaren warranty replaced transmissions for anything connected to the transmission too. If there was an air brake fluid leak they'd replace the transmission because the systems are connected.

      @@McMedics It's American. Look up "lemon law." It varies state by state, but generally it refers to cars that are consistently problematic beyond the industry standard. Basically a piece of shit that keeps breaking.

    • @McMedics
      @McMedics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am American, and I know what the lemon law is and how it works. I'm not sure you do which is why I asked what made it a lemon. The lemon law applies to a $500 car or a $5 mil car if it was made anywhere in the world. I'd the law kept pieces of shit off the road, 1/3 of the cars in SC wouldn't be on the road. Inspections keep pieces of shit off the road. Lemon law keeps a consumer from dumping money from the same issue (or warranty claim for the same issue) into a car where the issue isn't getting resolved when sold.by a dealer. Most states you have to have it taken in to be repaired 3 times in less than a year for the exact same issue.
