My experience is about the same with my 570S. I do my own work. I have an MDS. It's been basic maintenance. Lots of driving, trips, track days and smiles. Thanks for all your videos. They have helped point the way more than once.
Regarding yellowing of the clearcoat on the cfk: Your paint shop can blend a little bit of light blue transparent pigment to the clear coat before respraying. The blue hue will offset the yellowing a bit better. Not like "you will never see it again" but pretty decent.
WOW. didn’t realize you were so close. I’m in Raleigh NC. you give me hope these cars can be operated within a reasonable 2-4K a year. I’m looking at the 570S and was going to discount it because of lack of local knowledge.
@@McMedics my friend in the US is about to pay 82k for one with 20k miles on the clock. A cursory look on UK sales sites I can see 2 for 82k dollars (65k pounds) all of these examples are in great shape, so I dunno about price increases. I figure it'll be 20 years plus to realise any kind of substantial profit on one of these.
You can't compare auction to retail and any car he's paying that much for is going to come with a $20k bill to get it right. I do PPI's on these, there is a reason it's cheap.
Awesome video. I have a 570GT and it has been out of warranty 2 years and has been reliable and cheap to run. Less than 3K the last two years including two tires, 15K service and oil changes. And I had the work done for me at Exotic Specialty Services in Huntington Beach, CA.
Hi Shaun/Shaun/Sean? I am terribly sorry, but I have no clue how to spell your name correctly. I just wanted to say thank you to your 12C ownership diaries. Just returned home from a test drive with 12C number 135 which is currently for sale. And, very much also because your content here has encouraged me and given me confidence that I am doing the right thing, I am going to buy the car. The process will probably require a couple of weeks before it is all complete, but I can see myself driving #135 later this summer. Thank you very much for your brilliant work!
@@McMedics Thank you very much for offering. The car is located in Switzerland though, which makes it a bit of a challenge for me to have you do the PPI. I have seen the full documentation of the car, that goes as far back as to the order that was put in, even before the price was published. The Ron Dennis letter is there also. The current owner is owner number 3 and he has had the car for five years or 34000 kms. All the critical topics have been addressed in the past, like fuel rail rework campaign, oil cooler return pipe campaign, rear lights, gearbox, a/c lcd's, accumulators, some new wishbones, wiper motor, cam phaser, delamination of the rear glass, upgrade to IRIS2, upgrade to the most recent ECU software, and recently the cam covers were replaced and the alternator plus coils and plugs. I do trust that this is a car that was looked after meticulously well. After the handover, I will probably pay a visit to Donau Auto near Munich, one of the independent specialists in the Thorney Motorsport network. I am sorry that I cannot afford to fly you in for a PPI though 😕
Always appreciate these updates. If something were to push me over the hump to actually own a 12C at some point it would probably factor in proximity to McMedics, lol.
Not bad. My Tesla has 100k miles in 5 years. I just bought my 2nd set of tires so total $2,000 for tires and $5,000 for insurance. Free supercharging so all in was $7,000 for 5 years plus a gallon of washer fluid. Surpised a MP4-12C is not that much more to own. I wish i can work on the car myself and save $ like you. How much do you think it woukd be if you came to L.A. once a year and worked on a MP4-12C at my house (no lift).
@@McMedics that is very reasonable. I thought owners may have to cover your travel and hotel. I watched all your videos and I don't even have a McLearn. My dream car though.
5k per year isn’t too bad given this car is about 300k (new). You could’ve driven a Toyota a Corolla and spent a little less but missed out on the fun, thrill of driving and all the friendships😂. That’s awesome, Sean. See you in a few weeks.
Thanks for posting these videos and giving many of us hope lol. I've seen you post on the McLaren forum as well. In your experience, is it possible to get parts from McLaren to do an engine rebuild or are there aftermarket parts available? I had a V8 Vantage years ago which spun a rod bearing so I like to know the worst case scenario beforehand. In the case of 570s which I'm looking at, it comes down to a full engine rebuild and transmission rebuild cost. I know some DCTs can be rebuilt at specialized shops (I believe 458 and SLS DCTs for example) but have no idea about McLaren units. Thanks!
@@McMedics Any rough idea of the labor costs involved? I see taking the engine out of the 12C is quite laborious. I thought it was annoying to have it done in my former 355 for the timing belts but at least there the car was designed for a relatively quick drop.
Good video, exactly what I was looking for.. About to buy a 720s or 650s.. Can’t decide to be honest… There is just something about the 650s that looks amazing… Still, the option is there.. Can I ask, what do you really like about both? Having the choice of only one, what you buy knowing what you know now? Cheers.
I bought a 720 and still have the 12C. They're both special in their own ways but not the same price point by far. What you're after, how you'll use it, and what you can spend dictates direction.
The only people who want low miles are first time buyers that think low is good, and people who will never drive them. Low mile cars are problematic and cost more to buy and more to own.
