Spain are no more possession merchants . They can hit you on counter , corners , build up play, individual stars. They are lethal.
My only worry is this spain against a low block. Idk how many teams will play a low block in Euros but I personally think that spain will struggle against them.

I had a feeling with De la Fuente, who is a less philosophical manager than many others in Spain....a bit more pragmatic, the team would have the potential to improve.
I think the combination between possession and direct play is a must. Too much possession doesn’t do anything for you besides passing backwards and playing too direct means you lose the ball too often.

Spain always played vertical tiki taka, but sometimes they play againts 11 players inside their box...and thats why some people say is not vertical just moving the ball around...

Croatia played a lot better than the actual scoreline, the thing though is that Spain are a much better team than them on paper and you expected them to win comfortably. Given how tough this group is it was an important win and yes Croatia are getting older, this is a team who has been good in the past couple of tournaments particularly at World Cups and beating them 3-0 you took care of business when you needed to even though in that game you weren’t the better team. They already won the game in the first half and they set down a marker in the opening game. You get the job done and that’s what you’re supposed to do when you’re seen as one of the contenders to win these major tournaments and them beating Italy in their next game means that their core players can rest once they’ve secured automatic qualification for the knockouts.
It seems like every top country (France England Germany Portugal Spain Netherlands Italy Belgium etc) all have this confidence that they can go on and win the EUROs because all of the big powerhouses (Spain Germany and Italy so far), have hit the ground running and have started their respective games very well. Spain in general are being slept on for the EUROs and while their team isn’t as star studded as the ones that they had in the early 2010s, it’s still a good team that’s relatively young and has some experience and quality in it as well. They finally have 2 direct wingers in Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams and having them on one side both of them constantly go at their fullback for 90 minutes straight, Alvaro Morata has a very good record with the national team, Pedri and Rodri are their most significant midfielders even Fabian Ruiz got a goal and an assist today and Dani Carvajal is playing some of the best football of his career. Spain are cooking up something special at the EUROs and can have a deep run in this competition and possibly win it all if Morata is scoring goals, you utilize the combination of skill and speed in your wingers Yamal and Nico, you need Pedri to stay healthy because he’s a phenomenal player and his partnership alongside him Rodri to pull the strings in midfield.

How's this for a stat, Alvaro Morata, with seven goals, is tied with Antoine Griezmann for the 3rd highest goal scorer in Euro history. With two more goals, he'd tie Michel Platini for second place. Cristiano Ronaldo is number one, far ahead of everyone with 14 goals.
Remember CR7 has played since 2004 euros while both Griezman and Moratas first euros was 2016, so he is only ahead due to playing 3 more competitions than them.

Possession can be very deceptive. It is a game, not a SCIENCE. Croatia looked lethargic.
A lot of talk about Modric... look back at how Madrid is using him - sparingly and strategically. He can still be devastatingly effective - but in smaller doses now. If he is expected to play the full game at maximum effort then it is not going to work. Difficult to manage so I can understand if Croatia is finding it hard to begin the process of transition.

Boring posession-based team?. Well, that happens when you face teams like Rusia in 2018 WC and Morocco in 2022 WC, who parked the bus the whole game. Cetainly, the tiki-taka can be very entertaining and effective when you played against an Italy adopting a new style in the 2012 Eurocup final.

Honestly this I think was a statement game from Spain. Most people before the Euro started would have England or France (maybe Germany) to win, but Spain is also showing up. And if Croatia wins, they talk only about why the other team "lost". And it's been like this since 2018. i have never seen a more biased channel, ever. They really should expand their analysis to more teams because this is ridiculous and disrespectful to the smaller teams.
So was Luis Enrique holding em back with his possession tactics.
They got to semifinals last Euro and lost on penalties against Italy (they could have won if they have scored their chances). We are yet to see if they make it to the semifinals this time. That's just an opportunistic conclusion based on the result, with a Spain team more clinical than usual and a Croatia team that wasted more opportunities than usual.
This Croatia will still comfortably beat Italy. So, Spain and Croatia still going to the next round.

Very poor decisions
My only complaint is that the coach chose Pedri over Brahim. Brahim contributes much more, especially in goals than Pedri. This Spain needs more shooters, Yamal contributes in assists and not so much in goals, it is the same for Carvajal although he scores more goals than Yamal, Pedri or Rodri do not contribute goals either. It is as if Spain only had Morota and Fabian to score goals, we have plenty of players who can assist but very few who can score a goal from a distance or sneak into the rival area to score. We lack in scoring options and Brahim could have been the solution to that problem.
You don't know more about football than a professional coach, you just want the Barcelona players out.
