Ian Wright is such a brilliant analyst. I have been saying the same thing on Trent since the beginning of the tournament. What's the essence of having trent in midfield when there's no movement to exploit his passing strengths!
Bro Trent CANNOT play centre midfield , this isn’t ultimate team on fifa where you can put any player in any position. Playing RB and playing CM are two way too different positions. He’s became world class playing RB cause he has the whole picture in front of him and his range of passing is elite. He can’t play CM cause he doesn’t scan, he’s not aware enough which is why he got caught in possession in both games.
@longlive_lando1361 defending and attacking when the whole right hand side of your body is out of bounds is so much easier than the center of the park.
He's got no place being in CM for me ...Didn't make a single tackle in CM! He's a quality player who's not the greatest defender, play him at RB protect him and have some movement up front.

In Trents defence, hes used to playing with 3 lively forwards who are quick, and constantly on the move giving him options to break the defence. Now he has Harry Kane who doesnt sprint anywhere and spends half the game dropping back into midfield. There's no options whatsoever.
One simple question to Southgate that's never asked must be: "In the 7 years in charge of this England team have you ever practised set patterns to move the ball from defence into midfield and then into attack? Cos I haven't seen any fucking evidence of it whatsoever!"

Problem is bigger than Southgate I’m afraid. Just before he got the job, the FA went and hand-picked Sam Allardyce with his brand of football for the national team. If these are the people in charge, England are beyond hopeless.
The issue is not playing Trent or Foden out of position but the structure of the team, which determines how they keep possession, press, recover, attack & defend. When you’re not compact players get isolated and they easily lose possession. They need to play as a unit.
Change of players is not the first step but a change of structure/shape of the team in their mode of operation. They must press together, keep possession together, attack together and defend together. When you establish this mentality you can pick any player from the group.

I've seen all the formations, all the players, all the managers and when it comes to it, we play like the same 11 players every time. Nervous, a bit panicky, rushing simple things, bottling ambitious things, endlessly frustrating and ultimately disappointing.

No Real no8 that can control the midfield. Left Full back with the right foot just to let again the most expensive player play. The same with the previous golden Generation.
England has team full of Premier league players, but is managed by a League One manager. Atleast it shows people the importance getting a good manager.
England have had world class players for 30 years, and world-class managers, and this still keeps happening. At a certain point, the players need to step up.
England's problem are way deeper than that coz its hierarchy (the FA) is amateurish at best. Their main concern is how much revenue they can generate or how politically correct they are....
Here after watching Spain v. Italy and the difference in the style, tempo, and tactics in that match was LEAGUES AHEAD of England's performances so far.
Yeah as an azzurri fan that spain game was hard to watch but at least we defended well and had our moments in the last 15 minutes. Has england ever had a world class manager?
Watching any of the big teams play worries me, if we come up against Germany, France, Spain or even Portugal we are going to get completely embarrassed
this is the best bit of analysis Neville has done in a long time. Solution to not having ballers in midfield that can dictate the game... play fast wingers, play in behind, play in the opposing half, win the ball high. and shift TAA to right back and drop Walker. If Shaw isn't fit, play Sakha at left wing back. Play like Liverpool did in 2019 with Hendo, Ginnie and Fabinho in midfield. We can replicate that with Rice, Mainoo, Bellinghham. Its so obvious.
Yeah he needs runners in the centre and on the left. Kane never breaks out of a light jog and Foden is not a winger. If he plays Trent, he needs to play Gordon and Watkins/Toney, otherwise he is useless. Mainoo would be much better in there.
Some good comments here. Also why isn't Watkins considered to come on for the left channel (narrower and closer to the cf more than wing). Tempo needs urgency and 1 touch passing at times and the passers need to be told to play in those spinning n running because they are often ignored so play them in unless they become a decoy as u have spotted an even better option. .. also to the runners complete your runs and pull the defenders around the pitch! FFS!
This whole issue with Trent, is i believe logically due to Trent playing most of his professional career, as a fullback, this whole midfielder thing is new to him. Hence why he is not a natural fit for this position, and unfortuneately this shows on the pitch, imho Jack Grealish is a more natural fit and they are playing primarily as a LM or LW now.....but it's not just a Trent thing, England's biggest fear every tournament is not playing too high for fear of the ball played in behind them, therefore the defensive line will drop back, contrast this with Pep Guardiola, who want's his teams to press to force the other team to play the ball long, occasionaly a perfect pass will bypass their entire team and they concede, however they will create much much more than most of their opposition, this has always been my nation Spain's phillosophy for decades and guesss what we have consistently conceded these kind's of goals the key is not to fear this which will happen every so often. , but England's "Answer" to this, is prevention, which basicallay amounts to the back line dropping deeper, and obviously you cannot have it both ways.. well that's my opinion as a LFC fan btw
Bro it's like watching the Springboks play rugby under HEINEKEN Meyer, painfull to watch, Southgate is now being exposed , has been since he started , but now at its worst, so many good players looking average..those players perform at their clubs
He's been ridiculed for that statement but it actually makes sense and ties in with what Neville says in this clip. All great midfields need a passer - a player who can take the ball on the half turn in tight positions and recycle it. Rice is more box to box and Bellingham is being used as a playmaker, so the third man in there has to be able to pass. Kalvin Phillips when he was as his peak under Bielsa did that job for England. TAA isn't doing it in there - he's learning on the job. If we can't recycle the ball in midfield we can't control the tempo of the match and we can't build up through the lines.
Neville’s take on rice is so wrong. Rice’s progressive abilities were never an issue for Arsenal but apparently they are at England? Then the issue is clearly the team and not the player. Nobody asks Kante to supply passes like Toni Kroos. France paired him with Pogba & Chelsea paired him with Jorginho. This tournament kroos has been paired with andrich, a true ball winner, and at Madrid he had Casemiro. But because Rice is taller, bigger and can play at the base of midfield all by himself, people feel he should have that responsibility, too. The curse of talent.
I remember what my late dad once told a young me when I was getting excited about England in the 98 world Cup, he said you'll never see england win anything in your lifetime I'm afraid son. 26 years later and he's still spot on.

2016 was especially smelly. So smelly it made me ambivalent towards the national team and i used to watch every game they played. Right now its definately not being helped by southgates poor decision making but the players shouldnt escape criticism. We still lack composure both individually and as a team. He's a failed Championship manager who nobody wanted after the Middlesbrough relegation. What are his credentials to then be selected as England Manager?
Im a danish fan, the danish wingbacks are often our best weapon going forward, so starting Foden made absolutely no sense. It basically means you allow one of the wingbacks to focus on attacking and get forward more. Maybe there was an idea behind it, i just couldnt see it
Southgate is probably sitting in his hotel room with a glass of water and a rich tea biscuit contemplating if he should wear a knitted cardigan or a waistcoat against Slovenia.
England could have Pep Guardiola, It still wouldn't work. Take away foreign players and foreign Coaches from the EPL, this is what you end up with when English players end up on the International Stage.
I wish a pundit had the bottle to call out Southgate, he has no clue how to change it, at 90 minutes he was directing space that no one was in. Southgate had to drop TAA and put Bellingham in midfield, to push Gordon on the left to spread the play and create space in the middle for the creative players
Linekar did on the BBC and his podcast with Micah Richards. And he called Harry Kane out like Ian Wright has. He said he was basically lazy in his movement. Rio too said as a defender, he wouldn’t care about Kane or what he was doing because he was just pottering around.
Neville is as clueless as Southgate he's obviously never heard of Alf Ramsay only 58 yr ago Terry Venables Bobby Robson Glen hoddle Southgate is the worst we've had
It was at a time where we had players unknown at international level and a slim roster of managers. Southgate did a fantastic job at bringing the team together with strong spirit and over performed (with some luck on the way). Fast forward to now and we have some of the best talent on offer, Southgate is tactically inept. I think it’s larger than Southgate and there being influenced by statistics.
Watching players tell each other to calm down, when the other team is emotionally needing to win more and therefore faster more on edge , tells you everything But they got away with it , even with Slovenia and Denmark winning its 4 points, they are through already
Most of the ex pros are mates with him or don't want to lose favour with the FA so they've been looking the other way since his appointment.....he's the definition of a one-dimensional man and that's not virtue when it comes to managing at the highest level.
I think because of the results he has got comparatively and the culture he's created. I think they honestly fear that if he's not there we might regresss further if we had a donkey like Sam Alladyce for example. Who's gonna replace him when he goes? Way better than neville, Wright comes with insight, neville comes with hot takes and waffle
You have pretty much explained the difference 😂

Change of players is not the first step but a change of structure/shape of the team in their mode of operation. They must press together, keep possession together, attack together and defend together. When you establish this mentality you can pick any player from the group.

Yeah probably at the fact there blaming trent for not winning a game when all them managers would have him as a world beater😂
Barolo probably. But yeah
except mourinho
This is like 2010 WC / 2016 Euros all over again
Like watching England under Sven
Tbh we had a pretty shitty team at the 2016 Euros but 2010 WC is a great comparison. Feels like this is now or never with this team, with the other major nations like Spain and Germany being back on the rise.
@@lovejoy131The last Euros was our best chance in half a century to win something and that chance won’t come back soon.
2016 was especially smelly. So smelly it made me ambivalent towards the national team and i used to watch every game they played. Right now its definately not being helped by southgates poor decision making but the players shouldnt escape criticism. We still lack composure both individually and as a team. England are the frank bruno of international football..on their day give anyone a test but ultimately fold when the pressure is on at the highest level
Exactly what I was thinking. It feels like limping through the group in 2010.. if I remember right our first game was Algeria? But yeah back then we was waiting for something to click in each game.. but it doesn't happen, this is only gona end one way unfortunately 😕
"we didn't press well enough" buddy you told em to park the bus, how the fuck where they gonna press?
It's everyone else but himself at fault according to Southgate
Didn't you watch the interviews after the game? Every England player that was asked if Southgate told them to park the bus after they they score, said no.
Didn’t press enough ,we didn’t press at all,but was probably because none of them seemed to be able to run
@@BobBobOnTH-camThe chavs and the racists will hear what they want. We need to shut them up and appoint Gazza and Joey Barton in tandem. The Reform voters choice.
same problem since when they screwed up Scholesy's position
Imagine pep with this squad
I was just thinking this. Would be better im sure!
@@senseofawemusic In fact they'd be better with almost any manager from the Prem or any other big series.
This squad lacks the technical level required to play like guardiola wants to play
Pep is a world class coach. Southgate was thrown out of Middlesbrough! Yes he could do A LOT better but he couldn’t change the fact that a lot of these players aren’t as good as they and a lot of pundits think they are
Imagine ANY competent Premier League level manger....😭
The fact that Southgate was named the England manager in the first place was a disgrace. He was an abysmal coach who did nothing to warrant that position. That squad of players can and should have won a World Cup and a Euros. End of story
Yeah he should’ve gone after the last tournament.
Nah we got to final . Top players can be jaded so it dont matter that we got kane and bellingham and foden and all that
Amen. A dog shit player and an even bigger dog shit manager. Facts
He was a mediocre player and a manager he got boro relegate how he landed the England job is a mystery
He's a failed Championship manager who nobody wanted after the Middlesbrough relegation. What are his credentials to then be selected as England Manager?
I really do hope that the players stand up and say we can’t continue like this. Something has to change.
Southgate needs to be sent to Rwanda one way ticket 🇷🇼 😂😂
palmer isn't even getting a single minute is crazy
Where will he play?
@@masterchief1520literally anywhere forward, he’s that good
We don't need a penalty merchant on the pitch.
@@Mikejames1080bell end
Southgate is genius 😀😀he can do anything
Im a danish fan, the danish wingbacks are often our best weapon going forward, so starting Foden made absolutely no sense. It basically means you allow one of the wingbacks to focus on attacking and get forward more. Maybe there was an idea behind it, i just couldnt see it
I saw that
Southgate is probably sitting in his hotel room with a glass of water and a rich tea biscuit contemplating if he should wear a knitted cardigan or a waistcoat against Slovenia.
Too specific lmfao
Can't forget the umbrella mate😂😂😂
Southgate is clueless.
He had great club management career clearly overcompetent
England could have Pep Guardiola, It still wouldn't work. Take away foreign players and foreign Coaches from the EPL, this is what you end up with when English players end up on the International Stage.
@@STOVEPiPE. if we had Pep, we would win something for sure. He is a serial winner mate.
So is everyone else since 1966 !
@@MatthewMcRowan28% win percentage with Middlesbrough 😂😂😂
Favourite of not i been watching England since the early 90s and one thing i learnt about England is one way or another we always f*ck up
I wish a pundit had the bottle to call out Southgate, he has no clue how to change it, at 90 minutes he was directing space that no one was in.
I think you should be England manager you obviously know a lot about the game...!!!

England or United? 😂
It was like watching England v Iceland in 2016. Just so dire. Devoid of all energy and excitement.
Thought the same myself. Players couldn't even string a pass together. They lost all composure and looked nervous
Southgate wears a helmet on a peloton
Neville said Yesterday that Southgate has been England's best manager over the last 70 years. Laughable.
Neville is as clueless as Southgate he's obviously never heard of Alf Ramsay only 58 yr ago Terry Venables Bobby Robson Glen hoddle Southgate is the worst we've had
I totally agree Southgate a yes man should have gone years ago, best manager in 70 years RUBBISH.
That's the problem when everyone only goes off stats and xg
Hoddle and Venables were much better and certainly Bobby Robson and Sven Goran Eriksen were a million times better
Easy to forget how shit we were before him. Remember 2010?
What did the FA see in Southgate that was so remarkable. Am I missing something ?
They saw the only person who would take the job after the shambles of 2016....
Ticked appropriate boxes..?
Signalled his Virtue..?
He loves the blm and rainbow flag tripe
It was at a time where we had players unknown at international level and a slim roster of managers. Southgate did a fantastic job at bringing the team together with strong spirit and over performed (with some luck on the way). Fast forward to now and we have some of the best talent on offer, Southgate is tactically inept. I think it’s larger than Southgate and there being influenced by statistics.
He's a yes man boot licker.
GIVE DENMARK SOME CREDIT! 🇩🇰 They played their absolut hearts out, lovely goal and lovely press high up the pitch ⚽️
Have to agree. They played more as a team & made England look ordinary, and really punished England’s mistakes.
@@johnferguson4869 made england look ordinary but only managed a draw agains an ordinary team. Cant have been that good
Watching players tell each other to calm down, when the other team is emotionally needing to win more and therefore faster more on edge , tells you everything
But they got away with it , even with Slovenia and Denmark winning its 4 points, they are through already
They could have easily closed the game if they didn't lack finishing but can clutch a banger goal 😂
If our team played with 10% of Denmark’s passion spirit and organisation it would be an improvement
G Neville says all! Best analysis 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I'm beginning to believe more and more that British broadcasters have been given a mandate not to openly criticise Southgate.
The athletic journalist on the overlap praised him, because he gives them more access than previous managers. 😂
Unfortunately Bobby Robson or Terry Vegetables are no longer around!
