    Thanks for the “ split the stem “ tip … can be used for many thick stemmed feathers!

    Thanks for the info on how to treat a blue jay feather. The colors on this montage sound superb. You surprise us with each new edit. It's absolutely beautiful. Thanks again, I'm learning with each edit.

    Fantastic Davie, my favourite top dropper on the laughs and I’ve struggled with stripping the jay feathers for years. I’ve recently started dyeing grey partridge blue and using that but I’ll be trying the hot water method tonight

    Good tip Davie. It will definitely cut down on bulk at the head of the fly. Thank you for sharing.

    Thanks Davey. If I had a pound for every one of these I have tied , I’d be a lot better off ! I did this because I found it the most consistent mayfly imitator on Corrib and Mask, when used on the top dropper and well greased up. For this purpose it needs to be a fairly large pattern, even up to a size 8. In the early years on Mask, back in the mid 90s, even using this formula, I found it would sink quite quickly. You have to be able to see it being pulled back through waves/ripple. I resolved this by using the lightest wire hook I could buy, if you use a heavy hook it doesn’t work as well. Also, you have to use the proper natural blue jay feather, imitations liked dyed guinea fowl don’t work. It must be the shade and markings of the blue jay that does it in the different lights. My best trout on Mask with this wonderful fly was 3lb 12oz ! Thanks for the jay feather splitting tip 👍

    A good looking fly. In US, the use, and even possession of migratory bird feathers is illegal. Can you suggest a substitute for the
    blue jay feathers? Thank you for sharing your tips, and excellent tying skills with us. Many thanks Davie.

      Hi MDgunship,
      I did a quick search on TH-cam for a video on how to fish these type of flies as I feel it's much easier to show rather than writing it down so I have attached a link to a video which gives you a good idea how these flies are fished..I like the bumble on the top dropper though in a good wave I've fished it on the point of the cast as it's a really good fly so it can fish anywhere on a cast..
      All the very best Davie

    Hi Davie I know this is an old video but I was wondering if you can tell me how long did you steap the blue jay feather's for and was it warm or boiling water. Thanks in advance

    Hi Davie, am right in saying, that only one side of a pair Jay wings can be used for winding? Thanks for the video.

    Will this method work with other thick stem feathers?

    • @tomjonas3391
      @tomjonas3391 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it will. You can add a bit of glycerin to the water, as well. The glycerin will really softens the stem well.
