It’s a testament to your strength that even tho you had “issues” when you first began making Barbie clothes, you persevered! And look where you are now- a mentor to soooo sew many!

I overheard my mom on the phone one day telling someone that I could sew a straighter seam than she could. I was only six. I feel so relaxed at the machine. I've sewed on so many crappy machines but now I have several good ones. It's always best to follow your passion. I wish you the best.

thank you so much Lauren for sharing your life story with us .... you are so genuine and sweet ... I am now 62 years old, I look 30 LOL ... I have also been sewing since a child, sewing, decorating and I have to share with you .... I wanted a canopy bed so badly that I nailed a bedspread to my ceiling and added stuffed snakes for the poles, you may not remember as you are so young, but when I went to the Exhibition in Toronto, I won some stuffed snakes on a game and added them by hanging them at each corner of the bed (also nailed to the ceiling) and they looked like poles of the bed ... I was only 13 but had so much fun putting huge holes in my ceiling .. I wish I learned to sew bags when I was younger but as I have just discovered your You Tube videos just recently, I have just started to learn how to put a hand bag together .... thank you for all your knowledge, always fun watching you share ! I have that same brain, but can you help me become more efficient? I need to know if you perhaps spend one day cutting, one day piecing, one day doing step one one several bags? OR do you cut something out, sit down and sew and finish it?
I can’t seem to focus but bounce!!!

@@lbolen12 I'm trying to prepare a few at a time one day and tackling sewing them on the weekends which is the only spare time I get. Unfortunately I don't get the chance to sew as much as I'd like.

I used to buy all of my fabric at Hancock. It was so cheap and the bolts of fabric were so many that it was like walking into Aladdin's cave. The employees were so nice, too. If you wanted to make something and didn't know how, you could ask and get advice. In the '70s I used to make school clothes for young girls and I charged $5 a dress for my labor (customers bought the fabric and patterns). I sure miss that store! I have loved sewing ever since. Thanks for sharing your sewing journey!

Me too! I loved Hancock Fabrics! $3.00 fabric and I would make a maxi dress on Saturday for church on Sunday! I would walk down those fabric isles and feel the fabric until I found what I had in my mind!

Lauren sweetie....you are an amazing young lady! Your talent knows no bounds. I ama young 70 yrs old. I have been sewing since I was 6 years old. I always knew that I wanted to sew. I started with my grandmother teaching me how to quilt than she taught me how to make clothes. I did thatt for quite some time till I graduated school and got married. I was 19. My amazing hubby bought me my first machine and I was on my way. I sewed everything took classes in college to perfect my craft and to teach. I got into bag making about 4 years ago. I love it!! I came upon your videos one night while needing help with the NCW and fell in love with you and your style. Keep doing what you do
because you make sewing fun and bring such joy to others.

This is amazing that that's all you did to become so popular.
Not saying it's not a lot of that you didn't work hard. I just mean, I watched a few of your sewing videos b4 finding this and kept thinking "wow, who is she. She must be known for something that people would buy handbags with a random person name on it that isn't a name like Louis Vuitton or something" lol....
Like I think of myself & think "no one knows me, I'm no one special, no one would want my name plated across their hand bags"..
I'm seriously blown away.. It actually made me feel even more a lone & depressed about my own life & situation..
That's just a while huge story. Long story short, I'm going through ALOT & just feel like I'm barely even existing and its so frustrating bc ive always loved crafting, always wanted to start my own business but feel like someone like me could never really make a good turn out. So to hear that just a regular every day person started out from making doll clothes..... Wow, that's just awesome for you & I love to hear people's success stories....

I love that you shared your story! I always wonder how you young women got started in your wonderful careers! I'm the one who loves the "clickity-clack" of your machine. I love watching your vids, and Siah's too. I just ordered some vinyl and will make a vinyl purse for the first time very soon and I'm looking forward to it. I started doing bags a couple yrs ago, but haven't done vinyl yet. Funny how it's such a passion for me at this age (70 next April). I still feel like a kid! Again, thanks for sharing your story!

I probably bothered my mom quite a bit as I would stand on her left and watch her sew. I had two brothers and two sisters at that time (another brother came much later) but Mom would sew our Easter and special occasion dresses for us sisters. She had taught school in a rural school until she got married. I took 6 years of home ec in jr high and high school. I made my maternity clothes and while outfits for my daughter. That was when you could sew clothes cheaper than buying them! Lol
A long time ago. You are twenty years younger than my daughter. I have always enjoyed sewing and I’m glad TH-cam recommended your video to me!

Lauren, I stopped my call center job (I am 73 and in a wheelchair) but I love sewing bags so instead of looking for another silky job I decided to take a chance on me and my bags. Any chance, you could do a couple videos on the business side with advice for someone like me? I’m sure you would help a lot of us. I plan to start with Etsy. Or maybe you could refer me to someone? Thank you in advance!! Thank you for all your videos!!! 💕🌷🤣

I learned to sew by making Barbie clothes with the scraps of fabric when my mom was sewing something for one of us kids. In jr. high school I took Home Ec and made a dress in 7th grade. Then in high school I took a semester of sewing. In that class I made a princess seamed dress, a corduroy pantsuit and a plaid skirt with a reversible vest that matched the skirt and contrasted on the other with a solid. In that class I learned the difference between homemade and Handmade. I had to make my oldest son's clothes after he was born because of his size. Everything ready made swallowed him.
Imade my daughter a medieval costume dress one year for Halloween. It was adult sized because she could wear it to work at her job.

Wow you are just as I was when I was 27.
There was no internet. So I began sewing at my church. Christian Women's Fellowship Now I see all the pillow adds.
As a service project In Grand Rapids Michigan, We were still the furniture Capitol of the world. What we had that companies would donate was foam rubber. Scraps of really odd shapes of foam rubber. We could make pillows for
New mothers in the inner city to use while they nursed their new borns. The older women of the church made cancer pads for hospitals in the area we were a downtown church. Anyway they said they would help a youngster of 27 make pillows
For new moms in the inner city. We ended up pulling the the foam into small pieces
Making a pillow from navy striped fabric. Then we stuffed the pillows . Friction from
The foam is wild. We shocked each other and there was foam sticking to everything. We wet it down with water that helped for a while . At the end we completed 35 pillows plus pillow covers and someone donated a beautiful baby crib . We donated the items thru Catholic Charities and even got to meet some of the mothers. It felt so good to share with
Other mothers that were nit as lucky as we were. Lauren you are on your way to a wonderful life. Much later I became a custom tailor by trade and had my own tailor shop with 12 employees. I retired 20
Years ago. But now I sew for clients making clothing. I am 74 and love what I do. Good luck to you.

Hi Lauren, I am so inspired by your story. I am a lot older than you but my sewing has kind of parallel yours. I have been a fine art artist all my life and in my high school days wanted to be a textile designer. But at the time most if not all manufacturers were on the east coast. I would not move. So went into graphic design long before computers. After family and "real" work as my husband called it I am back to my art. But I have always had a love of fabrics and sewing. I have wanted to design my own fabrics and when you mentioned Spoonflower I think I need to try it. I've had friends that have but not much success. But I think it was their designs. Thank you for your inspiration! I'm so glad I found you.

Thank you for this. Wondering if you've done a video or would do a video on how you decide your price point on the items that you make and sell also do you price things differently for online sales as opposed to craft shows

Love your art!! Have you turned any of it into fabric? Moonlight? They can't fire you for moonlighting unless there was a clause in your hire contract saying you couldn't, and let's face it unless you are working in some big time job I doubt they had you sign a contract. I should know in my twenties I was working 3 and 4 jobs at a time. Did that until I made myself very sick and had to go down to one.
