I have been sewing for 60 years. Every thing from wedding gowns, mens suits and ties, quilts, car seats and head liners, design and sew hand bags and so on. On sewing vinyl, the best way I have found, just a suggestion, I use a piece of clean tear stabilizer over the top of the vinyl. Just a strip over the stitch line and as wide as the pressure foot. You can pencil in the stitch line and zipper plaque, etc. I lightly spray the stabilizer with a temporary adhesive or tape it in place with painters tape being careful to keep the tape out of line with the stitching. Do the stitching and tear away the stabilizer. Takes a second or two more but is so worth it. I use painters tape for many type of sewing. Use it for guide lines on the sewing machine, tape pieces of fabric together if I don't want pin marks like on leather or vinyl. Just make sure to sew it soon after taping. I don't leave it on the materials to prevent the adhesive from bleeding onto the material. Just an idea. I'm old school. Thanks for sharing.

all of these tips are awesome!!! I copied and pasted so i could print for my “sewing tips binder” that i am now planning on making.
Have you considered writing a book?
It would be a great asset for us new sewists.

I started as a quilter (I am still a quilter) so the rulers you showed are the same exact rulers I have I started with 👍 I have been making bags now for a couple of years probably 4-5 years now , so glad I found you on TH-cam not to long ago and I have followed you since and I have learned new techniques as well , from watching you and other bag makers and tutorials on youtube 😊❤️

Thx Lauren for your advice and comments. I have sewn since I was about 8 years old and have made everything from Halloween costumes to wedding dresses and everything in between. I came across your site a few months ago and I am hooked. I love your outlook, your sense of style, and your confidence (without snobby comments to those of us that are just now learning your trade). You are a beautiful soul, inside and out. Keep doing what your doing your passions comes out in your art.

Some really great tips, Lauren! I have been sewing off and on for a few years. But I made my first bag (messenger bag) 2 weeks ago following a man online. I think it turned out pretty good. I have an old domestic machine (Husqvarna Optima 630) that I bought in 1990. I used Pellon 809 for the outer fabrics and I already had medium-weight interfacing that I used for the lining. I do get confused about the difference between Interfacing and Stabilisers. I looked up Decovil Light and am looking for alternatives for that. I am so glad I found your channel because although I found making bags was totally different than making couch cushions and frustrating, I also found it quite enjoyable. Ty for posting these tips!

Lubricate your thread spool with silicone spray and it will help lube the needle eye and reduce gumming up when using basting tapes .

I absolutely loved your explanation of the interfacing and stabilizer. I'm very new to bag making and absolutely love it, but I was unsure of all the pellon products. I know that ultimately Decovil is the most sought after however with the pandemic supplies seem to have become scares and the price point seems astronomical for a newbie. Now knowing I can use Sf101, cf809, and 71F. So far I've been using pellon 931td, and 987f fusable fleece. Useless I presume lol. So thank you so so much!!!

Thanks so much! Great video. I'm coming from Bookbinding and making just basic unlined bookbags (Both totes and drawstring backpacks) to making BAGS. Learning about the different interfacings and stabilizers has been a challenge. I wish I had found your video two months ago. Anyway, live and learn. I have a Domestic Brother CE8100. It came with a Teflon roller foot. I almost never have to pull out my walking foot.

thanks for posting this. I have made a few bags with my less treasured materials and I'm happy I did because they turned out good for a first attempt, but I know I can improve. I needed a little pep talk to make me realize I am not wasting time and materials, rather growing my skill set with each project.

great videos. today I got my Kraft 246B sewing machine, I've plan to start some bag making small home company. hope I can get it. first I had bought Juki DU1181N. that is why I start to watch your video. but later I canceld my buy and and ask the seller to bring me a Kraft 246B free arm sewing machine. I bought it online.
it is not the best between the free arm machines. but if you take care if it, it will work for you for years. I can use it like free arm and also just like normal (with table like Juki DU1181N) sewing machine.

I have pretty much all that equipment and a vintage singer that will sew through anything. But THE most helpful thing you said was to know you will make mistakes and give yourself time to learn. Couldn't afford Decovil lite so I got Decovil heavy. Bag wouldn't birth. My next attempt at a smaller bag went wrong for different reasons. Very discouraged. But I now U am ready to try, try again. Thanks.

Watching your sewing room tour, I see you have the Juki 2000qi. The online sewing machine suppliers call this a portable "industrial" type. In your opinion, can it handle doing your handbags. I live in small condo, so this would be an ideal arrangement.

Yea. I agree with her. I just started and the amount of mistakes you make as a newbie is crazy. You don't want to use up your expensive stuff when you are just learning only to have all that go to waste if its something you can't pull out or pull out without breaking it lol. I started using cheap materials until I was comfortable and then went into jeans, which is thicker and I'm learning how to use them.
