    5:11 The scale I decided to use was .0005
    The reason:
    Even though your modeling was proportional, when you use a unit scale of .001 every 1 unit = 2 units. So when you type in 16 units, it shows up as 32 units (you can see the length by going to Show Overlays > tick the Edge Length option)

      Me too, it seems sensless and time-wasting. If you came from Autodesk, Rhino etc: Start with 2D draw --> Extrude, Draw again -->Extrude. Round the corners, join everything et voilà. Blender has a very different workflow. Maybe this is more "rendering oriented" because meshes are extra clean and without exceeding vertex, lines and isolated points, but.. ok

    I work as a mechanical engineer. I like this a lot. In industry though, we try to whittle down a block with cutouts. It helps you imagine the limitations of tooling and whether or not they can actually reach what needs to be cut. Designs can be awesome, but sometimes they're out of bounds for the tool chuck to reach.

    Hi Yoji. For the methods you show us in 12:50-14.00, you can just select the corner edge and then do "dissolve edges". It is easier and faster that way.

    Merci bien for the tutorial, it was enlightening. I have been an architect for 25 years, and watching this convoluted way of drawing something so simple at least gives me a direction to go as I begin my Blender journey. I agree with some other comments that clearly Blender will not be replacing Fusion for this sort of thing for professional mechanical product designers. One needs the parametric modeling and tools for producing proper documentation. But for my hobby 3D printing projects, it can work.

    12:43 best/fastest way I know to do this is to hit 2 then select the line you want to remove then hit X then Dissolve edge. doing that will just dissolve the edge that you dont want and you dont have to fill any faces that way
    the second fastest way i can think of would be select eh 2 corner vertices then double tap G then so you can slide them along the edge till you get them to the other vertices then select everything then W then Merge vertices then Merge by distance

    Second option to make bevel (after minute 13) does not work anymore in Blender 2.81 with knife. I have trouble making line between two vertices - this line just disappear after second left click. If I use knife and make random line, not aligned with vertices, then it is okay - line stays and either space bar or enter make cut.

    At 7:16, during the first loop cut, I have to hit G -> X- > -32 to get the loop cut 16mm away from the far left edge. This is because the part is 96mm long so half is 48mm long and 48mm-32mm = 16mm from the left edge. In the video, the author hit G->X-> 16 and it works for him. It appears I am using absolute coordinates vs the author who is using relative coordinates. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

    • @larryp2206
      @larryp2206 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Figured it out. After you create the loop cut and drag it to the left, you must then left click which will 'set' the new edges. Only then can you G->X-> 16 and have it work in relative coordinates. The interesting thing is, if you wanted to use absolute coordinates, don't left click.

    +1 yojigraphics - This is a nice tutorial but clearly reveals how inefficient and time consuming that Blender is when creating precision/technical models as compared to parametric solids modeling CAD programs like Solidworks, Inventor, Autocad, etc.
    Blender is a wonderful incredibly powerful tool but gotta admit I'm disappointed that Blender creators have completely ignored all of us engineers and machine designers to date who appreciate efficiency, accuracy, and parametric full editability at any and all stages of completion, and even post completion model revisions. Oh well, at least we can import into Blender base geometry from our CAD models.

    • @leplubodeslapin
      @leplubodeslapin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are things called "Boolean Modifiers" in Blender that could have handled that much better with a non-destructive approach. You can basically add primitives and use them to extrude or remove shapes.
      This approach would have been much closer to Solidworks/Catia/Fusion 360/CAD Softwares. Maybe the author didn't know how to use these tools.
      But in any case I believe you're right, you'd still be a bit slower with Blender and you'd have to care about the amount of faces and to maintain your mesh clean / without artefact if you do it wrong.

    • @Jimbo-in-Thailand
      @Jimbo-in-Thailand 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@leplubodeslapin I guess the real problem is the inherent diametrically opposed differences between precise solids-based CAD modeling vs mesh-based artsy-fartsy sculpting - size/precision be damned - approach. Both methods have their own strengths and weaknesses. Gotta admit Blender 2.8 is definitely worth the effort to learn... but what a freakin' learning curve for old farts like me! 😁😄😲😭

    Any chance at changing these features at a later time? For example, that bevel which you turned into a curved feature. Could you make it slightly bigger? Like 1mm ? The other big one for me doing this stuff is that objects have to be related to one another. For example 2 cubes. One cube must be one quarter in size and placed at exactly 1/3 of the total length of the larger. Then at a later date we will want to slightly change the size(by a known value) and offset it by some quantity which is related to the size of other objects. In other words, all things typically are related and calculated from others. Having to hand calculate new ratio's every time will be insane. I see a vanishing point. Like once there are 10 different relationships, you will NOT want to hand DO all that every time. would be nuts.

Now I have no zoom option, it feels like shift is constantly pressed. Something is very wrong with Blender 2.81.

    I'm about to shoot my computer soon...
    Why does it look so easy when you draw your loops with Ctrl R ?
    When I try it your way (CTRL R , pulling new loop to the edge, G+axis+number ) my loops jump to some random places but not to the exact point I entered ...
    What am I doing wrong?

    At around 7:14 he very quickly explains how he's entering the numeric values to arrive at the ones reflected on the drawing but because he only verbally explains what he's doing (G-X-16) I'm having a very hard time duplicating the process; can anyone help? I do have my units set to mm and in the 3D viewport I am facing in the correct angle lastly I was able to create the base as he went through earlier, I'm also able to create the subdivisions with the ctrl R. I'm on a mac too BTW. I'd really like to get that detail because it's so important to the project. Thanks!

    I am a medical and aerospace engineer. I would love to learn blender specifically for modeling engineering parts such as this video. Do you have a course specific to engineering design with blender? have you heard of "mechanical blender"? i use sketchup pro and solidowrks,
    thanks

    hopefully in the future blender will be able to have all of the functionality of autodesk inventor and revit

    • @orsarino5395
      @orsarino5395 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      blender is totally different software compared to inventor, inventor uses circles etc.. blender has just vertices, remember you cant sculpt etc... in inventor

    • @psuemor1651
      @psuemor1651 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      revit is a whole other thing, but i know what you mean about inventor, this is still too complicated, it would be nice that it could work like sketchup for simple geometry, something like moving and object from a vertice into the middle of a line and rotate it with a reference (not known angle) i still have no idea how to do it in blender while in sketchup that was like the second thing i did when i first tried it out.

    Amazingly useful info on a rare topic! I'm a new subscriber now. May I suggest that in future tutorials you try to maintain an even volume as you describe what's going on? Many time your voice dropped down to where I had to raise the volume to 100%, only to be blasted when you returned to normal.

    Some reason the second bevel edge never works, the edges and vertices don't delete and then it just gets fucked up- anyone know why this is?

    Hi, I'm a new comer to blender and would prefer some CAD like precision atleast when it comes to modeling to exact dimensions. Anything new I should know about or addons as I install Blender 2.8 today?

    I'm doing 3d modeling as a hobbyist since a decade and i work in CAD/CAM since 3 years : to be brief, it's 2 different world and parametric modeling is way better for that, i could do that part in Fusion360 which is free in 5 minutes, while i keep everything editable with parametric history. Then export it in .stl or whatever for render in blender Cycles if i want. I mean i appreciate the effort and the tutorial but it's like "how to write a book in photoshop" : well, use Word or Libre Office.
    If you want to design hard surface only for visualisations, why not blender (and hardops or Fluent or boxcutter), but if you have a blueprint to follow, just use CAD software, make your sketch, constraint them, and here you go.

    At 7 mins in the video, it's loop-cut demo, I follow you steps almost, but I can not let loop cut at 16mm, my keys are Ctrl-R then GX+16, what steps i missed ?

    • @plumdog
      @plumdog 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      you have the right steps, did you left-click to position the loop on the far edge before typing GX16? (which should then grab the selected loop and move it 16mm on x axis). There shouldn't be any other steps needed if you saw the loop cut created when you hit Ctrl+R and then left clicked

    • @山姆來分享

      @@plumdog Thanks for your response, I got right steps yesterday, between Ctrl+R and GX16, it needs two left-click extra

    Great tutorial mate. I am still learning Blender and having used various 3D programs for some time, I have been wondering how to control, how far I want certain edge loops to go or how high to extrude at a certain height. Thanks as this helps alot, especially if I want specific sizes.

    HELP: whenever I click any option (sometimes after 2 clicks), and I move my mouse, I'm zooming in or out - how can I stop this? I mean I normally just want to zoom in or out with my clickwheel. When I'm moving something around, the last thing I want is to simultaneously zoom in or out. I have to hit escape all the time to stop the zooming
