    Johnny 5 is one of the most endearing robots in cinema. He's so emotive with his 'lashes', eyes, and body language. It really is a great feat of prop work to make him move so well, especially when interacting with objects and people.

    The voice of Johnny 5 was done by Johnny 5's operator, Tim Blaney. He read the lines for Johnny 5 to help the other actors in their role, with the intent of hiring a voice actor later to overdub Tim's voice. However, they liked Tim's portrayal and kept it.

    Fisher Stevens did such a good job playing an Indian guy that actual East Indians thought he was one.

    • @chrisbullard5901
      @chrisbullard5901 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

      As much as people give Fisher Stevens grief about the “stereotype”, he actually found a mentor and voice coach that taught him the right accent for the region of India, a lot of the right mannerisms, and he just did a good job.
      Did the script really need the engineer to be an Indian? Probably not, but a lot of the jokes put in Ben’s mouth are dependent upon a linguistic and cultural unfamiliarity with America for them to make sense.
      It also works as a great contrast, because you start to see where Johnny 5 gets a lot of his personality: it’s a combination of Newton and Ben’s interactions they have in the lab, which must’ve remained in Johnny 5’s memory.

However, during Covid lockdown Ryan Howard of Nottinghamshire UK built a fully functioning 200 kg robot. He spent £20,000 making it. Apparently it took six years to create.

      As humans we are hard coded to see faces in things, see pareidolia, however when we add human features to things we can really amplify an emotional connection to them and attribute emotional responses to otherwise non-human parts. Though it also runs the risk of causing a negative reaction when we try to make something look too hunan, but it’s off. The uncanny valley in other words; I think that’s also why some people are put off by clowns. They have human features, but the way they behave and sometimes move their faces are not quite right and it triggers a negative reaction.

    Definitely watch the sequel. An 80's movie I would recommend is Cloak & Dagger. It stars Henry Thomas who played Elliot in E.T. and Dabney Coleman. Not a well known movie but one of my favorite from the 80's

    Newton Crosby's co-worker was played by Fisher Stevens. He was also in the 90's TV series "Early Edition" with Kyle Chandler (from Friday Night Lights), but played a co-worker as well.
    Early Edition was a show about a man (Chandler) who got tomorrow's paper...today!
    Nice show, and Fisher Stevens directed many of them!

    Very happy you did this movie. John Badham the director was the cameraman when Stephanie was being interviewed by the news. It took 25 men off screen wearing telemetry suits to move #5's arms and other parts. There were 20 robots and numerous spare parts to film this movie. You recognize Steve Guttenberg and G W Bailey who starred together in Police academy. You will love short circuit 2 as well.

    Robots were very much the thing back in the early ‘80s. Most of the Johnny 5 stuff was more puppetry than actual robotics but he was inspired by things happening in the field at the time. There’s an AWESOME science fiction movie called “The Ice Pirates” that put out a call for any and all robots to populate the futuristic world of the movie and someone clearly had a lot of fun with it. The pimp robot has to be seen to be believed. 😂

    Yes, you need to watch the Classis John Wayne movies. My favorites include: Fort Apache (1948), The man who shot Liberty Valance (1962), In Harm's Way (1965), True Grit (1969), The Undefeated (1969), Rio Lobo (1970), The Shootist (1976). Except for Rio Lobo, all the others are solid, serious movies. Rio Lobo is a slightly comedic and has some poor actors as supporting characters, but overall enjoyable with a great ending.

    You definitely need to watch number 2 “Los locos kick your ass. Los locos kick your face. Los locos kick your balls INTO OUTER SPACE!”. I never really re-watched this after seeing it as a kid, but it still blew my mind when i realised the “Indian” guy, Ben, was in fact played by Fisher Stevens, who most certainly is not Indian.
